From the Historical Society President’s Report

This year, coming to a close today, we can look back and ponder on what

we have achieved, gained or lost. Sadly we have lost two of our long standing and active members, Ern Ferris and Murray Williamson, who were respected and knowledgeable members of our society. We extend our condolence to their families.

Tours keep coming and are a great source of income, as are the families wanting to research their family history, where their ancestor took up land and farmed, and are buried, our records are invaluable.

One of the big events of the year was the RACV Fly the Flag Tour and our society hosting afternoon tea, with help from local people, for approximately 300 people plus their cars. Money raised will go to the restoration of the Mitchell Park gates, opened in 1937, “To the Pioneers”. That was the year the Agricultural Society Showground was closed at the foot of the hill and re-opened at Mitchell Park. The balance of the money will go to the Memorial hall’s outdoor Memorial Wall.

We are pleased to welcome new member Robyn Fidler, already a worthy volunteer, also those who come and assist when asked.

Time marches on, that is why we are called a Historical Society, we record

the history of selectors and citizens as they developed the District to what it is

today. We have been keeping and updating theses records for 50 years and of

course the end of our society’s year makes us all a year older. May we enjoy

good health to continue the good work for those who are to follow.

Arthur Young

The Historical Society is to be commended on the work they do and from all

reports, it is invaluable for those who come seeking their past family history.

The Museum is open on Tuesdays and Sundays from 2—4 pm—why not pay a

visit one day—you’ll be amazed at the wonderful collection of records and

olden day items on display.

If anyone has some time to give, volunteers are most welcome to assist the

regular members of the Historical Society.

Insurance That

Saves Lives Consider this typical / common ‘family’ scenario: Mum, Dad and two children with all the usual living expenses, including paying off a mortgage on the family home. Dad is the major 'breadwinner' but Mum may also work to 'make ends meet' and there is not a lot left over at the end of each week/month. If Dad or Mum can't work through injury, illness or death and the family loses their income, it follows inevitably that the family will lose their home and be unable to fund their 'lifestyle' because expenses will exceed income. Unless they have appropriate personal insurance cover in place. Income protection insurance does just that and enables the family to 'keep going' as usual. On the other hand life, trauma and/or disability (TPD) insurance proceeds can be used by the surviving spouse/parent to pay off the mortgage completely and 'protect' the family home/debts and provide for the future. Death of a partner/parent is bad enough for a family; why make a sad/bad situation worse by losing a lifestyle and a home.

Losing the breadwinner temporarily

or permanently may be unavoidable

but losing home and lifestyle is not. If you can afford to purchase an asset (car, house, etc) you can afford to afford to insure it. It’s a small price for peace of mind.

Seniors News Hello, nice to see some sun. The Shire have removed the eye-sore that was once a garden next to the Seniors

building, which is a big improvement.

Morning Melodies was enjoyed by those who went, then a couple of hours

at the Marketplace. (If you are interested in going to

Morning Melodies and wish to know more about it, please call June Ballis).

Just a reminder about our regular activities each Friday. Good enjoyable

company. Happy Birthday to anyone having one.

Cards—Wanda highest score 1,940,

Peg 1,650, then Jeanette 1,520—lucky score was Kate. Ivor, Kate & Jess played Trevor, Wanda & Jess—one side winning both games. Lovely supper of ginger fluff from Kate—

orange cake from Wanda, Sandwiches and sausage rolls from Jess & Peg. Even if you cant play cards, it would

be worth going just for supper!!

Loddon Mallee Region Cross Country

Nine students represented Pyramid Hill College at the Loddon Mallee Region Cross Country held in St Arnaud last week. These students won the opportunity to represent the school after qualifying at the Northern Central Division cross country. The day produced some very windy cold weather and some very strong competition with students from Bendigo, Echuca, Swan Hill, Mildura and all in between representing their schools. Our students achieved some very good results. Only 2 more Presses

Speaker:

Chaplain Duncan Becsi Royal Australian Navy Senior Chaplain, Establishments

and Training Duncan’s family came from Hungary, his father escaped in 1956 in his late teens during the Soviet invasion and occupation of his homeland. On his way to the United States his ship stopped off in Melbourne where he was offered work in a factory if he stayed and played soccer for Hungaria – a semi professional football club. His mother immigrated to Australia when she was a young girl. They met (his mother was just 16 and his father couldn’t speak English) and much to the displeasure of his mother’s parents, they fell in love and soon after got married. Duncan grew up in WA, joined the navy at 17 and after 8 years, left to study Theology and become a Minister. He served as a Minister for six years when he was approached by the Defence to consider Reserve work as a Navy Chaplain. This led to full time service in 2004. Duncan has served on many vessels and has been deployed twice to the Middle East.

It was a nice day for netball and the two

Some good passing saw some excellent

girls. Well done.

Burke Family Award - Erin Farrar

The Pyramid girls started with a positive

C Grade:

A tough game for Pyramid but we pushed

through with strong defence getting lots of

rebounds and working it very well down the

court to the shooters. Second quarter was a

very strong one from everyone on the court

pushing themselves and getting lots of

intercepts.

Final score: Newbridge 41 - Pyramid Hill 17

Award: Monique O'Brien

B Grade:

We were feeling a bit short and lost without

Lauren and Hannah this week. Big thanks to

Zoe, Morgan and Abbey for filling in. Bad

news ... we lost! Good news...Zoe Kennedy

is now 18! Drinks all round.

Final Score: Pyr Hill 30 - Newbridge 49

Award: Georgina Amos

A Grade:

The girls came out firing against Newbridge

playing beautifully as a team to be up by 15

at half time. Changes were made at half time

and we continued to extend our lead with

beautiful goaling by Jess and Morgan. Kirby

and Stacey, Abbey and Gem demonstrated

great defence and made several intercepts

allowing Gabby and Zoe to get the ball into

the goalers. A great game saw the Pyramid

girls run out 16 goal winners. Well done

girls.

Report Pyramid Hill vs Newbridge

Under 18s The boys started the game full of running and held a comfortable 4 goal margin a quarter time. A lapse in concentration in the 2nd term allowed Newbridge back into the contest and the match was evenly poised. After a spray from Chicken the boys responded well and dominated the 2nd half and ran out 8 goal winners. Jimmy dominated all day and was best on while Stevie continued his great season and Kervo ran all game. Other players in the best included Webby, Blake and Ant. Pyramid Hill 14.8 (92) def Newbridge 6.5 (41) Goal Kickers were S Gunther 4, B Pickersgill 3, J Ryan 3, Z Dingwall 1, H Miller 1 and L Hogan 1. Reserves Once again the boys were under pressure from the get go with the annual Bali trip underway. The boys stood up to the challenge and came out firing early putting great pressure on the scoreboard with Ryno proving to be a handful across half forward. In the end though the boys were overrun, however they never stopped trying playing an impressive game to go down by 45 points. The boys are sure to be in with a great chance next time around with the return of the boys in Bali. Seniors On a perfect day for footy the Newbridge side soon showed that they were not going to lay down. Despite leading for most of the day we seemed content to coast along and did not have the desire to put them away. Fabian again was amongst the goals with 6 of the best, Danko was solid all day as was Brydo who was involved in everything. Late in the last quarter we suddenly found ourselves 14 points down but great play by Jake and Liam both kicked great goals late in the last allowed us to grab the lead back just in time to have a very good win in an exciting final term. Singa and MC played great late and it was good to see the whole team stand up deep in the quarter to sneak across the line by 3 points.
