So, the first half of your first term at school is over. How’s it going? We hope that you’re enjoying school and that you’re all settling in nicely. We have a fantastic issue here for you this autumn. That’s right, it’s now autumn. Summer is over and winter is on its way. But it’s not all doom and gloom! We have loads to look forward to in the coming months! At the end of October we have Halloween … ooooooohhhh … Then, on November 5 it’s Bonfire Night! We love Bonfire Night at Primary Times with the sparkly fireworks and lovely warming food. Do remember to keep safe though. After Bonfire Night, it won’t be long till Christmas! We have a few sneak peeks of what’s happening around Derbyshire around Christmastime.

As well as all of that, we have some great competitions for you to enter and a lovely feature on Denise van Outen about becoming a new mum and how smart phones can give you back some valuable ‘me time’. We also have all the usual Roundabout and Theatre listings telling you what’s on and when during October Half Term and beyond.

Have a great week off, and we’ll see you at Christmas!

Jennifer and the Primary Times Team

Welcome…

OCTOBER HALF TERM 2011 ISSUE4

The concept of choosing, understanding and taking full advantage of a smart phone can be a daunting task for many people. With the help of Denise van Outen and Three, the prospect is less overwhelming.

After giving birth to her fi rst child, Betsy at the age of 35 in May 2010, Denise van Outen set about learning about the advantages of owning a smart phone. She had been told about the technology’s uses by her many friends and

decided to invest in one herself.

Partnering up with Three, the fastest growing mobile network in the country, Denise has been traveling up and down the country, spreading the news and uses of a smart phone to mums everywhere.

“Being a new mum, it felt like a really good collaboration. Three have come up with the All You Can Eat data, which is great, encouraging new mums to use smart phones to see how much time they can save. I was

struggling a lot during the early days, trying to juggle being a busy, working mum, running the house and getting back to work. I learnt of the benefi ts of smart phones for myself, with the amazing time saving opportunities and convenience of the smart phone.”

Three have published fi gures that say 82 per cent of mums now have less than one hour of ‘me time’ every day. By using a smart phone, mums can win back up to 135 hours a year. By using the capabilities of a smart phone, you can check your emails, do the food shopping, keep in touch with your friends via social media and even buy yourself a few treats too.

“I love fashion. It’s something I do online all the time. I’m always browsing fashion websites like ASOS to check out the latest trends. I buy most of Betsy’s essentials and baby clothes online too. The only problem is trying to hide all the boxes from my

husband! He comes home and says, “Have you been shopping again?” I have to try to arrange deliveries when he’s not home! All mums must remember to take time to treat themselves. Just because you’re a mum doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be allowed the occasional treat.“

Celebrities are always asked how they get back in to such great shape after having a baby. Denise says, “It’s much harder if you don’t start until after you’ve had the baby. While you’re pregnant, listen to what your body wants and try to fi nd a healthy alternative. It’s all about everything in moderation. When I was pregnant, I was craving carbs. It would have been very easy to just sit and eat lots of chips, but instead I went for whole-wheat pasta. In the early stages, I was craving cheddar cheese, which was obviously going to pile on the pounds. I spoke to my nutritionist who recommended

drinking more milk and taking a calcium supplement. There are alternatives to the foods that you are craving. The whole thing about eating for two is a complete myth. I think people just use that as an excuse!”

A lot of women struggle with the issue of when to get back to work after having a baby. Denise became the centre of a rather public debate when she went back to work. She felt the criticism was very unfair: “I received quite a lot of criticism when I went back to work. I have a lot of friends who had to go back to work as a necessity. I respect women who choose to stay at home and be stay-at-home mums, but I’ve always worked and I love working. I’m really lucky that the job that I do allows me to work and still see Betsy loads. When I fi rst went back to work, I went in to Legally Blonde in the West End. I was with Betsy all day and I was working at night after she was asleep. At the time of the criticism, I was on a trek in Peru to raise money

for Breast Cancer Care. I was with other women who were going through treatment for breast cancer and had young children. I felt like, if I was being criticised, so were they, and that was not fair.”

As far as a multi-tasking mum, Denise van Outen is about as close as you can get. “I’ve just fi nished doing a fi lm called Run For Your Wife. It’s a British comedy, out next year. I’ve also just started doing my narration for The Only Way Is Essex.” How does she manage to fi t in all that work and be a wife and mum? “Having a smart phone certainly helps! The technology is amazing for saving your valuable time. When I’m on the train, going to work, I can be checking my emails, doing the food shopping, booking our family holiday. I can do all the things that I used to have to do at home on a computer while I’m sat on a train. It’s great!”

Denise is currently working on her second book, Mumalicious

By combining an extensive curriculum, innovative timetabling and close relationships with other providers, and with strong, improving teaching and support expertise of our own, Heritage High School is able to provide a challenging learning experience that is very unique.

We have successfully introduced strategies that have resulted in accelerating the achievements of the hard-working, the able and the well-motivated. Our pedigree of fast-tracking students making better than average progress is both innovative and successful. In recent years we have had more and more students who choose to go, and succeed in going to University, including Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

This year’s record breaking GCSE results of 68% of Heritage High School students achieving 5 good GCSE passes represents a 100% increase in the amount of learners that achieved the pass rate over a period of 4 years. It is notable that these passes are all in subjects that will enable progression towards further study in appropriate courses in other local or national institutions, as the courses we offer are universally recognised. Our targeted

student tracking, mentoring and intervention programmes are now embedded in our practice. They are designed to address any potential underachievement.

seems to follow her. She’s very clumsy, but we love her. Penny Dreadful is a Magnet for Disaster follows on from

The Rat, Show and Tell and The CATastrophe in the lovely series of books about the clumsy little girl. Be prepared

for hilarious tales of the mishap, mayhem and misadventure that comes hand-in-hand with Penny Disaster.

Super Soccer Boy, Harry Gribble doesn’t want to go on the school trip to the museum which will make him miss football practice. While the rest of the school is at the museum, there is a robbery and a priceless funeral mask is stolen. Who could have taken it? It’s too big and heavy for any of the children to have taken it. Harry puts his football skills to good use as he tries to fi nd the culprit. The Laser Ray Robbery is the sixth in a series of Super Soccer Boy books which follow the adventures of Harry Gribble. This book is hilarious for boys, girls, mums and dads.

The third in this series about the little witchling, Bella Donna. On her birthday, Bella receives her very own

grimoire – a handwritten diary and book of spells. After reading her grimoire, she fi nds that it contains a

spooky secret. What will it be? This lovely book is a real treat for all the family. The eye-catching black and

white illustrations help to draw readers in while the easy to read language makes it a pleasure to read.

Alien schoolboy, Flowkwee is back in a brand new adventure. As always, it falls to Flowkwee to save

the miserable Earthlings from the terrifying Wiffl y Biffl ies (don’t let the name fool you … they are

dangerous). This book has been called one of the funniest books of the year. We agree. Letters from an

Alien Schoolboy is very funny and will have you laughing out loud. Parents will love this one too.

Mary is a ten-year-old girl who was born in India, to British parents. She is sent to England to live with her

uncle Archibald. When she fi rst arrives in England, she is rude unaffectionate and angry. When she meets the

people in the Secret Garden, she begins to change. An enchanting tale that has been reprinted to bring joy to

a new generation.

Neverland is home to Peter Pan, the boy who has never grown up. When he visits London, Peter meets Wendy Darling. Peter fl ies Wendy back to Neverland to meet and become the mother to his gang of Lost Boys. Wendy’s brothers, John and Michael also travel to Neverland and there they have an amazing adventure. This timeless classic has been restored to its full glory with the help of the Barnes & Noble leatherbound classics series.
