November and December 2012

Unlike many similar museums and attractions which close during the winter months, Beamish, the award-winning County Durham museum, is open all year and it’s a great place to banish those winter blues and enjoy a family day out in the crisp, fresh air.

Every weekend from November through to March, you can take a step back in time and stroll through the Edwardian Town and Pit Village, experience Victorian rural life at Home Farm and explore Georgian times at Pockerley Old Hall. What’s more, your ticket is valid for a whole year, so you can visit as often as you like for the next twelve months.

And right through until February half term, visitors with energy to spare can pop on some skates and take a turn on the outdoor real ice rink in The Pit Village (small extra charge applies). It’s a fun way to burn off Christmas over-indulgence and put some colour in the cheeks!

Each Saturday and Sunday right up until the big day itself, you can enjoy a fun-packed, family Christmas outing too. Each weekend (and Christmas Eve) experience Christmas as it was in Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian times. Meet Father Christmas in his magical fi reside Grotto, taste delicious festive food, see beautiful decorations and pick up a perfect present from the Edwardian market stalls.

Beamish is easy to get to, it’s just 12 miles north of Durham city and only 4 miles from A1(M) J63. Until 21st March, the Museum is open from 10am to 4pm, closed Mondays, Fridays and Christmas Day. Admission charges at weekends are £17.50 for adults, £13 for seniors and £10 for children (under 5s free) – tickets are valid for a whole year for an unlimited number of visits. Half price winter day tickets are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays when a visit is centred on The Town, Pit Village and Tramway.

A GREAT WINTER DAY OUT!

12 Primary Times CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR ISSUE

Saturday 1: String up the advent calendar. The anticipation begins with the opening of that rst window – who knows what it will display? Sunday 2: Assist at the school PTA Christmas fair. Volunteering your services at the school fair is a wonderful way to meet other parents and raise money for your child’s school at the same time. Plus of course most children love it when they see mum or dad helping out at their school. Monday 3: The serious shopping season will have kicked in by now and if not - it really is time to get started! It is expected that the retailers will continue to tempt shoppers with hard to ignore promotions, but watch out for those misleading o ers. For tips go to www.moneysavingexpert.comTuesday 4: The traditional Christmas card may be losing its appeal as many families now favour e-cards. If you are sending cards, early December is a good time to pen those few lines and reach the post box with plenty of time to spare. Wednesday 5: This is the posting day for Christmas airmail delivery to Asia, Australia and New Zealand. You’ve got until Friday 7 for delivery to South & Central America, Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East, and until Monday 10 to Eastern Europe, USA and Canada. Thursday 6: Go late night shopping. Relish the sights, lights and smells amongst the hustle and bustle of late night shopping. Leave the lengthy Christmas wish lists at home to soak up the festive

Countdown to ChristmasWhen those advent calendars are strung up for all to admire you know there are just 24 days to go until the big day! With multiple events, extended shopping trips and mammoth card writing sessions in store, it’s a little overwhelming to nd the time to squeeze it all in! We’ve added some ideas here to ll the Christmas advent calendar – feel free to jumble the dates up to t your hectic December diaries?

atmosphere and really enjoy the moment.Friday 7: If you can’t contend with the frenzied supermarket aisles it may be helpful to purchase your food online. This is a good time to secure a supermarket delivery slot near to Christmas Day. Saturday 8: Drop by at a Christmas market. Find an eclectic display of continental wares and savour traditional Christmas cuisine such as hot roasted chestnuts at these superbly festive markets that lure in voluminous crowds.Sunday 9: Visit Santa! This is an absolute must and will be at the top of any child’s to do list in December as it’s their special moment to whisper all those Christmas wishes to Father Christmas. Monday 10: To guarantee Christmas delivery many web-based companies have nal purchase dates in early December so check your favourite stores for stock quantity and delivery dates. Demand will be high – collectively the UK internet population will spend around 350 million hours shopping online in DecemberTuesday 11: Still puzzling what to give that a uent aunty who has everything? Well, how about encouraging the children to make a unique creative gift by painting a picture or ceramic piece, or engraving an item of jewellery. For ideas go to www.yellowmoon.org.ukWednesday 12: This is the last posting day using airmail to Western Europe. Also, this is good time to post those parcels to friends and relatives you won’t see during the holidays.

Thursday 13: Buy the Christmas tree. A cut Christmas tree should last around four weeks, so it’s best not to buy it too early. Test the needles for dryness by gently shaking the tree. If the outer needles fall o , swap the tree for another one. Let the children choose the tree, be it real or arti cial, then enjoy the novelty and fun as you ght to put it up. Find out more at www.christmastree.org.ukFriday 14: Stock up on all those essential frozen items before the masses. This is also one of the last dates to order the Christmas Turkey in time for the 25th so put in your requests now! Saturday 15: Let the children help with the decorations – they’re great at making decorations such as paper chains and will gladly drape sparkly tinsel on the tree and add their individual creative air to the placement of Christmas cards! Sunday 16: Avoid those awkward empty-handed moments when you had forgotten to buy someone a gift. Stock up on small presents for teachers, your child’s best friend and so on and get a small supply of gifts ‘In Case of an Emergency’ when someone arrives unexpectedly with a present for you.Monday 17: Go to the school nativity or carol service. This must-go event is always a priority in the build up to Christmas and one that truly puts everyone in the Christmas spirit. Tuesday 18: Are the Christmas cards still lying unsent on the sideboard? Well, this is the last posting day for Christmas delivery using Second Class post.Wednesday 19: Clearout old toys and clothes at home to make room for the new toys expected at Christmas. Many charity shops will warmly welcome donations at this time of year. To choose a charity visit www.charitychoice.co.uk

Thursday 20: Are those Christmas card still on the sideboard? If so, this is your last chance to post them - this is the last day for Christmas delivery using First Class post.Friday 21: Last day of school. Schools out for Christmas! Yippee!Saturday 22: Wrap Up! In case you haven’t started this is a good point to start wrapping the gifts - come Christmas Eve - you’ll be pleased you did! Sunday 23: Remember to collect the turkey and the other essential groceries. Create a checklist of things to do and double check that you have everything you need for the big day. Christmas Eve: The decorations are up, the Christmas stockings are neatly resting on the edge of the bed – now it’s time for Father Christmas to work his magic. Sleep tight!

Special hearing dogs change the lives of deaf childrenHearing Dogs for Deaf People is a UK charity with training centres in Buckinghamshire and Yorkshire. The Charity trains specially bred puppies to become ‘hearing dogs’. These amazing dogs alert deaf children and adults to important household sounds and danger signals such as the alarm clock, doorbell, telephone and smoke alarm. They provide independence, confi dence and valuable companionship to the deaf people they work with.

With around 45,000 deaf children in the UK, hearing dogs could improve many more young lives – as well as those of deaf adults. But the charity urgently needs to breed and train more puppies. By sponsoring a puppy and taking part in the exclusive Primary Times Hearing Dog Competition you could help make sure more Hearing Dogs become available for the deaf people than need them. www.hearingdogs.org.uk
