Charlie Brooks launches‘great mums get together’ for Clic Sargent.

Recently crowned ‘Queen of TheJungle’ and Eastenders Actress,Charlie Brooks recently launched CLICSargent’s new national fundraisingcampaign for mums, the ‘Great MumsGet Together’. Charlie is calling ongreat British mums across the UK tohave a cuppa with friends, bake somecakes and simply have fun whilstspending time with their own children, family and friends to raise money forCLIC Sargent, the UK’s leading cancercharity for children and young people.

This year’s event starts on Mother’sDay and runs from Sunday 10th Marchto Sunday 17th March, 2013.

Charlie said “Like most mums, I lovegetting together with friends andhaving a laugh so this event is a great

way to harness that whilst raisingmoney. I can’t imagine what somemums must go through when a child isdiagnosed with cancer, so the fact thatthis campaign will support them isfantastic.”

The campaign encourages mums tohold any type of event from cake salesand coffee mornings to dinner partiesor pamper nights and have a great timeknowing that all themoney raised fromtheir event will makea real difference tofamilies affected bychildhood cancer.

The Road Safety team at DurhamCounty Council are embarking onthe second year of running theBikeability National Cycle TrainingScheme. Bikeability is ‘CyclingProficiency’ for the 21st Century, designed to give futuregenerations the skills andconfidence to cycle in modernroad conditions.

For over 60 years children havewobbled their way to their cyclingproficiency certificate. The firsttest was held in 1947 as part of apilot programme followed by theintroduction of the NationalCycling Proficiency Scheme in1958. Even the Prince of Walestook part in this rite of passage

earning his enamel badge atCheam School in 1960.

Over the years, the scheme hasseen several changes of formatculminating in the introduction ofBikeability, the National Standardin 2007. Bikeability comprisesthree levels. Level 1 is learningbasic cycle control in anenvironment away from traffic, usually on the school playground.Level 2 is covered on quiet roadsbut with real traffic conditions. This involves 3 sessions of ‘onroad’ training giving pupils’ reallike cycling experience andhelping them to deal with traffic.

Level 3 can be delivered in

Secondary Schools andcovers busy roadsincorporating advancedriding along a specificroute.

The Road Safety teammanages the schemeand the highly skilledteam of instructors trainedapproximately 2,500 pupils lastyear. The intention is to train over4,000 pupils during theforthcoming academic year, with

the ultimate aim that no childshould leave primary schoolwithout the opportunity to takepart in Bikeability training.

This is Bonnie, the Queen Bee from the beehives in TheAlnwick Garden! During this snowy weather, we bees areinside the beehives waiting for better weather and doing ourbest to keep warm. I hope you are doing the same!

If the weather improves you may be able to look for us inany of the early-flowering plants of your garden. Particularlywe love crocus, hellebore and mahonia plants – they reallyare very pretty and lovely for you to grow in the garden.

When the weather gets warmer there are still things youcan do to prepare for the new season – why not plant somesmall bee-friendly trees for your garden? Many fruit treesgive beautiful blossom in the spring and also have juicy fruitwhich can be picked straight from the branches. Goodchoices are apples, pears, plums and cherries. Of course, thegreat joy of planting a tree is that you can grow up with it –many can live for years and look beautiful every season!

A tree can be planted once the frost has gone from theground. Look for a fruit tree with a ‘dwarf root ball’ to keepit small for a small garden. Dig a hole around two times thesize of the root, plant the root in the hole and cover theroot firmly back up – it’s a good idea to ask an adult to helpyou.

If you love fruit, why not also plant some fruit bushes likegooseberry, blackcurrant or redcurrant? And of course, wewill love the flowers!

Take care my friends, I look forward to talking to you whenit’s warm again!
