CHRISTMAS 2011 ISSUE

WIN! A TRIP TO FLORIDA AND MUCH MUCH MORE!

Have you ever thought about adopting a child?

Jaydenaged 4 ½ (pictured above) is a happy, sociable little boy who his foster carer describes as a joy to care for.

He likes to receive hugs and cuddles.

He loves to be tickled and spoken to and he loves to laugh and giggle.

He attends pre- school nursery five mornings a week, he also attends a private nursery two afternoons a week. He has settled into nursery well. The nursery has described him as a happy, bright, sociable little boy.

Jayden needs to be adopted into a family who are willing to provide him with a loving and stable environment where he will be accepted as a family member.

Wolverhampton Adoption Team:01902 553070

Jessica and Ellieare close sisters, in spite of their occasional squabbles. Jessica is aged 4 and goes pre-school five mornings a week which she enjoys, Ellie is 2 ½ and likes imaginative play with her dolls.

Jessica is a slim child with fair hair & skin and hazel coloured eyes and Ellie has brown hair, fair skin and bight blue eyes. Both children are robust and in good heath. Jessica does wear glasses to help with her long-sightedness

Jessica is a lively, friendly little girl with an out going nature and enquiring mind. Ellie likes to both play on her own and with others.

The sisters need an adoptive family where they are the only children. Jessica and Ellie are very different little people and adoptive parents will need to develop the each unique talents and personalities.

Dudley Adoption Service: 01384 815891

For more information about adopting these children please call the individual numbers given at the end of each child story.

For general information about adoption log on to adoptionblackcountry.co.uk or call 0800 073 0597

Aliyah and Skye are two beautiful little girls who need an adoptive family where they can be placed together. Aliyah is aged 4 and Skye is aged 3. They are half siblings and have always lived together. Both are healthy and have good appetites.

Aliyah & Skye are both meeting all their developmental milestones and are thriving in their current foster placement.

Ideally a two parent family where one is White and the other is Black Caribbean or of dual heritage. Other families with connections with the Black community will be considered. If you think you can offer a home to these girls.

Dudley Adoption Service: 01384 815891

Conner and Libby (pictured above) are twin brother and sister who have lived in the same foster family together since they were 5 months old.Conner is a happy little boy who is always smiling. He enjoys a variety of children’s TV programmes, musical toys and walking. Conner currently uses no language but communicates in other ways and this is thought to be due to autistic spectrum disorder.

Libby is a sociable little girl who laughs a lot. She enjoys shopping and holding her foster career’s hands. Libby is very independent and although she currently has significant speech delay, she has made a lot of progress. She is attempting to make appropriate sounds and can say a few words.

They have had traumatic early experiences and appear to have some resulting learning difficulties.

They are both being seen by a clinical psychologist and a speech and language therapist. Conner and Libby are being taught Makaton so that they can communicate with their foster carer.

CHRISTMAS 2011 ISSUE 8

Primary Times remembers

Harry Moseley Harry Moseley was an incredibly brave boy who was

diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour in 2007 at the

age of just 7. Doctors could not remove Harry’s tumour

due to its position in the brain.

Sadly, Harry’s health deteriorated in July 2011. He had an

emergency operation in August, which resulted in him remaining

in a coma for eight weeks. Doctors advised Harry’s family to take

him home to rest. Harry passed away peacefully in his mother’s

arms on Saturday October 8. He will be sadly missed.

Harry went through a lot with his illness, but he never let it get him

down. He had chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment to try

to shrink the size of the tumour. It was during the radiotherapy

that Harry met someone who had a great impact on his life.

Robert Harley and Harry started their radiotherapy on the same

day and became great friends. When Robert’s health took a turn

for the worse, Harry decided to do something about it.

Harry started to make and sell beaded bracelets with all the

money going to brain tumour research. The bracelets became

so popular that Harry set up a campaign that he named Help

Harry Help Others. Sadly, four weeks into the campaign, Robert

passed away aged just 55. Harry became committed to

dedicating his life to helping others.

With the support of his loving family, Harry worked tirelessly on the campaign by making and selling bracelets, attending fundraising events, speaking at schools and businesses as well as keeping loyal to his ever growing ‘Twitfam’ on Twitter. @Harry_Moseley currently has over 100,000 followers, among which are many celebrities including Rio Ferdinand, Duncan Bannatyne and Ben Shephard.

Harry sold over 30,000 bracelets and single-handedly raised over £170,000 for brain tumour research as well as helping Cancer Research UK raise hundreds of thousands of pounds more by appearing and speaking at events.

It is Harry’s wish that the whole of the UK wear one of his bracelets with pride so that his legacy will live on through his campaign.

To read more about Harry’s inspirational story and to find out how to purchase a bracelet, visit www.helpharryhelpothers.com

Little Star AwardsThe courage of children with cancer in the West Midlands is being recognised

with a unique award. The Little Star Awards from Cancer Research UK,

in partnership with TK Maxx are inviting people across the region to

nominate young cancer patients or survivors for special recognition of

their courage and bravery.

Last year, 24 children from across the West Midlands received a Little

Star Award. Recipients get a trophy, a certificate signed by a host of

celebrities and the first 300 nominees will receive a £50 TK Maxx

voucher … so, don’t delay, nominate your Little Star today.

Cancer Research UK has helped to transform the lives of children

with cancer for the last 40 years, and they continue to work hard.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters and donators of Cancer

Research UK, the survival rate of childhood cancers has dramatically

increased over the years. The Little Star Awards go a long way to

recognising the battles that children with cancer suffer every day. You can

help by nominating your own Little Star.

Santa’s Sleigh is a lovely book for Christmas, telling the story of a busy night in the North Pole. As the elves help Santa pack his sleigh ready to deliver presents to the children of the world, the sleigh seems less and less likely to be able to hold the weight of the presents. How many reindeer will be needed to lift the sleigh so that all of the children can receive their Christmas presents? Turn the wheel and count the reindeer as they join the sleigh. This book is captivating, a joy to read and great for helping with counting skills.

Set in the ragged landscape of Viking

Iceland, the Grim Gruesome series follows

the adventures of the villainous title

character. Complete with turf houses, snow-

capped volcanoes, black lava desert and

frightening boiling mud pools, The Rings of

Doom is fast-paced, gripping and engaging

for all ages. As with all great children’s

books, it is also laugh-out-loud funny.

The Toymaker’s Workshop book features three-

dimensional paper toys that pop out, fold up and

glue together to make the toys that Santa and

his elves will be making this Christmas. You can

construct a science-fi ction fl ying car, a Punch

and Judy style theatre complete with fi nger

puppets, a magical unicorn forest and a pirate

ship for racing to a gold-fi lled treasure chest.

This book is perfect for keeping children (and

adults!) entertained this Christmas.

Based on a true story written down by Benjamin Mee about how he and his family spent their life savings to buy a zoo. This heartwarming family movie starring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Elle Fanning is sure to lift your spirits in time for Christmas. Benjamin Mee bought a dilapidated zoo in the hopes of making a fresh start with his children. The plan: reopen the zoo. The messages from this movie: do something crazy; embrace your wild side.

The sequel to Sherlock Holmes which was released in 2009, A Game of Shadows is another action-packed episode in the title character’s life. Based on the much-loved stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his sidekick Dr John Watson (Jude Law) take on Sherlock’s rival and criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) with the help of Sherlock’s older brother Mycroft (Stephen Fry). This is a fantastic movie that will be loved by all the family.

Alvin, Simon and Theodore are back for another great fi lm. There was Alvin and the Chipmunks in 2007, followed by The Squeakquel in 2009, and now the Chipmunks are Chipwrecked. The Chipmunks and the Chipettes go on a cruise trip with Dave Seville (their owner and father fi gure). While on the cruise, the Chipmunks turn the ship into their very own personal playground. What chaos will they cause this time?

HOW TO MAKE THE CARD

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

. On a fl at surface, fold the green card in half width ways. . Follow our template and cut out the shapes to make Santa’s hat and cuff, face, cheeks and beard. . Lay out your pieces of paper in front of you on a fl at surface. Use the glue stick to stick Santa on to the front of the card. Make sure that the opening to the card is on your right. First, put glue on the back of the hat, then stick it down near the top of the card, being sure to leave room to write at the top after. Next, put glue on the back of the face and place it under the hat, leaving a little gap for the hat brim. Then, put glue on the back of the hat brim and place that between the bottom of the hat and the top of the face. Next, put glue on the back of the cheeks and stick down

onto Santa’s face. Then, glue Santa’s beard down underneath his face. . For this step you will be using scissors – ask for help from an adult if you are not confi dent using scissors. Get the pom pom or bell and glue the fl at side to the point of Santa’s hat. . Use a black pen to draw dots for Santa’s eyes. . Use the white/silver pen to write your message on your card. We went for ‘Merry Christmas’ across the top of the card and ‘Ho! Ho! Ho!’ at the bottom. Enjoy making this card for your family and friends. All of the items that you need are available in all good craft and stationery shops.
