Merry Christmas from all the Cycle Derby team!Father Christmas has helped us put together some helpful tips to make sure your child’s bike

is not just for Christmas but can be enjoyed all year round.Shopping for the perfect bike can be a nightmare, but by following this simple guide on what

to look for and what to avoid we hope that you’ll be able to find your dream bike.

There is so much we can help with, from teaching your child to ride, providing clubs, maintenance & even 1:1 adult training.

Have a wonderful Christmas & happy riding.

1) Flat Pack Hell!

Unless you are sure about what you’re doing,

avoid it! Get some quality advice at your local

bike shop. We’ve seen some really dangerous

bikes as a result of parents’ attempts to build

flat-pack bikes; with forks on back-to-front,

brakes dangerously adjusted and children left

wondering why cycling is such hard work!

Instead, ask about the free after sales service

that most quality cycle shops offer.

2) Sizing up Kids can struggle with large, heavy or ill-fitting machines unless you get them fitted to your child. Beware of heavy, ineffective sus-pensions, out of reach brakes and dozens of baffling gears. Instead look for, easy-reach brakes for small hands and simple gears.

3) EssentialsA lock, lights, and reflective clothing are not optional extras! Buy them for your child as part of their gift. If you are buying a helmet, make sure it is fitted & you know how to adjust it.

5) Be Bright, Be SeenReflective and fluorescent high-viz gear is essential. Also, fun items like Spokey Dokeys or flashing dust caps are great for getting your kids noticed. There are some great things in the shops or alternatively try Bright Kidz at www.brightkidz.co.uk

6) Gift Your TimeMake sure that as part of their gift you give your time to

teach your child how to use their bike. Balance, gears and

confident cycling all need lots of practise. The best way to

encourage is to get out as a family on a few crisp winter

days and have some fun. Take a breather here and there

stopping off for a hot chocolate or two on the way, lovely!.7) Tool Time

You can get your bike serviced or fixed at

any bike shop, but when you’re out and

about take a puncture repair kit, spare

inner tube, pump, spanner and Allen keys.

You can purchase lightweight multi-tools

and bags that sit out the way underneath

your seat so you’re always prepared.

10) A Home for Your Bike?

Think about where you’re going to store your child’s new bike;

obviously somewhere safe, but also somewhere with easy-access.

That will make sure they can cycle as often as they want to.

9) Get SociableRegister as a Cycle Derby member and we’ll keep you up-to-date with family cycling events, rides and races. You’ll also be able to get great discounts at many of Derby’s cycle shops.

4) All Weather CyclingSinging in the rain! Your child will be if you get a waterproof jacket with a hood. A brim on the helmet will also help to

keep the rain out of their eyes. Look no hands! For winter cycling; warm and ideally water-resistant gloves are essential.

8) Discover Your RoutePlan ahead. Visit Cycle Derby & get a

cycle map and copies of leisure route

guides to plan your trips- whether

to school, work, or for weekend

family rides.

For everything cycle related give the Cycle Derby Team a

call or email.

The Giant Book of

Giants (4+)

Set in the ragged landscape of Viking

Iceland, the Grim Gruesome series follows

the adventures of the villainous title

character. Complete with turf houses, snow-

capped volcanoes, black lava desert and

frightening boiling mud pools, The Rings of

Doom is fast-paced, gripping and engaging

for all ages. As with all great children’s

books, it is also laugh-out-loud funny.

The Toymaker’s Workshop book features three-

dimensional paper toys that pop out, fold up and

glue together to make the toys that Santa and

his elves will be making this Christmas. You can

construct a science-fi ction fl ying car, a Punch

and Judy style theatre complete with fi nger

puppets, a magical unicorn forest and a pirate

ship for racing to a gold-fi lled treasure chest.

This book is perfect for keeping children (and

adults!) entertained this Christmas.

This is an enchanting book to read to the little ones on Christmas Eve, before they go to sleep and wait for the real Santa to arrive.

Santa’s Sleigh is a lovely book for Christmas, telling the story of a busy night in the North Pole. As the elves help Santa pack his sleigh ready to deliver presents to the children of the world, the sleigh seems less and less likely to be able to hold the weight of the presents. How many reindeer will be needed to lift the sleigh so that all of the children can receive their Christmas presents? Turn the wheel and count the reindeer as they join the sleigh. This book is captivating, a joy to read and great for helping with counting skills.

need foster carersHave you thought about becoming a foster carer and then decided against it?

Maybe you thought that you didn’t have the time, experience or confidence to apply to look after children and young people who need a home. Well, you have something in common with all of Derby City Council’s 190 foster carers. It can take a number of months or years from the time when people first start thinking about fostering to the moment they first contact the Fostering Team. Derby City Council currently looks after around 470 children, the majority live with foster carers, although around 40 youngsters live in five children’s homes. Foster carers can come from all backgrounds. They can be: • Single, married, living together as a couple, separated, widowed • A parent or without children • Employed, retired or on benefits

• From any adult age group • A homeowner or a tenant

• Living in or outside of DerbyFoster carers receive full training and support, as well as a weekly financial payment ranging from £130 to £469 to look after a child. Carers can choose the age and gender of the child or children they want to foster and can look after children at weekends, for short breaks or for a longer period of time. You need a spare room unless you wish to look after a baby. It can take around six months to become a foster carer. It is important that everyone in your household is committed to fostering, including your children if you have them. You do not need any childcare qualifications or experience to be a foster

carer and you do not have to take any exams. All the information is presented in a clear and easy to understand style and you get excellent support from your social worker.

Based on a true story written down by Benjamin Mee about how he and his family spent their life savings to buy a zoo. This heartwarming family movie starring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Elle Fanning is sure to lift your spirits in time for Christmas. Benjamin Mee bought a dilapidated zoo in the hopes of making a fresh start with his children. The plan: reopen the zoo. The messages from this movie: do something crazy; embrace your wild side.

The sequel to Sherlock Holmes which was released in 2009, A Game of Shadows is another action-packed episode in the title character’s life. Based on the much-loved stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his sidekick Dr John Watson (Jude Law) take on Sherlock’s rival and criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) with the help of Sherlock’s older brother Mycroft (Stephen Fry). This is a fantastic movie that will be loved by all the family.

Alvin, Simon and Theodore are back for another great fi lm. There was Alvin and the Chipmunks in 2007, followed by The Squeakquel in 2009, and now the Chipmunks are Chipwrecked. The Chipmunks and the Chipettes go on a cruise trip with Dave Seville (their owner and father fi gure). While on the cruise, the Chipmunks turn the ship into their very own personal playground.
