On his part, Mr Tjaart van der Walt, speaking onbehalf of Cranbrook Property Projects, told theaudience the plan is is to make the town moreattractive to the employees and executives of thescores of platinum and chrome mines in the vicinity, many of whom currently choose rather to live inLydenburg, 60km away, or in the neighbouring townsof Steelpoort and Orighstad.

Mr Van der Walt said part of this plan, he says, isthe creation of beautiful new residential areas suchas the Spekboom River Estate, which will ultimatelycontain more than 1800 of the 7500 new homes it isestimated that the town will need in the short tomedium-term.

He said although the whole 520ha Spekboomsite will be secured, a large percentage of it will beleft undeveloped or in greenbelts which will enableresidents to enjoy the tranquility of the bushveldsurroundings.

Meanwhile the terrain will soon also be home to anew Curro school, one of a growing string ofcampuses across the country that offers affordableprivate schooling from pre-primary right up to Grade12.

The school is to be built on a 10ha site set asideby Cranbrook Property Projects adjacent to itsSpekboom River Estate residential development justto the east of the old town centre and close to the newTubatse Mall shopping centre.

Construction of the first phase of the newBurgersfort campus will start within the next fewweeks and the school will open its doors to the firstpre-primary learners in January 2012, with otherclasses set to commence in January 2013.

Mr Malcolm Law, representing Curro Schools, toldthe audience the vision of the Curro group is toprovide affordable private education to learnersacross South Africa. This will be the group’s secondLimpopo campus - with the other being in Polokwane– and its 12th school countrywide.

Curro offers parallel medium education from Gr Rto Gr 9 and dual medium from Gr 10 to 12 and it aimsto fill the gap between public schools and expensiveprivate education (around R5000 a month) whichmost parents cannot afford. At the moment Curroschool fees average around R2000 a month, depending on the Grade.

The Tubatse Mall development officially broke ground on Friday, 22July 2011.

The 32000 square metre retail shopping mall, situated in thevalley of the Spekboom River in the Greater Tubatse LocalMunicipality, will be developed by Abacus Asset Management.

Abacus was also responsible for the highly successful MooiriverMall (mall of the year 2010) in Potchefstroom.

The architectural design will be provided by Stauch Forster inJohannesburg and Murray and Roberts Construction will beresponsible for constructing the greatly anticipated retail shoppingcentre.

The planned opening date for the shopping centre is in April2013.

According to AAM Chairman, Jaco Odendaal, leading nationalretailers have shown confidence in the development and shopperscan look forward to a choice of 150 shops, boasting a well plannedmixture of offerings. This will include South African favourites as wellas original local stores and a variety of food offerings anchored byPick ‘n Pay.

Burgersfort has become the hub of the mining expansion ofplatinum group minerals and the Tubatse Mall development isexpected to add to the vital economic growth of the region.Odendaal predicts that between 800 and 1000 direct new jobopportunities will be created during the construction phase and inexcess of 1000 permanent and casual jobs will be created followingthe opening of Tubatse Mall.

The developers say they value community involvement and haveappointed community liaison officers and a BEE specialist to ensurethat the agreed BEE and local procurement targets are met.

A modern design, easy access to the site and 1000 parking bayswill all add up to a new and exciting shopping experience for thepeople of Burgersfort and surrounding towns.

ANC Youth League president, Julius Malema’slifestyle and finances came under scrutiny thisweek after reports published in City Press onSunday. On Saturday, Malema sought an urgent courtinterdict to prevent the newspaper frompublishing its story about his finances, a familytrust. This came after previous reports ofMalema building a R16 million house in anupmarket Johannesburg suburb. The reportalso included a businessman claiming to havedeposited R200 000 into Malema’s family trustfund in exchange for a tender.Opposition parties have since called for the SARevenue Service to launch an investigation intoMalema’s affairs. They claim that his lavishlifestyle is not compatible with his R25 000 amonth salary. This week the Youth Leaguelashed out at ABSA bank who they claim leakedconfidential information regarding the trust,Malema’s bond and vehicle finance. The Hawks on Tuesday received a docket afterAfriForum laid a complaint against Malema interms of the Prevention and Combating ofCorrupt Activities Act. It was handed to thecommercial crimes unit who will decide whetherto investigate it.We asked readers what they think about thewhole issue.

Should it be public or private?

This past weekend the very popular Foskor F21 or 21kmcharity fund raiser was held at Namakgale, Foskor’scommunity Center in Phalaborwa. Just over 1000 athleteslined up at the starting line to compete. Athletes were allhoping to win some of the R207,100. 00 that was on offer

for the winners. The current men’s racerecord stand behind thename of Ezeal Thlobo witha time of 1:01:55 which heran in 1997. Elana Meyer’srecord is still in place from1999, this stands at01:12:19.Modikwa again sent a verystrong field of athletes withthe likes of Peter Molapoand Leboka Noto.

Leboka Noto (photograph top left) proved once again why heis a force to be reckoned with by winning the masters race forrunners over the age of 40.This was the first race for the Modikwa athletes afterComrades, they used this race as a jump start for the comingCity to City and Soweto races. This shorter distance is oftenmore difficult to the long distance runners who did very well inthe Comrades Marathon. Fanie Matshipa (bottom left), runner-up of the Comrades Marathon 2011, also kick-started hisracing with this event.“Congratulations to all the runners, we are very proud of theirperformance,” Modikwa management said.
