Mines on the up

Anglo Platinum reported a six-fold increase in first-half profit on Monday, aided byhigher metal prices and forecast an increase in production.

AngloPlat, said it expected to refine and sell a total of 2,5-million ounces ofplatinum and it would keep unit cash costs per equivalent refined platinum ouncearound last year’s levels.

The company said headline earnings for the six months to end-June rose 532percent to R2,6-billion.

The company forecast production of platinum to increase to an average of 7,0 m2for 2010, 7,3 m2 for 2011. The company said it expects the price of platinum toaverage at least $1 500/oz, if South Africa’s economic recovery continues.

Gross sales revenue increased by R3,7-billion to R20,9-billion. Anglo Platinum’sCEO, Neville Nicolau, said on Monday Eskom was positioned to meet the growthrequirements of Anglo Platinum. He said that a study showed that Angloplat’sgrowth-related electricity requirements would be met, even in the event of furtherdelays to the Eskom’s own capital build programme.

“Certainly, in terms of our interaction with Eskom, I am pretty confident that we’llbe able to manage the ongoing relationship.”

In terms of the overall requirements for the next ten years, electricity was not aconstraint “directly”, but rather an aspect that the company sought to manage “quitecarefully”.

Ferrochrome production increases as wellOn the ferrochrome side rising ferrochrome demand has pushed the Xstrata-Merafechrome venture to produce 149 percent more product during the first half of thisyear.

Ferrochrome output rose to 157 000 t for the six months ended June 30, 2010,compared with the 63 000 t produced in the six months ended June 2009.

Xstrata noted that the strengthening of the rand against the dollar, as well as thehigher domestic electricity costs, had enabled ferrochrome producers to achieve a 35%quarter-on-quarter increase in the European benchmark ferrochrome price.

Not all that rosy

Meanwhile the rest of the economy is still feeling the aftershocks of the recession.“The news that a further 61 000 jobs were lost in the second quarter of 2010, on

top of the 171 000 jobs which disappeared during the first quarter, and the 870 000last year, amounting to a colossal 1102 000 since the beginning of 2009, will causemany workers to question whether 16 years of democracy have done them any goodat all,” Cosatu said after the release of the most recent job statisticts by Statistics SA.Cosatu said these latest job statics reveals that 5.5 million additional people havebeen plunged into a life of poverty, misery and destitution in just 18 months.

From pieces to peaceA potentially explosive situation in Dresden village outsideBurgersfort were defused by the Police on Tuesday when threemen demolished the shack of another because the disputed theownership of the stand where the shack was erected.

The owner of the shack, (in the centre of the photograph), onlyknown as Mahlatse, told Platinum Gazette the three men brokedown the schack and demolished his radio.

He duly called the Police, who actually arrived (the last timethey did not arrive in Dresden, riots and tyre-burning broke out).The Police ordered the ‘demolishers’ to re-erect the house, wherethe already installed pre-paid electricity box could still be seenhanging from a pole where the shack stood.

One of the vandals told the newspaper (left in the photograph),“we assisted my borther, it is our stand, but now we build theshack again, we understand that we must resolve the problempeacefully. Put it in the newspaper.”

Mahlatse opened a case at the Police station. Meanwhile a caseof public violence and assault with the intention to do grieviousbodily harm against 21 Dresden residents has been postponed inBurgersfort Masgistrate’s Court.

The case was opened after residents burned tyres and leegedlyassaulted a Police member in Dresden when the rlationship withthe Police soured after a shack was gutted.

Massive career exhibition heldThis week saw what was probably thebiggest career ehibition ever in the area.This exhibition was hosted by MarulaPlatinum Mine, Twickenham PlatinumMine, Asa Metals (Dilokong Chrome Mineand Smelter) and Modikwa PlatinumMine on Modikwa’s premises.Pupils from schools in the area werebused to the venue where all theirquestions regarding a future, not only inmining, but other related fields as well,were answered. At the opening, onTuesday, all the exhibitors andrepresentatives of the mines’management’ were present, it was statedthat learners should be informed about allthe opportunities in the biggest industryin their area. At the same time they canbe informed about what qualificationsthey should aspire to achieve in variousfields. The mines also said it is the idealto invest locally in education so thatexpertise can be drawn from a localhuman resources, further contibuting tothe economic upliftment in the area.The mines plan to present the EasternLimb Human Resources DevelopmentCareer Exhibition anually from now on.It is estimated that just more than 3000learners (who attended in batches of 200)over three days attended this firsexhibition. It was not all work and noplay. Refreshements were served to eachand every one after they “worked”themselves through the exhibition.

Ngululu caresLast week Friday, Ngululu Bulk Carriers from Steelpoort held a function at Ga-Malekane where theydistributed more than 150 blankets to residents of the area. Ngululu CEO, Mr Freddy Sinthumule,traditional leaders, municipal officials and emloyees of Ngululu attended the function.The company wanted to contribute something to the area in which they operate and has now started athree year project. They are not only distributing blankets, but also donating school uniforms, schoolshoes and the necessary jerseys to keep pupils from the area warm. They will also be keeping tabs on thechildren to monitor their progress in school. 50 Families were identified with the help of the Kgoshi in

each village where the donationsare given. After the official part ofthe function the guests wereentertained with a special meal.

On 25 July Tubatse Police launched a Community Policing Forum structre in Praktiseer.The launching was held at Itirele Primary school and it was led by Captainan TP Nemaitoni.On the day four CPF members were elected for Praktiseer Central as follows: Mr MandlaNgwane, Miss Mapule Mathelele, Mr Victor Komane and Miss Yolandah Magabe. Theother members will be elected on 01 August for Dark City, Shushumela Extension Twoand Extension Three. Thereafter all the elected members will form a CPF committee forPraktiseer. Cellphone business robbedOn 22 June the unknown men, aged between 20 and 30 years, robbed a number ofcellphones in Burgersfort at gunpoint. According to Warrant Officer Godfrey Mohale ofBurgersfort Police Station, one suspect entered the shop in the central business area andpretended to be a customer. When the shop owner tried to be of assistance, he pointed agun at the owner of the shop. Two other men who entered the shop with the man whopointed the gun, instructed the rest of the staff to go into the store room. In the storeroom they took the shop’s keys as well as 16 cellphones. The also robbed the employeesof the shop of four of their personal phones, valued at R7949. All three suspects escapedwith their loot and are still at large. Anyone with any information that can assist thePolice is requested to phone 082 402 8960 or 013 231 7231.

* A 20-year old man was arrested for housebreaking and theft in Praktiseer.He allegedly broke into a house on 24 July. The theft was reported to the

SAPS in Tubatse on 25 July and they managed to trace and arrest thesuspect. They also recovered stolen items such as clothes and blankets fromhim.

He appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 26 July and wasgranted R1000 bail. He must appear in court again on 18 August 2010.

* A man who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend on 25 July was arrested andcharged with assault with the purpose to inflict grievous bodily harm.

The 29-year old suspect was arrested on 25 July and appeared in thePraktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 27 July. He was released with a warningand must appear in court again on 1 September 2010.

* In another assault case, a 24-year old man was arrested after he allegedlyassaulted his ex-girlfriend at Riba Cross (Mandela Village).

This happened on 25 July. He was arrested on the same day and appearedin the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 27 July. He was released with awarning and must be in court again on 1 September 2010.

* Shanana Matemane and Auto Mokgethwa was this week sentenced to fourmonths imprisonment without the option of a fine after they were foundguilty of assaulting a 45-year old man.

They assaulted the man on 24 February at Mahlashi Village. Thesentencing took place at the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 26 July 2010.

Winter funat festival

The Winter Festival that took place last week Saturday drew large crowds through thegates at Winterveld Village. Is a strong opposition needed andThis week negotiations between theDemocratic Alliance (DA) and theIndependent Democrats (ID) to form acoalition was well on track.The parties are talking about coalitionforming in an attempt to take on the ANCin next year’s election.Although the details are still being ironedout, the general consensus was that theparties will work together to create astrong opposition.The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) leader, DrPieter Mulder also indicated that shouldthere be talks of coalition forming, hisparty and the ACDP should also beincluded.We asked readers whether they feel astronger opposition is needed and why.They also gave us their opinion on whatimpact a coalition between the DA and IDcould have locally.

Mnr. Ben Enslin said: “You got to have amuch stronger opposition. Their coalitionis not going to help much. We are inAfrica and we’ve got to accept it”.

Mr David Masha said: “No opposition isneeded. These guys will have no impact”.

Mr Jay Luvhani said: “A two third majoritywill still be with the ANC. Competition isgood, it helps to keep the act together”.

Mr Mahlomola Paile said: “I’m a cardcarrying member of the ANC, but theremust be a strong opposition to challengethe ANC. The ANC thinks they cannot bedefeated and then they are slow todeliver. The opposition however mustprove that they can deliver before we willbelieve that they have more than apolitical agenda”.

Dit het beteken dat die Buffels vandie beste ondersteuning nog by ‘n wedstryd gekry het.Die Misty Knights motorfietsryers het vir die spelers ‘n erewag met brullende enjins gevorm. Terwyl die spanne opgewarm het, het diemotorfietsryers ook die toeskouers vermaak deur die motorfietse te laat brul en die wiele te draai dat die rook trek.Die Buffels het nie met hulle laat sukkel nie en hoewel daar vir beide spanne redelik beserings was, het die Buffels uiteindelik met dielouere weggestap.Die Buffels het genoeg wedstryde gespeel om as ‘n klub te registreer en aan die liga deel te neem.Die klub sal in die toekoms verskeiewedstryde tuis speel en belangstellendes is welkom aan te sluit of hulle te kom ondersteun.
