67 minutes - why?
This question arose in the mind of this newspaper’s editor when he could not sleep, wondering how he will accomodate all the good stories of people, businesses and largecompanies doing good on Mandela Day that literally swamped the available space inPlatinum Gazette this week.
Newspapers are businesses and more pages cannot simply be added without themeans to pay for it. The other difficult question was, what to put on the front page?
As the editor travelled through the area this week, what he saw made him baulk. Thedirt that was not cleaned (and is still piling up), the neglect and vandalising of publicamenities and the fact that nobody seems to care about stuff like traffic lights not workingfor months and raw sewerage literally flowing through the streets in Burgersfort’s centralbusiness area (top photograph).
So there you have it, just a few photographs to remind everybody that 67 minutesonce a year is a good idea, but that much more will be needed from government, companiesand ordinary people to create a good living evironment for all. Top, right is the side of theroad between Burgersfort and Praktiseer, a terrible dumping site on both sides of theroad and the Leboeng Community Hall (right), with not a single door or electrical plug orfitting left, animal waste all over the floor, only two windows not vandalised.
The blade cuts in all directions. Read the good stories inside.

35 households of Dithabaneng Section in Ga-Motodi village near Praktiseer decided todo something about water provision at their houses. After taking delivery of a fivethousand litre water tank from the Department of Water Affairs, they installed the tankon a self-constructed platform at Ms Maria Phashwane’s house. They also acquiredtheir own pipes for reticulation to their houses and to connect the tank to a nearbyborehole. They now fill the tank once a weekand has vowed to use the water forhousehold purposes only (no irrigation). More than 100 virusescan cause the commoncold and most peoplesuffer from it at least
once a year.
It is winter again and the common cold is one of themost seen ailments this time of the year. The commoncold is an infection of your upper respiratory tract - inother words, your nose and throat. Anyone of more thana 100 viruses can cause a common cold. It is usuallyharmless although it may not feel that way. Some of the symptoms include a runny nose, sore throat, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, mild fatigue, slightbody aches or a mild headache, congestion and even alow-grade fever.Especially pre-school children are at risk of frequentcolds, but even healthy adults can experience it once oftwice a year. Most people recover from the commoncold within two weeks. If the symptoms do not improveit is recommended that you visit your doctor.Often a common cold can be treated with over thecounter medicines and immune boosters. Pain reliev-ers, decongestant nasal sprays, cough syrups and otherproducts are available from your pharmacy. Visit yournearest Kalapeng Pharmacy for assistance should youneed over the counter medicine for a common cold.
