Lights On

“I love depicting the play of light and shadow on the streets as well

as the many small alleys in Hanoi. I am passionate about portraying

the differing sorts of lights throughout the day. For this exhibition I

chose to paint the light and shadow when the lights are on in Hanoi.

I chose the title because, apart from my artistic appreciation of the

many colours and lights during that time, I also feel that “Lights On”

has an optimistic meaning for Hanoi. The city itself is developing

rapidly and the lights on every evening somehow make everything

seems more positive to me. I spent many days walking the streets

and along the lakes of Hanoi to wait for the sunset. When the sun

had not yet set, suddenly the city was lit up with so much vibrancy

from all the lights of the street. That moment of change was so swift

that it stirred strong emotions within me. I wanted to absorb that

moment of change, and express my emotions through my paintings.

I wanted to capture this kaleidoscope of lighting and colour, which

adds to the alluring beauty of Hanoi city at night.”
