Byrne Group leads our sector in terms of environmental commitment and action.

We have achieved BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products. With increasing focus on sustainable development, we recognise the need to prove that we build using responsibly sourced products. Achieving this standard demonstrates that we have the framework of organisational governance, supply chain management and environmental and social factors necessary to ensure the responsible sourcing of products.

At Byrne Group, we understand the impact of construction on the environment. With this in mind, we have developed performance targets and a highly responsible work ethic throughout the businesses in our Group, our supply chain and project partners.

We have made lasting environmentally sustainable improvements by responsibly sourcing products,

recycling materials, managing dust, noise and pollution, and driving out waste.

We have focused on removing waste from our sites by attacking up-stream processes and implementing stringent measurement protocols to ensure accuracy and best practice. Byrne Group has signed up to the government-backed initiative Waste and Resources Action Programme and is committing to halving waste to landfill.

SustainabilityPart of the Byrne Group vision is to build

responsible relationships with our community. We encourage methods of working that minimise

CO2 emissions, such as the use of video conferencing to reduce staff travel. We discourage the supply of company cars, instead replacing them with salary allowances; resulting in a smaller car fleet. We also operate a tax-free cycle purchase scheme. Using a software based tool to minimise heavy goods vehicle CO2 emissions, improve driver behaviour and increase journey efficiency.

It allows immediate access to average vehicle speed, fuel consumption and total distance, allowing us to evaluate factors that will help reduce carbon emissions.

We have pledged to help develop the employability and skills of young people, especially those from under-represented groups seeking a career in construction. Whilst the skill base in construction is depleting, we take pride in developing the local communities in which we work, leaving behind a legacy of trained young people upon project completion. We recognise the importance of investment in youth, and have a managed programme across the Group which supports the growth and development of a sustainable business, staff and workforce.

Energy ManagementIn line with the CRC Energy Efficiency

Scheme (formally known as Carbon Reduction Commitment), we are focused on reducing emissions throughout all our operations.

Byrne Group has installed Energy Management sensors on all sites where we are employed as principal contractor. Our software provides instantaneous real-time data, enabling us to view the energy efficiency of multiple sites. This enables us to establish accurate benchmarks against which to set future target reductions.

The software is in use at our consolidation and prefabrication centres, and initiatives include powering down all non-essential equipment and plant, and installing wireless sensors and timers. In just 14 days we witnessed a 78% reduction in energy usage in those specific facilities.

A new study by the Concrete Centre demonstrates how by using low waste concrete design solutions we can optimise our capabilities to reduce embodied carbon dioxide. In a typically sized commercial building, as much as 100kg/CO2/m2 – equating to a lifetime’s personal eCO2 of goods and services – can be cut simply by properly specifying concrete. The specification of a post-tensioned flat slab can save 15% and a reinforced concrete flat slab 35%.

Integrated energy and waste management tools are employed to minimise CO2 production and challenges both the embodied carbon and operational carbon to minimise environmental impact.

Water meters are fitted to all new projects, enabling monthly monitoring of water usage and allowing us to set reduction targets. We also encourage the use of spray taps and dual-flush toilets in welfare facilities.

beyond our premises and projects. As a sector, construction has one of the greatest impacts on society. Byrne Group takes its corporate responsibilities seriously and works hard to make a positive difference to both individuals and society.

We encourage and support employees to make a difference to causes important to them and our community. Every year we gift a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer time or equivalent in free materials, professional advice and services for charity or community projects.

With the help of all businesses within the Group and 33 supply chain partners, Byrne Group constructed a new home for 12 residents for the charity Build Aid for Epilepsy, located on the National Society for Epilepsy’s Chalfont Estate.

Byrne Group funded and produced a major publication for Construction Youth Trust. The publication inspires young people to make positive choices about their future, and also encourages UK construction companies to help sustain the charity’s work. Building Lives has been presented as a model of best practice to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission Construction Leadership Group. Byrne Group also continue to support the Lighthouse Club through the Jennifer Deeney Fund.

Alongside our efforts to reduce emissions we have supported the work of artist Angela Palmer, who used rainforest tree stumps from Western Africa for an important European ethical art installation called Ghost Forest.

The Shard, LondonThe Shard, London Bridge, at 310m-high, is the tallest building in Europe. Byrne Bros has carried out the concrete sub and superstructure works utilising ‘top down’ techniques to jump start the 259m-high slipform. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has recognised the innovative construction methodology at The Shard with The Building Award at The London Civil Engineering Awards.

Heathrow T2BByrne Bros is delivering the sub and superstructure works for the second phase of a satellite building to support Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 2 – T2B – for BAA. The project will deliver 10 new aircraft gates in the area to the east of Terminal 1. It will incorporate an underground link from the satellite to the main building of the new Terminal 2 development and a large baggage facility in the basement. The Byrne Bros package consists of 30,000 tonnes of reinforcement and 120,000m3 of concrete.

One New Change, LondonThe One New Change project is a prestige mixed retail and commercial development situated in the heart of London opposite St Paul’s Cathedral. The building incorporates 4 intricate Slip-formed cores and has a central atrium radiating out to New Change. The project has a 3 level basement that is constructed using ‘top down’ methodology. The building occupies virtually all the 10,000m2 footprint and thus requires extensive coordination with other trades to ensure efficient use of craneage and storage space which was minimal. A just in time policy for deliveries was essential in ensuring successful delivery of the project.

Central St Giles, LondonCentral St Giles is a new mixed development situated just south of New Oxford Street next to the Centrepoint Tower. It comprises of a fifteen storey residential block and a ten storey commercial block around a central piazza. Byrne Bros completed the construction of a reinforced concrete basement over the whole site footprint, including large 900mm wide reinforced walls along the St Giles High Street elevation to allow this side of the basement to cantilever out from the rest of the structure and preventing load transfer onto the proposed Crossrail tunnels.

Exterior, BBC Broadcasting House, LondonByrne Bros has completed reinforced concrete substructure and superstructure works incorporating anti-vibration bearings at the first ever purpose-built Broadcast Centre in the United Kingdom. BBC Broadcasting House is the headquarters for all of the BBC’s Radio, News and World Service programmes.

London 2012 Olympic StadiumByrne Bros was appointed to build the in situ concrete works for the sub and superstructure. We fabricated £5 million of precast concrete on site, in addition to delivering over £40 million of in situ concrete using a modular approach and pre-assembly approach to delivery.

Byrne Bros also completed the London 2012 Olympics Main Press Centre office and the design and build of the multi-storey car park at The London 2012 Olympics Athletes Village, blocks N1, N9 and N10.

Exterior, BBC Broadcasting House, London HSBC Tower, Canary Wharf, London

London 2012 Olympic Stadium Highcross Retail, Leicester HSBC Tower, Canary Wharf, London48-storey in situ concrete core and substructure construction for International Banking HQ in Canary Wharf. The core comprised shafts for 12 passenger elevators and escape stairs were constructed using an innovative Automatic Climbing shutter system. Superstructure construction was structural steel with composite lightweight concrete floor slabs.

Highcross Retail, LeicesterByrne Bros undertook construction of the concrete frame, car park, residential and retail units for the award-winning Highcross retail destination in Leicester. The structural frame was constructed in large span reinforced concrete, with heavy cantilevered beams to the perimeter allowing column lines to be set back, giving a distinctive column free glazed elevation line. One highlight of the design was a 30-metre span deep concrete beam constructed to carry the car park ramp over the shopping mall, involving complex falsework design and reinforcement detailing.

Demanding the least amount of disruption and inconvenience to the customers during the project’s life cycle, we always aim to deliver the highest standards of craftsmanship in even the most difficult of circumstances and budget restraints. Fortnum & Mason, LondonRefurbishment works to this flagship store were completed in time for its tercentenary celebrations. The works covered 50,000 sq ft over an 87-week programme and included the formation of a new atrium and roof light from the lower ground floor to the 2nd floor and the refurbishment of three retail floors and four restaurants. All works were undertaken while the store remained trading.

Henderson Global Investors Headquarters, BishopsgateHenderson Global Investors Headquarters at 201 Bishopsgate pushed the boundaries of design and quality with minimal environmental impact and won a BCO London fit-out project award. The 137,000 sq ft office boasts three large, high-quality office floors. In addition, a 12th floor client meeting room incorporates a ‘Theatre Style Presentation Room’ that is fully adaptable to any type of meeting and hospitality configuration through the use of sky-folding partitions and electronically controlled privacy glass.

The Savoy, LondonThe restoration of The Savoy has been the most ambitious hotel refurbishment project in London’s history. The Savoy was taken back to her early structure, stabilised and given an entirely new services infrastructure. Spaces were rationalised, existing architectural and design features were carefully restored or replicated, and new lift kitchens installed. The quintessential spirit and the design heritage of The Savoy were preserved and even enhanced.

Thomas More Square, LondonThomas More Square comprised of the refurbishment of a three building complex totalling 340,000 sq ft for Land Securities. Works to 1 Thomas More Square included a new BMS, cladding remedials, lifts, roof membrane and services. This was followed by a strip out to shell and core and fit out to Cat A for 80,000 sq ft at 2 Thomas More Square. The works to 3 Thomas More Square, a 225,000 sq ft 14-storey building with three floors in occupation, included an infrastructure upgrade and works to enhance the common areas of the campus.

30 North Audley Street, LondonChorus has been selected by Grosvenor as a framework partner to undertake construction work and 30 North Audley Street is one of the first schemes we will deliver. Comprising of the alteration and refurbishment of the existing corner property, both internally and externally, the roof configuration will be removed and a new mansard roof installed in its place, as well as structural alterations including new floors and external walls and retained front elevation. The development will provide luxury apartments and a restaurant on the ground floor.

Sainsbury’sIBP deliver store extensions using the next generation of retail building products, which consist of pre-engineered wall panels, floor and roof cassettes. The utilisation of offsite manufacture minimises trading disruption to the stores, as this form of construction allows stores to remain open throughout the installation of the components.

Building Information Modelling Solid body modelling software is used to accurately model components and investigate their interactions within complete assemblies. Each component is created with assembly rules ‘built-in’; this means that our custom software can automatically construct and generate complete building models, thereby reducing design time and resources. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is used to generate and manage data throughout the entire life cycle of the building; from inception, through construction, to demolition and recycling. Models are created that contain not only the building geometry, but are data-rich in terms of relations, time, costs and quantities.

AviationIBP project teams have considerable experience of working in sensitive aviation environments. Aviation operations, whether on the ramp, taxiway or terminals, are fast paced and demanding in order to turn aircraft around for fuelling, cleaning, provisions, passenger loading and unloading.

The BAA Corridor module has delivered nearly 1km of linear transfer building airside at Heathrow and Gatwick. A product driven design solution to BAA’s requirement for an operationally effective pier segregation product, the solution maximises the benefits of off-site fabrication in relation to quality, cost and delivery. The corridor product has also won a Construction Excellence award.

EcoCanopySebastian James’ review of the school building programme, published in 2011, rated the IBP EcoCanopy 8/10. Developed in response to a growing need for cost-effective, time-sensitive, environmentally friendly building solutions, the EcoCanopy product creates robust, permanent buildings with a lifespan comparable to conventionally built buildings. A prefabricated panellised system of lightweight concrete waffle floor slabs and walls, arranged in 4 x 4m or 4 x 6m-long modules, creates flexible design solutions for permanent buildings, capped by an exposed natural timber roof canopy. Inbuilt adaptability means wall panels can be ‘unplugged’ from one another to expand rooms or add additional storeys. The 80% off-site manufactured components and 20% bespoke design reduces risk, while not compromising the aesthetic finish for end users. The building envelope complies with Approved Document Part L 2010 maximum U-values and air permeability rates and Part L 2010 compliance is demonstrated using BRUKL calculations, or a full dynamic simulation method as detailed in CIBSE AM31. Conditions of production are also tightly controlled. Air pollution and dust from construction are reduced to virtually zero and vehicle emissions reduced when compared to conventional construction.EcoCanopy continues to expand its offer into larger education projects, as well as retail, commercial and public applications.
