The meeting was attended by members of all he sector based Com- munity Police subforums, sector commanders and Mitchell’s Plain Police station management. People’s Post previously reported on the issues relating to the MP- NWA, where members have been suspended in the midst of an inves- tigation into allegations of fraud and theft of funds within neigh- bourhood watches. (“Neighbour- hood watch members investigat- ed,” 30 August). Following a realignment process the association was disbanded by the Provincial cluster board. Dur- ing that meeting, a decision was taken by the cluster board to sus- pend the activities of the executive members pending investigation in- to the association’s dealings, in- cluding allegations of irregular ap- pointments (Watch groups in sham- bles, 18 October). At the meeting all parties had an opportunity to present their side of the matter to the MEC. Several audience members said they were upset by the banning of the association and felt that the in- struction issued by the police to col- lect all equipment from those not wanting to be part of the safety structures was “intimidating and traumatising to their families”. Some said that about six to seven police vans came to their homes de- manding bibs and vests of the asso- ciations. The allegations of fraud were raised; however it was not fully dis- cussed by the panel or the audience. Vernon Fortune, the previous chairperson of the association, add- ed that proper procedures was not followed when the association was disbanded. “The CPF cluster chairperson is at the centre of all these issues. We want to continue working, but we are not allowed to do so,” he says. Cluster commander, Major-Gen- eral Jeremy Vearey, confirmed that there is an “investigation of fraud allegations”. “The investigation involves the expenditure of a substantial amount of money over a long period of time. The investigation is ongo- ing and it’s extensive as it involves several roleplayers,” says Vearey. He added that there was no agen- da for the meeting; however he knew what was going to be dis- cussed. “I was off sick when all these things happened. This whole meet- ing was a political crusade against myself and it was deliberately or- chestrated. It’s a group of five peo- ple who are the minority and who are anti-street committees. “This group does not want to abide by the Constitution and affili- ate themselves to the subforums. I will not take instructions from any politician,” he says. He warned that people conduct- ing activities independent of the po- lice will be arrested. “People who are being searched without permission, who call them- selves watch members expose themselves to arrest on offences such as common and indecent as- sault,” he said. Michael Jacobs, chairperson of the CPF Cluster Board, says the meeting was nothing but “an at- tempt to attack the cluster com- mander, the Community Police Cluster Board and the subforums”. He added: “If the MEC had genu- ine concerns he would have set up a meeting with the station manage- ment to hear their side of the story first, before calling a general meet- ing. “The gathering to my knowledge was nothing but an attack on the po- lice and our community police fo- rum structures with party political undertones,” said Jacobs. “The facts are clear on the matter concerning these political neig- bourhood watches under the um- brella of the Mitchell’s Plain Neigh- bourhood Watch Association, who withdrew their affiliation to all of our community police forum struc- tures, in a letter dated 14 Septem- ber.” He said that “as a community cluster board “we are not accepting the directive by the MEC to meet with a group with John Cloete as the convenor”. “We therefore break off all en- gagements with Mr John Cloete or with this disgruntled group. “As per the Uniform Community Police Forum Constitution for Fo- rums and Boards 2010, all individu- al members or organisations wish- ing to be part of the Community Po- lice Forum, must register with their respective subforums,” Jacobs said. At the end of the meeting Plato ap- pointed a convenor, John Cloete, to assist and mediate a resolution process. A media enquiry was sent to the MEC’s office regarding the matter, but at the time of going to print, no response was forthcoming. ZILLE AND THE PRINCE: The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, took some time off from their five-day official visit to the country to visit the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on Saturday. The meeting was attended bymembersof all he sectorbasedCom-munity Police subforums, sectorcommanders and Mitchell’s PlainPolice station management.

SWIFT work by reservists sta-tioned at Mitchell’s Plain Police
station resulted in many lives savedfrom a shack fire in Khayelitsha re-cently. Many of the residents wereunaware of the approaching fire andimpending danger.
The incident took place in the earlyhours of the morning of Sunday 30 Octo-ber at the corner of Capitol Drive andLansdowne Road,near Khayelitsha.
Spokesperson forMitchell’s Plain Po-lice station, Consta-ble Voegt, says thata group of eightwere attending to anaccident scene on the corner of Auberand Swartklip Roads, Mandalay, whenthey spotted a cloud of smoke andflames about a kilometre from Khayelit-sha.
Someone was sent to investigate theincident as it appeared to be a structuralfire. A Navy officer, who had stopped atthe accident in his private vehicle, fol-lowed the officer to the source of smoke.
They discovered that shacks whereburning and immediately proceeded towake the occupants of nearby shacks,most of whom were unaware of the fireand impending danger.
“The officers called for backup as
there were people trapped in a shack.The first officers on the scene used awheel brace to force open a safety gateat this particular shack and managed toevacuate a couple and a one-month-oldbaby moments before the shack caughtfire,” he says.
At a second shack the memberskicked open a door and evacuated onewoman and three children before theshack caught fire. Other team memberskept evacuating people from nearbyshacks
The fire brigadeand the first Khay-elitsha patrol vanarrived. Teammembers contin-ued sweeping theshacks to ensurethat all people had
been evacuated from the area.About 30 shacks were evacuated and
several people were saved from the fireby breaking open shacks and waking upthe people. Many shacks were de-stroyed in the fire.
Once the fire brigade had the sceneunder control, the reservists were with-drawn from the scene.
“The members went beyond the scopeof their duties and could have ignoredthe incident taking place in a neigh-bouring area. They placed themselvesat risk to save the lives of others.” Voegtthanked all members for their willing-ness and courage.

An NGO at the school, called SEED, is in the process of building an outdoor classroomin the shape of an amphitheatre and the scope of their building operation will amount to nearly R10 million.SEED has worked with the school for many years, helping it to set up a permaculture garden. SEED hasbeen based at the school for about four years. They embarked on a project to start an Urban AbundanceCentre at the school. As part of this project, they started building a caretaker’s house (very small, and usingold tyres instead of bricks) as well as an outdoor classroom in the shape of an amphitheatre (also usingold tyres instead of bricks). FIREARMS, drugs and ammuni-tion were confiscated and 119
suspects arrested this weekendduring Crime Prevention opera-tions by the Mitchell’s Plain Policestation.
Operations started on Friday morn-ing and ended yesterday at morning at06:00.
Constable Jerome Voegt, spokesper-son for Mitchell’s Plain Police station,says on Saturday evening memberswere doing routine vehicle patrols in3rd Avenue, Tafelsig, when they no-ticed a suspicious-looking man stand-ing at the street corner.
“The suspect was searched and a9mm pistol with 14 live rounds werefound in his possession. A 28 year oldman was arrested for possession of afirearm without licence and the illegalpossession of ammunition,” Voegtsays.
On Sunday afternoon officers raideda house in Silverstream Street, Tafel-sig.Uponarrival officers’ searched thehouse and confiscated 10 packets oftik. A 26-year-old man was arrested forpossession of tik.
“Later the same day at about 15:15members raided another house inBlockhouse Street, Tafelsig.
During the search members discov-ered a .38 revolver with two liverounds.
A 26-year-old man was arrested forpossession of a firearm without a li-cence and the illegal possession of am-munition.”
Drug arrests:
During a two-day blitz the Mitchell’sPlain police arrested 17 suspects fordrug possession, confiscating sevenpackets of tik, two units of heroin, sixdagga cigarettes and a mandrax tablet.
On Tuesday officers were doing a ve-hicle patrol in 3rd Avenue Silver City,Tafelsig, when they spotted suspi-cious-looking men standing at thestreet corner.
The suspects were searched andthree packets of tik were confiscated.Later the same day at 19:00 officerswere doing another vehicle patrol inAtletiek Street, Beacon Valley whenthey noticed a suspicious-looking manin the street.
The man was stopped and searchedand members confiscated one packetof tik.
Operations on Wednesday andThursday led to the arrest of 19 sus-pects for drug possession, while 11units of heroin, 10 packets of tik, loosedagga and a dagga stoppe were confis-cated.
On Wednesday at 15:15 memberswere busy with vehicle patrol dutiesin Lincoln Street, Beacon Valley,when they spotted a suspicious-look-ing man crossing the street.
The 21-year-old man was searchedseven units of heroin were found in hispossession. Later the same day atabout 18:00, a suspicious-looking manwas spotted in Tulip Street, Lentegeur.
The 34-year-old man was stoppedand searched.
Two packets of tik were found in hisposssession.
All suspects appeared in the Mitch-ell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court oncharges related to possession of drugs.

THREE women of Khayelitsha havetaken a stand against social ills, espe-cially violence against women. Theyformed an organization to fight for therights of members of their communi-ty.
They’ve had some success and are nowexpanding their services to other commu-nities, including Mitchell’s Plain.
Khayelitsha Kuyasa residents Nosiphi-wo Mbolekwa, Mlibokazi Sobekwa, No-litha Thembani and Pamela Buyana havebeen recognised as Community Champi-ons by the social movement Prevention InAction (PIA) for their brave actions.
PIA, which seeks to prevent violenceagainst women through community ac-tions, has included the group’s story in its2011 Women’s Month DVD booklet.
As a single mother living in an areawhere rape and abuse is an everyday oc-currence, Mbolekwa decided that sheneeded to be part of the solution to theseproblems in her community.
Recruited by sector partner, RhemaUmtata Christian Church Ministries(RUCC Cares), Mbolekwa joined PIA andstarted holding informative meetings onhow to prevent violence against women.
After a man, arrested for raping hisown mother and killing his brother, wasreleased from jail and continued to abuseand instill fear in the community, Mbole-kwa and her PIA group knew that some-thing had to be done.
“We got together and decided to take astand. We were persistent. We marched,held community meetings and started apetition,” recalls Mbolekwa.
“The community outcry did not go un-noticed, and soon a meeting was held witha prosecutor.
“We told him that the PIA movementfights for people’s rights in communitiesand that we did not want to live in con-stant fear anymore.”
The group’s actions resulted in thecriminal being brought before the courtagain, where it was ruled that he shouldreturn to jail.
Memela adds that it is important to theorganisation that we recognise exempla-ry individuals such as Nosiphiwo and herteam. “These inspirational stories willencourage others to act,” Memela con-cludes.
Even though Mbolekwa has no formaltraining in social work, she considersherself a social worker.
“I received from WCN facilitators andnow know there is a specific way of deal-ing with issues, especially sensitive oneslike abuse.” She joined the PIA movementthis year, and started bringing the move-ment’s ethos to her own neighbourhood.
“Thecommunity isnowable tobreathe.I believe there is only one way to fight vio-lence and that is to work together as acommunity.” Mbolekwa and her groupnow have strong relations with the Khay-elitsha police and are working together tocombat violence against women in the ar-ea,” she says.

About two weeks ago Ibumped into one of theelderly women in ourroad. The moment Iasked her about her onlyson, she became emo-tional and shared herfeelings and experienc-es. She said I was the on-ly one that showed em-pathy, because there arelots of people in the com-munity threatening tokill her son.
He started using drugstwo years ago since hisfather died. His so-calledfriends exposed him todrugs andwhatever goeswith it. Lately, his fami-ly is paying the price, be-cause he steals every-thing he can get hishands on to support hishabit. People in the com-munity is frequentlyknocking on their door
demanding money foritems he stole fromthem. Ms Freda paysthem and sometimesborrow money to do so.“Just to keep the peace.”
Ms Freda is a womanof strong faith. She doesnot work and yet withthe little she has, shesupports her daughtersand grandchildren. Ispoke to this boy and heshared his feelings andhis regrets. All we needto do is to link him withthe correct people. Weare in the process of do-ing just that and certain-ly it will improve hisfamily’s state of health.
My advice or plea toothers: when we seesomeone in difficulty,try to help instead oflooking the other way.The Almighty knowswho will be next.

I have taken the initiative to express mysincere gratitude to People’s Post forgranting me this opportunity to thankmy community, my people and my lumi-nous country.
I am a grade 11 learner who shines andreflects with sheer pride and joy that on-ly South Africa has to offer. I believe thatthis country, its people and places oughtto be marvelled at with sheer admira-tion. I walk to school and find it exhila-rating and stimulating.
Every day seems to bring a sense ofdeeper love for my community and wehave discovered that we can share mutu-al love and respect for one another. It’sthe little things that catch my attention:the melodious sounds of the birds, thechildren buzzing off to school with ex-citement; the smell of fresh air that fillsthe earth, which dawns brings to revital-
ize my senses; and the amusingmini–door operators that bring a smileon my face; the vivid and sweet smell offlowers.Each day seems to be more beau-tiful. People who are up early to hastento work, yet spare a moment to greet orsimply smile. I look at all these beautifulthings with which my community hasbeenblessedand inamazement I remem-ber we are part of all this beauty.
I wish to thank my community mem-bers for constantly helping me with myassignments throughout my school ca-reer. TURFHALL, home of Western ProvinceSoftball, will get a communication hubequal to that of the soccer world cup, ac-cording to Noore Nacerodien, chairper-son of the Local Organising Committee(LOC). This is one of many improvementsfor theJuniorWomen’sWorldChampion-ship (JWWC) taking place from Wednes-day 7 to Saturday 17 December.
Nacerodien took People’s Post on a tour ofthe stadium for a final update on construc-tion work and a tour of the media centre. Ac-cording to Nacerodien there will be Wi-Ficonnections and normal streaming.
There are also changes to the fields that-players will enjoy, during the World Seriesas and after.
The main field has brand new roof sheet-ing, caged bull pens on either side of the fieldfor pitchers to warm up during the game, aswell as lights inside the bull pens.
The dugouts, which were previously avail-able for the use of teams only, are now divid-ed into sections, with a section for scorers op-erating the electronic scoreboard and the 20-second clock, which allows the pitcher 20 sec-onds before pitching again. The clock will becontrolled by another umpire.

ficers. Residents will receive permits, and willbe the only ones allowed to enter and exit thoseareas. “Residents have already signed to no ob-jections, so we should send a notice in the nextweek or two,” added Nacerodien.
Facilities for the umpires and scorers havealsobeen improved,withnew, extendedchangerooms. A Presidential suite will be decoratedwith historic pictures.
There is an upgraded medical facility.Smaller items such as new doors and win-
dows have been fitted.Nacerodien says that everyone is excited
about the event. “Australia has 53 spectatorscoming to our country. New Zealanders can al-so be expected,” he said.
The stadium will have plenty of no smokingareas, including the stand.
All entrances will have security personnel.There will be signs to direct spectators to smok-ing areas. Parking has been provided at CityPark, with a shuttle to Turfhall.
