The man was suspected of being involved in the shooting on Wednesday at the corner of Makou and Cormorant Streets. Residents of Rocklands are living in fear after the spate of shootings in the area. One man is dead and two others wounded in what seems be gang-related shootings. Its un- derstood that the shootings are be- tween the Nice Time Kids and School Boys gangs. Last week alone there were three shootings. Constable Jerome Voegt, spokes- person for Mitchell’s Plain Police station, confirmed the shooting in- cidents and said the “motives and all leads are still being investigat- ed.” The first shooting took place on Monday evening after 21:00, when a 29-year-old man was shot in the street. It’s understood the man was affiliated to the Nice Time Kids. Voegt says: “The police received a report of a shooting incident in Al- batross Street, Rocklands. At the scene officers discovered the man in the street with a bullet wound to his upper body. The victim was ad- mitted to hospital. “It is alleged the man was stand- ing in the street when an unknown man fired several shots at him. The motive is unknown and no one has as been arrested.” The police are investigating a case of attempted murder. The next morning at 08:30, anoth- er man was shot in Cuckoo Street. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a 20-year-old man in the street with a bullet wound to his up- per body. “It is alleged the victim was standing in the street when an un- known man fired several shots at him. He was admitted to hospital,” he says. Later the same morning a 24- year-old man was arrested in con- nection with the shooting. Officers found a CZ 9mm pistol and ammuni- tion in his possession. “The alleged motive for the shoot- ing is revenge,” says Voegt. It’s un- derstood that the man belonged to the School Boys gang. Swift action by City of Cape Town Traffic and Metro Police officers led to the arrest of a suspect. Two Traffic officers were attend- ing to a complaint of over-loading at the Hillside Primary School. They spotted one of the suspects, who still had a firearm in his hand, running across the street and through an open field in the direction of Weltevreden Road. The City of Cape Town’s Execu- tive Director for Safety and Securi- ty, Richard Bosman, says one of the officers gave chase on foot, while the other pursued the suspect in his patrol vehicle. “They apprehended the suspect and ordered him to stop and drop his weapon. The suspect threw the pistol to the ground, dislodging the magazine in the process and drop- ping a round of ammunition. The suspect then surrendered himself to the officers,” Bosman says. Bosman commended the Traffic and Metro Police officers for their swift reactions. “Their quick thinking, brave and decisive action resulted in the ar- rest of the suspect and confiscation of the illegal firearm and ammuni- tion. As a result, there is one less il- legal firearm in the community for committing acts of violence,” he adds. The suspect will appear soon in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate Court on charges relating to at- tempted murder and possession of a firearm without a licence. In a separate incident on Wednes- day another man was killed at the corner of Makou and Commorant streets. The victim was a member of the Nice Time Kids. Voegt says that at the scene offic- ers discovered the body of a 37-year- old man with two bullet wounds to his upper body lying in the street. The man was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. “It is alleged that unknown sus- pects fired several shots at the de- ceased and he collapsed in the street,” says Voegt. Voegt confirmed that the shoot- ing incident did not occur on Hill- side Primary School, “but in the street next to the school.” “We have increased visible pa- trols, through sector policing and crime prevention patrols, to ensure the safety of learners at Hillside Pri- mary and neighbouring schools, and to bring the perpetrators of this murder to book,” he says. A resident who spoke to People’s Post on condition of anonymity, for fear of reprisal, says things in the area was fairly quiet until Monday. However now it has become danger- ous. “As residents we are living in fear, because we don’t know where the next shooting will take place. The shooting on Wednesday was ad- jacent to Hillside Primary School, and we had to rush to school to get our children and grandchildren who are now traumatised by the shootings,” he says. It is understood that the shoot- ings are related to a drug turf war in the area. Anyone with information can call Constable Ivan Ryneveld on (021) 370-1738 or (021) 370-1600. The debt counsellingprocess unlockedIn this instalment of our fort-nightly legal advice column, the focus is on debt counsel-ling

What is debt counselling?DEBT counselling is a process

to assist people who are over-whelmed by debt and can nolonger meet all their commit-ments. Debt counsellors negoti-ate and restructure credit agree-ments to allow the consumer tomake regular contributing in-stalments. This is a voluntaryprocess, but can also be orderedby a magistrate.

When meeting with a debtcounsellor it is important to betotally honest about your situa-tion. This makes it easier for thedebt counsellor to make an accu-rate assessment of your needsand abilities and to assist you.

Consumers tend to shy awayfrom administrators and debtcollectors, but the debt counsel-lor is there not only to serve thecredit providers but consumersas well.

Debt counsellors will makecontact with your credit provid-ers as soon as you have volun-teered yourself for debt coun-seling. The submission processlasts 60 working days, duringwhich:

1. the debt counsellor makescontact with all your creditors torequest the balance certificates;

2. an attorney is appointed torepresent you in court whenneeded;

3. the new instalments are ne-gotiated.

This 60-day period is by nomeans a payment holiday. Thecredit agreements youhavemuststill be serviced. However, thedebt counsellor will arrangewith you to pay the money intoa distribution account.

Once all creditors have agreedto the terms, and your 60 days areover, you are considered to beunder debt review until all yourcredit agreements have been set-tled.

Your debt counsellor must beissued with clearance certifi-cates for each of your creditagreements.

While you are under debt re-view you will be unable to enterinto any new credit agreements.Once your debt counsellor issuesyou with a clearance certificate,it takes about 5 to 10 workingdays for your status to bechanged with the credit bureaus.

Who should apply for debt re-view?

If you can not meet yourmonthly instalments, or if youare receiving default noticesfrom your creditors, then thisprocess could assist you.

Robbed in the drivewayMELISSA PAPIER

A WESTRIDGE man escaped withhis life after he was robbed at

gunpoint of R10 000 in his driveway. The suspects took the keys to his yel-low Opel Ascona and fled the scene.

The 74-year-old man was too trauma-tised to speak to People’s Post. However, his daughter, who asked not to be namedfor fear of her family’s safety – tells Peo-ple’s Post that her father was followedhome on Thursday after withdrawingmoney from Absa bank at Westgate Mall.

“My dad got home and was just writingsomething in the car when he heard aknock on the car’s window; as he lookedup he saw two african men, who demand-ed the money he withdrew. They knewexactly which pockets contained themoney.” She says her father didn’t see acar following him home and the streetwas “empty and quiet.”

“After taking the car, the money andother personal belongings, the men leftand my son tried to follow them on foot.He came home after my dad warned himthat they had a gun. However, minutesafter he returned the robbers camearound again, pointing the gun at us. All

we could do was go into the house andclose the door.” She says that the wholeincident seemed well planned as the rob-bers knew that her father had withdrawna large amount of cash.

“We went to the bank to inform themof the incident and they were very non-chalant about it. We don’t want the mon-ey back as it can’t replace a life. Instead, stricter measures should be in place atthe banks.”

Spokesperson for Mitchell’s Plain Po-lice station, Constable Jerome Voegt, confirmed the incident, saying the policeare investigating a case of car-jackingand armed robbery.

“Residents should avoid making largecash withdrawals from the bank orATMs. It would be wiser to withdrawsmaller amounts, spread over a period oftime. People should be more vigilantabout their surroundings when using thebank and ATMs,” says Voegt.

He urged residents to rather make elec-tronic transfers when needing to paylarge amounts of money to beneficiaries.

“Residents need to be extra alert andvigilant now as the festive season ap-proaches and criminals know that peopleare receiving bonuses and spending largeamounts of money.”

THE Mitchell’s Plain Police station isleading the pack now that anotherfemale officer has qualified as a

member of the Tactical Response Team(TRT). She is the second woman to makethe Western Cape team.

Constable Audess Links of Mitchell’s Plainrecently completed the gruelling six-weekcourse in tactical manoeuvres and survivaltechniques.

She had joined the South African PoliceServices in July 2004.

Sheworked in theRapidResponseUnit dur-ing 2006 and then in the Crime PreventionUnit in 2007.

Links was the first female officer to workon the Rapid Response Unit (RRU) in Mitch-ell’s Plain. At the time she was the youngest, and smallest, female to work on the RRU.(“Adrenaline junkie cop stands tall,” People’sPost 24 October 2006).

The RRU is a specialised unit that dealswith high-profile cases. Links was one of thefirst officers to join the unit shortly after itwas established. RRU training includes ad-vanced driving, tracker, street survival, hu-man rights and domestic violence. She standsat the forefront of stamping out crime out inMitchell’s Plain. Constable Links is not an av-

erage person. It would be foolhardy to judgeher by her petite appearance, there is defi-nitely more to her than meets the eye.

Chatting to People’s Post, Links says she en-rolled for the TRT course because she thriveson adrenaline.

“I saw the TRT as a new challenge. It wasa newly established unit and there were nofemales, and I decided to give it a try.”

She says that the most difficult part of thecourse was the Rural Phase, which entailedlearning to survive in the bush for two weekswith minimal food.

“This was the hardest part of the course. Itwas draining. There were six people in agroup and the resources had to be sharedamong them.”

Mitchell’s Plain Cluster office started lastyear with an initiative to mentor femalemembers. Theprogrammecontinueswith theaim of increasing the number of female mem-bers in the TRT in the Mitchell’s Plain Clus-ter.

. Meanwhile, another TRT member fromMitchell’s Plain has qualified for the NationalIntervention Unit (NIU).

Constable Zuko Mabheka underwent amentorship programme during 2009 and 2011,progressing to Crime Prevention and theTRT. Training continued under the authorityof Major-General Jeremy Veary and the guid-ance of Colonel Cass Goolam, resulting in Ma-

bheka qualifying to enter the six-month NIUcourse. Mabheka aslo boasts a Black belt (1stDan) in karate.

Minding their own businessMELISSA PAPIER

THE Mitchell’s Plain Work Group, whichis affliated to the Cape Town Associationfor the Physically Disabled, has set itssights on starting its own business: sell-ing their hand-made arts and crafts.

The organisation started in October 2005and makes crafts with sucker sticks andwashing packs. Their output includes jewel-ery boxes, tissue boxes, fruit bowls, toys andvegetable stands.

The purpose of group was to encourage dis-abled people to get involved in their commu-nity and become active members of society.

Coordinator Ashleen Hunter tells People’sPost that she started the group because shewas tired of sitting at home.

“I wanted to do something with my life andnot just sit around waiting for opportuni-ties.” Funds from the department of socialdevelopment is used to buy equipment. How-ever, they still need the support of the com-munity, local businesses and religious insti-tutions to help the group become self-suffi-cient.

Hunter urged disabled people to get in-volved with the Cape Town Association forthe Physically Disabled, which offers itsmembers many opportunities.

ZainoneshaJacobs, amemberof theorgan-isation, says she has learnt a lot.

“I have worked at various places, but thisis where I feel most comfortable and at

home.” Another member, Moenier Lakay, added that before he was introduced to thegroup he was very depressed.

“I was bored at home. When I became amember of the club, I had something to lookforward too. We socialise and offer advice onproblems we share.

“Here at the club we have various opportu-nities and we learn that we are capable of

achieving success,” he says. The group meets every Monday, Wednes-

day and Thursday from 10:00 until 14:00 inthe Eastridge Community Centre.

The group will hold an exhibition at theWeltevreden Recreation Centre in Rock-lands, from 10:00 until 14:00.

Marching to gloryMELISSA PAPIER

THE Dennegeur Avenue PrimarySchool Marching squad excelled at

this year’s marching competition, butwill not be resting on their laurels. Theplan is now to teach the the squad the artof music.

Squad manager Teano Patience tells Peo-ple’s Post that the group would like to getmore children involved in the squad.

“We would like to start a school band toaccompany the squad. We also want our owndrummers to accompany us. We would liketo acquire brass instruments, so that chil-dren from grade one to three can start learn-ing how to play musical instruments and toread music,” says Patience.

He said the squad started training in Janu-ary this year and training sessions intensi-fied in the last few weeks before the drillingcompetition.

This is the second time that the school par-ticipated in the Mitchell’s Plain PoliceMarching and Drilling Competition. Lastyear the squad competed in the primary

school category and they won the Best New-comer award. However, this year the schooldecided to participate in the big league andentered the high school category.

“The squad changed their routine a weekbefore the competition and learnt a new rou-tine in four days. The response has beenoverwhelming. The squad has proven thatwith dedication and long hours anything ispossible,” he says.

The squad has 46 members, starting fromGrade 3. The group practised for the compe-tition from 17:30 until 20:00, three times perweek and on weekends and during the schoolholidays .

“We would like to continue participatingin our school uniform. However, this is diffi-cult because not everyone has a school uni-form.” The squad needs at least 100 pairs ofshoes, shirts, socks, pullovers, and greypants in various sizes. “This way they don’thave to run around, borrowing clothes fromfellow pupils.”

Anyone who can assist the squad can con-tact Nazir Esack, the assistant coach on083 685 5161 or email [email protected].

Health boost for M’PlainADERMATOLOGYclinicwasopenedat

the Mitchell’s Plain CommunityHealth Centre (CHC) last Tuesday by theprovincial Minister of Health, TheunsBotha.

In his address Minister Botha said that theWestern Cape has 40 of the 153 trained derma-tology nurses on the African continent.

The dermatology clinic is one of its kind be-cause the majority of dermatology nurses of-fer their services as part of the primary healthcare package, not as a specialization.

Minister Botha added that the Western CapeGovernment’s Health Vision 2020 will providehealth care technology and infrastructure, and ensure a sustainable income to providehealth services in accordance with the needsof communities.

“The need for a dermatology clinic in Mitch-ell’s Plain was identified based on the numberof patients presenting with skin problems.

The project was initiated in November 2010when patients discharged from Groote SchuurHospital and Red Cross Children’s Hospital re-

quired follow-up services. The aim was tobring the service closer to the community thatneeded it most. Patients have been attendingthe clinic since June this year.”

Two of the centre’s consulting rooms wererenovated and converted into a dermatologyclinic with an area of 20 square metres.

The clinic can attend to about 30 patients perday. The services are supported by specialistsonce a week, providing research opportuni-ties to establish reasons for skin problems inthis area.

Examples of skin conditions to be treatedare eczema, acne, fungal infections, nail prob-lems, ulcers and scabies.

The clinic will be open for children and ba-bies every morning from 07:00 and 11:00, buton Thursday the clinic is for adults only – withthe same operational hours.

Primary school pupils have an opportunityon Monday to Wednesday at 13:00, and highschool pupils at 14:00.

“The clinic is nurse-driven. The facility wasfortunate to have a clinical nurse practitioneralready trained in Dermatology Services.”

Design destinyTHE MOTHER CITY has been awardedthe title of the world’s Design Capital for2014. Perhaps fittingly so, as this will bethe year we celebrate two decades of de-mocracy.

The win confirms that our beloved“Slaapstad” is boldly taking the globalstage, to become a major world player anddrawcard in the potentially lucrativetourism industry.

In 1994 tourism’s contribution to SA’seconomy was reported as no more than2% of Gross Domestic Product.

However, with awards such as this andothers filling up our trophy cabinet, tour-ism is fast becomingoneof the top earnersof foreign currency.

In the midst of a global recession, wehave something to brighten our spirits:thepromise of greater investment and, wehope, a better life for all.

These awards translate into tangiblebenefits for everyone.

Every small business that stays openfor a little while longer, means that thecashier, the cleaner, the janitor have jobsfor a little longer, and able to supporttheir families: a little foreign spend goesa long way.

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille hascommitted herself to work harder to usedesign as a tool to clean the remnants ofapartheid and bring communities togeth-er across the “geographical divide”through improved, innovative design.

The award means that future genera-tions of Capetonians will grow up in a cityvery different to what most of us haveknown.

They will benefit from maximum expo-sure to other cultures as more flock to ourshores. As the winds of change continueto sweep through, Cape Town is fast be-coming a city of the world.

Hold on to your hats! Today it is goodto be Capetonian.

WITH reference to my first letter to People’sPost on 11 October, comments by the ChiefEnumerator of

the 2011 Census this morning on SABC TVnews cannot go unchallenged.

Not only did this census official repeat thethreat of imprisonment and fines, he alsoplayed, what

could be considered, the race card.He said words to the effect that questions

about the content of the census were mostlyasked by rich people, implying white peoplewere rich versus the black people who arenot rich.

That was bad enough. But it got worse when he answered ques-

tions by the SABC TV presenters about ques-tions like “Do you have a washing machine,a fridge, a TV...”

People wondered what this had to do withestablishing how many people lived in our

country.The gentleman’s answer was astonishing.

He suggested that those questions should beasked of the marketing companies, whoneeded that kind of information for theirbrands and promotional strategies.

What? Is the census a means of market re-search? And if so, what has the governmentgot to do with this?

Worse, how can we be threatened with im-prisonment if we do not disclose the contentsand amenities in our homes?

We would not present this information ona platter to home-invaders, gangs, theft andbreak-in syndicates and con-artists.

Has Census 2011 gone totally of its rocker?Cases of impostors have already been re-

ported, aswell as census takerswithout iden-tification. The whole thing seems to be bun-gling to the tenth degree.JUSTICE OF THE PEACE

ANDRE BAKKES

DANA Winner is nostranger to being

adored.

The gorgeous and talent-ed Belgian singer has beena popular performer inSouth Africa for manyyears. She has also donethousands of interviews, soshe takes gawking journal-ists in her stride.

People’s Post spoke to hera few days before her recentshow with Patrizio Buanneat GrandWest Casino. Sad-ly, it was a telephonic inter-view. But, yes, it is possibleto gawk over the phone.

“I’ve been to South Africaabout 10 or 15 times. It’s al-ways very exciting to comehere,” says Winner.

“I always tell peoplewherever I go that South Af-rica has become my secondhome and it’s because of themany things you have inone country. This countryhas very warm and welcom-ing people and once you arein their hearts then you cannever leave.”

This last part is certainlytrue for the stuttering, star-struck person asking thequestions.

Winner bubbles on:“Cape Town has changedthrough the years. It’s nowa very colourful place, and

whenever we work thereit’s like being on holiday.”

Winner performed atGrandWest Casino before, but she has never shared astage with Patrizio.

When asked if it’s truethat he is a flirter of note, she exclaimed “I can hon-estly say that I don’t knowhim that well, but he’s anItalian; what do you expect? No, really, I only met him anhour ago and he’s a verynice person. I recorded myvocals in Belgium and himin South Africa. Technicalequipment nowadaysmakes it easy to combinethose things. I can honestlysay that it has become avery beautiful jewel.”

She emphasises the im-portance of voices going to-gether, which “creates a bitof magic” but this journalistis wrestling with an acutebout of Patrizio-jealousy.

A change of subject was inorder.

Does someone who hasperformed on stage thou-sands of times still get nerv-ous?

“Always! But I need it.When I used to play volley-ball, I played much betterwith nerves. It’s the samewith performing,” she says, probably with an adorableglint in her eyes.

Sometimes the stagelights blind her from the au-

dience, which she admits is“difficult”.

“It’s very nice when yousee the people and their re-actions. Otherwise it’s likesinging in a studio. But youfeel the audience. That’s al-so very exciting.”

Her favourite song is “Letthe children have a world”which she apparently al-ways delivers from the bot-tom of her heart.

“I’d like to sing it all overthe world. It’s a beautifulmessage and I think wehave to stay a little bit likea child. If we think like achild and feel like a childthen we know what the songis all about. Children will al-ways be our future.” Herdaughter is now 12 yearsold, and motherhood andstardom is a delicate jug-gling act.

“She has her own thing.Mom’s music is like... youknow. She loves dancing!”

Much like her daughter,Winner also likes to prac-tise inprivate and, yes, evenin the shower.

As for words of wisdom,Winner has plenty. “I al-ways say that one should al-ways dream. Sometimesthey do come true. If youworkhardenough, thenyoucan achieve anything, buttry to do it in a fair way.”

Thank you Dana! I willkeep on dreaming.

There can be only one Winner

Reaching for apositive lightLYNN PRINS

SINCE drillingwas introduced

to Beacon Hill bythe Mitchell’s PlainSAPS in 2009, thesquad has contin-ued to grow.

Out of a squad of 20,eight members arepart of the WP Drill-ing and Marching As-sociation. They com-pete against armybands, police, andpipe bands, primaryand high school drillsquads in Mitchell’sPlain.

Allan Liebenberg, principal of theschool, says: “It’sgood to know thatMitchell’s PlainSAPS is interactingwith the pupils andguiding them in apositive way. It is al-ways good to seewhen those who can-not fit in academical-ly, fit in as well as they do in sport. It givesthem their own light.”

Natasha Saayman, leader of the drillingsquad, says “Being part of the drilling squadteaches you how to respect one another, howto communicate with people and it also teach-es discipline. Since I’ve been part of the teammy life has changed, I have gone to many plac-es and I now know what it is to make sacrific-

es. I can see that hard work pays off.”Ebrahim Cook, the drummer of the squad,

says: “I am passionate about what I do and itkeeps me out of trouble, because I like music.”

However, drilling is not the only sport thatinterests the pupils as there are also pool play-ers, cross-country runners and cyclists, all do-ing something positive for themselves andtheir school.

MAKING THINGS HAPPEN: On Friday 21 October Mitchells Plain No1 Primary Schooland two other schools received a soccer kit and a vegetable tunnel garden. Accordingto Mandla Zwane, Nedbank’s head of partnership and relationships, the soccer kits willencourage children to participate in sport and become socially active. Pictured herefrom left are: Nico Mzalisi (Councillor for Ward 33 in Samora Machel), Namhla Magida(teacher at Naluxolo Primary School) Karen Seboa (Nedbank Area Manager), NicoletteDaniels (Nedbank Branch Manager, Westgate Mall), Wayne McKay (comedian), andMandla Zwane (head of partnership and relationships, Nedbank). The tournament received coverage from all communitynewspapers includingthe Son. Rashied dedicated the prize to thememory of the late Brian Gaffney (sports reporter). “Brian Gaffneytaught me communitymedia, may his legacylive on and serve as aninspiration to others,”he said. World Championshipon your doorstepLYNN PRINS

THIS seems to be the year of theWorld Cups, starting with the

cricket and followed by rugby.

And now, in a mere 35 days, 16 softballteams will arrive for the ninth JuniorWomen’s World Championship (JWWC).

I can proudly saywe do unite when itcomes to backing ourSA teams.

It’s amazing howhosting the 2010 Soc-cer World Cup hasgiven us a supportiveattitude. The successof that world eventwill be the talk of thetown for many yearsto come.

However, it is aboutmore than just sup-port for the teams, butsupport for and beliefin our country’ abilityto host a successfulevent.

Well, this majorevent deserves noth-ing less and I’ll haveyou know that thesoftball team SA isstill hard at work.

They’re making themost of this shot at be-ing the best they canbe, whether at hosting or competing.

Because I would like readers to sharemy love of this beautiful game of softball,I would like to give the background andhistory of the tournament and then intro-duce the winning teams.

The first International Softball Federa-tion hosted the JWWC in 1981 in Canada, exposing young talent to top competition, while introducing the game to many.

Japan were crowned champs that year,

and China in ’85. The USA took the crownin ’87 and Japan took in back in ’91. In’95 the Americans took the title again, while Japan did so again ’99 and ’03. In’07 the title reverted to the USA.

With that being said, the USA, Japan,China, and Australia all received medalsin previous World Series.

Australia is the only team not to havetaken gold yet. In 2007,in the Netherlands,South Africa partici-pated for the first timeand finished 15th.

So now we all knowwho the tough con-tenders are and it’spossible that theteams mentioned willsee a final.

Perhaps the SAteam will surprise usall and make the fi-nals, who knows, evenwinning the tourna-ment perhaps?

They have homeground advantage af-ter all.

With the SA teamranked 12th they willneed all our support.

The tournamenttakes place fromWednesday 7 Decem-ber until Saturday 17December at TurfhallStadium, in Craw-

ford, Athlone.Participating teams are Argentina

ranked 7th, Australia ranked 3rd, USAranked 1st, Japan ranked 2nd, Canadaranked 4th, Puerto Rico ranked 5th, Chi-nese Taipei ranked 6th, China ranked8th, New Zealand ranked 9th, Russiaranked 13th, Germany ranked 14th, SAranked 12th, Botswana ranked 15th Bra-zil ranked 14th, Zimbabwe ranked 15thand Czech Republic ranked 16th.

Developing young starsLYNN PRINS

TWELVE years ago goal-keeping legend Farouk

Abrahams had a burning pas-sion to start a goalkeeper’sacademy. His aim was to pro-duce only great goalkeepers. He feels the position is ne-glected and, speaking as aformer goalkeeper himself,he thinks specialised trainingis needed. However, there is alack of sponsorship. “All wewant to do is provide hope forthe future,” he said.

In 2002 Abrahams was ap-pointed goalkeeper coach forBafana Bafana at the SoccerWorld Cup in Korea and Japan, and worked with the likes of An-dre Arendse, Hans Vonk, andCalvin Marlin.

“It was my greatest honour torepresent my country, it didn’tmatter that I didn’t play on thoselevels, but the fact that I was partof coaching World Cup goalkeep-ers, was a huge achievement andmoney can certainly not buysuch glory,” he said.

When asked who he regards ashighly rated, he said: “ItumelengKhune is a highly rated player. It’s just a pity that he had fakedan injury against Sierra Leone. It just showed bad character.Nonetheless, he is good.” He be-lieves Moeneeb Josephs is also ahighly rated player.

Abrahams played for CapeTown Spurs, Maritzburg United,Jomo Cosmos, and Bush Bucks. He coached for Santos, AjaxCape Town, and Hellenic.

Farouk Abrahams GoalkeeperAcademy (FAGA) has been spon-sored for eight years by Metro-politan, but since they merged

with Momentum, Abrahams isunsure whether the sponsorshipwill continue. The academycoaches about 80-100 children, without any disappointments, from 7 to 25 years old.

The academy also teachess lifeskills. “On many fronts, and itbecame clear to us that the needsof the young people in the Acade-my extend beyond merely that ofacquiring goalkeeping skills. Those living in disadvantagedcommunities are particularlyvulnerable, as they live in pover-ty and must often survive harshand difficult experiences in theiryoung lives,” he said.

“Many of the boys and girls at-tend the training sessions hun-gry, and lack simple life skills.”FAGA is free and is based at thecorner of Wynberg Sports Club,Rosmead Avenue. Abrahamsfeels that the 2010 World Cup leg-acy is not benefitting academiessuch as his. They still strugglewith funding and he appeals tocorporates for help with spon-sorship for sustainability.

“Danny Jordaan and I spokeover the weekend, and I was toldthat in the new year relevantWorld Cup funds will be madeavailable, but criteria will applyand it will probably be region-bound.
