Hundreds of people cross the railway line at Kapteinsklip station daily, seemingly ob- livious to the risk they are exposing them- selves to. And while Metrorail has confirmed that fencing for Kapteinsklip station had been ear- marked in the next capital cycle in April, resi- dents feel the problem has already been left unsolved for far too long. Rachel Abrahams says she recently chased two children off the tracks after she spotted them playing between the lines. “It looked like they wanted to see if they would be hurt if they laid right in the centre of the two tracks. Yes, it’s a stupid idea, but why is the area unenclosed in the first place?” she asks. “Children see commuters and pe- destrians crossing the line and think it’s fine because everyone else is doing it. This is a death trap. Do we have to wait for someone to die before those with power take notice?” Despite about a kilometre of fencing being needed to secure the line, Metrorail’s region- al manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz says fencing up train stations are prioritised according to the urgency of the need. “The purpose of the fence was primarily de- marcation of boundary and that in its origi- nal state would not have deterred wilful entry onto the rail reserve by vagrants or people with criminal intent,” he says. The provincial department of Transport and Public Works has committed to contrib- uting over R1 million per annum for refenc- ing projects over the next three years. When People’s Post visited the station, al- most 20 people crossed the line in 45 minutes. This includes pupils, adults and even moth- ers pushing their babies in prams. Should the line be fenced, pedestrians would have to cross at the footbridge at Kapteinsklip sta- tion, which is currently hardly in use. Lee-Ann Davids from Rocklands lives oppo- site the unenclosed railway tracks. “It is dangerous, but convenient. If a person from Rocklands does not have taxi fare to go to Town Centre, you can just walk over the tracks to get there,” she explains. Swartz stresses that crossing railway tracks is illegal. “Offenders run the risk of fines or prosecution if caught,” he says. But this isn’t the only issue on the line as residents say the tracks are also used to hide and sell drugs. Lucian Davids lives straight opposite the train line and claims dealers are taking ad- vantage of the easy access they have in and out of Tafelsig and Rocklands across the line, as police vehicles would have to drive through smaller roads, onto AZ Berman Drive and over Spine Road to get from one area to the other. “You see them brazenly selling and hiding the drugs here every day,” he says. Ward councillor Danny Christians has committed to addressing the matter with the police, railway police and Metro Police. Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson, Constable Jerome Voegt, says they are not aware of the drug allega- tions. “However we do want to urge residents to forward the information to us. They can call Warrant Officer Ray- mond Solomon on 0 082 378 9327 or Captain Le- on Jooste on 0 079 894 1534.” Furthermore, Lucian Dav- ids suggests that palisade fencing be used as “the drug- gies will just steal the iron one”. Christians, says he had previously engaged with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Afri- ca (PRASA), but it yielded no results. “The fencing of the railway line from Ka- pteinsklip station to Lentegeur Station and beyond is a process that Subcouncil 12 started many years ago with PRASA. However, these negotiations presented very little develop- ment on this issue which has huge financial implications on PRASA.” Pedestrians cross the line Pedestrians Pedestrians cross cross the the line line OFFENDERS: Primary school children under adult supervision cross the tracks as they make their way home. LONG queues, few answersand no end in sight.

This is what some pensionerssay they have to experiencewhenthey try to re-register with theSouth African Social SecurityAgency (Sassa).Sassa is in the process of re-reg-

istering more than 15 million so-cial grant beneficiaries across thecountry. The re-registration process

comes after a new company wasawarded the tender to continue,at a reduced cost, the payment ofsocial grants over the next fouryears. Cash Payment Services(CPS) was awarded the tenderlast year.Themove is part of the agency’s

bid to rid the system of corrup-tion and ensure that social grantsare paid to the right people. However, as People’s Post previously re-

ported, a number of pensioners in Mitchell’sPlain were robbed of their grant despite hav-ing re-registered onto the new biometric sys-tem last year (“Pensioners robbed of grant”,14 August).About 12 pensioners had their pension elec-

tronically withdrawn just days before theywere supposed to collect it at the RocklandsCivic Centre.Strandfontein resident Russell Bennett

says he arrived at theRocklandsCivic CentrelastMonday to re-register as indicated to himon a letter he received fromSassa lateDecem-ber. However, hewas turned away alongwitha number of other elderly people who weretold to return on Wednesday.“We were told that they (the CPS officials)

had only been given 200 cards for the day andtherefore could not re-register anymore peo-ple,” Bennett explains. However, Sassa spokesperson Shivani Wa-

hab says: “There is no quota system imple-mented at any of our re-registration points.Should there be a high influx at a particularpoint, Sassa requests CPS to shift equipmentfromotherareas tomanage the influx. Shouldthe situation however arise that beneficiar-ies cannot be served at a particular hall orvenue due to large numbers, Sassa will thenarrange with these beneficiaries to comeback to the site the next day for assistance.”She says this is however the last resort as

“should team leaders run short of cards, addi-tional stock is dispatched to sites as re-quired.”

Bennett says it is unfair to expectpensioners to unnecessarily forkout travel fare. “We cannot afford tocommute every day and be giventhe run-around because Sassa andCPS cannot accommodate us. Theworst part is that nobody can giveyou a proper answer as to when there-registration will eventually hap-pen,” Bennett fumes. He says he tried on several occa-

sions to call Sassa on the two toll-free numbers listed in his letter. However, both lines went

straight to a voice-recorded mes-sage.Wahab is unable to explain why

the toll-free numbers had gonestraight to a voice-recorded mes-sage. She says: “Sassa toll-free lineshave been inundated with enquir-ies from the public in respect of re-registration. Based on the high in-flux of calls, dedicated lines for re-registration queries only have beenset up in the Western Cape to en-

sure that all queries are effectively managed.Members of the public can call the followingnumbers for re-registration queries only on0 (021) 469 0206/7 or 0 (021) 469 0235.”Grant beneficiaries who are still uncertain

about when they have to re-register can callthese numbers. Alternatively pensioners cancall Sassa on its toll-freenumber 0 0800 601 011.“We are in the process of setting up an addi-

tional three lines to end up with six in total. All will specifically be mandated to assist cli-ents with queries pertaining to the re-regis-tration process,” Wahab adds. When People’s Post visited the Rocklands

CivicCentre onWednesday, this reporterhadbeen informed that Sassa officials arrivedtwo hours late.

PUPILS and teachers at Woodlands Highfear for their lives every day.

Last year as well as earlier this month, theschool fell prey to apparent gang violence aspupils call on outsiders to help after argu-ments erupt. The fighting, believed to be agang war between the Bad Boys, Irie’s and

Little Gangsters, has gripped the school sinceOctober.Three pupils were stabbed and the princi-

pal, Hennie Petersen, injured after a pupilthrew an ornament at him last year.A Grade 10 pupil was nearly stabbed at the

school last Tuesday after a group of armedmen jumped the school fence. It is understood that the men were search-

ing for a boy they had suspected of verballyabusing their friend. On finding the learnerthey attempted to stab him four times beforefleeing the premises. However, provincial educationdepartment

officials say none of the incidents had beenreported to them. The spokesperson for the provincial educa-

tion department, Bronagh Casey, says: Theschool reported no incidents in 2012.”She says last Tuesday’s incident was also

not reported to Safe Schools.“However, the Safe Schools co-ordinator

will investigate the matter and provide ap-propriate interventions,” she adds.Petersen disputes this, saying he has been

working closely with Safe Schools who hasbeen very helpful in assisting the school.“Safe Schools has been of great help. Every

reported incident was followed up on. Theylast year agreed to employing a securityguard for the last sixweeks of the school year.

However, that budget has since dried up andwe no longer have a security guard on duty,”the principal explains.Community worker Maria Dankers, who

lives around the corner from the school, sayspupils’ parents and residents need to assistthe school to ensure the safety of the learners.“My three children all went to Woodlands

High and have sincemade something of theirlives. Parents need to do their bit and startpatrols at the school to deter outsiders fromthreatening learners with weapons duringand after school,” she says.Shariefa Rasdien, the mother of a Grade 9

pupil, says she is more than willing to offerup her time to do patrols at the school.“I’m at home and can sit all day at the

school to patrol, but I can’t do it alone. Moreparents need to help,”she says. The principal says parents play an impor-

tant role in addressing the problem.Petersen says parents only exacerbate the

problem by believing that their children dono wrong.“Parents need to accept that their children

are doing wrong and that they must not en-courage the learners to fight against each oth-er,” he says. There is little the school staff can do if the

parents don’t take responsibility for theirchildren’s actions, Petersen continues.

“Discipline starts at home.We cannot effec-tively go on with teaching and learning if westill have to concentrate largely on disciplin-ing our students who often come to schoolwith knives,” Petersen explains. With 34 years’ teaching experience at

Woodlands High, Petersen says the fightingonly surfaced last year. “Many of our learn-ers come to schoolwith kniveswhich are con-fiscated at the gate.”A group of pupils were caught in the act on

Thursday, with a bottle of whiskey in hand.Petersen says: “Parents don’t expect their

children to come home drunk after a day atschool. Parents need to teach their childrenabout self-respect.”Anurgentmeetingwill beheldat the school

on Tuesday evening at 18:30 for all parents.Petersen says he hopes parents will attend

so that a plan of action can be set in motion.

LAND being used for illegal dumpingcould soonbe transformed into a lush gar-den.

A group of residents from Beacon Valleysay they are tired of having to clean up themess when the land in Hengelaar Street hasthe potential to be something beautiful andbeneficial to the community.

MogamatYusufButler (43) sayshehasbeendigging into his own pocket to clean up themess left by people from and around Mitch-ell’s Plain.

“We as the communitymust take the initia-tive to improve our living conditions. No oneis going to do it for us. I worked at a nurseryfor 27 years andhave experiencewith garden-ing andplants. All I need is for ourward coun-cillor to assist inprovidinguswith theplants, compost and some paint so that we can fix upthe place,” he explains.

Ward councillor Eddie Andrews confirmedthat the land has been zoned as a public openspace and is due for an upgrade.

Andrews says it is disappointing when oth-er residents trash the place at the inconven-ience of their neighbours.

“The City’s intended use for our Parks andPublicOpenSpaces are for recreational activ-ities and it is disappointing to see the resi-dents themselves dumping their domesticwaste and building rubble in our parks. If res-idents don’t have a dustbin they must pleasecontact the Solid Waste department. Takepride and ownership in your community byreporting dumping and partnering with theCity of Cape Town to ensure our parks ourwell kept,”he says.

Gasnat Samuels (44) says illegal dumpinghas been a problem even before she movedinto the area eight years ago.

“People who live down the road from thefield dump here too. They come with their

bins and then dump their rubbish at the backofmyhouse. There aremice and rats runningaround because of the dirt. A bakkie evencame to dump here one morning at about02:00.

“My house faces the field and sometimesthe youngsters set the dirt alight with no re-gard for my property,” she seethes.

Butler believes there is hope to beautify thearea and to force people dumping illegally touse the nearby waste drop-off facility onSpine Road.

“The council comes and cleans up the area, but that’s a temporary solution. We need totransform the area into a garden to perma-nently deter people from using the land as adump site,” says Butler.

“Children want to use the field to play soc-cer, but they can’t because the public openspace is infested with rats because of thedumping.”

Andrews sayshe iswilling toworkwith thecommunity to address the problem.

“The intention is to upgrade the park simi-

larly to theparkon the corners of Jukskei andHengelaar streets which was also a dumpinghotspot. The upgrade and community partici-pation and involvement there has successful-ly deterred dumping. I would welcome resi-dents to contact me if they are available toassist,” he says.

Andrews welcomed the residents’ plansand requested they call him to pledge theircommitment to upgrading the area.

Samuels says she is more than willing tohelp start a garden on the field if it will bringan end to the dumping.

However, she says the City of Cape Townneeds to come to the party.

“We are prepared to work in our communi-ty, but need the City to assist us by giving usplants and tools.”

Chris Christians (60) lives adjacent to thefield where the illegal dumping is takingplace.

The soccer enthusiast believes a part of thevacant land can be used for a soccer pitch.

“There are no recreational facilities for thechildren in Beacon Valley. We used to holdsocial soccer tournaments on this field, butcan no longer do so because of the dumping,”he says.

WHAT AWHAT A MESS:MESS: Residents living adjacent to a field off Hengelaar Street, Beacon Valley say they are fed up with with the City of Cape Townfor failing to assist them in turning a dump site into a userfriendly garden. Photo: Laila Majiet

MITCHELL’S Plain Police has anew officer in charge.

A new acting station commanderwill start at the station next monthfollowing the temporary appoint-ment of Brigadier Johan Brand asthe cluster commander for Mitch-ell’s Plain.

Colonel Cass Goolam, who haspreviously stationed in Steenberg,

will start active duty on 1 Februaryas the new station commander.

Major General Jeremy Vearey, who had been transferred to Philip-pi from Mitchell’s Plain last year, has since taken up a role at provin-cial level.

Goolam previously worked in theMitchell’s Plain cluster as the co-or-dinator for visible policing.

He was temporarily appointed atthe Steenberg Police Station as theStation Commander last year be-cause of his vast experience ingang-infested areas.

Brand has acted in the position ofthe Cluster Commander at Mitch-ell’s Plain since January last year

and has also performed duties asthe Station Commander at Mitch-ell’s Plain.

“This was manageable as thecluster only consists of Mitchell’sPlain and Strandfontein police sta-tions,” he says.

“However, with Lentegeur PoliceStation opening in April, it will bequite difficult to manage the clusterand the largest police station in thecountry. As a result, Colonel Gool-am will be acting as the new stationcommander at Mitchell’s PlainSAPS.”

Goolam says he is looking for-ward to returning to Mitchell’sPlain.

“I will be the acting station com-mander for a while and while I amsad to be leaving the people of Steen-berg, I look forward to the challeng-es that await me.

“Mitchell’s Plain is one of the big-gest police stations in the provinceand that comes with a large volumeof personnel, a diverse communityand high crime rates,” Goolamsays.

However, he believes the openingof the new Lenteguer Police Stationwill alleviate some of the pressureon Mitchell’s Plain Police Station.

Brand says that his “promotion”to Cluster Commander is only tem-porary until Vearey returns from

the provincial project he is current-ly working on.

“It will therefore allow me to re-main on the ground with my col-leagues and to ensure that servicedelivery is constantly improving tothe community of Mitchell’s Plain,”he says.

“Unfortunately, I will never beable to distance myself from the sta-tion or the community of Mitchell’sPlain as I will eventually return tothe position of Station Commander.I will however miss the daily inter-action with the residents, might itbe in the form of a complaint or, atleast most of the time, a quick con-versation or a compliment.”

STRANDFONTEIN residents are gnash-ing their teeth in frustration as a demol-ished building in Church Street is attract-ing illegal dumpers.

The demolished building is next to the OKMini Mart. The building was a cinema buthas been vacant for a number of years.Bricks, papers, packets and broken fencing

are strewn across the site where the emptybuilding once stood. The owner of the convenience store, Andre

Laubscher, admits the area is an eyesore. He however says there is a delay in the re-

moval of the rubble and dirt.Laubscher says he has plans to expand the

store and the rubble is to be used in the con-struction.The Proudly Strandfontein Facebook page

has been flooded with residents’ complaintsabout the site being an eyesore. The community feels the undeveloped area

has potential to be built into a much neededshopping hub.Michelle September (43) has been living in

Strandfontein for 15 years and says the loca-tion is ideal for a supermarket.“I only visit the OK there if I really need

to. Theplace is a complete eyesore and is situ-ated onamain road. Theway it looks, Iwouldassume that it could pose as a health and en-vironmental hazard too,” she says.Laubscher says the store will be extended

and be four times bigger than it is at the mo-ment.He says agreendesignwill be implemented

into the development.“We are going very green and that is why

the old building was demolished. We wantthe store to have eco-friendly elements. Weare just waiting for the city council to ap-prove ourplan. I amhoping thatwe canbeginbuilding in March,” he says. However, residents question the “green de-

sign” given the unsightly dump which hasbeen left next to theOKMiniMart for severalmonths.September demands the property owner

clear the land.“The property owners should at least clean

up the mess,” she seethes.Laubscher has committed to having the pa-

pers removed during the course of the week. However, the rest of the bricks and fencing

will remain until a later stage, whenwork be-gins on the site.Ward councillor Irma Jackson says she is

aware of the upgrading of the building.

“I visited the area last weekwhen someonealluded to fact that the sight is an eyesore, butwhen I explained that the private owner is up-grading the area, it was said that they areokay with it,” she explains. The chairperson of the Strandfontein East

Ratepayers’ Association, Mario Oostendurp, says the site should be fenced off to deter peo-ple from using the property adjacent to theOK Mini Mart as an illegal dumping site.He directs most of his outrage towards the

owner of the property.“My concern is for the safety of residents.

Children currently use the site as a BMXtrack and skatepark,” he explains.Oostendurp urges Laubscher to at least

fence off the site.“We urge the owner to fence off the site as

soon as possible before someone is injured,”Oostendurp adds. The building off Church Street was demol-

ished nearly a year ago.

A PILOT project to combat crime will belaunched in New Woodlands this week.

The “Whistle Campaign” will be rolled outin three streets in the area on 1 February.Alexis Preller, Heinrich Piering and Strad-

cladott streets will be part of the initiative. The three-month project was set in motion

by theLentegeurWest/NewWoodlandsCom-munity Police subforum chairperson, BasilCoetzee. He presented the proposal to the communi-

ty, who welcomed the initiative. Each house-hold will be able to purchase a whistle whichthey should use in an emergency only.“Wewant people to use thewhistles to alert

their neighbours about intruders,” Coetzeeexplains. He says the initiative gained momentum

after a surge in armed robberies in the area.Gun-toting thieves are robbing people, es-

pecially women, who use the bus stop on Ei-sleben Road early in the morning.Women have been urged to remain extra

vigilant and walk in groups when travellingto the bus stop. It is understood that the rob-bers are wearing hoodies and peak caps tohide their identity. However, police could not confirm an in-

crease in robberies in this vicinity.Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Con-

stable JeromeVoegturges residents to reportcrime to the police.Anyonewith information about any illegal

activities can also contact Warrant OfficerMarius Pieterse on0 079 894 1684 or the sec-tor vehicle on 0 082 522 0724.Coetzee says the robbers are working in

pairs and are believed to be fromHeinz Park,Philippi or The Leagues.“We have seen them running in that direc-

tion after mugging people. The unidentifiedsuspects wait at the bus stop for unassumingcommuters,” Coetzee says.Robert Plaatjies (23)was robbed of two cell-

phones earlier this month while walking tothe bus stop one morning. His sister, NewWoodlands residentHanifa

Maggerman Smith, says while the whistlecampaign is welcomed, she is not sure it willhelp aspeoplehave long forgottenabout look-ing out for their neighbour. “It is a good initi-ative, but as things are, I am not certain itis going to help. Neighbours no longer lookout for each other. We need increased policevisibility, especially in the evening,” shesays. The 40-year-old New Woodlands resi-dent saysherbrotherhadbeenwalkingalonewhen he noticed a man following him.“He saw a guy in a hoodie. He then moved

around to a busier section of the road to goback home, but noticed that he was being fol-lowed. He ran towards the house and as hetook a corner another guy with a gun waswaiting for him and robbed him of his cell-phone at gunpoint,” she explains.Coetzee advises: “Be aware of who is

around you. If someone looks suspicious ormakes you feel uneasy, avoid that person.Use the buddy system and walk with friendsor in a group when walking to train stations, bus stops or transport interchanges.”The public have also been warned to not

use their cellphone while walking to andfrom public transport hubs.

AGROUP of teenagersmay soon real-ise their American dream.

Six teenagers from the Western Capehave been chosen for the American FieldServices exchange programme.

Four of the six pupils are from SpineRoad High.

The other two learners are from Set-tlers High and Somerset High in thenorthern suburbs.

American Field Services IntercultureSouth Africa was formed in 1958 and isa volunteer, non-profit organisation thatpromotes and facilitates interculturallearning and awareness through ex-change programmes and other learningactivities.

South African learners get the oppor-tunity to live in a foreign country andlearn about new culture, and possibly anew language.

This year, learners went through agruelling interview process and had tohave an aggregate of 75% or above toqualify to apply.

Pupils had to fill in an application formand go through a number of interviewsbefore being selected.

Naadirah Titus (15), Angelica Septem-ber (14), Mishka Sarels (14) and ZaheerAbrahams (15) were chosen to go abroadfor a year.

Almost 20 pupils from Spine RoadHigh applied.

American Field Services regional co-ordinator, Lindie Filander, says Muslimchildren from disadvantaged communi-ties are given preference.

Augie Filander, the chapter chair ofAmerican Field Services for Mandalay, says the criteria are determined by theAmerican government. “After the 9/11terrorist attacks it was always seen as awar between the Muslims and Ameri-cans. This programme aims to banishthat stigma,” Augie explains.

The children will be going to Americafor a year on a free scholarship and willbe hosted by an American family.

Learners will be hosted in differentparts of America and will not likely beattending the same school.

Spine Road High’s deputy principal,Rehana Harnekar, congratulated the pu-pils on being chosen by the AmericanField Services’ national office to go onthe exchange.

Sarels, a Tafelsig resident, says this isan opportunity which she plans on mak-ing the most of. “We applied not knowingwhat to expect. Everyone always tells usthat we are worth nothing because wecome from Mitchell’s Plain. I plan onshowing everyone who thought nothingof us that we can make a success,” she

says. The 14-year-old says she plans onexploring the Americans’ love for fastfoods while there.

Abrahams, who is from Strandfontein, says he is looking forward to learningmore about the American culture, its tra-ditions and the local cuisine.

September says her mother wasthrilled at the news of her being chosenfor the exchange programme.

“My mommy was so happy and excitedthat she was screaming when we foundout that we had been accepted to go toAmerica. I am grateful for this chance asnot many children get opportunities likethis presented to them,” the Rocklands

teenager says.Titus, who is also from Rocklands, says

the interview process was very challeng-ing as they were expected to prepare fora series of interviews.

“We had to write essays and preparefor oral interviews. We did not knowwhat to expect,” she explains.

The pupils were asked about how theywould feel if they were to be hosted bya single-parent household or a gay cou-ple. The teenagers are awaiting final con-firmation of their trip from the Ameri-can offices.

They are expected to leave for Americaaround June.

Singing songs of remembrance and hon-ouring their parents the way the prophet didwas the order of the day. The learners’ voicesresonated through the prayer facility, touch-ing the hearts of all the parents present.

Principal Nazrina Teladia opened the pro-gramme with words of wisdom on the roleiconic prophets have played in the academicfield.

LUZUKO ZINI

A YOUNG graduate is calling out onother graduates to “give back” to thecommunity of Mitchell’s Plain.

Jaymion Hendricks (24) from Rocklandshopes to get together with other youngprofessionals from the area to help edu-cate the youth.

“I want to mentor young pupils by hav-ing motivational talks and workshopswhere we teach them how to cope withtheir studies. I hope by doing this,I can in-spire pupils to work hard and grab oppor-tunities that will change their lives,” hesays.

Hendricks went to Caradale PrimarySchool and received a scholarship to at-tend the German International School inCape Town.

He has a degree in International Rela-tions from Stellenbosch University andlast year he completed his law degree, alsoat Stellenbosch University.

Hendricks recently left Cape Town andnow lives in Johannesburg where he isworking as a candidate attorney at one ofAfrica’s largest law firms, Edward NathanSonnenbergs.

“I’m one the fortunate people to get agood education and I want to give back bysharing my knowledge,” he says.

“This is an opportunity to all those grad-uates who come from Mitchell’s Plain tomake a difference in our communities. Itstarts with themselves making an effort tochange things.

“It’s time that we as the people of Mitch-ell’s Plain stand together and give theyouth a platform to achieve great things.”

Hendricks believes education is the

most important tool in order to changeone’s life.

“We want to highlight the importance ofeducation. The only way better your situa-tion is becoming educated,” he says.

“Everyone deserves a chance to be edu-cated irrespective of where they comefrom.”

Principals at two of Mitchell’s Plainhigh schools say they would welcome Hen-dricks initiative.

Owen Bridgens, principal at MondaleHigh, believeswhatHendricks is planning“will have a huge impact on the pupils”.

“If he does that for the greater Mitchell’sPlain community, itwould be great for ourpupils because the pupils will have a per-son to look up to and aspire to be likethem,” he says.

David Charles, the principal at CedarHigh, shares the same sentiments.

“Within theareaswework in, ourpupilsneed encouragement and motivation. When it comes from someone other thantheir teachers, they will buy into it,” hesays.

“It would give our pupils, especiallyGrade 12s, a wider perspective of what isout there and what they can look forwardto.”

Hendricks believes the youth have po-tential to accomplish great things in life.

“This is a call to all those who want tosee the youth succeed to take part in mak-ing a difference. It’s time that we take ac-tion, so that any child from our area cando positive things and inspire others,” hesays.

Anyone interested in helping Hendricksgive back can phone him on 0 078 510 4605or email 2 [email protected]

VIOLENT protests over service deliveryhave in recent months marred the politi-cal landscape.

People’s Post interns Tarren-Lee Habel-gaarn and Luzuko Zini took to the streets andasked readers if the violence is justified or itis a sign of desperation.

PeacePeace vsvsprotestsprotests

ONON POINT:POINT: Steve Fraser says while he doesn’tcondone violence, when people are hopelessthey get desperate. “If they can’t get their pointacross what other option do they have? Something needs to be done, but it all boils down toeducation of what is right and wrong.”

UNAUNACCEPTCCEPTABLE:ABLE: Stirling DamainHarris saysviolence is never justified. He feels people protest when they’ve lost patience. At that point,he says, there is no other way but violence. “Ifeel particularly sorry for the farmworkerswhowork in rain and sun, but get R50.”

NO VIOLENCE:NO VIOLENCE: Thelma Harris says violence isparticularly frustrating when protesters don’tthink of the inconvenience caused to others.“If you take the farm workers: when they goback to work the property is broken. It’s unfairtowards themselves and the farmers.”

ELECTELECT LEADERS:LEADERS: Taariq Samuels says: “That’stheir way of getting what they want, but it doesnot always go their way. Protesters shouldelect someone to speak on their behalf to thepeople, company or government they have issues with so that things can be resolved.”

NOTNOT IDEAL:IDEAL: KayLeigh Meistre believes protesting is a way for protesters to get attention, but believes violence is not the way. “Protesters need to speak up and voice their concernsinstead of being violent. Violence has neversolved anything but only makes things worse.”

UNJUST:UNJUST: Andiswa Sam says violence is not theway as it only makes things worse. “Violenceis not a sign of desperation, but an opportunity(for some people) to ruin what has alreadybeen done for them. The only way to go forwardis to address their issues in a civilised way.”

OTHEROTHER MEANS:MEANS: Zach Simpson believes thereare other ways of dealing with the protesters’concerns. “The violence may be a sign of desperation, but there is no need for it. They shoulduse peaceful methods of protest that haveserved this and other countries well.”

A COLOURFUL makeover of a park inWestridge has been completed.

Graffiti artist Falko has kept graffiti aliveover the years andMitchell’s Plain residentscan now enjoy hismurals while sitting in thepublic open space. The vibrant square on Park Avenue and

Lariat Close has been given a complete over-haul with brightly colouredmurals grabbingthe attention of pedestrians.Born and raised in Mitchell’s Plain, Falko

was the first artist to which the City of CapeTown issued its Graffiti Art Permit late lastyear.People’s Post previously reported that the

graffiti bylaw states that graffiti artists needthe permission of the property owner and thepeople living in the vicinity before starting aproject (“Drawing a more colourful future”,11 December). Falko returned to his home-town in December and painted several mu-rals in Park Avenue, Westridge. This project, called Mirror on the Wall 3,

started two years ago on a smallholding inPhilippi.Mirror on the Wall 3 is composed ofsix murals and will also be done on Park Ave-nue.Residents in the nearby vicinity have wel-

comed the bright artworks.Aslam Philander who lives in the house on

which the first mural in this series was paint-ed says: “It makes the park look nice and issomething nice for our area.”

HARSH penalties for drug-related crimesdo more harm than good.

This is according to Shaun Shelly, the Ad-dictions ProgrammeManager of Hope HouseCounselling Centre, which caters for addictsfrom across the city. The criminal sanctions for drug addicts are

praised, encouraging harsher penalties, hesays.“Even the recent special remissions of sen-

tences, granted by the president, have exclud-ed those convicted of drug-related crimes. Al-though this is a popular opinion, I suggestthat this approach is ill-informed and nothelpful if we are to make in-roads in dealingwith the drug problem. We need to base ourapproach on sound research and not on popu-lar sentiment.”Besides one-to-one counselling, the Hope

House Counselling Centre offers group thera-py sessions for recovering drug users and ad-dicts over 18 years.Shelly and Peter Cilliers are counselling 15

people a session and anyone is welcome tojoin, provided they phone Julie MacDonnellon (021) 701 9742.Shelly hopes to provide a similar pro-

gramme for 13- to 18-year-olds in the near fu-ture.Cilliers grew up in Mitchell’s Plain where

he witnessed addiction and decided he want-ed to make a difference. “I came from a safe, secure home and wanted to help others whowere not so fortunate.”He worked with recovering drug users and

addicts in Westlake before moving to Mili-tary Road, Retreat.Hope House is looking for people who are

interested in training to do counselling.Shelly says it is important to make a dis-

tinction between addicts and casual drug us-ers. “An addict’s whole life revolves aroundthegettingorusingdrugsandcannot say ‘no’.There is significant research proving thatchronic drug use brings about fundamentalneurological changes thatmove a susceptibleindividual from drug user to addict.”

Shelly works with addicts daily. “Addic-tion is very seldomsomething entered into by‘free choice’. It is a chronic, relapsing diseasewhich, like many brain diseases, has behav-ioural and socio-spiritual aspects. Once weunderstand this, we can accept that a bio-psy-cho-social approach is required to treat ad-diction. Drug addicts need treatment for themedical disorder from which they suffer,(and) not time in jail which will only teachthem how to become better criminals.”He says many recovering addicts have bat-

tled hard to overcome their addictions, arewell into recovery, and could become produc-tive members of the community and rolemodels for others. Unfortunately, many can-not find employment because of criminalrecords for minor possession charges.“Our youth, our children, have very real

problems when dealing with the consequenc-es of addiction. By treating them as crimi-nals, instead of providing real opportunitiesfor recovery and by sabotaging their futurewith criminal records, we are ensuring the

cycle is not broken. To incarcerate someonewho has been caught for possession of an ille-gal substance, throw them into jailwith hard-ened criminals and leave them with a crimi-nal record against their name is not justice.”

HUNDREDS of people are gearing up forthe Cancer Association of South Africa(CANSA) Relay For Life in Mitchell’sPlain.

The overnight relay is a unique fundrais-ing event that allows participants to join to-gether to fight cancer.

René Petersen from CANSA says the relayis a reminder to the families and friends ofcancer patients and cancer survivors that thefight against the disease is ongoing.

Many of the participants are people whohave been diagnosed with cancer or knowpeople who have survived the illness.

Teams are made up of 10 to 15 people, eachtaking a turn to walk around the field at 30-minute or hourly intervals.

Over 30 teams have already entered for theovernight relay happening on 23 February atthe Stephen Reagan Sports Complex.

Team entry costs R650 for 10 people and allproceeds go towards fighting the battle withcancer.

“We have an overnight relay to show oursupport for cancer patients who battle the ill-ness every hour of every day,” Petersen says.

Candles will be lit at sunset in honour of allthose who have died of the disease.

The highlight of the evening is the Lumi-naria Ceremony, held after dark to honourcancer survivors and to remember those whohave lost the battle against cancer. Lanternsline the track and are left burning throughoutthe night to remind participants of the incred-ible importance of their contributions.

Families and friends will be able to light acandle in remembrance of their loved ones.

Petersen says people don’t often talk openly

about cancer.“People don’t talk about the ‘C word’ be-

cause they believe it is a death sentence. Liv-ing a healthy life is key tomaintaining a goodlifestyle even after being diagnosed with can-cer,” Petersen adds.

On the night, the CANSA Relay For Lifeopens as cancer survivors make their wayaround the first lap.

Petersen says the event is festive with liveentertainment keeping the participants andcrowd going.

Entertainment chairperson for the event,Darryl Nel, says a number of local performershave volunteered their time to perform at theevent. This includes Soul Sundae, solo singerSaalim Ismail, Von D, Afikaans Ruk and JeanCarlo.

Teams of enthusiastic citizens will gatherat the Stephen Reagan Sports Complex from18:00 on 23 February until 06:00 on 24 Febru-ary.

IF you’re feeling lost and think thereis no help for you, think again. Helpis at hand.

The Revival Centre in New Woodlandswill be offering free counselling as ofnext month.

Pastor Chris Sloster says people fromall faiths and church allegiances are wel-come to access the counselling services.

The counselling offered focuses ondrug counselling, family counsellingand career counselling.

Sloster says people often don’t knowwhere to go for help.

“We wish to also act as a referral serv-ice and direct people to the organisa-tions that can assist them with the prob-lems they may be facing.”

The pastor believes community inte-gration has fallen by the wayside.

“A major reason for our community’sdisintegration is ignorance. Some peo-ple are not aware of the services and re-

sources available to them for guidanceand counselling. We want to be a catalystfor positive change in this community,”he adds.

Subcouncil 23 chairperson, NatalieBent, welcomed the initiative andpraised the community structure for giv-ing back to the community.

“I believe that churches and commu-nity organisations can most definitelyoffer assistance to those individuals suf-fering from drug addition.

“Due to drug activities and alcoholismbeing rife in Mitchell’s Plain, I can onlybut welcome any additional support of-fered to our broader community,” shesays.

The counselling services will belaunched on Tuesday 5 February at theRevival Centre on the corner of HansAschenborn and Maggie Laubser roads.

There will be four counsellors on dutyevery Tuesday from 9:30 to 12:30.

For further details call the RevivalCentre on 0 (021) 370 0156 between 8:30and 14:30.

Help is at hand

THOUSANDS of students enter privatetertiary education institutions everyyear – increasingly out of choice, but oth-er times because of limited opportunitiesin the public sector.

As prospective students have alwaysdone when deciding on which universityto attend, private students must be en-couraged to similarly ensure they en-trust the right institution with theirhigher education.

With an estimated 110 000 students reg-istered in private higher education annu-ally, leaving these students without guid-ance on how to choose quality coursesand institutions exacts a significant butrarely recognised toll on the individual, the community and ultimately the coun-try and economy, an education expertwarns.

“Many students would already havebeen exposed to valuable guidance onhow to ensure that an institution is regis-tered and its qualifications are accredit-ed, to avoid becoming a victim of unscru-pulous operators,” says Dr FelicityCoughlan, the director of the Independ-ent Institute of Education, which is re-sponsible for the academic leadershipand governance of education and train-ing on more than 20 registered higher ed-ucation campuses in SA which collec-tively welcome more than 5 000 new stu-dents annually.

But Dr Coughlan notes that once thisfirst safety hurdle has been successfullynavigated, prospective students mustturn to understanding what would repre-sent a high quality learning experience.

“That will guide you as to what qualityindicators you should be looking for,”she says.

“Of course, no institution will adver-tise itself as being of low quality and vir-tually none will define what quality

means to them, so it is up to you to beclear about what you need and want andthen look for those attributes in a col-lege.”

Dr Coughlan advises:•It is important to look at a total quality

experience assessment – from the condi-tion of the campus to the “intangibles”such as the values and interpersonalskills you will gain from the experience.

•One must also consider the output –such as graduation rates; quality ofteaching; nature of facilities and numberof lectures and learning materials youget in relation to the input: fees, time andeffort.

•A further assessment should be doneof the “value-add” to determine what youwould gain from the higher education ex-perience beyond the actual qualification. The “product” you leave with is a qualifi-cation, but you also should expect to bebetter equipped with work-related skillsand improved interpersonal abilities anda strong sense of citizenship. There maybe other things of value that you seekfrom a qualification and you should askabout these things.

“When considering colleges, it is inyour best interest to do thorough re-search online and offline, looking at aninstitution’s official website and materi-als, but also at what others have writtenabout the campus,” says Coughlan.

“You should ask the basic regulatoryand quality questions, but then youshould begin to explore what is really of-fered. Ask the person interviewing youto tell you why you should choose theircampus, and listen carefully for messag-es that focus only on “product” or almostexclusively on the student life experi-ence.

“Either extreme may be a reason to becautious,” Coughlan says.

WHEN did you last put pen to paper to writea real love letter? With the advance of tech-nology, so-called snail mail has become anostalgic past-time.The SA Post Office is encouraging roman-

tic South Africans to use the postal servicefor Valentine’s Day.“A card or letter for Valentine’s Day is the

best possible gift for a loved one some dis-tance away,” says Janras Kotsi, head of MailBusiness at the SA Post Office. “A letter orcard sent by a loved one must be one of thebest surprises anyone can get.”He says a letter bearing a stamp has a 50%

bigger chance of being opened first – or atall – than one without a stamp. The reasonis that it is perceived a person took time andeffort to sit down and write it.Kotsi says a card or letter is easy to keep

and will not be deleted or lost when a phoneis upgraded or a hard drive crashes. “It willoutlast flowers, it takes up very little storage

space and when you reread it years later, itwill evoke more memories than any otherkeepsake.”He adds that mail is more romantic than

social media because you can neither sprayitwith aftershave or perfumenor kiss itwithlipstick.Kotsi also points out that a letter makes a

particularly affordable gift for Valentine’sDay.“A standard letter costs only R2,65 in post-

age, but it remains appropriate for Valen-tine’s Day which focuses on emotion andfeeling, not financial value. Customersshould make sure they use the right addressand postcode, which can be looked up onlineat www.postoffice.co.za.“Remember, we can create personal mem-

ories, strengthen existing relations and evencreate new relationships by sending some-one a personalised card or message for Val-entine’s Day.”

You are what you eat.For years people have been obsessed

with phrases such as “healthy body, healthymind”, and it’s true, says a die-titian.What children eat have a major im-

pact on their brain. “Your brain is de-pendent on a normal blood sugar level,so any people or children with low orhigh blood sugar cannot concentrateproperly. Therefore it is of utmost im-portance to eat regularly to help keepyour blood sugar at a normal level,”says dietitian Magdalene Pieters. And, says Pieters, you don’t need ex-

pensive or exclusive foods to achievethis. A healthy combination of foodgroups in either a meal or snack willsuffice.Brain boosting foods do not have to

burn a hole in your pocket, but, moreimportantly, she says, the best thing todo is to avoid foods that affect the brainnegatively. Focus instead on foods thatare beneficial to the brain.“It has nothing to dowith affordabil-

ity and more to do with trying to eatnatural foods, thewaynature intendedus to eat,” she says. When looking at food you need to de-

cide if it is natural, wholesome andhealthy or if it is only the nice tastingpart of a natural food like sugar, oil, fat, cream and white refined starch.A good guideline is to try and avoid

foods that are dyed, changed or fried.Certain foods, such as fried foods,

sweets, sugar and sweetenedcooldrinks, have a negative impact onthe brain. “Bought fried fast foods aretheworst because the oilmight be boil-ing for many hours. Trans fats replacethe good essential Omega-3 fats in thebrain, andmay causeAttentionDeficitDisorder and mood disorders like de-pression because of a lack of Omega-3fatty acids,” says Pieters.“Fried fast foods are one of the rea-

sons so many young people feel de-pressed these days.”Sugar is digested very quickly and

spikes blood sugar levels.According toPieters, a lot of insulin must be secret-ed to lower the blood sugar again.

“A childwith a high blood sugarwillnot feel full of energy, like most peoplethink. They will feel drowsy and tired. If their sugar drops too low after thespike they will feel nervous, edgy andjittery. They won’t be able to sit still, can’t concentrate and everythingaround them will draw their attentionaway from their work,” she says.Water with a meal that combines

protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals andhealthy fat is very good at empoweringthe brain.Pieters says children should be en-

couraged to drink water wheneverthey feel thirsty or hungry.“A dehydrated body and brain can-

not function properly and sometimeschildren get overweight because theyconfuse thirst with hunger and eat toomuch,” she says. With the new school year having

just started, a good eating habit couldhelp improve a child’s performance.Pieters says good foods to include in

your child’s lunch box are low GIbread (which decreases the sugarspike), and a protein that suits yourpocket such as meat, cheese, peanutbutter or egg and a fruit.“Apples are low GI fruits and travel

well. Buy different types and colours,”says Pieters.Breakfast is also very important to

kickstart a day, says Pieters. She listslowGI toast, egg, peanut butter, lowGIoats or muesli, yoghurt and a fruit orfew raisins as good breakfast choicesfor children. She adds that pilchards are excellent

food.“It is packed with good Omega-3 fat-

ty acids, is an excellent source of pro-tein andminerals from the sea and cal-cium from the soft bones in the fish. The tomato added to most tins is alsovery good, filled with anti-oxidantsthat protect against many diseases,”says Pieters. She highlights that it is also afforda-

ble and you can stock up and keepsome.“I combine it with wholewheat pas-

ta, onions and spices, then add a thinlayer of grated cheese on top for a love-ly fast dish for the family,” she adds.

Catch-22CIVIL society places certain expectations up-on a country’s legal system. So it is expected, for instance, that people

whom the courts find guilty end up in prison. There, it is hoped, offenders will serve the

required time for having been found guilty ofwhichever crime.Perhaps it is also hoped that they would

make amends and perhaps become reconcili-atory towards those whom they’ve offended. Many prisoners say they’ve found religionwhile in prison. If prison is hoped to be a cor-rective facility, what then can be said forcrimes taking place in prison?Fightswhichbrokeout inPollsmoorPrison

last week are reportedly as a result of at-tempts to control illegal itemswhichwere be-ing smuggled into the facility.A daily newspaper report indicates 10 in-

mateswere injured in two separate battles be-tween rival gangs. Five inmates were takento hospitals. The items in question are drugsand cellphones. While people on the “outside”may take cellphones for granted, drugs in aprison is understandably a dangerous combi-nation. Correctional Services regional com-missioner Delekile Klaas has reportedly toldthe media they were investigating whetherofficials could be working with inmates. Two rival gangs have are said to have been

separated, while gang leaders have been iden-tified and placed in another area. Many questions can be asked as to whether

prisons really serve a purpose. But in the ab-sence of any other recourse, correctional fa-cilities remain the only answer as to what todo with offenders and those who break thelaw. Research indicates many offenders, un-fortunately, return to prison. Some, becausethey see little way out than to survive by com-mitting crime. Others because their attemptsat reintegration into society are foiled as a re-sult of the mark against their name.Until we’ve walked a mile in a prisoner’s

shoes, who is to know? Perhaps crime neversleeps. Not even in prison.

What did we do differently? We had good union leaders who al-ways thought of the workers first.(There were) good and successfulnegotiations that never tarnishedthe relationship (between) shopstewards and the union, employersand employees. This strike action could turn out

to be successful, but the damagedone to the economy is irreversible.I blame the union who, togetherwith the farmworker leaders, ill ad-vised their members.Union leaders should have made

their intentions known before en-gaging in illegal industrial action.Theworkers could be out of pock-

et for a long timeuntil – and if – theydo come to an agreement on a wagesettlement backdated to the firstday of absence. The saddest part is that union

leaders never suffer loss of pay inany strike. I am not saying not tostrike, but that should be the last re-sort if negotiations fail and amica-ble solutions cannot remedy theproblem.ARTHUR PILLAY

Call for help is quietenedI’MSHOCKEDbecause today I sawone of theFNB adverts under the heading “You canhelp”.In it, KellyBaloyi, a 17-year-old fromSowe-

to, eloquently pinpoints not only the issuesfacing ournation, but also her idea for a solu-tion.She is not calling for student boycotts, pro-

test marches or strikes. She’s not calling for burning of municipal

buildings, looting of shops or destruction ofschools. She’s not calling for barricadingroads, burning tyres or the stoning of the po-lice.She’s not singing songs that call for a ma-chine gun or the destruction of white farm-ers. She is simply asking for people to helpeach other. She says: “When you help someone, you

lift them up.When you lift them up, they can

help other people, too.”So why am I shocked? I am shocked be-

cause FNB has bowed to pressure from theANC and the SACP and has now withdrawnthe advert. These two political parties be-lieve that this advert amounts to treason andundermines the government. This approachis reminiscent of the past apartheid govern-ment’s approach to those who opposed theirviews. No doubt FNB has realised that it needs to

heed (president) Jacob Zuma’s call, where hestated: “Business that support the ANC willprosper.”Perhaps they should rather look at some

of the statementsmade by (former president)NelsonMandela, who said: “Youwill achievemore in this world through acts of mercythan you will through acts of retribution.”ROGER WOOD

Winning weekendfor SA hockeyJONATHAN COOK

SOUTH AFRICAN women’s hockey stal-ward Pietie Coetzee scored two goals tohelp Investec South Africa to a 2-0 winover Austria in their final World Leagueround twomatch atHartleyvale Stadiumon Sunday.

SA went through to the World Leaguesemi-finals on Saturday when they beat Az-erbaijan 7-0 and Sunday’s match had nobearing on that outcome. However, the host team still played to win

and the result was ensured by two sizzlingdrag-flickpenalty corners fromworld recordgoal scorer Coetzee. The first goal came in the 10thminute after

BernieCoston’s pace down the right won South

Africa their first penalty corner and Coetzeerifled a flat astro-burner into the bottom ofthe backboard.Six minutes later it was Shelley Russell’s

turn to use her pace and stick-ball control athigh speed to outflank her would-be tacklerand set up SA’s second penalty corner.Coetzee aimed for the top shelf this time

and beat Austrian goalkeeper Jasmin An-derle with ease. The double took Coetzee’s international

tally to 258 goals in 258 test matches.Although SA dominated the rest of the

match, further successful strikes didn’t ma-terialise.South Africa’s pace on attack was one of

the most impressive aspects of their play, and forwardsRussell, CostonandSuletteDa-mons were just three of the frontrunnerswho burned their markers away. The second team to qualify for the World

League semi-finals were Belgium, who beatAzerbaijan 1-0 on Sunday.Fixtures for the third round will be an-

nounced when all second round fixtures arecompleted in March. The women in green and gold now focus

their attention on the prestigious InvestecChallenge, which also involves worldnumber one and 2012 Olympic gold medal-lists Holland, as well as England and Aus-tralia.The Investec Challenge kicks-off at Hart-

leyvale on Monday 4 February and culmi-nates in the medal matches on Sunday 10February.

Kicking his way to two medalsLIAM MOSES

A RETREAT karateka returned from Eu-rope and Asia boasting two medals, frominternational tournaments, around hisneck.Byron Wessels (18) has been practising

karate since 2000 and is fast becoming oneof themost accomplished young exponentsin the province.Wessels visited Kazakhstan and India

thismonth, wherehe claimedbronze in theKazakh Kures Traditional Wrestling tour-nament and the Asian Kickboxing Cham-pionships.The Premier College student first took

up the sport to learn self-defence – and thenthe karate bug bit him.“I used to get bullied at primary school,

so I decided to join a karate club,” saysWessels.“I have been training with (my sensei)

for quite a bit now. I (no longer) get bullied, because I am more respected, after (mypeers witnessed) all the things I can do.”The trip to India and Kazakhstan was

Wessels’ first time outside of South Africaand he was accompanied by his sensei.“It is a great achievement. I experienced

lots of things there that I never actually didbefore,” he adds.HoosainNarker,Wessels’ instructor and

grandmaster of theAshiharaKarate Inter-national (AKI), first started karate in 1974and opened his first school six years later. He established AKI in 1998 and the or-

ganisation has since spread the style of ka-rate to 48 different countries.Narker says despite the rapid growth

and international acclaim, he still consid-ers his dojo in Retreat a community organ-isation.“Because of our community involve-

ment we consider ourselves as more thanjust a karate school –we are an educational

institution,” he says.“(Students) need to bringme their school

reports and we actually check whetherthey are doing well. We don’t only want todevelop karate people, but also people whocan be a benefit to their communities.”Narker has been to several countries in

Asia, Europe andSouthAmerica, and trav-elled all across theUSandCanada teachingand competing in martial arts events. He will travel to Thailand to attend the

World Kumite Organisation South EastAsia Cup, along with five students, at theend of the month.AKI will also host teams from 18 other

African nations for the first African Festi-val of Traditional Wrestling and AshiharaKarate at the Western Province SportsSchool in Kuils River fromMonday 25 Feb-ruary to Saturday 2 March.

Six in a row for GlendeneLIAM MOSES

GLENDENE UNITED have emerged asSecond Division title contenders follow-ing an impressive run of victories.

The Athlone club won their sixth consecu-tive game at Vygieskraal on Friday evening, leaving them level on points with log leadersCape Town All Stars and second on the table.

United’s attacking play has been at theheart of their surge up the table and theyhave scored two or more goals in all sevenof their victories this season.

Following Glendene’s 2-1 victory overMitchell’s Plain United this weekend, headcoach Duran Francis said he was pleased tohave so much attacking talent at his dispos-al.

“We are blessed – we normally have fourattacking players with one defender and agoalkeeper on the bench,” said Francis.

“We do not only use (the strategy) at home, but away too. We making use of the attackingplayers in our team and I think that is ouradvantage. We are not really a team who liketo focus on defending.”

Mitchell’s Plain United had the better ofthe opening exchanges on Friday, but thehome side opened the scoring, with the typeof goal which has become a hallmark of theirplay this season.

After they won a free kick on the edge ofthe box, Danian Warley stepped up andcurled the ball over the wall and into the bot-

tom left hand corner, beyond the keeper’sreach.

Glendene started to dominate after takingthe lead and had another chance ten minuteslater, but Moses Fieks fired high after he wasplayed through on goal.

The home side eventually doubled theirtally, in the 45th minute, when towering cen-tre-forward Clinton Emmanuel slipped hismarker at a corner and glanced a header intothe far corner.

The visitors were a much improved side inthe second-half and pulled a goal back afterjust seven minutes, when Tasleem Paulsescored with a free kick that was a carboncopy Warley’s opener.

They almost levelled matters twice fromtwo successive corners in the 11th minute –both of which were taken by Paulse. Glend-ene keeper Marlon Heugh pulled off a full-length save to keep out a shot at the first cor-ner and the post came to Glendene’s rescueat the subsequent set piece.

Paulse was a constant danger throughoutthe second-half, popping up on either flank, playing dangerous balls into the box and har-rying defenders when his team weren’t inpossession.

However, the former Santos midfieldercould not help his side rescue a point andthey suffered their sixth loss of the season.

Mitchell’s Plain will face RC Athletico inLansdowne on Saturday, while Glendenecontinue their title chase in Pinelandsagainst Old Mutual on Saturday.

MISTIMED: RC Athletico player Sibongiseni Godlo is beaten by Regan Rhoda, of Stellenbosch University FC, during a Second Division match atWynbergMilitary Base on Saturday.Athletico, from Lansdowne, won the game 40 and now hold ninth place on the table.
