CLAIMS: RESIDENTS HOLD CITY ACCOUNTABLE
A surge of outrageLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Claims worth thousands ofrands are to be submitted tothe City of Cape Town by
Strandfontein homeowners wholost expensive electrical equip-ment during a recent power surge.
Several households came to acomplete standstill on Thursdaymorning when a cable thief at-tempted to steal copper cables at asubstation in Lusitania Road.
The man was electrocuted anddied during the surge.
The unidentified man, from the7de Laan informal settlement,Strandfontein, was killed by a mas-sive rush of electricity coursingthrough his body, authorities say.
In response to the outrage fromaffected residents venting on Face-book, his sibling sent a message tocommunity forum Proudly Strand-fontein.
“Unfortunately it was my broth-er who died in the cable theft inci-dent. I do apologise for the incon-venience he caused to a lot of peo-ple.
“Please be aware that eventhough he lived in an informal set-tlement, he actually came from agood home. He came back abouttwo months ago from rehab. Cleanand sober from drugs, but unfortu-nately got pulled in again,” itstates.
Meanwhile, appliances and elec-trical goods in some cases explodeddue to the power surge.
Residents found the electricitysupply to their homes had been in-terrupted and, once the flow hadbeen restored, found the goodswere defunct.
Bayview resident Doreen McCa-rthy is without a TV and micro-wave.
She says: “It is a huge inconven-ience. These substations should beenclosed to prevent such inci-dents.”
But council disagrees.Mayoral Committee member for
Utility Services Ernest Sonnen-berg says: “Minisubs are designedto operate in public spaces withoutthe requirement of an additionalfence. The units are fully enclosedto prevent unauthorised accessand also to contain any explosionas a result of a malfunction.”
When asked what council is do-ing to prevent such incidents, hesays: “The City uses alternative
material wherever possible in or-der to deter thieves.
“However, this is not always pos-sible and we therefore work togeth-er with residents to prevent cabletheft and vandalism.”
A handful of residents are al-ready in the process of submittingclaims.
All claims must be submitted inwriting.
Once a claim is received, a full in-vestigation will be done.
If you wish to submit an insur-ance claim against the City, it mustbe done within six months of theoriginal date of the incident.
Claimants are requested to sub-mit an email or letter which mustinclude the date, time and place ofthe incident, the nature of the inci-dent, the nature of the damage and
a cost estimate to repair or remedyit, the reason why the party consid-ers the City to be liable, as well ascontact details for office, home, fax, email and postal addresses.V Claims can be submitted via email [email protected]. Alternatively post it to The Head: Claims, Insurance Branch, 12th Floor at the Paul SauerBuilding, 1 Adderley Street, Cape Town,8001.

MYCITI: SOME HICCOUGHS ON LAUNCH WEEKEND
All aboardbus serviceLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Teething problems are to be expected asthe MyCiTi bus service comes toMitchell’s Plain.
Residents hopped onto the sleek busesfor the first time on Saturday.
Several glitches have been reported, butit was a smooth ride for many first-timepassengers making their way to the citycentre.
The N2 Express Service, which linksMitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha to theCape Town CBD, was launched at the week-end.
Braving the harsh weather, commuterswere eager to try out the new mode of pub-lic transport which departs from TownCentre.
A Mitchell’s Plain resident who was keento get on board, was left disappointed afterarriving at the kiosk only to find it closed.
“When we arrived at the kiosk on Satur-day afternoon to get a MyConnect card, thekiosk was closed. There were no clearmarkings as to where to wait for the MyCi-Ti bus either. There was also no timetablefor kiosk operating times,” she says.
A temporary bus station is located at thetransport interchange, just metres fromwhere the bus station is being built.
Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee mem-ber for Transport, says numerous adver-tisements were placed about the issuing of
free MyConnect cards to the residents ofMitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha.
“These advertisements appeared in thelocal community papers, indicating whereand at what times residents will be able tocollect their cards,” he says. “That said, weare not aware of this specific incident andwant to point out that it is possible that theresident arrived at the kiosk after the oper-ating times.”
The cards are available at the Golden Ar-row Bus Service kiosk in the Town Centrebetween 08:00 and 16:30.
Quadriplegic Taswell Williams says theservice is also not accessible to groups ofdisabled people.
“With only one seat for a person in awheelchair, we are unable to travel ingroups,” he comments. “We will protest atthe bus station and prevent the servicefrom running on schedule if a commitmentis not made to address this problem.”
Herron apologised for the inconven-ience.
“The City is acutely aware of the need toimprove on universal access for peoplewith special needs who make use of publictransport and we want to apologise for be-ing unable to assist a group of passengersin wheelchairs,” he said. “Unfortunatelythe 12m low-floor buses and 9m low-floorbuses are designed to accommodate onlyone passenger in a wheelchair at a time. However, the 18m low-floor buses will beable to accommodate two passengers inwheelchairs. These buses will be opera-tional during the second phase of the N2Express service to be rolled out at the endof the year.”
Mitchell’s Plain resident Netacha Kay-ser got on board at the temporary bus sta-tion at Town Centre during peak hour onMonday morning.
Initially impressed with the “profession-al service”, she was left disappointed afterseveral technical problems.
Her one-hour commute to the CBD start-ed at 06:18.
“At 06:50 we stopped at the Civic Centre, but the station doors wouldn’t open. It tookabout 10 minutes to open. They said it wasa ‘technology’ problem,” she explains.
Her commute home was an even biggerlet down. “The bus to Mitchell’s Plainwasn’t on time. I just missed the 16:10 bus.I have a timetable which indicates the nextbus would depart at 16:25, but it only ar-rived at 16:40 and left the station at 16:45,”Kayser says. “Then we couldn’t tap out asthe tapping device wasn’t working. We hadto wait for the next bus to tap out as a penal-ty would be charged if we didn’t tap outwithin two hours.”
Despite the bumpy start to her MyCiTiexperience, she says: “The service is supe-rior. If you like upgrades, you’ll love MyCi-Ti. I hope the glitches will be ironed outeventually. If the service is successful inother areas, it can be the same for Mitch-ell’s Plain.”
Herron maintains no problems were ex-perienced on the Mitchell’s Plain route onSaturday, Sunday or Monday. “All the bus-es departed on time,” he insists.
LOADING: The Mitchell’s Plain route from Town Centre to the Civic Centre station in central Cape Townis a direct route with no stops along the way. However, in the opposite direction, the bus will stopat Sesame, Marguerite, Kerrem and Pontiac before reaching Town Centre.
SECURITY ON BOARD: Law Enforcement and Traffic Services officials were out in full force ahead ofthe roll-out of the service in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday. PHOTOS: BRUCE SUTHERLAND/CITY OF CAPE TOWN

TAFELSIG: CHARGES WITHDRAWN AGAINST PAGAD OFFICIAL AFTER CARS AND HOMES STONED IN MARCH
Courting drug dealers’ furyLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Charges against a Pagad member hasbeen provisionally withdrawn.
An alleged Tafelsig drug dealer laida charge of malicious damage to propertyagainst Pagad Tafelsig branch coordinatorMogamat Keraan.
This follows an anti-crimemarch throughthe area last Sunday.
Violence erupted during themarch organ-ised by the community and Pagad.
The group of nearly 200 peoplemarched toknown drug dens. During the march carsand houses were stoned.
But demonstrators say it was all in self-de-fence. Keraan says while walking throughthe community, the group cameacross hous-es of drug merchants.
Residents pointed out the drugdenswhichthey then approached.
Merchants were also asked to stop theiractivities.
“The man who laid a charge against medid not come out of his house when request-ed to engage with the public,” Keraan in-sists. “So how can he claim it was me?”
Keraan was ordered to appear in court onWednesday.
He says: “I am disturbed that gang mem-bers and drug lords can make such caseswhen residents in this community are beingheld hostage by these very people.”
He believes the process followed in charg-ing him was unconstitutional.
“The attorney said the process of charging
me was unconstitutional. Police then provi-sionally withdrew the charges,” Keraansays.
Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson Con-stable Zandile Marashula confirmed a caseofmalicious damage to propertywas openedfor investigation.
“This is relating to an incident in Jonkers-hoek Street in Tafelsig,” she says.
“We will not allow acts of vigilantism andtotal disregard for law and order. Any groupor person who makes themselves guilty willface the full force of the law.”
Following the march, Keraan said: “Whattranspired was that the merchants decidedto react violently towards us. We had theright to protect ourselves.”
He maintains police have failed in theirduties to serve and protect the community.
“The march was a result of a communitysaying they are fed-up with crime and beingheld hostage by a handful of drugmerchantsand gangsters,” Keraan adds.
Freedom Park resident Chantal Kempsays her children are no longer allowed toplay outside as gangsters recruit the littleones to do their dirty work.
“My kinders kan nie eers in die straat loopnie. Die gangsters wil my seun met ’n messteek want hy wil nie saam hulle loop nie,”she laments.
With so much idle time, children are easytargets, says a Freedom Park father.
“We need to keep them in school and notcondone bad or criminal behaviour,” he urg-es.
An increase in police visibility is evident, following the march, Keraan says.
“Whymustwe first get involved before thepolice do their job?”V To report crime call the Mitchell’s Plain Police Stationon (021) 370 1600 or CrimeStop on 0860 010 111. COMMUNITY CRUSADER: Pagad Tafelsig branch coordinator Mogamat Keraan. PHOTO: LAILA MAJIET

Applications formunicipal rates rebatesfrom the City of Cape Town, now onlyhave to be submitted once every three
years, as opposed to annually.“This resolution was made last month in
an attempt to bemore caring to themost vul-nerable residents in the city,” says Ian Neil-son, the deputy mayor of Cape Town andMayoral Committee member for Finance.Neilson says this move will significantly
lessen the administrative burden on boththe applicants and the City.Approximately 26 000 applications are re-
ceived each year and applicants have to pro-vide their identity documents, proof of in-come, tax forms and three months’ bankstatements with each application.“However, it is important to note that ap-
plicants who experience a significantchange (decrease or increase) in their house-hold income are still required to re-apply fora rebate on their municipal accounts in theapplicable financial year,” he cautions.
Those residents who have applied for amunicipal rates rebate during the 2013/14 fi-nancial year and whose financial situationremains unchanged, only have to re-applyfor a rebate as from 1 July 2016.Pensioners and people with disabilities

More reliable birth control on offerAn added form of birth control is now on of-fer for women in the province. The provincial health department is nowoffering Implanon and this offers 100% pro-tection.Implanon is implanted in the upper arm
and lasts for three years.Through slow release of progesterone, awoman may prevent falling pregnant.
The process is virtually painless due to lo-cal anaesthetic used before insertion.Implanon is fairly new in South Africa, but has been used in many European coun-tries for a number of years and is the pre-ferred form of birth control for many wom-en, says a health department statement. The whole process, including counsellingand paperwork, takes about 30 minutes.

MONTROSE PARK: ‘EMPTY PROMISES’ FAIL TO HELP FAMILY
Offer to help on rubble heapLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Cold disregard from national govern-ment has smothered a family’s spark ofhope for improved living conditions.
The Montrose Park family lost all theirpossessions in a fire in April last year. The shroud of despair was lifted when
when national government swooped in totheir rescue, promising to assist in rebuild-ing their home. But that was last October and the rebuild
has yet to begin.Shacked up in a cold wood-and-iron struc-
ture Doreen Africa (63) and her family aremournful that the promise of help won’t ma-terialise.The rebuild of “Ma Africa’s” home was
championed by deputy minister for humansettlements, Zou Kota-Fredericks.“I was filled with a sense of renewed hope
when the deputy minister visited me sayingshe would assist in the rebuilding of myhome,” Africa says. “Now I am left disap-pointed. It is cold and wet in my shack.”Africa and her family were woken up by
a neighbour’s screams and the smell ofsmoke when a blaze ripped through theirhome in April last year.
An electrical fault sparked the blaze. The Mitchell’s Plain Housing Association
was asked to facilitate the project. Chairper-sonMaryTaka says shehas runout of excus-es for the deputy minister’s office.“Promises were made and we were asked
to be the middle man. Ma Africa comes tous in search of answers and feedback, butweare unable to answer her questions aswe toohave been left in the dark,” Taka insists.Africa says: “The officials who visited my
home asked what I would like to be built. Ijust wanted amodest dwelling formy familyand me.”“Mygranddaughter is inmatric. She is liv-
ing with a family friend as I cannot expecther to study and live in these conditions atthis crucial point in her schooling career,”Africa says. “Her ID was destroyed in thefire. Officials promised they would provideme with a letter to take to Home Affairs sothey could replace the ID at no cost, but thishas not happened.”The pensioner will now have to dig deep
and fork out R140 for a replacement ID.Despite numerous attempts and a commit-
ment to respond by deadline, officials in thedeputy minister’s office failed to furnishPeople’s Postwith comment at the time of go-ing to print.
DISAPPOINTED: Doreen Africa (63) says nationalgovernment is feeding people “empty promises”. Herhouse was gutted in a blaze in April last year. an acting capacity.ColonelCassGoolam isno
stranger toMitchell’s Plain.Goolam, who was previ-
ously stationed in Steen-berg, worked in the Mitch-ell’s Plain cluster as the co-ordinator for visiblepolicing. He was temporarily ap-
pointed at Steenberg PoliceStation as the station com-mander in 2012 because ofhis vast experience in gang-infested areas.Appointed as acting station commander,
he says community mobilisation and inte-grated policing are high onhis list of priori-ties for the area.Withanopen-doorpolicy, he assures resi-
dents of his commitment to the fight againstcrime.“I encourage the community to come for-
ward and raise their concerns about allega-tions of police corruption and complacen-cy,” he says. “We are open to criticism andany ideas the public may have in address-ing crime in Mitchell’s Plain.”Since taking over the reins late last
month, he has already mobilised severalcommunities to join hands with police ina bid to curb crime. His appointment as acting station com-

Brand, nowamajor gener-al, has been promoted tohead the Khayelitsha clus-ter. He spent the last fouryears and three months inMitchell’s Plain.Mitchell’s Plain Commu-
nity Policing Forum chair-person Abie Isaacs saysGoolam is a seasoned policeofficer. “We look forward tocontinuing working withColonel Goolam to buildstrong community safetystructures which will be theeyes and ears of the police. These structures are vital inreducing crime,” he says.Mitchell’s Plain cluster
commander Major GeneralJeremy Vearey previously told People’sPost due to the critical appointment of a sta-tion commander, head office will ensure itwill happen as soon as possible (“Shift intop brass for ‘Plain”, 12 June). However, a month since the announce-

Metrorail march back on trackHENRY BOOYSEN
@henryspoke
Cosatu will commence mass action on Sat-urday against Metrorail in defiance of theparastatal’s decision to increase train fares. The demonstration, whichwill take place
at noon at the Station Plaza at Cape Townstation, was previously delayed when theNational Economic Development and La-
bour Council (Nedlac) entered into negotia-tions with Cosatu and the Ministry ofTransport.“Cosatu condemnsMetrorail for the deci-
sion to proceed with the train fare increas-es. The fare increase is a double blow tocommuters in the light of the bad servicesthat are currently being provided byMetro-rail and we will march in protest on 12 Ju-ly,” says Cosatu provincial secretary TonyEhrenreich.“When train services are delayed, work-
ers and commuters must take buses andtaxis. This means extra costs on top of thecost of weekly or monthly tickets they havealready paid to use Metrorail services.”Metrorail’s failure to delay the increase
“until the service improves and workersare not prejudiced, has left Cosatu with noalternative but to file a Class Action suitagainst them to recover the lost money forworkers”, Ehrenreich says. The increase in single tickets range be-
tween 50 to 80c and Cosatu estimates the in-crease will generate up to R3million for themonth of July.Metrorail regional manager Richard
Walker says services will continue despitethe protest plans.

LABOUR: YOU CAN BEAT UNEMPLOYMENT BLUES
The grim horror of joblessnessLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
The dark psychological impact of beingunemployed needs to be brought tolight.
This comes fromclinical psychologistDrAdelbert Scholtz, who is urging the needfor recognising the traumatic psychologi-cal erosion caused by long-termunemploy-ment.The harmful effect is on both individual
South Africans and the national psyche. As the sole provider for his family,
*Mark slipped into despair after being re-trenched.Desperate to put food on the table, hewas
willing to clean windows to earn a few ex-tra rands. But he was losing hope against the battle
to not be engulfed by depression.“I felt I had failed my family. Having
been the sole breadwinner for as long asI have been married, losing my job mademe feel like I could no longer fulfil my pur-pose,” Mark says. “I felt hopeless and lost, but then realised things were not going toget better if I did not do something to turnmy hardships around.”Paralysed by unemployment, he had
reached an all-time new low.“I began to beg for odd jobs. Being able
to buy a loaf of bread felt like a victory andsoon my faith and dignity was being re-stored,” he recalls. “This gave me thestrength to persevere.”Research shows high rates of long-term
unemployment are associated with higherrates of depression, says Scholtz, and cau-tions that depression is the most commoncause of suicide,Mark has since found a permanent job.“I went out there in a bid to restore my
dignity, but often felt like I was losing apart of my soul every day,” the 54-year-oldmansays. “Iwaswilling todoanythingandwith each new day a new opportunitywould present itself. God opened doors andthat was a sign that no matter the circum-
stances, He will never abandon you.”One’s identity is ultimately linked to
one’s occupation, says Scholtz.“Your status is also dependent on your
occupation. Furthermore work is wherewe spend most of our time,” Scholtz ex-plains. “If somebody cannot find work, hisor her need for an identity as well as theirhuman dignity is thwarted.”The adage every cloud has a silver lining
might seem insincere and patronising, butthis is part of Scholtz’s encouragement tothose in the doldrums.
Losing your job may be the best time fora little introspection and re-evaluation.This includes creating your own oppor-
tunities, volunteering or learning a newskill or two, Scholtz recommends.“Hardships are often a test of your faith
so it is vital to not lose hope. Create yourown opportunities. Put out feelers for va-cancies and personally hand in your CV.This leaves a good impression as it showsyour keen interest in a job,” he says.Volunteering or working for free may
not be such a bad idea either, Scholtz adds.
“It is a good plan to work for free. Yoursupervisor may be satisfied with yourwork and offer you a permanent position. Before you know it the company will real-ise they can’t do without you. It also looksgood on your CV.”Scholtz, also a retired pastor, believes
“God has a soft spot for the poor”.“Often poor people think the Lord has
forgotten them and that God is punishingthem, but He has not forgotten you. Neverlose sight of this,” he firmly states.“Happiness is not to be found in riches
or the pursuit of pleasure. It is a by-productof something else. It is created when youmake a difference in the life of somebodyelse.”The SouthAfricanDepression andAnxi-
ety Group (Sadag) confirms facing the ter-rifying prospect of unemployment is a real-ity that many South Africans struggle toavoid these days. With high unemployment rates and the
job market looking increasingly bleak forfirst-time job seekers, the stage is set forthe ever-escalating prevalence of depres-sion among the unemployed.Unemployment and the resultingdepres-
sion is a grim challenge facing mentalhealth professionals.Sadag manager Cassey Amoore offers
self-help tips to address depression.“Don’t bottle things up. If you have some
bad news or amajor upset, tell people closeto you about it and how you feel. Althoughyoumaywant to be alone, youmay feel bet-ter if you try to take part in some routineactivities you previously enjoyed withyour family and friends. Increase positivecontact,” she says.“Try tomakea list of small activities that
can be done often during the day to showpositive loving feelings. Maintain a gooddiet and exercise. Get outdoors, even if itis only for awalk.Any formof exercise, rig-orous or gentle can have beneficial re-sults.”V Call a counsellor at Sadag on 0800 20526 or SMS31393.

TOWN CENTRE: SPIKE IN ROBBERIES AT CBD
Crime a persistent cancerLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
An apparent lull in businessrobberies at the Town Centrehas been shattered.
Shop owners and traders are nowon high alert following a spate ofburglaries at the trading precinct. This comes after traders and
shoppers enjoyeda relative calm fora month and half.New security measures are need-
ed to curb the number of break-insat the shopping hub, traders say.On Wednesday 2 July, a popular
clothing store in Melody Walk wasransacked in the early hours.Traders are now concerned a new
syndicate has moved into the shop-ping hub. This follows the arrest ofa robbery gang in May.Jasmine Harris, the vice chair-
person of the CBD Community Po-lice Forum (CPF) subforum whotrades in the Town Centre, says bigbusinesses are often targeted bycriminals looking for easy pickings.“These businesses rake in the
mostmoney, yet invest very little inimproving safety at the Town Cen-tre,” she insists.Police spokesperson ZandileMar-
ashula confirms the burglary.“It is alleged that on Wednesday
evening the complainant locked thestore and the followingmorning theburglary was discovered. Clothingitems were stolen and a businessburglary case has been opened forinvestigation,” she says.“At this stage the investigation is
still ongoing.”No arrests have been made. The clothing store is just 90 steps
away from a CCTV camera.Meanwhile, commuters are
robbeddaily at the trading precinct. But many incidents go unreported, officials say.Police spokesperson Sergeant
Jerome Voegt encourages victimsof crime to immediately report theincidents to the police.“It is of utmost importance to re-
port crime in order for the police todeploy officers accordingly,” hepoints out.A fruit-and-veg vendor says trad-
ers’ livelihoods are threatened ascrime deters people from shoppingat Town Centre.“Informal traders are worst af-
fected. We run small businesses andthis is our only income,” she says.
“Criminals are holdingushostage.”The gang believed to be behind a
spate of robberies and break-ins atTown Centre was bust in May fol-lowing a robbery at a Cash for Goldstore. The suspects, who have been
linked to a spate of crimes includingmurder, armed robbery, theft andburglary, have been linked to theGhetto Taxis gang. The robbery gang was ousted fol-
lowing the arrest of two suspectswanted in connection with the jew-ellery store robbery on Friday 9May.Rings, earrings, gold chains and
braceletswith an estimated amountof R2.8m were stolen.V To report crime in and around Town Centre, call sector commander Sergeant Bongani Mdingi on 0798941683 or Captain HarryBrickles on (021) 3701703 or 0798941683.
ENTRY POINT: Burglars are believedto have entered the store throughthe roller gate at the front entrance.

CHESS: TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES IN MITCHELL’S PLAIN
Youth hooked onthe right movesLAILA MAJIET
@laila_newsie
Life is like chess. If you make a mistake, you have the ability to make a move tochange your fate.
This is the belief of avid chess player Ash-win Gainsford (20), winner of the Mitchell’sPlain Open Chess Tournament.
The Rocklands resident was crownedchampion after he scored 6.5 out of 7, withhis nearest rival scoring one point less.
His interest in the sport was awakened atthe age of four when his father began toteach him the basics of the game.
However, it was not until he was seventhat he began to play.
“Chess has helped me a lot in life. It is in-teresting and keeps me motivated. It alsohelped me in school. It teaches you how tostay focused,” says the former Cedar Highpupil.
People who don’t understand the gamewill be quick to brand it a “waste of time”as opponents can spend up to four hours bat-tling for dominance.
“The more you learn about the sport, themore you will begin to love it,” he insists.
Winning the tournament was a prizedmo-ment for him. “I had faced many losses, soto have won is a great feeling. It makes mefeel like I have achieved something in life,”Gainsford beams.
The tournament, a first of its kind, washosted and organised by theMitchell’s Plain
Chess Club.Chairperson of the club Reggie Sinden
says the tournament was held in the run-upto an open street chess festival planned forAugust.
“The tournamentwas the first part of a de-velopment programme funded by the De-partment of Cultural Affairs and Sport. A to-tal of R20 000 has been allocated for chess de-velopment in Mitchell’s Plain,” he says.
The open street festival is scheduled to beheld at the Rocklands Civic Centre on Satur-day 9 August.
“We will have tables all around the monu-ment at the Civic Centre, ready for chessplayers,” Sinden says.
With more and more Mitchell’s Plainyouth showing an interest in the game, achess revolution is on the cards for this CapeFlats neighbourhood, he believes.
Mitchell’s Plain’s chess prodigy Seth-Ri-ley Adams (11) also participated in the tour-nament.
The Rocklands youth, the African YouthChess Championshipwinner in his age cate-gory, placed first in the under-12 division atthe Mitchell’s Plain Open.
Sinden says: “Chess is like a drug. Onceyou play, you get hooked. But unlike narcot-ics, chess is not destructive. Chess playersknow no limits when it comes to furtheringtheir education.”V To join the Mitchell’s Plain Chess Club or for moreinformation call Eugene Gordon on 084 406 7636 orReggie Sinden on 082 325 4440.

Lightning at KillarneyADRIAN PHEIFFER
Ernie “Lightning” Leite and Superbikestar Ronald Slamet are two competitorsexpected to shoot the lights out during
the fifth round of theWingfieldMotors Pow-er Series at Killarney on Saturday.Anyone who braved the cold during the
most recent meet will agree the refreshingmanner inwhich the tournament showcasesthe talent of drivers –who are oftenmechan-ically challenged and outclassed on a drysurface – was a hugely positive feature. While Slamet has retained his overall lead
in the Superbike championship, Leite was
even more impressive in the Midas Club-man category. At the wheel of his class C VWCaddy bak-
kie, a model designed as a light commercialworkhorse, his opposition included the lat-est in total engineering from BMW and Au-di, among others. And he was down in 22nd place on the
starting grid after the final practice session. But when the heavens opened at the start,
he used his head more than his acceleratoras he picked his way carefully through thefield. With cars going off the track in all direc-
tions, it was a magnificent performance –so much so, that he briefly led the field untilhaving to settle in second placewhen hewaspassed Danie van Niekerk’s 325 BMW short-ly before the finish. While the Midas category has a bye this
week, the hyper-enthusiastic Leite will beseen in his low-life class D, Fiat 128 Rallyein the Mutlu Battery Classic Car events.Could there be a repeat performance if itrains?Whether wet or dry, he is going to face up
to Vance Kearney’s Capri Perana V8, AntonRollino (Chev CanAm V8), Chris Carolin(Mazda rotary) and Martin Richards in hissuper-quick Datsun KB210. And it won’t beeasy. The brutal power of the big Masters V8s
is not conducive to racing in skating rinkconditions and with only four of the one-make category able to take the chequeredflag last month, the drivers will all be on apoint hunt in the coming round.Much is expected from 18-year-old Marco
Busi in the Makita Supercar category. Theformer GTi star will make his debut in theone-make class. But with two sleek British Juno sports
cars, including championship leader Fran-
cis Carruthers in his new SS7, lined upagainst an array of the best German Por-sches in the Big Foot Express Sports and GTevents, it’s difficult to predict the winner ofthis one.Other events on Saturday include races
for the Charl Electrical Engineering FineCars and Formula Libre single-seaters.Among the two wheelers, the Mike HopkinsSuperbikes and the Powersport, Clubmanand Classic motorcycles will all be seen inaction.
LEANING LOW: Ronald Slamet leads the Superbike Championship by three points with 102points in class A, ahead of David Enticott with 99 points in class C.

the sport,” she says.“You have to give up a lot, but in the
end it’s all worth it because we will becompeting on an international stage.”The Grade 9 pupil took up the sport
when her mother’s friend suggested shegive it a try. She was only in Grade 2 atthe time and she has been hooked eversince.Petersen started at the same age when
her swimming coach recommended shegive the sport a try.“I like that youare able to express your-
self in ways that you aren’t able to in oth-er sports,” Petersen says. “You’re able todance, but you’re still in thewater. It getsyour creative juices flowing. This sportis both about creativity and physical abil-ity.”For her, the toughest aspect of synchro-
nised swimming is memorising and per-fecting routines, and timing. The two youths started competing as a
duo six years ago, dominating the sportalmost immediately. They are members of Barracudas Syn-
chro Club and are coached by Sue Man-ners-Wood, the national senior synchro-nised swimming coach. She believes the duo is headed straight
for the top of the sport.“They havewon their duet in every age
group they have competed in throughoutthe years,” she says. “They have alsobeen identified by Swimming South Afri-ca as the duet to take over from the cur-rent SA senior duet. Theyhave been iden-tified to compete at the CommonwealthGames in Durban in 2020 and are beinggroomed for that competition.”Petersen and Keyte qualified for the
MediterraneanCupwith a score of 6.3 outof 10 at the National Championships in
April. The pair win gold at the champion-ships.They will compete against the sport’s
most elite under-16 teams at the competi-tion. The world’s top three sides, Russia,Spain and China will also be in attend-ance.But a lackof facilities, finances and reg-
ular competition against top oppositionmeans the girls have virtually no hope ofbringing home a medal, but Manners-Wood has set her students a differentgoal.“I look at it in terms of score. I would
like to see the girls improve on the scorethey achieved at the National Champion-ships,” she says.“I would ideally like to see my girls get
between 6 and 6.5, which would meanthey are very competent. That would bea good achievement. I’m also being con-servative, because I think they can get 6.8or 7.”V Petersen, Keyte and the six other members ofthe team will each have to pay R30 000 to attendthe tournament. Anyone able to assist the teamwith sponsorship should call Francis Keyte, convenor of Western Province Synchronised Swimming,on 072 775 2772.

CT Marathon aims for new heightsA recently sealed naming rights sponsor-ship could see the Cape Town Marathon be-come Africa’s first World Marathon Majors(WWM) event.WWM currently consists of the six largest
and most renowned annual marathons inthe world. The series charts the performances of ath-

andwithin everyone’smeans.By its veryna-ture, it requires determination, dedicationand the belief that a lot can come from verylittle,” he says.“Webelieve an event suchas thiswill have
a real and positive influence by enablingpeople to live their best possible lives. Welook forward to a long and positive associa-tion with the CT Marathon.”Themarathon will take place on Saturday
