Dear Parishioners, 100 years. The 1920’s are often referred to as the “roaring 20’s.” The Great War had ended and it was time to celebrate. But what made the 20’s different from previous years was the arrival of mass production and mass media which produced a mass culture. Radio was just beginning and the presidential election of 1920 was the first to report the results on the air…hours before it would appear in the papers. Lawrence of Arabia was one of the first heroes of this mass culture. What captured the attention of the public, was not just the reports of Lowell Thomas, but the “moving pictures” captured by his photographer, Henry Chase. A new era had begun. The year also saw the beginning of prohibition. Law enforcement was not prepared for what was to follow. Much of the crime and violence of this new decade centered around the production, distribution and consumption of alcohol. 1920 brought many firsts. It was the first time women were allowed to vote in a national election. It was the start of the League of Nations—the pre-cursor to the U.N. Another organization begun that year was the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) . It was dedicated to defending the rights of those on the left and the right, and everyone in-between. In baseball, the big name was Babe Ruth who was paid $125,000 for the year. However, it was the Cleveland Indians who won the World Series beating the Brooklyn Dodgers, 5 games to 2 in the best of 9. Man-O-War, perhaps the most famous race horse of all, retired that year after two seasons. He won 20 of his 21 races. St. Pope John Paul II, Maureen O’Hara, Mickey Rooney, Yul Brenner, Walter Matthau, Peggy Lee, Stan Musial, and Sugar Ray Robinson are some of the people born in 1920. Baby Ruth candy-bars, band-aides, hair dryers, and internal combustion engines were all brand new. Joan of Arc was canonized a saint and Agatha Christie introduced readers to Hercule Poirot in her novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Other top novels for the year included This Side of Paradise by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Main Street by Sinclair Lewis. The term ponzi scheme was coined that year after Charles Ponzi’s fraudulent pyramid collapsed causing six banks to fail and thousands to lose their savings. How will 2020 be different from past years? The winners and losers, the new inventions, the victories and challenges may all be different, but the players are pretty much the same. The selfish and the noble, the bold and the timid, the good and the bad, they are all still around. God will also be the same; and if we trust him, He will walk us through this new year. Fr. Jeff

SCHOOL NEWS! Monday, Jan, 6-Classes resume Wednesday, January 1 New Year’s Day is the feast of Mary the Mother of God. This is a holy day of obligation. You have the same obligation to attend Mass as on Sunday. Masses are at 5:30pm, Tuesday, December 31st and 9am, Wednesday, January 1.

Year-End Giving—We are so grateful for the generosity of our parishioners throughout the entire year. During December, many people review their giving and determine that a year end charitable gift will benefit their tax status for the calendar year. If you wish to make a donation to Blessed Sacrament by making a general parish contribution to the church, or a gift to the School’s Annual Fund, you may drop it into the collection basket during Mass or mail it to the school or parish office. All charitable contributions must be postmarked and/or received by December 31, 2019 to be included in the year-end statement for tax year 2019.

The End is Coming! New this year - parishioners can choose to receive their end-of-the-year contribution tax statement via email. Please go to our parish website and complete the simple form at www.bsps.org/parish-giving and you'll receive your statement in mid-January 2020. This process saves time and money for the parish and if you misplace your statement, you can simply reprint it from your email. Please contact Lisa Sarnowski at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Manalive by G. K. Chesterton This classic novel by the brilliant G. K. Chesterton tells the rollicking tale of Innocent Smith, a man who may be crazy or possibly the most sane man of all. Beautifully written, mixing the ridiculous with the profound, full of hilarious dialogue and lushly detailed writing, Chesterton's main character Innocent Smith somehow manages to restore joy to all the dull and cynical lives around him. In this delightfully strange mystery, Chesterton demonstrates why life is worth living, and that sometimes we need a little madness just to know we are alive. This, and many other audio e-books, talks, videos, and live discussions are available at no charge to you via our parish subscription to Formed. If you aren’t already signed up for your free access to Formed www.bsps.formed.org is the site to go. If you need assistance, please call Bob Vincent at 678-570-7118
