HUGO I recommend Papeterie Nota Bene on Avenue du Parc, which is a few minutes away from the hotel and carries hard-to-find brands like Rhodia, Whitelines and Maruman. Russell, the owner, is an important figure in the city’s artistic community – he has a collection of graphic- design books on the sec-ond floor of his boutique

and sells reconditioned vintage typewriters. Where to take a break around town.L’échappée belle dans le coin.

Going back to school has never been so sweet. Weekend classes at Maison Christian Faure, a pastry shop and professional pastry school, are designed for home cooks looking to refine their skills. Lessons are led by a guest Meilleur Ouvrier de France (M.O.F.), as well as by Faure himself, also an M.O.F. – chefs compete to earn the prestigious title – and cov-er the techniques required to pre-pare the perfect French dessert, like macarons and brioche. It’s no coin-cidence that Faure chose a heritage building that dates back to 1853 for his pastry school – the classroom overlooks rue de la Capitale, where women used to bake loaves of bread

in a communal oven. While stu-dents sift and stir on the top floors, Faure’s confections are served at the pastry shop below, where you can snack on a menu of French clas-sics (salade niçoise, tartines) before digging into a mille feuille. Now that’s best-in-class.

3 5 5 , P L A C E R O Y A L E , 5 1 4 - 5 0 8 - 6 4 5 2 ( S C H O O L / É C O L E ) , 5 1 4 - 5 0 8 - 6 4 5 3 ( P A S T R Y S H O P / P Â T I S S E R I E ) , M A I S O N C H R I S T I A N F A U R E . Look up, way up. The architecture tours run by the Toronto Society of Architects will take you to new heights. Marta O’Brien, an architec-tural historian with 15 years of experience leading walking tours in the city, trains guides to go beneath the surface, so you’ll find out how Will Alsop propped the Sharp Centre for Design at OCAD University on crayon-coloured stilts and what went into the making of the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Just don’t expect to roam the grounds of Casa Loma: The focus here is on con-temporary architecture. The Art & Performance walk includes the Princess of Wales Theatre, recently

spared the wrecking ball, while the Culture & Campus tour makes a stop at the University of Toronto’s Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, where you’ll learn about the multi- coloured facade. (Hint: The design is inspired by genetics.) Talk about higher learning.

As president of the Design Exchange, Shauna Levy has helped put Toronto on the international design

map, from a collaboration with Pharrell Williams to next month’s Politics of Fashion | Fashion of Politics, guest-curated by Jeanne Beker.

01 DANIEL FARIA GALLERYDaniel is the exclusive art dealer for Douglas Coupland. I loved Slogans for the Twenty-First Century: panels of bright, bold graphics with observations about technology’s effect on life, and predictions about the future. Daniel est le marchand d’art exclusif de Douglas Coupland, dont j’ai aimé Slogans for the Twenty-First Century, une série de panneaux éclatants remplis d’obser-vations sur les effets de la technologie et de prédictions.1 8 8 S T . 02 TEMPLAR HOTEL Every detail here, from the firehouse cabinet boxes to the Corian bathrooms, has design top of mind. The walled light panels in the dining area create the illusion that it is always daytime, explaining why dinners extend into the early-morning hours! 3 4 8 A D E L A I D E S T . 03 SOHO HOUSE TORONTOThe Soho Mule is the drink. It’s made with fresh lime juice, ginger beer, vodka and ginger candy on a pick. Their brunch is also the best in town: fresh-baked pastries, eggs cooked any way you want and my daugh-ter’s favourite: mac ’n’ cheese. W . , 4 1 6 - 5 9 9 - 7 6 4 6 , S O H O H O U S E T O R O N T O . C O M

04 KUPFERT & KIMAs a vegetarian I can order anything on the takeout menu, but my favourite meal right now is the First Canadian: quinoa, tempeh, kale, pomegranate seeds and roasted yam served with a chia-tamari maple sauce. I also can’t deny myself the raw brownie made with almonds, walnuts, cocoa and dates. W . , 4 1 6 - 5 0 4 - 1 2 3 3 , K U P F E R T A N D K I M . C O M

05 KLAUS This shop carries international and contemporary design. We have bought a lot from the Moooi paper series for our home here, including the chandelier and the floor lamp. 3 0 0 K I N G S T . 06 THE BEACH I live about a three-minute walk from the boardwalk, and my family and I spend a lot of time on the beach with our new puppy. The area might need more devel-opment in terms of contemporary design and restau-rants, but it’s amazing to have a clean beach where you can swim and paddleboard right here in a cosmopolitan city.

02 CHEZ NICK This utterly charming diner dates back to 1920. It seems frozen in time amid the Westmount fashion shops and art galleries. And there’s something for everybody, from smoked meat to healthy plates. It’s a great place to watch the world drift by. G R E E N E , W E S T M O U N T , 5 1 4 - 9 3 5 - 0 9 4 6

03 LE TAJI’m of Indian descent, and I feel right at home at Taj, where the food is delicious. I travel a lot, so at home I have my rituals. Chicken tikka masala is my go-to, but my 11-year-old son, who’s also named Taj, prefers butter chicken. C O M

04 MOUNT ROYAL / LE MONT ROYAL Two years ago, I challenged myself to scale Mount Kilimanjaro. My training consisted of climbing Mount Royal every day, seven times in a row either walking or running, for two months. I would go there early, between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m., when the last of the late-night partiers are heading home and the early-morning athletes are working out.

05 L’AUBERGE SAINT-GABRIEL This is my headquarters! I hold meetings here, and I dine alone or with friends. At night, there’s a party atmosphere at Velvet, the candlelit speakeasy, which takes up part of the ground floor and a lower cellar-like level. 4 2 6 , R U E S A I N T - G A B R I E L , 5 1 4 - 8 7 8 - 3 5 6 1 , A U B E R G E S A I N T - G A B R I E L . 06 L’EXPRESS This is a superb bistro, a true classic; the lively atmos-phere and great food take me back to France, where I’m from. I like their wine list, which has lots of good French labels. And for dessert, you can’t deny yourself an île flottante (floating island). 3 9 2 7 , R U E S A I N T - D E N I S , 5 1 4 - 8 4 5 - 5 3 3 3 , R E S T A U R A N T L E X P R E S S . C O M
