This month’s cover photo contest winner: Betty Nickels

Woo Hoo! Happy New Year! 2013….amazing!

I am ready to get it kicked off to a great start. I hope you are, as well. We will be working on more editorial to keep you informed of what is going on in the community and nearby. Any suggestions you may have, are always welcome. We think of many things, however, we cannot think of everything. Your participation with articles, editorial ideas, event notices, school news, scout news, charities, and lots of pictures are what make your newsletter the best.

We really enjoyed all of the entries that came in for the Christmas Coloring Contest. There sure are a lot of talented children in this community. Can you imagine how hard it was to pick just one? You would not want that job. If you have

a child who entered, please let them know that their drawing was viewed and we thought they did an excellent job. The winner’s picture is displayed inside, along with four runner up pictures. Again, many thanks to our young artists.

As you know, next month is already Valentine’s Day. I have a wonderful idea. Send in a “special message” for a loved one and we will post it in the February issue. 30 words or less please. There will be a page dedicated to these messages and your “special someone” will be looking to see if you included them. Email messages to [email protected] and make sure to state your name, community, and the message.

Happy New Year! May it be the best year ever for you!

Karate Classes

The Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a well-rounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of  building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

Logical vs. Emotional MindThis article was provided by Gina P. Home Exercise/Coachwww.findmyfitnesstrainer.com/articles/

Logical-vs.-Emotional-Mind.asp

When you decide it’s time to eat better and start working out again, it is usually an emotionally based decision. After all, it’s more fun to eat junk and be lazy. However, there was probably some emotional pain you experienced that motivated you to want to make a change such as being disgusted with your reflection in the mirror or unhappy that your clothes don’t fit. In this case, emotional decisions are good because they motivate you to make a change in the right direction.

However, there are times when emotional decision making can backfire. When you think, “I am really feeling down right now and I will feel better if I have some ice cream,” you are being driven by an emotional response. Emotional responses are dangerous when they cause you to do something against

Golf Etiquette PracticesI would like to remind everyone of

a couple of common golf etiquette practices when at Tampa Palms. We would like for everyone to enjoy their round of golf here at the club and make it enjoyable for all. The number 1 reason golfers have stopped playing the game is due to the length of time it takes to play 18 holes. An average 18 hole round of golf should take no more than

4 hours and 12 minutes. When playing please keep in mind a few simple things to help your fellow members enjoy their round as well:

• Your place on the golf course is behind the group in front of you, not in front of the group behind you

• Choose a set of tees appropriate for your skill level

• Each member of a group should proceed directly to his or her ball. The group should not travel as a pack, going to first to one ball, then the next, and so on.

• If sharing a cart, don’t drive to the first ball, wait for the first player to

hit, then head to the second ball. Drop the first player off at his ball, drive on ahead to the second ball. The first player should walk over to the cart as the second player is playing his shot.

• When using a cart on a cart-path-only day, be sure to take a couple of clubs with you when you walk from the cart to the ball. This way, you won’t have to return to the cart if you discover you didn’t bring the appropriate club.

• When you think your shot might have landed out of bounds or be lost, immediately hit a provisional ball. Don’t walk ahead to search,

only to have to return to the original spot to replay a shot.

• Never hold up play because you’re in the middle of a conversation. Put the conversation on hold, take your stroke, then continue the conversation.

I hope the above tips will help make everyone’s round at Tampa Palms more enjoyable, and on the road to better pace of play times. If there is anything I can do to make your experience more enjoyable, please do not hesitate to contact me.

your greater goal. When you cater to them, you are giving up long-term true happiness (weight loss and feeling good about yourself) with short-term pleasure (eating the ice cream). If you stop yourself and remind yourself—‘emotional versus logical’ you will realize that logically you will feel even worse after eating the ice cream, and then you will be able to sidestep the emotional response that drives you to eat.

Sometimes it is self-sabotage that is the emotional response that derails you. For instance, if you go off your diet, emotionally you might start thinking, “See, I can’t do this, I am too weak. What is the point in trying. I am just going to eat what I want and accept that I will stay overweight.” Or, even worse, “I have already messed up this week, I am just going to eat what I want and start over Monday.” Emotionally, this feels good because you let yourself off the hook and you comfort yourself by saying that you will go back on your plan on Monday so it’s OK to enjoy yourself now.

However, when thinking ‘emotional versus logical’ you realize that you will just put on more weight this week that you will have to take off come Monday, so you are just shooting yourself in the foot.

Before making your next decision regarding food and eating, check in with yourself with the question ‘emotional versus logical—what is really going on?’ Even if you don’t end up changing your behavior, just being conscious of what makes your mind tick will be helpful to identify how you struggle and the various ways your mind likes to play tricks on you.

When a kid is acting up and starts to get really whiney and emotional, and you can tell you are not getting anywhere, you might have him or her ‘cool off ’ with some quiet time before continuing on his or her day. This allows the emotion to dissipate. Give yourself the same

time to ‘cool off ’ before you make a decision that will harm you in the end.

The mind is so powerful—it can be your biggest ally or your worst enemy. It is possible to stop your thoughts in their tracks and turn them around in an instance—the power is inside you!

All of our decisions ultimately are based on either a logical response or an emotional one. If you can identify the source of a decision you are about to make as being logical or emotional, you gain control over your actions. All actions begin with a thought, and while you are still at the ‘thought’ part and not yet at the ‘action’ part, you still have time and ability to make a change.

Tennis Tampa Palms Jr. Tennis AcademyQuICkSTarT TennISThe USTA has passed new rules governing competition for 10 and under tennis tournaments.  The new rules require that 10 and under tennis be played using slower moving and lower bouncing ball on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter rackets.

10 and Under Tennis is designed around the same concepts as Little League Baseball and other Youth Sports such as soccer and basketball, all of which use equipment and court/field sizes scaled to the size of young children. This allows children to achieve success the first time out, and, sustain that success as they continue to develop their skills. Quickstart: This is a new format for 10 and under children just learning to play Tennis.  It is designed to bring kids into the game utilizing a shorter court , smaller rackets, and lighter balls.

2 Star: The player has received previous instruction and is familiar with the basic strokes such as forehand, backhand and volley.

The Ball is in your Court. v

TEnn S tip of the Month

To put a topspin on a serve in tennis takes a lot of practice and repetition. Mechanics and physics are needed to topspin a ball,

so to use it in a serve definitely takes a lot of work - and a strong back. However, if you master the topspin in your serve, you will no doubt ace your opponents quite often.

Topspins are some of the most difficult shots in tennis to return because of the unpredictable way

the ball bounces. Physics and ball rotation control this feature. Just when you think a ball will bounce toward you, the ball has a spin and will bounce in the opposite direction. The method of perfecting a topspin in a serve is to know just where and how to hit the ball. It is more of a brushing or shaving the ball against the strings of a racket than it is a direct hit.

Hold a ball in your hand and look at it as if it were a clock. The 12:00 position is on top, 3:00 is on the right side, with 6 on the bottom and 9 on the left. When you topspin a ball, you will be sort of slicing down at it on

the 3:00 side for a righty and 9:00 for the lefty and attempting to make the ball spin. You want

to slice the ball and not slam it full force. Topspins are difficult, and you need to learn the tricks.

Standing on the service line, you must arch your

back a tad more than with a normal serve. Toss the ball up high, slightly behind your ear. As you bring your racket down for the serve, brush or shave the ball as if you were sort of chopping at it. You want the ball to spin down, not slam down. The ball has to graze the strings to set it into a spin. It takes a lot of practice to master the topspin, not to mention learning to use it in a serve.

You can see the action of a topspin by bouncing a tennis ball on the ground repeatedly. Keeping your strings aimed up and down, you can paddle a ball over and over again. Because of the way you are holding the racket, you can see and control where the ball bounces.

Now turn the racket so the strings are side to side and try to paddle the ball against the strings with a slicing action, keeping the strings of the racket in the side-to-side position. Bounce the ball over and over again. It will seem as though you are chopping it, rather than hitting it. Because the racket is at an awkward tilt, you are forced to slice at the ball in order to keep it bouncing. At this point you can see how the ball will spin when you slice it just right. You will also see that when the ball bounces, it is spinning and does not exactly bounce straight up and down. Once the ball hits the ground, it heads off into another direction. This is a topspin motion. By slowly and mechanically incorporating this side tilt into your wrist action, you will, with lots of practice, be topspinning your serve. The key is to get the feel for spinning the ball. Once you do, it is game, set, match after that.

Local WesleyChapel Man Uncovers $158,720 Home Insurance Scheme

It seems local homeowners are unknowingly throwing away hundreds of dollars each year on

home insurance. According to Steve Barry, the average homeowner in this area pays about $320 more per year than they may have to.

“In 2011 alone, 496 local homeowners paid a combined $158,720 in unnecessary insurance fees. I think a lot of people are getting overcharged

without even knowing it,” says Barry. Barry, the owner of the Steve Barry Great Florida Insurance Agency says he made this startling discovery after hisagency added the savings for clients in the area. “I always knew a lot of homeowners were paying way too much on their policies, but I never realized just how much until earlier this year,” saysBarry.

Local resident Carmen Fonseca found out firsthand. “Steve saved us $509 a year from where we had our (previous) insurance,” reports Fonseca. According to Barry, the average homeowner was overpaying by 24% ($320 per year). Some local homeowners were getting overcharged by as much as 67%. “I think it’s a shame that people are commonly being misled by greedy insurance agents who care more about making a big commission check than saving their clients money. As a result, many homeowners are basically flushing away hundreds of dollars right down the drain,” says Barry.

With recent layoffs in the area andreal estate foreclosures dominatingthe headlines, Mr. Barry believes it’s

time local residents received some good news, “I think people aretired of being told that they can’t savemoney on home insurance. I knowthat for some people, saving $300or $400 per year could make a realdifference in their lives.” The Barry Agency, which prides itself on “offering better coverage at lower prices” shops around more than 15 different providers to find the best rates available.

The agency was recently appointedby a select group of “A” rated carriersto carry out a competitive homeinsurance program that other agenciesin the area don’t have access to.Focused on a set of nine separatediscounts, the program offerstremendous savings opportunities tohomes built between 1983 and 2012and manufactured homes built after1995.

Clients who have had their roofreplaced or completed a “WindMitigation Inspection” can alsoexpect to save hundreds in additionto the outrageously low rates that areavailable to local residents.

“People who are looking to savesome money on their home insuranceare urged to call our office today. Allcalls are kept strictly confidential andtake around five minutes to complete, plus we even guarantee same daycallbacks,” says Barry. You can call 813-991-6969 to find out if you qualify. At Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, every stroke patient gets a CT scan of the brain and laboratory tests as soon as they arrive at the hospital so doctors may determine what kind of stroke the patient is having. “The hospital has the only 128 slice CT’s in Tampa Bay (one of which is exclusively dedicated to the emergency room) providing faster, more accurate diagnosis and treatment for stroke patients,” says Michael Longley, MD, emergency room physician. Each year about 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke, which is the nation’s third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, with about 4.7 million stroke survivors alive today.

Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association’s statements and guidelines for stroke care. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel wants people to know the warning signs of a stroke and what to do. A good way to remember the warning signs of stroke is FAST.

Want a safe, clean, climate controlled playground, where you can sit and

watch your kids play while enjoying a gourmet cup of coffee, latte, or cappuccino? Located in The Shops at Wiregrass near Dillard’s is a place amusingly called Monkey Bizness, which is owned and operated by husband and wife, Brad and Kristin Green. The couple had a vision of a clean comfortable place where they could bring their two young boys to play. Although many doors were shut in pursuit of their dream, this did not deter the couple. After many sacrifices the Green’s dream came to fruition. Monkey Bizness opened its doors in July 2012.

The 6,100-square-foot indoor play-center offers a colorful, over-sized soft play structure and other play equipment for kids up through age 7. Offering open play time seven days a week, it also features an art room stocked with supplies and will soon feature an Xbox Kinect concept for the children to enjoy. Parents can play along with their kids or enjoy Seattle’s Best coffee as they watch from one of two cafe areas that overlook the play area. Forget your child’s snacks? No worries, they offer a variety of healthy snacks-to-go. Monkey Bizness is part of a Denver-based franchise operation that has a dozen indoor family fun centers in five states.

Monkey Bizness not only is a family-oriented facility but also supports bringing new jobs into the community. Kristin, a former High School teacher in Pinellas County, has hired 3 local high school students and 7 college students. Kristin believes it’s important to teach our young adults how to balance school, work, family and community obligations. The staff is coached on creating a comfortable environment for the families by greeting each family by name to build rapport.

Families can enjoy a discounted entry at Monkey Bizness on Tuesday’s and Friday’s Family Night. Also on Tuesdays children can listen and color along at the 10:30am story time;

and enjoy an instructed art hour on Wednesdays at 11am. A passionate Kristin says, “It makes me tear up when I see a young child cry because they don’t want to leave. My children feel the same way. And so do I!”

Every parent must experience this convenient and enjoyable “home away from home” soon! Monkey Bizness opens at 9am each morning. They also offer “Drop n’ Shop” events and fun-filled private and semi-private Birthday Parties!

As a retired nurse, she knew

where to find the right care.

FHT-10274

Just a month before her 80th birthday, Fran fell and broke her left hip. Once an ambulance

arrived, she asked to be taken straight to Florida Hospital Tampa.

Having been a nurse for decades, Fran knew a hip fracture could be very serious. She also

knew Florida Hospital Tampa had the expertise to care for it. On March 3, 2012, surgeons

used the latest medical technology to place two rods in her hip, leaving only three small incisions. Fran’s

surgery was a success thanks to the exceptional care and compassion she received.

By April, Fran was able to go out and enjoy her birthday with her husband and family.

With 10 children, 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, Fran has a lot of people to celebrate with.

And she plans to keep celebrating for a long time to come.

“I wanted to get involved with Relay for Life because of the close community it forms. Everyone has a cancer story and Relay brings everyone together because of those stories.

The 18-hour event recognizes the strides made in cancer research and brings hope to those battling the disease. It also recognizes those who won their fight, the caregivers and those who have passed away.

This year I am part of an exceptional committee and I believe the 2013 Relay for Life will bring the New Tampa community even closer. It is astonishing to me how a disease so devastating can bring such a large group of people together for a

unified cause. Being a part of Relay teams the past few years has been a life-changing experience for me. “

-Lauren Poiley, a Wharton High School student.

“It’s not too late to get involved with the New Tampa Relay for Life. You can register online with an existing team or create a new team by going to www.relayforlife.org/newtampafl .

I got involved in Relay for Life because I wanted to help organize an event that inspires hundreds of survivors to know that people from all over are going through the same struggle. Relay for Life is essential for a community because everybody has a friend or family member that has gone through the uphill battle of cancer. As hope enters the heart of the community, only then can cancer be defeated.”

nEW TAmPA Jr. WOmAn’S CluB nIGHT OF 5000On March 2nd, the GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club will host the sixteenth annual Night of 5000 charity event.

This year’s theme, All that JAZZ, promises to be an evening to re-member. This semi-formal evening will be held at the Embassy Suites on Fowler Avenue. Guests to this

popular New Tampa community event will be invited to socialize, dine to a plated dinner, bid on live and silent auction items, have fun at the casino tables, and dance the night away.

The GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club is proud to an-nounce that one of the beneficia-ries for the Night of 5000 is the Resources in Community Hope (R.I.C.H.) House in Tampa’s Sulfur Springs neighborhood. The R.I.C.H. House was formed in 2000 and is operated by the Tampa Police Department. The main objective is to weed out the element that is holding a neighborhood back, be it criminal or economic,

and seed in elements that will allow the neighborhood to prosper and thrive. The R.I.C.H. House offers children a safe house where they can go after school to study and learn, instead of being left on the streets to be targeted by gangs. The children are encouraged to give back to the community by doing volunteer work within their neighborhood.

The ladies met at Compton Park for their annual potluck charity luncheon. This is one

of two meetings throughout the year where they welcome the spokespeople from each charity they sponsor and present them with their donations. Charlotte Hogue, Charities Chairper-son, introduced each of the groups receiving checks.

Brenda Simpson, of Oasis, a non-profit organization that works closely with the Hillsborough County School District, is in their 11th year of providing basic needs to lower income

students and their families. Brenda described the opportunities for volun-teers, which include sorting new and used clothing, toiletries and household goods. They always welcome volun-teers and donations.

Christy Raile, President of Halo Acad-emy, a co-educational private school specializing in meeting the needs of children with various disabilities, was also present. Now in their 3rd year, the school serves 17 students, offering speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy as well as meeting the students’ emotional and educational

needs. She graciously thanked TPWC for their continued support.

Carrie Burke graciously received a donation for Kids and Canines, an organization that has at-risk teens train assistance dogs for special needs chil-dren and disabled adults. As part of the Hillsborough County School District, they have been able to remarkably transform teen’s lives as well as benefit the disabled.

God’s Pedal Power Director Mike Olsen shared that the bicycle ministry is now in its 15th year. Olsen said that while the ministry was started for children, it now serves adults as well because many adults cannot afford a car. He and his wife Karen organized a bicycle repair shop and oversee the distribution operations to meet the high demand, especially during the holiday season. He said if it weren’t for the generosity of bike shop owners and clubs like the TPWC, they wouldn’t be able to help so many people.

Members of TPWC had loaded the stage behind the podium with donated

children’s toys and gifts, which will be given to needy children at Tampa Palms Elementary and Lawton Chiles Elementary Schools. Both Principal Keenan of TPE and Amy Bolt of LCE were on hand to accept the donated gifts for their lower income students. They both described the joy and de-light on the faces of the children when they receive their donated presents.

Officer Debbie was on hand to grate-fully accept a donation to the R.I.C.H. House. She described R.I.C.H. House as a “haven of last resort” for needy families. She assured the TPWC mem-bers, “You are uplifting a child and uplifting families and I thank you all.”

The new officers for 2013 will be inducted into office at an installation luncheon on January 17th at Tampa Palms Country Club.

Mayor Buckhorn celebrated the grand opening of the New Tampa Nature Park

on Monday, November 26th. The ceremony took place at the park, located at 17001 Dona Michelle Drive.

“The New Tampa Nature Park is a great, active park. Children can

explore nature and play on the zipline. The park also connects residents with miles of existing trails where they can walk, hike, and bike safely,” said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. “Our commitment to New Tampa is not just in roads and sewers, but it is embodied in our parks and playgrounds as well.”

Mayor Buckhorn Opens Park in New

Tampa

The New Tampa Nature Park connects to Hillsborough County’s Flatwoods Park trail system giving residents access to miles of trails. The park includes one-half mile long entrance road, parking for 22 cars and two buses, storm water control elements, an elevated boardwalk “nature walk” that crosses wetland habitat, a shorter elevated “marsh walk”, picnic areas, rock and rope playground climber, and a zipline play element. New Tampa Nature Park is a 122-acre parcel of land that lies east of Interstate 75 and south of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. Land for this project was acquired through assistance with the Florida Communities Trust Preservation 2000 program and the Hillsborough County Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program. Coordination between the City of Tampa and other regulatory and governmental agencies has taken place to conduct environmental management requirements, such as exotic species control, prescribed

burns, etc. This environmental management includes an adjacent 70 acre parcel owned by South West Florida Water Management District, bringing the total area of the site to almost 200 acres. The general contractor for Phase I was QGS Development, Inc. The total cost of Phase I improvements was $927,469 and was funded through the Community Investment Tax funding. v

are you sick of that extra layer of fat peeking over your pants? Do you always turn

to the side when looking in the mirror to see if your stomach is bulging? If these scenarios sound familiar, you are

among the millions of people seeking a flatter stomach. The good news is there are specific foods loaded with quality calories that can be the perfect answer to melting fat away from your mid-section permanently. Here are the top four categories of foods that melt abdominal fat.

Thermogenic foods are the ones your body uses maximum energy (in calories) to properly digest. Some of the most effective t fat burning, foods are lean proteins such as chicken, tur-key, eggs, fish and lean beef. Cayenne pepper, mustard, apple cider vinegar, cabbage, broccoli, celery, chili powder and cinnamon also have thermogenic properties that help rev up your meta-bolic engine.

The glycemic index is a tool that measures the speed of entry of a car-bohydrate into the bloodstream. In a nutshell, the higher the glycemic index rating, the more insulin is secreted in response, which can result in excess fat storage around the mid section. The categories of the glycemic index are:

high (over 70), medium (55-70) and low (up to 55). Some high glycemic index foods to avoid include white bread, white rolls, baguettes, bagels, dried dates, instant and baked mashed potatoes, instant rice, soda crackers and a variety of cereals (Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, Cheerios, puffed wheat, shredded wheat). Examples of low to medium glycemic index foods to incorporate in your diet are most vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy products, beans and lean meats.

Chronic mild to moderate dehydration can be the root cause of several health conditions such as faulty digestion, fatigue, achy joints, dry skin and inability to lose weight. The human body is comprised of about 70 per cent water. Simply put, next to air, water is the most vital substance our system needs to func-tion properly. A fast and effective way to put pressure on your metabolism, lose weight and flatten your stomach is to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of fresh, clean water per day. If you are not a water lover and drinking feels more like a chore, try to incorporate

water dense foods into your diet. Foods such as watermelon (made up of 92 per cent water), melons, celery, bok choy and soup broths are very hydrating and nourishing. In addition trying adding sliced lemons, limes or cucumbers to your water to enhance taste and for their natural astringent effect.

high fiber foods such as whole grain bread, apples, oat bran, ground flaxseed and vegetables are loaded with soluble and insoluble fiber that are beneficial for weight control and improving digestion. On average, women should aim to eat 25 grams per day while men should aim to eat 30 grams of fiber per day. Alternative grains to try are brown rice, spelt, quinoa and millet.

Of course, in addition to the food categories outlined above, regular abdominal crunches and/or Pilates will help you to strengthen your abdominal inner core making you feel taller and leaner around the mid section. v

Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel have created a $12 million endowment for the new Patel College of Global Sustainability at the University of South Florida.

Doctors Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel have donated $12 million to the University of South Florida for a new endowment to create the Patel College of Global Sustainability, ex-panding on nearly a decade of world-leading applied research to advance sustainability around the globe and improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Pending approval from university panels, the new college will elevate the work of the Patel School of Global Sustainability to a new level and build on its far-reaching portfolio of projects focused on improved urban systems, water, and transportation. The gift is the Patels’ latest contribution to the ongoing USF: Unstoppable fundrais-ing campaign.

“The Earth is God’s gift to humanity, and we believe that the current genera-tion must ensure that while meeting our present needs, we do not compro-mise the ability of future generations

to meet their needs,” the Patels said.

“The world’s rapidly depleting resourc-es and growing population require us to become more efficient and think of new ways to develop sustainable and renewable sources of clean water, energy, food, and transportation. We envision the new Patel College of Global Sustainability will deploy the intellectual capital of the University of South Florida, its professors, and students to find solutions to the chal-lenges facing our world today.” v

RVR Horse Rescue has a team of volunteers who rescue abused and neglected horses so they can rehabilitate them and find loving homes for them. RVR rescues anywhere from two to five horses a month from deplorable conditions. Horses have been rescued from small chicken coops, or a crowded room full of barbed wire. Some horses have been dumped by the side of the road, so hungry they can barely walk. Another had been chained up in a sand pit with no human or animal contact. Then there was the heart-wrenching situation last summer where starved ponies were left to die. In situations like this, RVR steps in and either rehabilitates these hurt, neglected animals or at the very least gives them love in their last moments of life, allowing these animals to die with dignity. One of the starved ponies did pass away, but his fellow ponies survived and have now been adopted to good homes.

RVR, located on a forty-acre farm in Riverview, is a place of love and trust. “I have been volunteering there since last June. I, still to this day, am amazed at how the abused, starved and neglected horses are able give so much love back to the people around them,” said Karen Pagliro. “These divine creatures have been put through so much, yet they’re some of the most grateful and affectionate animals I have ever encountered. Not only do the horses gain a positive, supportive home, but I get to bring home the love these animals share with me.”

RVR is a non-profit organization and is always in need of volunteers and donations. Please visit the RVR website and check out the story about Kimie. You will be taken on a journey of horror, hope and amazing love! www.rvrhorserescue.com

Liberty Middle School students, National Junior Honor Society, and the Future Business Leaders of America teamed up – again – to raise funds for the Calyx and Beau Schenecker Memorial Fund. Students presented an oversized $6,000 check to Col. Parker Schenecker and matching funds by Nancy Schenecker (grandmother) to benefit the fund on December 17th, in the Liberty Middle School media center.

The Calyx and Beau Schenecker Memorial Fund provides scholarships for promising leaders, athletes, and artists in the Tampa Bay area. It was established after their tragic deaths in January 2011.

a WInTer CeLeBraTIonThe Liberty Middle School Chorus kicked off the holiday season with “A Winter Celebration” on December 14, 2012. Musical selections included classics from around the world: “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah,” and “African Noel.”

The students surprised the choral director, Mr. Joseph Canessa, with a gift after the concert. “I’m so lucky to be here at Liberty Middle,” said Mr. Canessa. “My kids are extremely talented and I’m the lucky one to be working with them.”
