In a culture that has come to cherish individual rights, expression, and narcissistic preoccupation, we should not be surprised that the idea of family, the meaning of family, and the implications of family are being redefined. Ancient cultures, such as the Hebrews, gave greater weight to one’s tribal and family identity than even to one’s personal name. It was these associations that gave the greatest significance to a person’s identity. In Fiddler on the Roof, Tevye states, “Because of our traditions, everyone knows who he is and what God expects him to do.” It is this connectedness that gives a person an emotional anchor; a sense of belonging, uniqueness, and accountability. It is this connectedness that is being lost and has become detrimental to every representation of family.

The diminishment of family is not a recent phenomenon. For those who wish for the family model of the 1950’s, as if it were some golden era for marriage, it was in the mid-twentieth century when, ironically, the most dramatic changes took place in the understanding of marriage and family. The idea of an extended family was reduced to a less cumbersome version of a husband, wife, and a couple of children. Sociologists were warning us even then that this stripped-down, couple-centered version of family, and the absence of interaction with the larger extended family, would bring tremendous strain to marriages and a corresponding rise in divorce rates. These proved to be prophetic words.

When the idea of family is constantly being redefined, you will notice that it is never a growing definition with broader implications and responsibilities but, always, a reduction to the least common denominators. The tentacles of this cultural phenomenon are far reaching, impacting even what it means to be a church family. As pastor and staff, we are committed to helping families in their pursuit of understanding God’s design for family. Thus, for the coming year, 2014, our focus theme will be FAMILY: God’s

Family, Church Family, Your Family. Pray daily for your involvement, role, and responsibilities in each of these.

Advent is coming. Seriously, that’s what the word “advent” means...it means “coming.” And this idea of “coming” indicates that there is some waiting involved. For the Hebrew children, the Long-awaited One, the Messiah, was “coming.” And then He did (more about that later). For the early post-resurrection, pre-Holy Spirit church there was waiting for the coming of the “Comforter.” And then He did, and He comes, again and again, each time anyone begins the faith journey and experiences the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. For us today, the pre-return of Christ, age of the church, we continue to wait...we wait for Christ’s final return when He will make “all things new” and set everything right, back like it was when Adam and Eve walked with God “in the cool of the day.”

He has come. He continually comes. He is coming! That’s what Advent is all about. And, yet, this doesn’t seem to describe the scores of celebrations that surround this season. Often we find ourselves scurrying to buy things for people who buy us things. Or we draw someone’s name in a gift exchange and we feverishly strive to

find the very best “gift” we can for the amount of money prescribed by the exchange so that everyone will think we got the best deal and will leave the party wondering why they didn’t have the good fortune to have gotten the amazing “gift” that we brought! Or we read the ads, and see the pictures, and hear the commercials of the “most wonderful time of the year” to get the greatest, latest, best thing that we so desperately want and simply must have. We drop hints, sometimes not-so-subtle ones, about the “gift” we want/need/must have. Our expectation is that those who really love us will grant us our wish and get us the “gift” we really want.

It sounds abit...well...not very much about the celebration of the coming of the Christ-child, about the GIFT of God showered on us in the Person of His One and only Son, “full of grace and truth.” It seems that instead of remembering our celebration is about His birthday, we have turned it into a “gift” getting time for us. Instead of showering the birthday King, we have

Hope for Lubbock Cancelled Due to Inclement WeatherMany of us each month pay the bills and have money left over but there are those in our community whose money is not stretching as far these days and they have a very real need. The need represents single people and families. They vary from young adults to senior adults. None of us know what has led them to their individual situations. But we do know that as Christ followers we have a duty to help them meet their needs. Thank you First Baptist Church for your generosity to help those in our community who are having a hard time making ends meet.

Although the event Hope for Lubbock was cancelled, because of your efforts we were still able to help many in our community. Thank you for willingness to help feed those in our community. The food that was prepared was used to help feed over five hundred people at the Salvation Army. In addition we did give out over 200 meals for those in our community on Tuesday, November 26th. Thank you to all of you who helped us distribute food and clothing to our friends.

much expectation of what WE will be getting. And, the only real waiting that occurs is us waiting for the morning of the day we have chosen to unwrap the gifts WE get.

Now don’t hear me say we shouldn’t give and receive gifts in the Christmas season. Rather, I am suggesting that we take a step back and remember what (Whom) it is we say we are celebrating and let that (Him) be the highlight of the season! Here at First Baptist Church, we are going to do our best to try and remind you, even lead you to celebrate Jesus this Advent season. We will celebrate the 4 Sundays of Advent:

Page 6: December / January Magazine

Our church family completely jumps on board for one of our biggest on-campus events of the year. All the adopted dads and moms for the weekend pitch in to help in so many ways! They love our students as one of their own. They pour out their encouragement and support by graciously opening up their homes, offering their vehicles, and showering them with food as the DiscipleNow weekend takes place. They in turn receive God’s blessing as the weekend unfolds. God will do His work in their hearts and small and large decisions will be made for Him.

Our students will once again be “unplugged”, just as last year’s theme was labeled. They will give up their electronic

D

devices as they sit across from each other in bible study and as they worship together. Prayers will be lifted up and relationships will be fostered. It is in this setting that our Lord Jesus is glorified and in this setting where the body of Christ is on full display. Our focus for this year’s DiscipleNow will speak on Healthy Friendships and the wise Proverb that says, “as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (27:17). This idea only works in a true, authentic family. We can’t help but love them enough to offer this encouragement. This is something that every teenager needs and even desires. Family…church family exists best with Christ as our center.

GOD’S

I had the privilege of baptizing my daughter, Sadie, last November. This great moment happened as a result of months of ongoing conversations with her about what baptism is. As parents, we try to continually monitor what God is doing in the lives of our kids. We want God to use us to shape our kids to be used by Him.

Here is some good news – we are not alone in this effort. Our church has a desire to help families, to invest in kids while equipping and encouraging parents. Sadie is involved every week with our church’s children’s ministry; she is at Awana on Wednesday nights, the Sunday night children’s program, and Cool Kids Camp in the summer. These ministries and the people who lead them were a part of Sadie’s decision to be baptized and they will continue to play a role in her life in the years to come.

A key point here is that our church’s children’s and youth ministries are designed to reinforce what is happening at home, not to replace it. There is no substitute for the role of the parent; no ministry can come close to matching the influence of a mom and dad.

We work together to grow in our faith as adults and we work together in the faith development of our kids.

The world we live in is not a faith-friendly place. We inherited a broken world that is full of darkness and temptation and because of this we need all of the help we can get to keep our families moving in the right direction along the narrow way of Christianity. We are bombarded with the wrong kind of influence every hour of every day and this has a cumulative effect on us and our faith will slowly weaken if we are not intentional about offsetting this influence through personal devotion and corporate worship. We need all of the help we can get in strengthening our marriages and in becoming better parents, and our church stands ready to offer this help.

My kids will someday walk onto a college campus (hopefully Texas Tech!) and the authenticity of their faith will be tested. How they live when they leave home will be determined in large part by how we live in front of them while they are here. Authentic faith is both taught and caught – taught as we open the Bible at home for family prayers and as we take them to participate in our church’s children’s and youth ministries, and caught as they see and sense the love we have for God and as they see and sense this in the lives of other adults in our church.

Page 9: December / January Magazine

Our church has effective programs and passionate leadership for every stage of the journey – children, youth, and university, all the way to senior adults because we never stop needing help. We are constantly evaluating our programs in an effort to grow in our effectiveness and become a better resource for families.

As a university pastor I often get to harvest some of the fruit that was years in the making. Parents and grandparents pray over kids and live out their faith in front of them for years. Children’s ministers and VBS directors teach bible stories and songs. Youth pastors teach week after week and walk with them through the turbulent teenage years and take

them to youth camp and on mission trips, and pastors faithfully teach the Bible year after year. Years of investment - countless prayers, Bible stories, songs, and teaching moments that are planted into the hearts and minds of kids and youth often begin to bear fruit during the university chapter of their journey. This is a special and exciting time as truth gets activated and dormant seeds that have hibernated for years begin to blossom and bear fruit.

A part of our church’s vision for university ministry is to keep them connected to the church during this vital time in their faith development. Our goal is not to provide religious entertainment for them while they are in college but rather mobilize them to be on mission while they are in college and to produce fully

devoted, lifelong followers of Christ. YOU are a critical part of seeing this vision become a reality. The first thing you can do is to continue to invest in the lives of the kids that have been entrusted to you. You might be a parent and need encouragement to keep going, even when it seems like your prayers are bouncing off of the ceiling, even when your teenager throws the truth back in your face – keep going, don’t give up! So much of what happens in our university ministry was determined a decade ago by the parents and grandparents of the students that are now freshmen. Another thing you can do is to never stop praying. As a matter of fact, pray even more for your child as they leave home and go to college because their faith is being tested and you can provide some long distance air support in the battle they are fighting through your fervent prayers. A lot of what happens in our university ministry is the result of praying parents, grandparents, and churches back home. Finally, you can continue to tithe in order to support the ministries of our church. First Baptist Lubbock has the most effective church-based university ministry in the country for several reasons: 1) Our pastor and staff believe in it. 2) We have a team of passionate and dedicated adult volunteers.3) We allocate significant resources towards this ministry. Many churches say they want a university ministry but few, if any, back that up in their budgets like First Lubbock does, and we are allowed to allocate these ministry dollars because of your giving.

Let’s continue to work together as a family – God’s family, Church family, and your family.

Precept – Ezekiel Part 2Tuesday mornings at 9:30am in 302(begins January 21)

When was the last time that you stopped what you were doing and saw greater value in someone other than yourself? Stop and look around, needs are represented each day in whatever setting you find yourself in.

Taking the time to meet needs is a scary thought. If you have never taken the time to serve someone else, this edition of the Connect offers opportunities for you to begin the journey of “living a missional life.”

SAVE A LIFE

In March of 2012 First Baptist began participating in the Save A Life Ministry. This ministry is a mentorship program where an inmate is selected by the chaplain of the Lubbock County Correctional facility and a church comes alongside that inmate while they are incarcerated and disciples that inmate in preparation for the day of their release. For over nine months 6 men from our church have faithfully met with Brent to encourage, challenge, pray and seek the Lord weekly. One group of guys meet on Wednesday night and another group meet on Thursday morning. We have seen Brent make significant progress in not only accepting responsibility for his actions but in seeing his time in prision as an opportunity for God to use him to make a difference in the lives of others. David Rowen, one of the men working with Brent, shared that Brent mentioned one encounter with an inmate located near him as they go to bed at night. The

inmates are rather rowdy and make inappropriate comments to one another and Brent has been hearing this go on for some time. He said he was somewhat rude to the man and wanted him to stop as the man was trying to be accepted into the Save a Life Program. Brent said he could have been nicer about it. I am rather proud of Brent in his insight (even though it was post-intervention). It is obvious that God is moving in his life, otherwise he would not have had the conviction. The intervention was successful as the man told others he was not participating in that kind of talk anymore, and eventually led another man to say the same thing to a different person. God is indeed moving. Please pray for this ministry as we prepare for Brent’s release and for the men who go on a weekly basis to the prison.

ON THE MOVE TO BETHLEHEM:During December, our Children’s Ministry, during Sunday School each week, will experience and participate in the journey to Bethlehem, as well as what happens after Bethlehem. Our leadership in each classroom prepares fun “hands-on” activities, a 3rd grade “puppet presentation”, a “market street with Roman soldiers”, and unique decorations that is a great visual for this journey. It is such a fun learning experience for our children and something all of us anticipate each year!

Come early so your children won’t miss a single second during this month! We are EXCITED to witness the eyes of our children light up with the understanding of the wonderful “GIFT” of Christmas and how we can have this gift forever!

When you think of Family Dedication you recall all of those precious little babies in their beautiful new clothes being held by their very proud parents, but family dedication is much more than that. Family Dedication is a daily choice.

In our Family Dedication class we talk about the importance of living out our faith at home. Home is where our children learn what it means to be an everyday Christian, not just what one looks like at Sunday School. The average child spends more than 3,000 hours with their parents every year but only 40 hours a year at church so living your faith at home is imperative.

Deuteronomy 6 makes it very clear about teaching our children how to live a Christ centered life. This verse it the crux of our Family Dedication class.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (NIV)

Not only is living your faith at home important, it is commanded in verses 7-9. Making that daily choice to teach your children how to love God with all your heart, soul and strength is up to you, but you are not alone in your daily struggles.

As a church family, we are here to support you. Take advantage of our classes we offer, get your children involved in activities in addition to Sunday School. And even if your precious little one is much bigger now, feel free to join us for one of our family dedication classes just as a refresher. We will have 3 classes this spring and each is on a Sunday Night from 5-7pm. Feel free to contact me any time with questions.([email protected])

The Awana program available to families with children in our church, not only encourages students to memorize God’s word, but to truly understand what the verses in the Bible are saying. To complete one of the extra credit tasks in his book, Luke Dufilho, a fifth grader in the program, was challenged to take on Psalm 148. He was asked to read this song of praise to God and make a banner using different materials to create it.

Luke used the words “Praise the Lord” and chose a different medium for each letter to represent some of the creatures that the Psalmist calls on to praise Him. He used blue paper for the skies, glitter for His angels, and camouflage duct tape for the armies of heaven. Gold star stickers

represented the twinkling stars, fish stickers for the creatures of the ocean depths, and he took a match to the letter ‘e’ to represent fire. Luke depicted the snow and clouds with snowflakes and cotton balls and used dirt to symbolize the mountains and hills. He glued twigs on his banner for the fruit trees and cedars and feathers for the birds that are to praise Him. Lastly, he used rhinestones to represent the kings and rulers of the earth and he used eyes for all people – young men and young women, old men and children.

By completing this project, Luke was able to learn that the entire world and everything in it was meant to praise the Lord. We are grateful for students who desire to know and understand the Word of God. And we are grateful to parents who work together with their children helping them learn how to hide God’s Word in their hearts!
