AquaticsAmerican Red Cross - Water Safety Guide

A recent American Red Cross survey* shows that almost half the adults surveyed on water safety say they’ve had an experience where they nearly drowned, and one in four know someone who has drowned. While over 90% of families with young children will be in the water at some point this summer, almost half (48%) plan to swim in a place with no lifeguard. With so many planning to be in, on or near the water, it is im-portant to follow the basics of water safety, maintain constant supervision of children and to get trained!

PRACTICE WATER SAFETY

• Swim in designated areas super-vised by lifeguards.

• Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.

• Ensure that everyone in the fam-ily learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate Red Cross water orientation and Learn-to-Swim courses.

• Never leave a young child unat-tended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask per-mission to go near water.

• Have young children or inex-perienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.

MAINTAIN CONSTANT SUPERVISION• If you have a pool, secure it with

appropriate barriers—many chil-dren who drown in home pools were out of sight for less than 5 minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time.

TennisSummer Tennis/Out-door TipFrom Claudette Laliberte – Tampa Palms Head Tennis Professional

Summer time is here and the Tampa heat and humidity is rising! And, for some of us, this is a remindeer that we are not 25 anymore, and, our bodies are not as resilient as we used to be. When you are out on the courts this summer remember these tips: Stay appropriatetly hydrated. If you are outside for just an hour, water should be enough. Over and hour, you’ll need to have some sort of replenishment of electrolytes.

A good rule of thumb is to supple-ment water with a sports drink; one part sports drink to three parts water. Avoid caffeine as well. Eat properly.

I see a lot of poor posture with average golfers. If your feet are too far apart, you can’t shift your weight very well. Feet too close together, you lose your balance. legs too straight, you can’t move at all. I can usually predict when higher-handicappers are going to hit a good shot. Their posture is relaxed but athletic, and posture pretty much dictates how you’ll hit the ball.

you want to be on the balls of your feet -- not the heels,

not the toes. That’s the key to balance. No good athletes in any sport play with their weight back on their heels. It’s important that you start with your weight on the balls of your feet and keep it there through impact. you can eas-ily check your set-up position in a full-length mirror.

Make good posture a habit by keeping these images in mind, and your consistency will improve.

Freedom High School incoming Senior Mi-chael Brittingham III is known for his ath-letic prowess on the field and was invited to

participate in the Blue-Grey – Southeast Football Combine held on May 22nd 2011 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. There, he placed among the top 5%, and because of his outstanding performance, Brittingham III was selected to join 200 elite prospects from previous combines from 36 States to be showcased at the NFL Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton Ohio.

This Combine will also serve as a pool to select a North and South squad to compete in the First Annual Blue-Grey All Star Game. This televised game will be played at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on January 14th 2012. Super Combine prospects will com-prise 75% of each team.

At 6’ 2” and 225 lbs., Brittingham III currently plays on the Offensive Line, Defensive Line, and Special Teams. He is currently making the transi-tion to Fullback. During the Southeast Combine, he had the fasted 40 time among Fullbacks and the second fastest time amongst Defensive Lineman, 4.8 seconds. He also finished at or near the top of his position group with outstanding performances in the 20 yard shuttle (4.4 seconds), broad Jump (7’7”), Vertical Leap (25) and Bench (15)

During the 2010 season, Brittingham III was involved on plays on Offense, Defense, and Special teams and was known for blocking opposing play-ers “out of the picture” and is looking forward to a very Productive 2011 season.

We wish him the Best of Luck as he competes on a National Level. His ability to travel is thanks, in part to Blue Sky Multiservices, Bacchus Event

Solutions Foundation, Refresh Interiors, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay, MB2 Productions, and several friends and family who all will be there to support him in January. v

Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) is seeking Tampa Palms

residents to be troop leaders for Tampa Palms girls. Both men and women over age 18, to volunteer as positive adult role models. Troop leaders facilitate activities meeting the contemporary needs of girls, and make a lasting impact by helping build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

GSWCF works in close partnership with troop leaders to deliver the information and support needed to help girls unleash their potential. As part of its commitment, GSWCF offers a flexible schedule of in-person and online trainings for all troop leaders, assisting them in developing their skills and learning about the Girl Scout program. By completing all required training this summer, leaders can have a troop as early as this fall!

In addition to troop leaders, GSWCF is seeking volunteers to fill a variety of other positions. Volunteers are needed to work behind the scenes to support troop leaders, or to train other volunteers. Volunteers are also needed to work directly with girls as event directors or program facilitators at local Girl Scout camps. The possibilities are endless! No matter the position, Girl Scout volunteers gain valuable job experience, hone leadership skills, participate in their community and, ultimately empower and inspire girls. v

For more information on volunteering with gswCF, visit www.gswcf.org. For specific questions contact kristie wiley: (813) 262-1765 or [email protected].

T ampa Palms resident Emma Hopegood is ready to per-form as the Tampa Bay

Water Ski Show Team begins their annual Summer Series of shows fea-turing a different theme every week throughout the summer. Emma is the daughter of Christine and Jonathan Hopegood. She joined the competitive show ski team in 2009 and set out to develop the skills needed to appear in their weekly Sat-urday shows. “The first time I saw a show I immediately thought ‘I am doing this!’” she explains. She picked up membership forms that evening and the rest is history.

Last year, Emma competed in the Southern Regional Show Team com-petition in Alabama as an individual in the swivel 180/14 and under cat-egory and she captured third place in that event. In that competition, the TBWSST picked up the first place trophy as a show team for the eighth year in a row. She then competed in the Sunshine State Tournament in Sarasota and placed second in the Swivel 180/15 and older category.

When asked what she likes best about her experiences with the team, Emma finds it hard to narrow down. “I couldn’t pick just one thing! I love everything about being part of this team, from site maintenance to skiing in our Saturday shows.”

For mom Christine, Emma’s involve-ment in the sport of show skiing has many benefits. “She has and continues to learn the obvious skills of skiing and showmanship. But of equal, if not more importance, she is learning about commitment, hard work, supporting teammates and leaders and that each individual’s contribution is of value.” She adds, “Emma is eager and willing to help with dock work, site work days and other chores. I am so proud of her for embracing that kind of attitude!”

Emma performs with her team each Saturday evening at 6:00 pm at their home site on Burbank Road in Oldsmar. All shows are free to the public. For directions to the site visit their website at www.tampawaterski.com. v

My husband and I were golfing early one morning when a

man rushed up to us in his golf cart and asked for a favor. We thought he wanted to hurry in front of us, as he usually does. When he caught up with us he asked if we ever sign our son’s books. I was so dumbfounded that I didn’t answer which is not my usual persona! After my husband eventually said yes, the man ran to his golf bag and took out the two books and asked us to sign them. He said he saw the article in Palms Magazine and ordered the books. We were so thrilled, we didn’t think he even knew our names! The cart barn manager said we made that man so happy! We said, no, he made US so happy.

Anyway, thanks again Cindi. I hope others will follow suit and order the books. The Victim and The Mistress of Deception by David P. Mercadante It makes us so pleased. Maybe you will too?!

Every year Floridians are faced with the possibility of hurricanes.

Most years these dreaded storms do not land on our shores and mainland. However, in the not too distant past hurricanes have had devastating effects on many communities in Florida and every year the possibility exists that communities will be hit during the summer and fall months.

During the months of potential hurricanes, it is important to plan for the worst and hope that it never happens. For example, you and your family may be asked to leave your home due to some emergency conditions in your community. Your local emergency officials will not ask you to leave your home or location unless there is a valid reason. Do not try and second-guess the validity

of their request. Do as they say immediately. Most of the time these requests and related information will come through radio broadcasts or the local TV station. Different warning methods may be used such as a siren or telephone calls.

Stay tuned and follow the directions and the evacuation routes recommended by the emergency officials. The most important thing to keep in mind is to have a plan for a possible evacuation. Be prepared to evacuate and keep the following suggestions in mind.

1. Know the route and follow directions. Keep a map on

hand that will enable you to take a route that may be unfamiliar to you. Be prepared to use routes specified by the emergency officials. Do not use any road or shortcut that they do not recommend. Some areas familiar to you may no longer be accessible or they may be dangerous for reasons unknown to you.

2. Local authorities will tell you what to do. Stay in touch with

local authorities. They are in touch with the state or federal authorities and will know which route to take and what local conditions might be. If you follow their instructions, you are more likely to arrive in a safe location and to be able to communicate with your family members or friends.

3. Keep your vehicle’s tank filled. Gas stations may be closed

during a hurricane and prior to its arrival. During power outages, fuel pumps at gas stations may not work. Prepare for the hurricane by filling your tank well in advance of the storm.

4. One vehicle per household. If it is necessary to evacuate,

plan to take one vehicle per household. This will keep family members together and reduce the number of cars on yourparticular evacuation route.

Continued next issue.
