SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM PRAYER INPARISHES

Along with other bishops in the USA, BishopScharfenberger has noted that a number of people haveasked about parishes adopting the practice of recitingthe rosary concluding with the Prayer to St. Michaelthe Archangel. He wrote about this in an article in “theEvangelist” published on Thursday, 4th October. Fur-thermore, in a statement on 29th September 2018 (theFeast Day of the Archangels), Pope Francis had askedall Catholics to pray the rosary daily during the monthof October, asking Mary and St. Michael the Archan-gel to intercede for the protection of the Church in amoment of “spiritual turbulence.”

Pope Francis stated that prayer “is the weaponagainst the Great Accuser who ‘goes around the worldseeking to accuse.’ Only prayer can defeat him…TheRussian mystics and the great saints of all the tradi-tions advised, in moments of spiritual turbulence, toshelter beneath the mantle of the Holy Mother of God.”The statement also encouraged the use of the prayer ofSub Tuum Praesidium.

In the light of these developments, BishopScharfenberger has encouraged parishes, families andindividuals to adopt these devotions and prayers asseems best in local or personal circumstances. Doingthis would also provide an opportunity for some cate-chesis about these prayers and devotions. He also notesthat many parishes and families or individuals alreadyfollow this practice (as we do in our own parish!).

The St. Michael Prayer is also known as theLeonine Prayer. It was introduced in 1884, when PopeLeo XIII ordered certain prayers to be said at the endof the Low Mass, in defense of the independence of theHoly See. In 1929 the Pope’s independence seemedmore secure and so Pope Pius XI decreed that the in-tention for which these prayers should be offered was“to permit tranquility and freedom to profess the faithto be restored to the afflicted people of Russia.” Thepractice of reciting this and the other Leonine prayersafter Mass officially ended in March 1965 with the re-forms of the Second Vatican Council.

Thirty years later in his Regina Caeli Addresson Sunday 24 April 1994, Pope Saint John Paul II rec-ommended its use as a prayer for spiritual battle andprotection, especially in times of distress, turbulenceand uncertainty. He said: “May prayer strengthen us

for the spiritual battle that the Letter to the Ephesiansspeaks of: 'Be strong in the Lord and in the strength ofhis might' (Ephesians 6:10). The Book of Revelationrefers to this same battle, recalling before our eyes theimage of St Michael the Archangel (Revelation 12:7).Pope Leo XIII certainly had this picture in mind when,at the end of the last century, he brought in, throughoutthe Church, a special prayer to St Michael. Althoughthis prayer is no longer recited, I ask everyone not toforget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battleagainst the forces of darkness and against the spirit ofthis world.”

The Sub Tuum Praesidium Prayer is probablythe oldest prayer that we have that addresses ourBlessed Mother. A copy of the prayer has been found,for example, on a third century papyrus scroll fromEgypt. Like most prayers, it asks for the protection ofour Blessed Mother, most especially in times of diffi-culty or turmoil.

In our parish, the rosary is usually prayed be-fore the weekday Masses and is concluded with the St.Michael Prayer. Following the request of the Bishop,we are now praying the St. Michael Prayer after allweekend Masses immediately following the dismissaland before the recessional hymn. The Saint MichaelPrayer along with the Sub Tuum Praesidium Prayer canbe found at the back of our new red Mass books(located in the pews).

St. Michael the Archangel Prayer:Saint Michael Archangel, defend us in battle,

be our protection against the wickedness and snares ofthe devil;

may God rebuke him, we humbly pray;and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the

power of God,cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits

who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls.Amen.

Sub Tuum Praesidium Prayer:We fly to Thy protection, O Holy Mother of God.

Do not despise our petitions in our necessities,but deliver us always from all dangers,O Glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen.

Andrew was St. Peter’s brother, andwas called with him. “As Jesus was walkingby the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,Simon who is now called Peter, and hisbrother Andrew, casting a net into the sea;they were fishermen. He said to them,‘Come after me, and I will make you fishersof men.’ At once they left their nets and fol-lowed him” (Matthew 4:18-20).

Before the multiplication of loaves, itwas Andrew who spoke up about the boywho had the barley loaves and fishes.
