DearFriends, AngerisanemoWonweallknowwell. Weknow,toothatitcantakemanydifferentforms. SomeWmes,wedeeplyregretwhatwehavesaidanddoneinanger.Sowemaygoandapologizetoourfriend,spouse,orchild. But there is another kind of anger that leads us to construcWve words and acWons. This may occur when wesincerelybelieve intherightnessofwhatwestandfor,andweverymuchwanttheotherpersontoat leastseeandhearwhatweare saying, and they resistus. This anger, then, rightly sWmulatesus toemphasizeand responsiblyhold toourposiWonallthemorefirmly. This is theangerwerecall JesusfeelingandcommunicaWngatnumerousWmes. Easily,mostofusrememberthemoneychangers intheTemple, forexample. Wecaneasilyrecognizethissameangerwithinthe intensestoryJesustellshere.Inthelinesjustbeforetoday’sGospelReading,LuketellsusthatsomeofthePhariseeshadbeenlaughingatJesusandallhewastryingtoteachthem.Jesushadbeenstrugglingtoreachthesemenandgaintheirunderstanding.Butanumberofthemonlysneered.TheyresistedhearingwhatJesushadtosaybecauseitwassocontrarytotheirownviewoflife. So,inaburstofconstrucWveanger,Jesustellsthemthestrongstorywejustheardtoday.Jesuswantsto“catch”andimpressonthemhowdangeroustheiradtudeis;howself-defeaWngaretheirsneersandtheirlaughing.HewantsthemtorealizethattheyhavetotrulyandrespecgullylistentothepeoplethatGodhassentthem.Theywouldhavetostopaskingforspecialmiracles,astheyweredoing,almost inthemoodofpeopleviewingamagicact. Bythistheywere losingthevaluablemessagethatJesus,andanyotherrepresentaWveofGod,wastheretoconvey. TrusWngfaithwouldbetheonlymoodinwhichtohearthetruth. SoJesusendshisstorywiththeexampleofAbrahamdeclaring,“IftheywillnotlistentoMosesandtheprophets,neitherwilltheybepersuadedifsomeoneshouldrisefromthedead.”Statedanotherway,thosewho are resistant toGod’sword as conveyed by his representaWves,will conWnue to be resistant! Truly, even a special“magicact”won’tchangethem.Theonlyrealchangemustcomefromwithin! Thisistrueforus,too! Iamalwaysso“shocked”whenpeopletellmethatthey’rewaiWngfora“sign.” SomethingbiggerandbeUerthanthatwhichthey’veseenbefore. Sooienwewantaspecialemissaryordivinemagicormiracletosuddenlyconvinceus. But,wehavethesameagentsfromGod,symbolizedbyMosesandtheProphets,inourlivesasthepeopleJesuswasaddressing. Theyconveyandoffertousthesamemessagethatwasofferedtothepeopleofold. Godiswithus,amongusandI’llnotbelieveorhearanythingelse!

Sport Equipment Collection for Detroit Police Athletic League One of our Mercy in Action Day activities on October 1 is to sort donated new and gently used sporting equipment for the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL). They will be distributing the items to Detroit teams and kids in need of equipment. We will accept new or gently used equipment until September 30. On October 1, our volunteers will sort the items and package them up for delivery to PAL. What a great way to recycle your equipment and clean out your closets!

Today, we celebrate the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our gospel passage from Luke begins with “Jesus said to the Pharisees: ‘There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen…” Did you ever wonder why Luke took the time to tell us the color of the man’s garments? The mentioning of the color that the man is wearing is more than an interesting detail. Luke begins to set the stage for the rest of the parable. Luke goes to great lengths to make sure his hearers and readers understand the contrast between the lives of the two men. In the ancient world, purple cloth was only worn by the very rich—usually those who belonged to the royal class. The dye to make the natural color fabric become purple was very expensive. We see the wealth of the first man in the manner of his dress, in the style of his home, and in the description of how the man ate. We understand even in these few verses that the man lived a life of luxury each day. By contrast, the poor man, Lazarus was destitute. He lay begging at the gates of the rich man hoping that he would get the crumbs that fell from the table. We are told that his physical condition is so awful that the dog licks the man’s wounds. By the fact that the man was at the gate, inside the city, we know he was not a leper.
We need to be careful that we don’t leave with the impression that Lazarus is rewarded because he has suffered much in his life or that the rich man is in the netherworld because he had great prosperity in this earthly life. Dianne Bergant, explains that the answer is found in the understanding of the covenant relationship. “Both men are somehow associated with Abraham and therefore belong to the people of Israel.” We know they were both bound together by the covenant relationship set forth through Moses because it was continually stated through the words of the prophets. In this covenant relationship, the rich have a responsibility to care for the poor, the orphaned and the widows. The rich man not only didn’t help Lazarus, he was completely indifferent to him. He was so absorbed in his own life that he didn’t even notice Lazarus sitting at the gate to his lavish home. The parable is about the attitude of the rich man not his wealth. We may not have people literally sitting at our gates. But are there people in your life who you fail to notice? Are there people you walk right past without taking a second look? What is your attitude about those who are poor? What do you need to do for yourself to insure that you do not become complacent to the suffering and poverty of others?

CLOW: Children’s Liturgy of the Word This wonderful opportunity, for children ages five through
second grade, to hear the gospel and break it open in ways that help them to relate it to their own lives has returned to the 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Masses. Participants will be lead to their own area immediately following the opening prayer of the Mass and will return after the Prayer of the Faithful. Parents are always welcome to accompany their child. There is no registration or tuition fee for the Children's Liturgy of the Word.
Prayers for the Upcoming Synod The purpose of Synod 16 is to look at how to make our
parishes, schools and families more missionary based. But when speaking of missionaries most would think of those who go overseas to serve the poor and vulnerable. Few of us would think of our own neighborhoods as places of mission.
Alan Briggs of Way-FM has the following advice as to how you can become a missionary right were God has placed you (http://www.wayfm.com): • "Choose to trust that God has placed you. In order to love those
around you, you will have to trust that you aren’t there by accident. God has placed you for a reason. Many people feel lost in their own lives and cities. Instagram convinces us to live somewhere more glorious, and Facebook convinces us to be someone more remarkable. We need to wake up each day ready to hand our restlessness back to God.
• Choose to invest in those around you. You also have neighbors and co-workers just a few steps away. Staying present with those around you takes a series of small choices. Will you invite these people into your parties? Will you be available to interact with others in proximity to you?
• You can’t go everywhere, join every cause, share Jesus with everyone, or fight every injustice. Here’s the good news: you can choose to be present and available, to be the salty and luminous expression Jesus charged his people to be."
Keep the Synod, which will take place November 18-20, our Archbishop and all participants in your prayers. Ask the Holy
Spirit to guide them as they determine how we will continue to be Church right here and now. Ask that he assist all of us in discovering our missionary Spirit and trust that we have been chosen to do his work!

Campus Ministry The blessing and dedication of the newly renovated Wayne State Newman Catholic Center will take place at 4:00 p.m., this Thursday, September 29. Archbishop Allen Vigneron will preside over the prayer service. Students of the Detroit university participate in campus ministry at the Newman Catholic Center, which offers weekday and Sunday Masses, as well as a popular weekly “upper room” event. Students can also participate in faith studies, a rosary group, social activities, and events like retreats and the Life in the Spirit seminar. Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the archdiocesan Office of Young Adults and Campus Ministry to coordinate campus ministries at colleges and universities throughout our Archdiocese. The office helps form communities of faith on campuses and sponsors activities and programs for students. THE VOTES ARE IN! A special Thank You to all of the parishioners who voiced their opinion by voting on their preferred Mass time on Saturday evenings. We tallied the nearly 220 votes and the winner with over 46% of the total vote is…5:00 p.m.! Second place was 4:00 p.m. and third place was 4:30 p.m.
