I’m the New Guy

Msgr. Perry invited me to introduce myself by means of this bulletin article and I am glad to have

the opportunity. You will have seen my full name and title printed Fr. Gregory A. Mathias, but I

welcome you to refer to me simply as Fr. Greg. And, of course, the title “Father” is an expression

of our faith in the Sacrament of Holy Orders and not something I bear in any paternalistic way, (in

the negative sense).

With the issue of what to call me out of the way, I offer a little background: I am originally from

the extreme western part of the Diocese of Fall River, the Town of Seekonk on the Rhode Island

Border. I think of myself as having dual citizenship in the Bay State and the Ocean State, (though I

prefer my chowder white). I am a product of public schools and I never served as an altar-server.

But we did attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The “we” I

refer to was my father, mother and sister. As you may know, my father just passed from this life in

June and my newly-widowed mother remains in her home in Seekonk. My sister, Lynn, lives in

Connecticut with her Husband, (the three kids are virtually on their own with careers and so forth).

Since it was not clear to me as to what I would do with my life upon High School Graduation, I

applied to Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay based on some fantasy that I might

parlay that education into a Naval Aviation career. Instead of becoming a pilot of jet aircraft I

ended up going into the seminary to become, what one of my former maritime instructors referred

to as, a “sky pilot,” . . .a Merchant Marine term for priest or preacher, I suppose. I did acquire a

B.S. in Marine Transportation and a Third Mate’s License in 1986. But, the call to the priesthood,

which had haunted me since late High School, grew ever stronger through the college years. I

entered St. John’s Seminary in Boston, and I was ordained in 1991.

My first priestly assignment was at Corpus Christi in Sandwich with, then, Fr. George Coleman.

At that time, I became acquainted with the two priests named Fr. John Perry serving together in this

parish, (It was amusing to me that they had put two guys with the very same name in the same

parish.) I was at Corpus Christi for five years and then transferred to the Attleboro area. More

recently I served as the Chaplain at Cape Cod Hospital for six years, residing at Christ the King in

Mashpee, (What a horrible commute that was!). I acquired an advanced theology degree in

Washington DC at the Pope John Paul Institute for Marriage and Family in 2005, and then I

became the pastor of St. Julie Billiart in Dartmouth that same year. And, for the last nine years, I

have been the pastor of St. John Neumann in Freetown. From there I come to you with my dog

“Pretzel,” who is a very good boy!

I am truly happy to become part of your community and to serve as your pastor. Change is difficult

for all of us and I will do my best to make it as painless as possible for you. I wish I could tell you

that I have come with answers to the problems which plague the Church and the world, but I do

not. My hope is in the Lord: I pray His Holy Wisdom guide me and that the graces of the

Sacraments will sustain and strengthen all of us as we continue our pilgrimage together toward the

“fullness of life” which is Jesus’ promise to us.

Fr. Greg

Second Reading Eph 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32

Brothers and sisters:

Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for

Christ. Wives should be subordinate to their husbands

as to the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife

just as Christ is head of the church, he himself the

savior of the body. As the church is subordinate to

Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husbands

in everything Husbands, love your wives, even as

Christ loved the church and handed himself over for her

to sanctify her, cleansing her by the bath of water with

the word, that he might present to himself the church in

splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,

that she might be holy and without blemish.

So also husbands should love their wives as their own

bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

For no one hates his own flesh

but rather nourishes and cherishes it,

even as Christ does the church,

because we are members of his body.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his

mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall

become one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak

in reference to Christ and the church.

First Reading Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b

Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at

Shechem, summoning their elders, their leaders,

their judges, and their officers.

When they stood in ranks before God, Joshua addressed

all the people:

“If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide

today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served

beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose

country you are now dwelling. As for me and my

household, we will serve the LORD.”

But the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake

the LORD for the service of other gods. For it was the

LORD, our God, who brought us and our fathers up out

of the land of Egypt, out of a state of slavery.

He performed those great miracles before our very eyes

and protected us along our entire journey and among the

peoples through whom we passed. Therefore we also

will serve the LORD, for he is our God.”

Responsorial Psalm

Refrain: Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Gospel Jn 6:60-69

Many of Jesus’ disciples who were listening said,

“This saying is hard; who can accept it?”

Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring

about this,

he said to them, “Does this shock you?

What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending

to where he was before?

It is the spirit that gives life,

while the flesh is of no avail.

The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.

But there are some of you who do not believe.”

Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not

believe

and the one who would betray him.

And he said,

“For this reason I have told you that no one can come to

me

unless it is granted him by my Father.”

As a result of this,

many of his disciples returned to their former way of life

and no longer accompanied him.

Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to

leave?”

Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we

go?

You have the words of eternal life.

We have come to believe

and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”

Verse

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life;

you have the words of everlasting life

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Who do you serve?

Songwriter Bob Dylan had a come-to-Jesus moment in

1978 in a hotel room in Tucson, Arizona. More

accurately, it seemed like Jesus came to him, as he felt

“a presence in the room that couldn’t have been

anybody but Jesus.” For four years, Dylan wrote songs

critics panned as "God-awful gospel," and fans

mourned the loss of what they'd come to expect from

him. By 1981, Dylan had returned to his Jewish and

folk-rock roots. Yet he never retracted his vision:

"Well, it may be the devil, or it may be the Lord, but

you gotta serve somebody." The choice remains ours.

"If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide

today whom you will serve."

MEMORIAL OF ROSE OF LIMA, VIRGIN

Family finesse

Parents have expectations of their kids, and kids want to

make their own choices—it’s part of the painful

growing-up process. Rose of Lima was like a lot of

teenagers who clashed with her parents about her

future, and she was like a lot of saints who rankled

family by refusing to marry. They never let her join a

convent, but they didn’t force her to wed either, finally

relenting to her choice of chastity. She lived out her

brief life as she had wished, in prayer and penance. She

is the patron saint of family problems. Everyone has

them, so ask Rose for help.

“One who swears by heaven swears by the throne of

God.”

FEAST OF BARTHOLOMEW, APOSTLE

Play a stirring role

Bartholomew, also called Nathanael, was one of the

original 12 apostles and later, a traveling missionary.

He embodied what it means to become a missionary

disciple—one who, upon being led to Jesus, wishes to

lead others to him, too. As the U.S. bishops say in Go

and Make Disciples, Jesus “gave the Church the

unending task of evangelizing as a restless power, to

stir and to stimulate.” Where can you stir interest in

Jesus today?

“Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of

Israel.”

The past is present

Today, we are becoming aware of the deep truth that

wrongs committed in the past, even generations ago,

can still perpetuate evil. Such is the sin of racism,

which the U.S. Catholic Bishops have repeatedly called

“an evil which endures in our society and in our

Church” (and Sisters to Us). Each of us is called to help

dismantle racism, to reject profiting from the

oppression of others, and to listen to the voices of those

who have been silenced too long—for the sake of our

past, present, and future.

“You are like whitewashed tombs.”

Be alert!

Wakefulness is a term often used in spiritual writing. In

today’s gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, “Stay awake!

You do not know on which day your Lord will come.”

The of the Catholic Church contains at least 20

references to being awake, usually in regard to

“awakening faith.” The church wants its members to be

vigilant and tells us in the catechism that the “Holy

Spirit constantly seeks to awaken us to keep watch!”

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you awaken to God’s

presence today.

“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Stay awake!’”

MEMORIAL OF MONICA

Hang in there

Sometimes it feels like all of our small choices and

actions will never amount to anything. Go big or go

home, we’re told. Yet the stuff of transformation,

healing, and love is knitted together one small thing at

a time. Our call is to have faith and persist. Take a look

at Saint Monica, a laywoman from North Africa, who

day in and day out offered “small” acts of kindness,

love, and care for her beloved yet wayward son

Augustine. She never tired of believing in him, even

storming heaven on his behalf. Persisting in the small

things that are good, beautiful, and true can make a big

difference. What small things are you called to persist

in? “Stay awake.”

MEMORIAL OF AUGUSTINE, BISHOP,

DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

Let happiness be your song

Like all larger-than-life historical figures, Saint

Augustine and his legacy are subject to debate. Some

find in his vast work reason to take a pessimistic view

of humanity. But he was quite life-affirming in his

conviction that the happiness found in following God is

indeed the only worthy and lasting happiness. “Happy

is [the one] who has God,” he succinctly put it. To

“have” God for Augustine meant to love God, citing

Psalm 72: “For me it is good to cling to God.” Or, as

Pharrell Williams put it in his blockbuster song

“Happy” a few years back, “Clap along if you feel like

happiness is the truth.”

“You yourselves have been taught by God to love one

another.”

The Green Team

Dehydration occurs frequently during the hot

season. A glass of water is the solution for

keeping the body adequately hydrated.

However, avoid wasting water. Make sure that there are

no taps which are left on after use.

Fix all leakages as well. Any leftover water should not

be poured away. It should be put to other use like

watering of plants for instance.

Water is a valuable resource, moreso now with changes

in weather patterns. Fresh water reserves have been

dwindling, with the droughts becoming more biting in

some parts of the country. Source: The Greener Ideal
