13th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018
Recently, my wife and I had the opportunity to see the movie: Pope Francis: A Man of His Word. In it, Our
Holy Father reminds us of the same thing we hear in our readings this Sunday and that is 'the preciousness
and sanctity of all life.'
The movie combines the life of St. Francis, the environmental encyclical Laudato si', and the words of
Pope Francis. It blends them together into a very beautiful story and I hope all of you have an opportunity to
see it. One of the things that stood out in my mind were his words: “Everything is related and we human
beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage, woven together by the love God has for
each of his creatures and which also unites us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river
and mother earth.”
Unfortunately, all human being since 'the fall of our first parents Adam and Eve and original sin,' and
the distorted notion that humans were created to exploit at will our planet and its resources has landed us in
trouble ecologically and well as spiritually. This has been particularly destructive since the beginning of the
Industrial Revolution where for the first time in our planets history decisions made by human beings has had
devastating consequences where our world is headed into a frontier never before experienced by life. Run
away green house gases, catastrophic water pollution with areas in our oceans so polluted with plastic that it
is choking off all sea life, and rising global and oceanic temperatures resulting in the extinction of numerous
species are just a few examples I can leave in this limited space.
As dire as some of these monumental problems seem, the Good News is we have a loving God
whose heart, mind and whose depth we can never begin to fathom and whose love, mercy and brilliance are
constantly watching over us like a loving parent.
And through that great love, He has encouraged some of our world's greatest minds including
scientist, philosophers, theologians, including our Pope to ponder the pertinent direction we humans must
take, in a cosmological sense, if we want our grandchildren and future generations to be able to have a quality
of life worth living. We need a new story for our journey of recovery and one that incorporates conservation
and preservation as it's themes.
One that the Paulist priest, Father Thomas Berry, who was one of the founding voices on this problem
to write in his book “The Dream of the Earth” : “A sensitivity that comprehends the larger patterns of nature,
its severe demands as well as its delightful aspects,” and one that “is willing to see the human diminish so that
other life forms might flourish.”
What's our part in this? In a review I read of the Popes movie by Rita Ferrone on Pray Tell summed it
up perfectly. She wrote: “Early in the film, there is a scene of the piazza at Assisi, with a voice over by the
director talking about the passage of time. We see people walking across the piazza who turn into ghosts and
disappear, followed by others who take their place and then they too disappear. Laced throughout the film
there are scenes of St. Francis of Assisi, shot in black and white and without sound, in which some of the key
elements in the saint’s life that connect to the life of Pope Francis are acted out, such as his calling to rebuild
God’s house, his vow of poverty and his engagement with creation. The film in this way quite gently raises
the implicit question of what we shall do in our own “hour upon the stage.”
Well this is our hour and one that must always begin with Prayer and an acknowledgment of Faith
like we hear in today's Gospel. The prayerful cry of a father asking for the healing of his child and the faith
exhibited by a poor woman's touch. Both who intrinsically believed the words of our Savior: “The things
which are impossible with men are possible with God.” Words that will empower us to use our gifts and
talents in a way that will contribute to the preservation of our planet, its species, and its awesomeness.
Peace,
Deacon Ted

This Week Marks The End of the Catholic
Charities Appeal. But not the end of the human needs here on Cape Cod
supported by the Appeal.
Next week, men, women, and children will still need
food, clothing, shelter and protection. The call for us as
Church to perform corporal and spiritual works of mercy
is not finished. It continues.
To the households in our parish family who have given
to this year’s Appeal, your one hundred thousand sisters
and brothers who are helped extend a warm Thank You.
To those who have not yet given, there is still time. You
can still be a part of this effort.
Whatever you can. For those who cannot.
Envelopes and pledge cards are at the doors of the
church. The collection basket also welcomes Catholic
Charities Appeal gifts.
Our Lady's Guild (OLA/OLH/OLV) Please stop by our bake sale following all
Masses this weekend to take home some
delectable treats! All proceeds benefit Cape
charities. Happy Independence Day!

Parking Mindfulness at OLV For the safety and care of all, please be considerate when parking your car in the main lot both during Masses and when coming to the office for meetings or events. When attending Mass, pull all the way forward to fill each row. Parishioners do leave in a timely fashion so you will not be “trapped” in a spot. So, please, do not park at the end of the row when first arriving.
If you attend morning Mass and are staying for a meeting, gathering, etc. please move your car from the main lot
after Mass, before coming into your meeting. There are funerals planned and the bereaved family and friends attending the Mass will need to pull into the main parking lot. We do not want them to have to weave in/out around parked cars. When attending or hosting an event in the Parish Center, attendees need to park in the back parking
lot. Please do not use the main parking lot of the main
church.
The fire lanes areas that are marked with yellow/orange
stripes are NOT parking areas —not even if you are
quickly dropping off an item to the Parish Office. For
the safety of all and the chance that emergency vehicles need to enter, only park in designated spots and always observe posted rules (ie, no parking in fire lanes). Thank you to all for your cooperation.
Thoughtful Gift Some of the OLV Choir Members have made a new CD of fourteen songs, both vocal and
instrumental music (Be Not Afraid, How Great Thou Art, How Can I Keep From Singing, etc.). The CD’s title is Do Not Fear and it would be an excellent gift for anyone who is going through health problems or any other tough times. You may give a $5 donation and get the CD at the Our Lady of Victory Office.
It's More than Just a Car By donating your car to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you are offering hope to those in need. We have partnered with One Car Makes a Difference, a national vehicle donation program with the facilities and services to make the process simple and convenient to you. Offer your vehicle donation to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul to help a person, a family, or a community. The sale of each vehicle provides a significant benefit for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul . Although the process is simple and quick, the benefits last a long time and you could earn a tax deduction too. Two easy ways to donate your vehicle for auction: 800-322-8284 or svdpusacars.com
Cancer Support Group The next Healing Mass for the Cancer Support Group will be held on Monday evening, July 2 at 6pm in the Parish Center of Our Lady of Victory Church.
All persons dealing with Cancer or any serious illness are welcome to attend. Anointing of the Sick will be offered at this service to those who wish to receive this sacrament. Family members and friends are always welcome. Come join us in prayer for anyone you are caring for or concerned about. Please join us following the Mass for sharing friendship at our Ice Cream Social. The Cancer Support Group is open to new members, friends and families to join us anytime. FMI please contact Geri Medeiros at 508-362-6909.

Faith in Action Opportunity
We are all called to put our faith in action by serving our brothers and sisters in need. One way we do that here at Our Lady of Victory and Our Lady of the Assumption is through our Taste and See fundraiser. This year Taste and See will be held on Friday, September 21 at the Oyster Harbors Club. We raise funds for local organizations that provide services to those right here on the Cape that are otherwise without the basic necessities that we can often take for granted. These organizations help to provide the dignity of knowing when and where the next safe place to sleep and warm meal will come from. You can help to be a part of this event by joining us for a planning meeting on Monday, July 9 at 10am in room M1. We welcome new committee members as well as those with a few hours here and there that can help us with our mission. If you are unable to make the meeting but are interested in helping, please be in touch with Kelley Spodris at 508.775.5744x113 or [email protected]
TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH! Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will
deepen and grow—a day at a time.
Sunday, July 1, 2018 Don’t be afraid to ask
Need is all around: a sick child here, a chronically
ailing elder there. Meanwhile, multitudes languish with
inadequate education, or possibly a simple lack of
inspiration. We all wait more desperately than we
imagine for healing to come, for a word to rouse our
hearts. Hope seems unreasonable, until Jesus passes by.
Those who seek his help—even seizing his garments to
get it—are the ones who go away satisfied. Will we be
among those who reach for what we truly need? Or
will we allow the one who can restore us to pass by?
“If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.”

Keep the light on
Jesus was not the first person, and certainly not the last,
to experience homelessness. The problem is persistent
and worldwide—an estimated 100 million people lack
stable housing. The reasons are many and complex,
from chronic unemployment to substance abuse to
mental illness to natural disaster. But while none of us
may be able to solve homelessness alone, each of us
can respond to it with compassion. The website .org
offers some ideas and opportunities. Find a way to help
someone—you are likely to meet Jesus along the way!

FEAST OF THOMAS,
APOSTLE
May we see your
wounds?
Saint Thomas is famous
for his skepticism
toward initial reports of
Jesus’ Resurrection.
Truth be told, you might wonder if you’d believe in
such fabulous goings-on if they were reported to you
today. Good news often seems feeble compared with
the magnitude of the bad news that comes daily.
Thomas is the patron saint when the reasons for hope
appear frail. Early traditions say he died as a martyr in
India, pierced by a sword. The one whose faith was
bolstered by the wounds of Jesus proved his faith with
his own torn body. What has faith cost you, and do you
have the scars to prove it?
“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands . . . I
will not believe.”

MASS FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY
Unchain our hearts
Demonizing enemies, including religious and political
ones, is one of the unsavory ways in which religious
language can be abused. One’s opponent becomes not
merely wrong but evil incarnate. As we celebrate the
nation we love—and that we wish were always right,
pure, and honorable above all others—we must
acknowledge our government’s sometime misuse of our
wealth and power. Pray that citizen and government
alike may call upon the Lord to free us from whatever
possesses us that is not of God.
“ ‘If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine.’
And he said to them, ‘Go then!’ ”

MEMORIAL OF ELIZABETH OF PORTUGAL
From pain to gain
“What a life of bitterness I am leading,” said Saint
Elizabeth of Portugal (1271-1336). “On whom but God
can I depend?” These anguished words came from a
woman who was married to the king of Portugal at 12,
endured his philandering, watched their son lead an
armed revolt against his own father, and was banished
for a time by her husband. How did she deal with all
these problems? By turning to prayer and works of
mercy, including founding a hospital, a house for former
prostitutes, an orphanage, and a pilgrim hostel.
Elizabeth’s example counsels us not to endure abusive
situations but to turn our pain into healing, both for
others and ourselves.
“Rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.”

MEMORIAL OF MARIA GORETTI, VIRGIN,
MARTYR
The power of forgiveness
The story of Maria Goretti, the young virgin and martyr
whose feast we celebrate today, is one that generations
have read with a mixture of fascination and horror.
Maria was only 11 years old when she was murdered by
a would-be rapist. That’s the horrific part of her story.
The fascinating part is Maria’s deathbed forgiveness of
her attacker and his subsequent conversion. It might
seem hard, even impossible at times, but the important
thing to remember about forgiveness is that it’s good for
us. We benefit far more than the person we have
forgiven. So, do something nice for yourself today:
Forgive someone.
“I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.”

MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN
MARY
Glorify the mystery
Glory is a funny word. We all use it; many
of us want it. But what is it, really? How
much does it cost, and what good does it do to have it?
The Hebrew word for glory means “heaviness.” It refers
to the importance of a thing: The heavier it is, the more
significant or valuable it is, like a gold bar at Fort Knox.
God’s glory denotes God’s overall sovereignty in the
world. Could anything be heavier than the authority of a
God who can create a world—or destroy one!—at will?
Yet God chooses to take that weighty power and use it
to transform death into life for the sake of those afflicted
by mortality. Pray the Glorious Mysteries of the
Rosary today and praise the God whose glory brings
peace to the world.
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018
Gospel Meditation Today's Gospel offers
a rare framework -- a
story in a story. Most
of the healing miracles
are standalone
encounters. One person
approaches Jesus,
demonstrates faith, and is healed. The evangelist tells the
next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on
his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is
interrupted on his journey by "a woman afflicted with
hemorrhages." She bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd,
despite being ritually unclean from her bleeding, and
stretches out to touch his cloak. She is healed! Jesus
meets her eye, confirms her faith, and continues on to
resurrect the young girl.
Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify with
one story -- the long-suffering woman or the young,
innocent girl -- and to move past the other. But here they
sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The woman has been
suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers,
number parallels have deep symbolic meaning.
Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or
the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect
childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As
we endure pain, disappointment, or unmet expectations, it
can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our
coping mechanisms, social adaptations, and hidden
secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some
respects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the
bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive.
He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process
requires prayer, conversations with trusted community
and spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas
of our life. However, we can believe the words of our
Lord. If we approach Jesus in faith, believing that he
wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming
words spoken over the hurts of our life. "I say to you,
arise!" "Go in peace."

The Green Team Compost is organic material that can be added to
soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard
waste currently make up 20 to 30 percent of what
we throw away and should be composted instead.
Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where
they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse
gas. A good resource is the USDA Natural Resources
Conservation Service Fact Sheet on Composting.

Blessing for Independence Day
There is a saying, "To those whom much is given, much is expected." That saying is from “Uncommon Wisdom of John F. Kennedy: A Portrait in His Own Words.” That saying should sum up our thoughts as we celebrate the founding of our country. As we look at our history, we may easily see that much has been given to this country, and many have sacrificed to make sure we have kept those gifts. However, our faith informs us that a gift reaches its ultimate good only when it is given away freely.
Let us pray for this great country of the United States of America:
God our Father, from whom all good gifts come, we are thankful for rest and food.
Grant that, in all we do or say, we keep your goodness always in our thankful hearts.
We entreat you to bless all those who
work to keep us safe, and ask your blessings on all those who work
to share our blessings with others around the world. We ask all this in the name of our
brother and Savior, Jesus. Amen.
