Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy Family,

Alleluia! Christ is Risen; He is truly Risen, Alleluia! This ancient greeting will ring out from all corners of the world today, which sums up what we truly celebrate, the joy of Christ risen and alive in our midst. There is no other day to compare with Easter Sunday! It stands out from all the conflicts and turmoil of our broken world,

especially as we battle this dreadful corona virus at the moment. The Lord’s Resurrection should lift up our minds and enliven our hearts with a joy so complete that it conquers even death itself. Early on the first Easter morning a mighty act of God took place – Christ rose from the dead, altered the past, and shaped the future. Nothing can ever be the same again! That is what makes Easter the greatest occasion of the entire year. It announces that there is a way forward out of darkness to bring us into light, faith from doubt, hope from despair, love from fear; a transformation that is truly possible in our lives as we place our trust in God’s promises. You may feel as many do that we live in changing and very challenging times where few permanent values seem to remain. But there is one salient fact that we can cling to, even today, that over two thousand years ago in a profound act of love, a man who was God, gave up His life on the Cross for our Salvation. He rose from the dead and sits at the right hand of God the Father awaiting our resurrection. Therein gives us real hope! If we love God with all our hearts, minds and strength, then we will live with Him for all eternity. Receive Him in love this Holy Season as we stand apart at the moment, but united closely in spiritual communion as we commemorate those holy events that lead to the central truth of our faith – the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. On behalf of the Clergy, Religious Sisters and Staff, I want to extend my prayerful best wishes for a blessed and happy Easter. Let us continue to pray for one another as we now enter into the great season of Eastertime with the joyful promises of our new life together in Christ Jesus. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad! (Psalm 118). Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father John McCarthy

Twenty years ago, on April 30, 2000, Pope Saint John Paul II canonized Saint Faustina Kowalska, the humble messenger of Divine Mercy. During his homily at the Mass of her canonization, while reßecting on the timeliness of the message of mercy for the twentieth century, the Polish pontiff pondered what humanity’s future might be like. He answered plainly. “We are not given to know. However, it is certain that in addition to new progress there will unfortunately be no lack of painful experiences.”1

The COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted families, parishes, and communities across Long Island and beyond, stands today as one of those painful experiences. What Pope Saint John Paul II knew vaguely to be on the horizon then is sadly ours to experience Þrsthand now. The devastating effects of the coronavirus – death, illness, fear, uncertainty, isolation, unemployment, Þnancial distress Ð have invaded our lives. The weight of this Cross has fallen on our shoulders.

Although Pope Saint John Paul II could not have foreseen the particularities of the pain we are enduring, he knew the soothing balm that would bring us peace. He understood what would “illumine

the way” during this time, namely, “the light of divine mercy,” the supernatural gift that uplifts every generation.2 What he proposed to humanity in his homily two decades ago, he still proposes from

“the window of the Father’s house”3 today: A radical receptivity of God’s “great and unfathomable mercy.”4

This Divine Mercy Sunday 2020, encouraged by Pope Saint John Paul II who points to merciful light in the midst of darkness, the Diocese of Rockville Centre receives anew the message of mercy entrusted to Saint Faustina. Together, on this Second Sunday of Easter, we look upon the Image of the Divine Mercy. In contemplating this serene painting of Our Lord, we discover again three aids for these days of crisis: Christ’s gaze, His action, and a timely prayer.

First, beginning at the top of the Image, we encounter the gaze of mercy. There, the Lord’s eyes look upon us. How good this is to hear and know

of the Divine Mercy, the familiar line is more striking. Its Þve words formulate perfectly a prayer in the midst of so much uncertainty. How good is the Lord! He still teaches his disciples how to pray (cf. Lk. 11:1), and He invites us to make these words the signature of our lives. This prayer is not offered blindly. It is said after having met the LordÕs gaze and having been viviÞed in His life-giving rays. Our bold placing of trust arises from “the ocean of mercy” He has shown to us and from

which we have received.10 Through our contemplation of the Image, we recall that God has moved towards us, that He has loved us, and that He has shown mercy to us, and therefore, we know it is reasonable to say, “Jesus, I trust in you.”

The Lord’s look, His love, and that brief prayer are special gifts this year. They offer consolation. They provide peace.

The Image of the Divine Mercy also serves as “a reminder of the demands of [His] mercy.”11 As Pope Saint John Paul II said in his second encyclical, Dives in Misericordia (Rich in Mercy), “Jesus Christ taught that man not only receives and

experiences the mercy of God, but that he is also called ‘to practice mercy’ towards others.”12 In short, we who have received mercy are called to give mercy.

In these weeks, the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are being lived radiantly. Witnesses of mercy are in our midst, and our gratitude ßows to the many who are sharing what they have received.

again! Jesus looks at us. He sees us as we are, laden, especially now, with the anxieties, burdens, and challenges of life. He sees us just as he saw those Gospel Þgures whom we met this Lent - the Samaritan woman at the well, the man born blind, and Martha and Mary, the grieving sisters of Lazarus. He loves us as He loved them. When feelings of loneliness or discouragement arise, when questions pervade our hearts or perplexities disturb our peace, the Image reminds us that we can look to the Lord and always Þnd Him looking at us. In his eyes, we can discover “the look of love which [we] crave.”5 There, we can meet mercy, “the greatest attribute of God,” which “no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity.”6

Second, in contemplating the Image of the Divine Mercy, w e n o t e t h e t w o r a y s emanating from Our Lord’s breast, one red and one pale. As the Lord to ld Saint Faustina, “The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls.”7 With the Church through centuries, we see in them the sacraments, Baptism and Eucharist, and we trace these gifts of life back to their source, His pierced side (cf. Jn. 19:34). These glorious rays ßow from woundedness. Their origin is in the victory of the Cross. They highlight an act of love, a total gift of self. This pale ray and red ray remind us that the Lord has acted for us. Undeserving though we were, he loved us to the end (cf. Jn. 13:1) and laid down his life for us. “God is love, and Mercy is His deed.”8 And we are the beneÞciaries of that mercy. In these weeks, when God might seem unmoved or distant, these rays proclaim again the tender mercy shown from the Cross. They profess that God has acted and that He still acts with a mercy that sustains the world.

Third, we read the “signature” at the bottom of the Image, “Jesus, I trust in you.”9 On this year’s Feast

protect, love and serve life.”14 The truth and beauty of the encyclical is underscored in these days when our fragility is before us and society is united in its concern for life.

The second anniversary falls on May 18th, when we will celebrate the centenary of Pope Saint John Paul II’s birth. Spending time with this indefatigable preacher of mercy, it is good to remember that his life was not immune to crisis and turmoil. He witnessed and experienced much that could have weighed him down. However, throughout his journey, he turned to the Lord and sought to know His mercy. May he help us invite the Divine Mercy into our lives, especially in these days.

Together with Pope Saint John Paul II and Saint Faustina, let us implore Almighty God:

I ßy to Your mercy, Compassionate God, who alone are good. Although my misery is great, and my offenses are many, I trust in Your mercy, because You are the God of mercy; and, from time immemorial, it has never been heard of, nor do heaven or earth remember, that a soul trusting in Your mercy has been disappointed.15

Let us pray for the souls of those who have died from the coronavirus and for the solace of their families. We entrust them to the Divine Mercy.

And whatever may come, let us never fail to say, Jesus, I trust in you.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. BarresBishop of Rockville Centre

We call to mind the heroic virtue and tender mercy alive in our families and among our neighbors. With Pope Francis, we think, too, of those women and men who are “writing the decisive events of our time: doctors, nurses, supermarket employees, cleaners, caregivers, providers of transport, law and order forces, volunteers, priests, deacons, religious men and women and so very many others.”13 In this challenging time, mercy is on display.

Divine Mercy Sunday falls this year between two notable anniversaries in the life and pontiÞcate of Pope Saint John Paul II. Both of which provide insight and wisdom for our present situation.

The Þrst anniversary occurred on March 25th, when we marked twenty-Þve years since the release of Pope Saint John Paul II’s encyclical letter on the Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae). That letter shone the light of the Divine Mercy on threats against life. It articulated the good news of life, a gift from God that leads to eternal life with God, and it called every person to “respect,

Pope’s Easter Urbi et Orbi message: “The contagion of hope”Pope Francis’ 'Urbi et Orbi message on Easter Sunday challenges us to ban indifference, self-centredness, division

and forgetfulness during this time of Covid-19 – and to spread the “contagion” of hope.

By Seàn-Patrick Lovett

No banner hung from the central balcony of St Peter’s Basilica. No bands played the Vatican anthem. No floral arrangements decorated St Peter’s Square. Nearby streets were empty and silent, as Italy continues to respect a nationwide coronavirus lockdown.

Inside the Basilica, surrounded only by his closest collaborators, Pope Francis delivered his traditional Easter Urbi et Orbi message to the city of Rome and the world.

A different “contagion”Millions of people watched and listened on various media platforms as the Pope repeated the Easter proclamation: “Christ, my hope, is risen!”. He called this message “a different ‘contagion’”, one that is transmitted “from heart to heart”.

This Good News is like a new flame that springs up “in the night of a world already faced with epochal challenges, and now oppressed by a pandemic severely testing our whole human family”, said the Pope.

Christ’s resurrection is not a “magic formula that makes problems vanish”, he continued, “it is the victory of love over the root of evil”. This victory “does not ‘by-pass’ suffering and death, but passes through them, opening a path in the abyss, trans-forming evil into good”, he added.

Comfort for those affected by the coronavirusThe Pope’s thoughts turned immediately to those directly affected by the coronavirus. “For many, this is an Easter of solitude, lived amid the sorrow and hardship that the pandemic is causing, from physical suffering to economic difficulties”, he said.

“This disease has not only deprived us of human closeness, but also of the possibility of receiving in person the consolation that flows from the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Reconciliation”, said Pope Francis.

“But the Lord has not left us alone”, he added. “United in our prayer, we are convinced that He has laid His hand upon us”.

Gratitude to those providing essential servicesThe Pope then expressed his gratitude and affection to doctors and nurses, and “to all who work diligently to guarantee the essential services necessary for civil society, and to the law enforcement and military personnel who in many countries have helped ease people’s difficulties and sufferings”.

Encouragement to work for the common goodPope Francis acknowledged that “this is also a time of worry about an uncertain future, about jobs that are at risk”. He encour-aged political leaders “to work actively for the common good”, providing the means “to enable everyone to lead a dignified life and, when circumstances allow, to assist them in resuming their normal daily activities”.

Not a time for indifferenceThis is not a time for indifference, said the Pope, “because the whole world is suffering and needs to be united in facing the pandemic”. He prayed that the risen Jesus may grant hope “to all the poor, to those living on the peripheries, to refugees and the homeless”. Pope Francis also called for the relaxation of international sanctions and for “the reduction, if not the forgive-ness, of the debt burdening the balance sheets of the poorest nations”.

Not a time for self-centrednessThis is not a time for self-centredness, continued Pope Francis, because “the challenge we are facing is shared by all”. Europe, in particular, was able “to overcome the rivalries of the past” following the Second World War, “thanks to a concrete spirit of solidarity”. It is urgent “these rivalries do not regain force”, the Pope continued. We all need to recognize ourselves “as part of a single family and support one another”. Selfishly pursuing particular interests risks “damaging the peaceful coexistence and development of future generations”, he added.

Not a time for divisionThis is not a time for division, said the Pope, as he appealed for “an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world”. Criticizing the vast amounts of money spent on the arms trade, Pope Francis called for a solution to the ongoing conflicts in Syria, Yemen, Iraq and Lebanon. He said he hoped Israelis and Palestinians might resume dialogue, that the situation in eastern Ukraine might be resolved, and that “terrorist attacks carried out against so many innocent people in different African countries may come to an end”.

Not a time for forgetfulnessThis is not a time for forgetfulness, continued Pope Francis, referring to the humanitarian crises being faced in Asia and Africa. He prayed for refugees and migrants “living in unbearable conditions, especially in Libya and on the border between Greece and Turkey”. The Pope prayed also that solutions may be found in Venezuela, allowing “international assistance to a population suffering from the grave political, socio-economic and health situation” there.

Christ dispels the darkness of suffering“Indifference, self-centredness, division and forgetfulness are not words we want to hear at this time”, said the Pope. These words “seem to prevail when fear and death overwhelm us”, and we want to ban them forever, he added.Pope Francis concluded his Urbi et Orbi message with a prayer: “May Christ, who has already defeated death and opened for us the way to eternal salvation, dispel the darkness of our suffering humanity and lead us into the light of His glorious day. A day that knows no end”.

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy,

Now that we have been renewed in our faith with the celebration of Easter, let us remember that Eastertide continues for fifty days and is a season of new life, rejoicing, joy and thanksgiving. The spirit of Easter, however, truly lives on beyond this season as it comes alive through prayer, sharing in the sacraments and in the practice of giving to others.

When we support the Catholic Ministries Appeal, we have the opportunity to come together as One Family in Mission to serve so many in our faith community. Your gifts support programs that respect the sanctity of life at all stages; help our children and young adults grow in their faith through religious education, youth ministry and Campus Ministry, and form our seminarians, deacons and lay leaders who serve us daily in our parishes. The Appeal also helps support Catholic Charities programs such as their supportive housing for people with intellectu-al and developmental disabilities, where Brian resides.

When Brian was three years old, he had a massive cerebral hemorrhage and needed extensive care. As he got older, his parents wanted to find a place where he could be more independent and be a part of a community. Just before his 30th birthday, Brian moved into Catholic Charities Christopher Residence.

“This program means so much to Brian and our family. He’s content and safe, and as we are getting older, we know that he will continue to be cared for with love and dignity,” shared Mrs. Healy, Brian’s Mom.

Please know that 100% of the money raised is restricted to the ministries of the Appeal like those that serve Brian and so many more!

Please join me in supporting this year’s Catholic Ministries Appeal. All gifts matter as we support the crucial min-istries of our diocese. May God Bless you this Eastertide and beyond.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. John McCarthy

LECTIO DIVINA is a slow, contemplative praying of the Scriptures. Time set aside in a special way for lectio divina enables us to discover in our daily life an underlying spiritual rhythm. Within this rhythm, we discover an increasing ability to offer more of ourselves and our relationships to the Father, and to accept the embrace that God is continuously extending to us in the person of his son, Jesus Christ.

PANTRY NEEDS: Household Cleaning & Disinfecting Supplies, Hand Washing Soap, Hand Sanitizer

(60%+ Alcohol Based), Soap, Tissues & Toilet Paper. THANK YOU!

Help for those in need from our food pantry and outreach office is available free of charge to people of

all faiths living within the geographic boundaries of our parish and to registered parishioners living within

and outside our boundaries. All services are confidential. Our services are funded by donations made to

Parish Services.

As we journey together through these difficult days, we are so grateful to all who have subscribed to our online giving option and to those who have mailed in their weekly envelopes. We realize that this situation has placed an emotional and financial burden on many of you. It has also put a strain on our parish’s budget and has the potential to impact our mission. If you are able to continue your financial support, may we suggest oppor-tunities for giving which prove to be most cost-effective and help us to sustain parish operations and expenses.

You may prefer the simplicity of our “Text to Give” option from your mobile phone. It is safe, secure and convenient. Although previously a function of the Catholic Ministry Appeal, it has currently been reutilized for parish giving and 100% of your contribution will go to our parish.

Evangelization is our mission in the Church. It is the mission Jesus gave us when He said, “Go and make disciples of every nation…” (Matt. 28:19).

If we have been baptized into the Body of Christ, and given the Holy Spirit to share in Christ’s mission, we must do what He did: seek out the lost, gather people together, and share the good news of salvation. At the end of Mass, we are sent forth like the Apostles: “Go, and proclaim the Gospel with your life.”

The spiritual and corporal works of mercy also embody this call. The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is an opportunity to support the ministries that help us as we build up the Body of Christ.

Online offerings are easy as a click of the mouse. Online offerings save you time and the parish money on envelopes and postage. You control the amout you want to give, when and how often.
