OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord.

LET US PRAY In your love and kindness please pray for the sick of our parish, especially: Lisa Martinsky, Gregg Smith, and Shalini Krawicz.

Please also remember the deceased of our parish and their families, especially: Maryanne Contino, Kevin Neville, Anna Dinelli, Nicole Minson, John Annillo, Ruth Ames, and Patricia Jago.

Please join with us in praying one OUR FATHER per day for all those who have no one to pray for them.

THE SANCTUARY LAMPS burn this week in memory of: Michael Collins, Theresa & Vincent Martucci, and for Adele & Victor Du Bois.

If you would like more information about reserving a Sanctuary Lamp in memory of a loved one or for a Special Intention, please call the rectory office at 201-391-5315.

Pastor’s Column

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

As we continue our Lent, we might meditate on these words, from Vatican II’s Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes), written over 50 years ago in 1965, yet no less true today:

The world of today reveals itself as at once powerful and weak, capable of achieving the best or the worst. There lies open before it the way to freedom or slavery, progress or regression, brotherhood or hatred. In addition, man is becoming aware that it is for himself to give the right direction to forces that he himself has awakened, forces that can be his master or his servant. He therefore puts questions to himself….

Many things compete for his attention, but he is always compelled to make a choice among them, and to renounce some. What is more, in his weakness and sinfulness he often does what he does not want to do, and fails to do what he would like to do. In consequence, he suffers from a conflict within himself, and this in turn gives rise to so many great tensions in society.

Very many people, infected as they are with a materialistic way of life, cannot see this dramatic state of affairs in all its clarity, or at least are prevented from giving thought to it because of the unhappiness that they themselves experience….

But in the face of the way the world is developing today, there is an ever increasing number of people who are asking the most fundamental questions or are seeing them with a keener awareness: What is man? What is the meaning of pain, of evil, of death, which still persist in spite of such great progress? What is the use of those successes, achieved at such a cost? What can man contribute to society, what can he expect from society? What will come after this life on earth?

The Church believes that Christ died and rose for all, and can give man light and strength through his Spirit to fulfil his highest calling; his is the only name under heaven in which men can be saved.

So too the Church believes that the center and goal of all human history is found in her Lord and Master.

The Church also affirms that underlying all changes there are many things that do not change; they have their ultimate foundation in Christ, who is the same yesterday, today and forever.

God bless you all!

*(Gaudium et spes, no. 9-10)

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

“I, THE LORD, AM YOUR GOD” The Ten Commandments are “apodictic” laws, im-posing a command directly. What if today we were to consider the words of Paul and Jesus in today’s read-ings not merely as guidance, but as apodictic laws? Paul wants to dispel dissension among the Chris-tians at Corinth and point out the difference between lukewarm believers and “those who are called.” His “laws” from today’s second reading would read:

1. Thou shalt not put human wisdom above God’s wisdom. 2. Thou shalt not demand signs. 3. Thou shalt not put human strength above God’s strength. 4. Thou shalt accept the paradox of the cross.

Can a people who grew up singing “I Did It My Way” embrace the painful paradox of the cross, which de-mands we “do it his way?” Paul’s “commandments” de-mand submission, sacrifice, and service. If they were written in stone, would they create more committed Christians or fewer folks in the pews on Sunday? Would they bring us to our knees or send us out the door?

CLEANSING THE TEMPLE The Gospel adds one more commandment to to-day’s short list: Thou shalt not use religion for personal gain. We are to keep our business separate from God’s business. Jesus’ whip of cords leaves no doubt that he means business, and he offers his body on the cross to prove it: “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up” (John 2:19). But can we accept the paradox of the cross or are we often subtly serving ourselves in the name of Christ? Do we honor human achievement, material success, and personal power more than humility, simplicity, and compassion? This Lent, as we prepare to welcome new members into our communities, let’s show them that we also “mean business”—that we are a community of people who do it his way, not our way. Let’s live our lives ac-cording to all fifteen “commandments,” so that others will say of us, “And they (finally) came to (really) believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.”

HACKENSACK WALK in DINNER PROGRAM- Volunteers are needed to help serve dinner at the Soup Kitchen in Hackensack on Thursday, March 8th. Bulletin boards will be set up in the Vestibule and in the Gathering Space indicating the food and supplies needed. These items should be brought to the Parish Center on Thursday, March 8th by 2pm. OLM TRACK—OLM has had a “long-running” and very successful Track & Field program for our Grade 1-8 stu-dents. This program has helped to introduce and train student-athletes, not only, in various track and field events, but also, athletic competition, teamwork and sportsmanship. Each season the OLM T&F Team prac-tices weekly and competes against other Bergen County Catholic Schools in a series of track meets. This pro-gram requires the active support and involvement of volunteer coaches and administrators. The continued existence of the T&F program is currently in jeopardy due to the limited number of coaches and administrators committed to participating and supporting the 2018 sea-son. The OLM Team needs immediate help. If you are interested in participating in any way, please contact Tom Monahan at (201) 953-0412 or [email protected]. I will be happy to provide more information as to how you can help and ensure the continuation of this special program. Thank You.

SOCIAL JUSTICE & PEACE MINISTRY NEWS Putting Faith Into A-c-t-i-o-n…. Did you know? Blessed Sacrament Church, 610 Clinton Ave., Newark is also known as Blessed Sacra-ment St. Charles Borromeo Church. Our Lady of Mercy and Blessed Sacrament established a relationship in 1984 by Fr. Jack Martin, 34 years ago! Of course, there have been many changes over the years, but not the need for food donations at Blessed Sacrament’s Food Pantry. The pantry serves families, senior citizens, vet-erans, disabled and anyone in need of food assistance. Most clients reside in the Newark area and number ap-proximately 300-350 people a month. The food pantry is opened every other week. BSSCB, Robyn Barrington-Padia, Pastoral Associate & Outreach Ministry states, “ We are a pantry where our clients find hope and help with dignity and respect. Any donation is appreciated”. Be A Blessing: OLM/SJPM is in the process of revi-talizing our long established relationship with Blessed Sacrament. A cart marked “Blessed Sacrament” will be located in the front of the main church entrance after all weekend Masses. Donations may be placed in the cart. Please check the expiration dates on items and do not place perishable items in the cart. Deliveries are made to BSSCB when the cart is full. Thank you for your con-tinued generosity.

OLM NEWSLETTER—The 2018 issue has been sent out via email and is on the web site. You will discover the answers to questions regarding the Fatima appari-tion.
