6 Home of Peace, Love, and Welcome. June 2, 2019

We celebrate the Ascension of the Lord; in the original historical context – about 2000 years ago – it marked the conclusion of Christ’s Mission, the com-

pletion of the Paschal Mystery (the Mystery of His Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension). It means Divine Revelation is complete: “We now await no further new public revelation” (Vatican II, Dei Verbum, 4). Again, in that original historical context, we entered the “novena” (9 days’ period) of prayer awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit and the beginning of His Mission. The Ascension means Christ now sits at the right-hand of the Father and enjoys the fullness of glory He had with the Father before the

world was made (cf. John 17:5). St. Paul puts it beautifully, “God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil 2:9-11). In heaven, seated at the right-hand of the Father, Jesus exercises His priesthood for all time. It becomes easy for us to see and un-derstand clearly how all our liturgical celebrations (the Mass, Sacraments, etc), devotions and prayers are channeled to the Heavenly Father through Him. The power of His mediation is completely guaranteed. If you need something from the White House, somebody who works in Wal-Mart may not be able to help; but somebody in the President’s cabinet could easily help. Now Jesus occupies His exalted position at the right-hand of the Father; He is definitely able to help all those who seek favor from God in His name. Hence, Jesus stated unequivocally, “Whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you” (John 15:16). BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “[Christ] holds his priesthood per-manently, because he continues for ever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them” (Heb 7:24-25). Dates to Remember: June 8 – Pen-tecost Morning of Reflection; June 12 – Wacky Wednesday begins for 7th-12th grades and June 15 – Spanish couples retreat. God bless you for all you do for His glory in Our Lady of Grace. Amen.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

In preparation for the Feast of Pentecost on Sunday, June 9

Before Jesus’ Ascension into Heaven, he tells his disciples to return to Jerusalem and to wait in prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit (See Acts 1:4-5). For the next nine days, the disciples, along with Mary and some other women, “devoted themselves to constant prayer” (Acts 1:14). This time of prayer is often called the first novena (meaning nine). A novena is a nine-day period of prayer for a particular intention.

Beginning the Friday before (May 31) you are invited to pray the following Novena to the Holy Spirit for any particular intention. You are encouraged to also pray for our Church family that we will have a greater sense of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

The Holy Spirit is God’s greatest gift to us. For the next nine days, make a particular effort to be attentive to the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit in your daily life and to respond to his promptings.

NOVENA OUTLINE

• Opening Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, enkindle in us the fire of your love.

Send forth your Spirit and we shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.

Meditate on Scripture assigned for each day (see below)

Pray one decade of the Rosary asking Mary to help you to become more attentive and responsive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Closing Prayer

Father of Light, from whom every good gift comes, send your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind… And by the flame of your wisdom, open the horizons of our minds. Loosen our tongues to sing your praise in words beyond the power of speech, for without your Spirit we could never raise our voices in words of peace or announce the truth that Jesus is Lord! Amen.

(Day 4—9 continued from last week)

Day Four Acts 4: 32-37 Led by the Holy Spirit, the first followers of Christ join together in a small Christian community to share life and God’s deeds in their midst. “Holy Spirit, may our Small Christian Community grow in love for you.” Day Five Acts 10:44-48 The Holy Spirit is poured out on the Gentiles. “Holy Spirit, help me to be open to your workings in the most surprising places and ways.” Day Six Acts 13:1-12 Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Paul and Barnabas are discerned to go on their first missionary journey. “Holy Spirit, help me to hear your voice when you call out to me.” Day Seven Rom 8:26-27 The Holy Spirit helps us in our prayer. “Holy Spirit, teach me to pray.” Day Eight 1Cor 3:10-16 The Holy Spirit helps us to understand the deep things of God. “Holy Spirit, show me God’s path for my life.” Day Nine Gal 5:16-26 Paul names some of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. We are holy and Spirit-filled to the extent that the fruits of the Holy Spirit are operative in our lives. “Holy Spirit, help me to grow in love, peace, joy.”

FEET ON THE GROUND “Until next week, keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!” Not today’s scriptural wis-dom, but legendary DJ Casey Kasem’s sage advice, heard across America for generations, American Top 40’s chal-lenging sign-off. Though Casey wasn’t quoting scripture, today’s Acts of the Apostles offers similar advice. As Je-sus ascended, disciples “were looking intently at the sky.” Wouldn’t we prefer a soul-relaxing gaze into peaceful blue skies to a heart-breaking focus on this blood-stained earth? But heavenly questioners asked Jesus’ first disci-ples, “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?” Earth awaited their mission! While our hearts should “keep reaching for” heaven, we need to “keep our feet on the ground.” Ascension’s scriptures and the Jubilee of Mercy remind us: the Jesus we revere as “ascended into heaven” lives right here among us on earth, awaiting our recognition and loving service.
