6 Home of Peace, Love, and Welcome. September 22, 2019

In the Gospel Passage (Luke 16:1-13), Christ makes this challenging statement: “Make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” Was Jesus – our Lord and

God – encouraging us to become dishonest, and to cheat and dupe people in order to share with the poor? Certainly not! He was only addressing the flimsy reasons we give to justify selfishness and greed. In the First Reading (Amos 8:4-7), PROPHET AMOS SPEAKS AGAINST SOCIAL INJUSTICES: The rich and powerful used their position to amass wealth through cruel, deceitful and fraudulent means, at the

expense of the poor. Prophet Amos proclaimed, “Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land!.... We will diminish the ephah, add to the shekel, and fix our scales for cheating! We will buy the lowly for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals; even the refuse of the wheat we will sell!” Wow! Incredible! And in the Gospel Passage, a steward who was about to be fired for dishonesty shrewdly defrauded his master by giving fraudulent rebates to their clients: “that they may welcome me into their homes.” Of course, his master caught him in the act. But instead of indicting him, “he… commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently [shrewdly].” Are you kidding me? Please, do not confuse the master in this passage with Jesus. JESUS WILL NOT PRAISE ANYONE FOR ADDING SIN UPON SIN. The master of the steward tolerated him because he too was fraudulent and shrewd: “For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their… [own kind].” Truly, “birds of the same feather flock together.” CHRIST’S OVERALL POINT IS, none of us can claim that all his/her wealth is 100% free from sin or dishonesty. It’s only a matter of degree. Some cheat 70%, some cheat 50%, some 10% and some perhaps 2%. But certainly no one can claim to be entirely free from cheating (cf. 1John 1:8-9). Therefore, Jesus enjoins, “Make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth, so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.” BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “[Alms giving] love covers a multitude of sins” (1Pet 4:8; cf. Prov 10:12). ¡Ciertamente no!

Reflection on the Sunday Readings By Fr. Eamon Tobin In the first reading, Amos condemns the rich for being more concerned with money than with true worship. In the second reading, Paul encourages prayers of intercession, especially for leaders. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks about the importance of decisive action in a time of crisis and about using material wealth in a way that will give honor to God. Let us listen to God’s Word to hear what it is he wants to say to us in these readings today Reflexión sobre el Lecturas dominicales Por el p. Eamon Tobin En la primera lectura, Amós condena a los ricos por preocuparse más por el dinero que por la ver-dadera adoración.

TIMING It is never the wrong time to do the right thing.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although June is the month most associated with weddings in the United States, September has become more popular in recent years. Wedding celebrations al-ways require some savvy planning, and people who have a talent for hospitality in the mix. At the wedding feast at Cana, the mother of Jesus was recruited to deal with some of the details of the banquet, and when a very understandable crisis arose, she did what she could to rescue the party. Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table settings knows the stress! Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ’s blessing of this marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless marriages. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from the family home to the doors of the church, where the celebration was held in public view. From this prac-tice came a prayer called the “Nuptial Blessing,” one of the most solemn prayers in our tradition. It is very much like the prayers by which baptismal water and chrism are consecrated, the ordination prayer over a priest, and the Eucharistic Prayers over bread and wine. Four hun-dred fifty years ago, weddings moved inside the church building. All of this gives married couples good reason to celebrate their anniversaries well, especially with the clinking of glasses filled with good wine. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Padre Pio was born on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, southern Italy. He was tutored privately until his entry to the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars at the age of 15. Of feeble health but strong will, with the help of grace, he completed the required studies and was ordained a priest in 1910.

On September 20, 1918 the five wounds of our Lord’s passion appeared on his body, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Catholic Church. Countless persons were attracted to his confessional and many more received his saintly counsel and spiritual guidance through correspondence. His whole life was marked by long hours of prayer and continual austerity. His letters to his spiritual directors reveal the ineffable suffering, physical and spiritual, which accompanied him all through his life. They also reveal his deep union with God, his burning love for the Blessed Eucharist and Our Blessed Lady.

A Five-Year Planning Team has been formed. This team is in the process of evaluating our properties and making priorities to what repairs and or items that will need replaced. The Diocese has been recommending we have a team in place so we can be pro-active in keeping our campus up to date and also have the funds to do the work. As we determine items that need repaired or fixed we will publish to you. GOD IS ON THE SIDE OF THE POOR Two of today’s readings make it quite clear that God is on the side of the poor. Amos describes in detail the exploitation of the poor and needy. The psalm repeats that God acts to benefit the poor and lowly. But Luke turns things upside down, telling a tale of a conflicted steward, about to be fired, who demonstrates his clever-ness and is rewarded. Like the community to whom Paul writes in Timothy, these readings are personal, directed to believers, members of the Jewish and Christian com-munities, who struggle to deal with personal choices about how to conduct their lives. They offer an outline for how God wishes us to live in a world as complicated and as confusing as our own. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor (Psalm 113).

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
