Reflection on the Sunday Readings By Fr. Eamon Tobin The Feast of Pentecost completed the Lent-Easter season. We resume Ordinary Time the day af-ter Pentecost. The Sundays in this part of Ordinary Time begin with two Solemnities, namely, the Most Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi. During the Fifty Days of Easter, we celebrated what God did for us through Jesus. This Sunday on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, we celebrate who God is for us. The first reading speaks of Lady Wisdom’s role in creation. The second reading and the Gospel are chosen because both readings mention all three persons of the Holy Trinity. Let us listen to God’s Word to hear what it is he wants to say to us in these readings today Reflexión sobre el Lecturas de los domingos Por el padre Eamon Tobin La fiesta de Pentecostés completó la temporada de Cuaresma-Pascua. We celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. In the Gospel Passage (John 16:12-15), Jesus said: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth….

Everything that the Father has is mine.” He was clearly speaking about the relationship of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Our human language is grossly inadequate to express the Mystery. First, the names “The Father” and “The Son” are not human equivalents; not as we speak of biological father and son. For instance, in Isaiah 9:6, the Son is called “Eternal Father.” This anticipates Christ’s later

discourse with Philip. Philip had asked, “‘Lord, show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” (John 14:8-9). Second, many times, we are not conscious that the Three Persons of the Trinity are all Spirits: God is Supreme Spirit (cf. John 4:24; 2Cor 3:17; 1Tim 1:17); yet only the Holy Spirit – the Third Person is spoken of by name as Spirit. In spite of the limitations of our human language, the Holy Spirit, just as Christ promised, has led the Church to deeper and fuller understanding of the Mystery. BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (2Cor 13:14). HAPPY FATHER’S DAY! Providentially, our Father’s Day 2019 coincides with Trinity Sunday. Christ invites us to keep in mind the Eternal Father’s Day! The Eternal Father is the One “from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named” (Eph 3:14-15); from whom every fatherhood takes its name. In many respects and all things being equal, fathers are good role models for their children; they make tremendous sacrifices for their families. We strive to emulate their good examples and live according to the cardinal principles they inculcate or inculcated in us – love and fear of God, love of country and neighbor, hard work and dedication, respect for all, living in peace, harmony and good will. May God bless our fathers – biological, adopted and spiritual fathers (living or dead) – through Christ our Lord. Amen. THIS IS THE HOLY TRINITY Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, one of the most confounding mysteries of our faith. Through this mystery we experience our relationship to God: Creator, Savior, and Holy Spirit. This relationship is not easy to understand or to describe. It does not become clearer through analysis. Its complexity mirrors the complexity of all our relationships. We understand our relationships with our spouses, our chil-dren, our parents, and our friends only through daily give-and-take, annual rituals, and the life-changing moments we share. We understand our relationships only as we live them. The relationships we have with those we love, and who love us, sustain us through an uncertain and difficult life. This is the Holy Trinity. What is striking about today’s readings is that each is incomplete. What they do offer is a description of a mo-ment in our relationship, a memory of a time and an event when our relationship made sense even though that sense may be beyond our ability to describe fully. Often that is all that our faith offers, that is, a memory of what is possible, what is promised, what has been given. A memory of eter-nity, of love beyond understanding is to be cherished and nurtured even if not fully understood. This is the Holy Trin-ity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ESTA ES LA SANTÍSIMA TRINIDAD Hoy celebramos a la Santísima Trinidad, uno de los

misterios más confusos de nuestra fe. Por medio de este misterio, experimentamos nuestra relación con Dios: Creador, Salvador y Santificador. Esta relación no es fá-cil de entender o describir. No se hace más clara por el análisis. Su complejidad refleja la complejidad de todas nuestras relaciones. Entendemos nuestras relaciones con nuestra esposa, nuestros hijos, nuestros padres y nuestros amigos solamente en el día a día, ritos anuales y esos mo-mentos que cambian la vida que compartimos. Entende-mos nuestras relaciones al vivir con ellas. Las relaciones que tenemos con los que amamos y con quienes nos aman, nos sustentan por medio de una vida incierta y difícil. Es-ta es la Santísima Trinidad. Lo que es sorprendente de las lecturas de hoy es que cada una está incompleta. Lo que ellas ofrecen es una descripción de un momento de nuestra relación, una me-moria de un tiempo y un evento donde nuestra relación tiene sentido, aunque ese sentido pueda estar más allá de nuestra habilidad para describirla completamente. Fre-cuentemente eso es todo lo ofrece nuestra fe, es decir, una memoria de lo que es posible, lo que se promete lo que se ha dado. Una memoria de eternidad, de amor, más allá del entendimiento, debe ser apreciada y nutrida incluso si no es completamente comprendida. Esta es la Santísima Trinidad. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
