    WEPISTLE READING: Romans 5:1, 6-10 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Albert L . Throckmorton

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ .

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

For one will scarcely die for a righteous person— though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—

but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God .

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

    WCONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . EBENEzER

O what wonder! how amazing! Jesus, glorious King of kings, Deigns to call us His beloved, lets us rest beneath His wings.

Let our hands perform His bidding, let our feet run in His ways: Let our eyes see Jesus only, let our lips speak forth His praise.

    “The Love of God” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . LOVE OF GOD

Stanza 3 was penciled on the wall of a narrow room in an insane asylum by a man said to have been demented. The lines were discovered when they laid him in his coffin.

    Soloist:

The love of God is greater farThan tongue or pen can ever tell;It goes beyond the highest star,And reaches to the lowest hell; The guilty pair, bowed down with care,God gave His Son to win;His erring child He reconciledAnd pardoned from his sin .

O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure—The saints’ and angels’ song.

    Choir:

When hoary time shall pass away,And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,When men who here refuse to pray,On rocks and hills and mountains call,God’s love so sure, shall still endure,All measureless and strong;Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—The saints’ and angels’ song .

    Refrain

Congregation:Could we with ink the ocean fillAnd were the skies of parchment made,Were every stalk on earth a quillAnd every man a scribe by trade; To write the love of God aboveWould drain the ocean dry;Nor could the scroll contain the whole,Though stretched from sky to sky.O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure—The saints’ and angels’ song.

    “Just As I Am, without One Plea” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . WOODWORTH

Just as I am, without one plea, But that Thy blood was shed for me, And that Thou bidst me come to Thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot, To Thee Whose blood can cleanse each spot, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt, Fightings and fears within, without, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind; Sight, riches, healing of the mind, Yea, all I need in Thee to find, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve; Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thy love unknown Hath broken every barrier down; Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

    “Jesus, What a Friend for Sinners!” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . HYFRYDOL

Jesus! what a Friend for sinners! Jesus! Lover of my soul; Friends may fail me, foes assail me, He, my Savior, makes me whole.

Hallelujah! what a Savior! Hallelujah! what a Friend! Saving, helping, keeping, loving, He is with me to the end.

Jesus! what a Strength in weakness! Let me hide myself in Him. Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing, He, my Strength, my victory wins.

Jesus! what a Help in sorrow! While the billows over me roll, Even when my heart is breaking, He, my Comfort, helps my soul.

    “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Stuart Townend

How deep the Father’s love for us, How vast beyond all measure, That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss; The Father turns His face away, As wounds which mar the Chosen One Bring many sons to glory.Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders;Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice Call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished; His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished.I will not boast in anythingNo gifts, no power, no wisdom; But I will boast in Jesus Christ,His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.

We consider it a privilege to have our children in worship with us. If your small children become restless and vocal, we invite you to the children’s room especially designed for them at the rear of the Sanctuary. They are also welcome in the nursery. Older children should also be encouraged to come to church prepared to stay in their pew throughout the service. One of our pastors will be available after the service to pray for you or to offer helpful direction regarding your spiritual life. He will be in the Gathering Room, which is the first room on your left as you exit the southwest door of the Sanctuary (closest to the pulpit). You may also send your confidential email to [email protected] with questions about your spiritual life.

    Welcome!

If you are visiting with us today, we welcome you to Second Presbyterian . Please sign our Friendship Pad, which will be passed during the Greetings time of the service . Our Congregational Communities (CCs), also known as Sunday School classes, offer a wide variety of options appealing to various age groups and stages of life . Visiting a CC is the best way to get to know others and become involved . CCs meet on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a .m . For a full listing of classes, visit www .2pc .org/cc .

    Weekly Focus on Missions

World Missions: Andy and Brooke work in an Asian city that has several colleges and universities . Andy is an area administrator for the English Language Institute (ELI) which offers college students classes in English as a second language . As relationships are built with the students, teachers hope to share their faith . Andy’s assistant is moving away, so please pray for wisdom and guidance as he seeks to hire someone new . Also pray for continued favor with the authorities and for an article containing slanderous accusations to be quieted before it is published .Mission Memphis: Jay Edwards with Campus Crusade for Christ at Auburn University asks that we pray for the hearts of the students he will disciple this semester — that they would be open to the Lord’s call upon their lives . Pray also that the Lord would continue to provide Jay with opportunities to meet with and encourage students as they grow as people of God . Jay is leading a group of male students in a study of the Gospel of John — please pray specifically that the Holy Spirit would continue to work in the lives of these students through this study .
