A Conversation about the Mission Trip to the Border

Please join the participants of the January mission trip to the border in the Martha Jayne

room as they share their experience and how it might inform SPC's future engagement.

Adult Education During Lent:

Kate and Ashley will lead discussion of AJ Levine’s DVD series Entering the Passion of Jesus:

A Beginner’s Guide to Holy Week. We will explore how the stories of Holy Week raise ethical

and spiritual questions for us today. As we re-read the text together we will find new

meanings and challenges.

March 1st: Jerusalem: Risking Reputation

March 8th: Teachings: Risking Challenge

March 15th: The Last Supper: Risking the Loss of Friends

March 22nd: Gethsemane: Risking Temptation

March 29th and April 5th: Lauren Ishida will invite us to explore the Passions (St. John

and St. Matthew) of J.S. Bach with a lot of listening, learning about the history of J.S. Bach

and his sacred vocal works, and a little singing.

The process of removing the Organ for rebuilding will begin this week, February 12th,

and will continue over the coming weeks. We invite you to take a peak upstairs as the

work unfolds!

Founders Circle: Everyone is invited to our next meeting of Founders Circle on February

13 at 11 o'clock in the Parlor. Our study lesson is about the Seventh Commandment, You

Shall Not Commit Adultery. This lesson helps us to understand God's desire for deep and

faithful relationships in the human family and how behavior that has no boundaries can

devastate people and communities. Jean Hrbek will be our study leader. Please come and

be a part of this active group. Lunch will be provided. Founders supports study, mission,

justice, and fellowship.

Earth Care Tip of the Week: WIRE HANGERS!? Did you know that your local Drycleaners

will re-use your undamaged hangers? Remove any plastic bags (recycle at the

supermarket) and collect the hangers with some wire around the top and bring them to

your dry cleaner with a lovely smile and see them happy and smiling back!!

Lenten Small Groups: If you are not already part of an ongoing small group, or would like

to join additional conversation for the season of Lent, we’ll offer three small groups that

will meet only during the weeks of Lent. This will be an opportunity for a small group

experience designed for the short-term and with a Lenten focus.

We are offering three small group opportunities:

Mondays 1:30-3:00PM at Kate's house on 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, and 3/30

Wednesdays 6:30-8:00PM at Heidi's house on 3/4, 3/11, 3/25, and 4/1

Sundays 2:30-4:00PM at the Manse with Ashley on 3/8, 3/15, 3/22, and 3/29

Light refreshments will be served. We invite you to sign up to join any of these groups

either on the sheets posted outside the sanctuary or by contacting the church office.

Come Join Us As We Venture into the City to See “72 Miles To Go”

Seventy two miles, that’s the space between a recently deported mother in Nogales, Mexico

and her husband and children in Tucson, Arizona. We will meet at the theater.

Date: April 25th, Saturday, 2:00PM

Place: Harold and Miriam Steinberg Theater, 111 West 46th Street (between 6th and 7th)

Cost: $59.00 (group of ten)

The Soup Kitchen Prep: The next soup kitchen prep dates will be Monday, March 2nd and

Monday, March 9th. We meet about 4:00 and are usually finished by 5:30. Feel free to come

for all or part of the time. If you'd like more information contact Barbara Curtis at

February is Black History Month

Founded by the Carter G. Woodson, he chose February for observance because of the

birthdates of Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The goal was to recognize the achievements

and the central role of African-Americans in U.S. history--though every month demands

reflection on Black History, the persistence of systemic barriers to equality, and how we

can help remove obstacles that today still prevent people of color from enjoying and living

with the same privileges as white people. On MLK day, the kids collectively participated in

a loving program that celebrated the concept that Dr. King's children "will one day live in a

nation that they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their

character." You'll see on the bulletin board their fingerprints surrounding the text of Dr.

King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

You are invited to join the children in solidarity! Stop by the CE office after service or

during the week to get inked and leave your fingerprint in harmony with theirs. The ink

wipes off immediately with a baby wipe provided, and it'll take all of a minute.

About the Organ: A great big THANK YOU to all who have contributed to the Organ Rebuilding Fund thus far! As of January 29, a total of $92,346 has been received from 47

individuals or couples. Of course we would welcome more contributions! The more that is

contributed, the more resources will be left in the Gillespie Fund for other, future projects.

If you haven’t already contributed, we hope you will give serious and prayerful

consideration to doing so.

Glück Pipe Organs will begin removing the pipes in our organ from February 12 to

February 14. If you want to know more about the organ restoration, please refer to the

letter you received and to the sheet of frequently asked questions, or speak with Noby

Ishida, our Music Director.

Have A Heart For The Hungry: Did you know that food pantries dip to their lowest in the

months of February/March and in the summer months? We are doing a food collection

campaign for the month of February. Of need are the following: dry cereal, boxed milk,

instant oatmeal, instant cereal, pancake mix (the add water kind), syrup, applesauce,

canned fruit for snacks, pudding and Jell-o (both regular and sugar free), peanut butter,

and rice. Thank you! Please put all donations by the food box in the hallway.

Cuba Trip Set

On March 16, four SPC members will travel to Cuba, to visit our Sister Congregation,

returning March 23. In anticipation of this trip, the Peace and Justice Committee has chosen

Sunday, March 1, as the day provided for Church members to visit the Fellowship Hall

after the service and write the personal cards and letters that mean so much to our Church

family and friends in San Antonio de los Baños. The group will carry them on the 16th.

Three Village Interfaith Clergy Association Public Forum on

“Politics and Religion: a Respectful Exploration of Complex Questions”

Sunday, March 1, 3:00-5:00PM: Setauket Presbyterian Fellowship Hall

The Three Village Interfaith Clergy Association invites people of any faith or spiritual

perspective (or none) to join us to explore questions and concerns that arise for all

Americans and, in particular, for clergy and congregations, at the complex intersection of

religion and politics. Through presentations, panelist conversations, large and small group

discussions we will address three topic areas. We'll lay some groundwork by defining key

words (such as respectful, politics, social justice, religion, faith), examining the concept of

separation of church and state, and clarifying the “rules” that guide activity at the place

where religion meets politics.

Next, we will look at what our religious faiths ask of individuals in their role as citizens in

our democracy’s public square: in print, at election time, in responding to legislative issues,

at rallies and marches, and in speeches and displays. In the closing segment we’ll work

together to describe the particular pressures that come to bear on members of

congregations and their clergy when we choose to engage or choose not to engage the

difficult questions and discernments that arise at the intersection of politics and religion

both within and beyond congregational walls.
