University of Oxford Open Day

THE BODLEIAN LIBRARIES
Libraries
Old Bodleian Library (Old SchoolsQuadrangle, Catte Street)
Do not miss the Bodleian during the Universitys open
days: open day visitors will be able to tour parts of the
Library free of charge from 13.30 until 16.30.
We regret we cannot allow free access to the reading
rooms (working areas of the Library) to Open Day
visitors. This is because we need to ensure these rooms
are quiet for study purposes. However, we are delighted
to offer free access to the oldest parts of the University
- the historic Divinity School and Convocation House.
These rooms form part of the Bodleian Library site, but
are not reading rooms and do not contain books.
Start your visit in the Divinity School (Old Bodleian
Library) where you can pick up a brief printed guide to
the interior of the Divinity School and to the exterior
of the Old Schools Quadrangle, Clarendon Building,
Sheldonian Theatre and Radcliffe Camera.
Visit the Exhibition Room (Schola Naturalis Philosophiae,
Old Schools Quadrangle) where our Summer Exhibition
will be on display. Admission is free.
My wit was always working: John Aubrey and theDevelopment of Experimental Science
The Bodleian Summer exhibition examines the
intellectual world of the English seventeenth-century
scientic and cultural gure, John Aubrey (1626-97).
As one of the founding fellows of the Royal Society of
London, Aubrey lived a rich life in the great decades of
the British scientic revolution. A keen mathematician,
pioneer biographer, natural philosopher and antiquary,
Aubrey manifested a broad and deep range of scholarly
interests, from the study of ancient megaliths to the
creation of a new articial language.
