6.P.2.1 Matter (continued)

• In this unit our objective is to:– Recognize that all matter is made up of atoms and

atoms of the same element are all alike, but are different from the atoms of other elements

– Where is this objective in our room?

Class in the library today…

• In just a moment, we will be walking to the library for our class today.

• You will be logging into a chrome book in the library to conduct some research

• You will receive a handout detailing your assignment

• Before we get to the library we will go over the directions together

Page 7: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 1: Article to Read….

• You will receive an article titled The Element Diet

• Read the article and answer the questions on the back

• Each question must be copied in your notebook and answered in a complete sentence

• Does anyone have any questions?

Page 8: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 2: Record these notes where we left off last class…

• Atoms = smallest building blocks of matter • = too small for us to see

remember the sewing pin: millions of atoms can fit on the head of a sewing pin

Page 9: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 2: Record these notes where we left off last class…

• Elements = made from same kind of atoms • = can not be broken down further• = pure substances

Page 10: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 2: Record these notes where we left off last class…

• Elements = 92 naturally occurring elements

Page 11: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 3: Elements in my Food….

• Get an empty cereal box• Look at the nutritional label on your box and

determine what elements are found inside• You will be using technology to help you

Page 12: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 3: Elements in my Food….

• As you find the different elements listed on your cereal box, you will write down information

• You will record the information on a handout that I give you

• Please refer to your handout as we discuss it as a class….

Page 13: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 3: Elements in my Food….

• Handout projected on the board….ELEMENT NAME PERIODIC TABLE

SYMBOL (ONLY 1 OR 2 LETTERS)

CATEGORY STANDARD STATE 1 INTERESTING FACT

Page 14: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 4: Logging into Technology…

• You will soon get a Chrome book • Log in using the procedure you used when you

took your MAP assessment or when you go to Reach

• You will get the chrome book number that matches your seat number (Seat 1 will use chrome book #1) or one will be assigned to you

• Raise your hand if you can not get logged in

Page 15: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Step 5: Interactive Website….

• Type in a search box:

• Human touch of chemistry• Click on period table • Click launch

Page 16: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Elements in my Food….

• Let’s do 1 element together…..ELEMENT NAME PERIODIC TABLE

SYMBOL (ONLY 1 OR 2 LETTERS)

CATEGORY STANDARD STATE 1 INTERESTING FACT

Page 17: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Elements in my Food….

• You are not looking for vitamins, only ELEMENTS

• The elements will be listed on the lower half of the nutritional label

• Vitamins include: A, C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B 12

• You will not find vitamins on the periodic table

Page 18: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Logging out of Technology…

• Log out using the procedure you used when you took your MAP assessment

• You will place the chrome book number back into the slot that matches your seat number (Seat 1 will return the chrome book to slot #1)

• Any questions?• I will call you up based on your row

Page 19: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Write this down…• Molecules: the smallest unit of a

substance that has 2 or more atoms joined together

Draw and label these molecules

Page 20: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Write this down…

• Molecules can be the same type of atoms bonded together

(O2 molecule = air we breathe)(H2 molecule = hydrogen)

• Molecules can be different types of atoms bonded together

(H2O = water molecule)

Page 21: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

We just learned • Elements = 92 naturally occurring elements

Page 22: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Write this down…• Atoms of the same element = same properties• Atoms of different elements = different properties

• Common elements found on Earth

Page 23: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

Warm Up- Reading Article and answering questions

• Read the article “Atoms and Molecules”• Answer the questions in your notebook (find

where you left off last class)• Very Important: each question must be

copied in your notebook and answered in a complete sentence.

Page 24: Science Class September 23 (A day) September 24 (B Day)

How well did we comprehend?• What does a diamond and a lump of coal have in common with

one another? A diamond and a lump of coal are made from the same kind of atoms (carbon atoms).

• What are different kinds of atoms called? Different kinds of atoms are called elements.

• What is a molecule? A molecule is formed when two or more atoms join together.

• How is carbon dioxide formed? Carbon dioxide is formed when coal is burned. Carbon atoms from the coal combine with oxygen in the air to form carbon dioxide (CO2)

• How many molecules can be found in 1 plastic bottle? It takes millions of atoms to make just one plastic bottle.
