FIRST COMMUNION RETREAT for children

Christian Service Initiative for youth.

Youth are invited to spend a week in Walls

working with Sacred Heart Southern

Missions (SHSM). Projects may include

roofing, building wheel chair ramps,

repairing bathrooms/kitchens, flooring, painting, etc. We

never know what the need will be.

CSI is an opportunity to live and work with other Catholic

Teens, helping people in the community and forming

bonds of friendship across our parishes. We live together,

we plan together, we eat together, we work together, we

pray together. CSI is open to high school youth

completing 9th-12th grades.

ADULT SUPERVISION NEEDED as a site supervisors,

overnight chaperones, drivers, etc. Call the church office for

more information or to volunteer one or more days/nights.

los jóvenes están invitados a pasar una semana en Walls

trabajando con las Misiones del Sagrado Corazón (SHSM).

Los proyectos pueden incluir techos, rampas para sillas de

ruedas, reparación de baños/cocinas, pisos, pintura, etc.

No sabemos cuál es la necesidad. CSI es una oportunidad

para vivir y trabajar con otros adolescentes católicos,

ayudar a las personas de la comunidad y formar lazos de

amistad en nuestras parroquias. Vivimos, planeamos,

comemos, trabajamos y oramos juntos.

CSI está abierto a jóvenes de los grados 9º a 12º.

FLORES DE MAYO (Flowers of May) is a festival held in the Philippines in the month of May in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On Sunday, May 5, at 4:00 pm we will celebrate this custom at Christ the King Church with a procession through the parking lot and a food banquet afterward. All are invited!!

TRIVIA NIGHT -- Tables are available for Trivia Night

at Christ the King on Friday, May 10th at 6:30pm.

This night is full of fun and fun facts, come test your

knowledge…….. Cost is $15/person or $25/couple.

more!) or come on your own (you are always welcomed

at one of our tables). Parish hall will open at 3:00pm for

those wishing to decorate their table. Bring your own

TO MARS AND BEYOND The amazing Vacation Bible School

space adventures will take place from

MOBILE FOOD DISTRIBUTION SPONSORED

BY SACRED HEART SOUTHERN MISSIONS

Once a month SHSM has a mobile food distribution at the

Landers Center in Southaven to help families in need in

Desoto County. SHSM serves 1500 families so it is a

massive undertaking that requires at least 75 volunteers.

SHSM needs volunteers from 1:30PM – 5:00PM.

The days are May 15th, June 19th, July 17th, August 21st,

September 12th (Thursday), October 9th, November 20th

Una vez al mes, las Misiones del Sagrado Corazón tiene una

distribución de alimentos en el Centro Landers en Southaven

para ayudar a las familias necesitadas del Condado Desoto.

SHSM sirve a 1500 familias, por lo que requiere al menos

A CALL TO HOLINESS BY

POPE FRANCIS.

60. To avoid this, we do well to keep reminding ourselves

that there is a hierarchy of virtues that bids us seek what

is essential. The primacy belongs to the theological

virtues, which have God as their object and motive. At

the center is charity. Saint Paul says that what truly

counts is “faith working through love” (Gal 5:6). We are

called to make every effort to preserve charity: “The one

who loves another has fulfilled the law… for love is the

fulfilment of the law” (Rom 13:8.10). “For the whole law

is summed up in a single commandment, “You shall love

your neighbor as yourself’” (Gal 5:14).

61. In other words, amid the thicket of precepts and

prescriptions, Jesus clears a way to seeing two faces, that

of the Father and that of our brother. He does not give us

two more formulas or two more commands. He gives us

two faces, or better yet, one alone: the face of God

reflected in so many other faces. For in every one of our

brothers and sisters, especially the least, the most

vulnerable, the defenseless and those in need, God’s very

image is found. Indeed, with the scraps of this frail

humanity, the Lord will shape his final work of art. For

“what endures, what has value in life, what riches do not

disappear? Surely these two: the Lord and our neighbor.

These two riches do not disappear!”[65]

60. En orden de evitarlo, es sano recordar frecuentemente

que existe una jerarquía de virtudes, que nos invita a

buscar lo esencial. La primicia la tienen las virtudes

teologales, que tienen a Dios como objeto y motivo. Y en

el centro está la caridad. San Pablo dice que lo que cuenta

de verdad es «la fe que actúa por el amor» (Ga 5,6).

Estamos llamados a cuidar atentamente la caridad: «El

que ama ha cumplido el resto de la ley […] por eso la

plenitud de la ley es el amor» (Rm 13,8.10). «Porque toda

la ley se cumple en una sola frase, que es: Amarás a tu

prójimo como a ti mismo» (Ga 5,14).

61. Dicho con otras palabras: en medio de la tupida selva

de preceptos y prescripciones, Jesús abre una brecha que

permite distinguir dos rostros, el del Padre y el del

hermano. No nos entrega dos fórmulas o dos preceptos

más. Nos entrega dos rostros, o mejor, uno solo, el de

Dios que se refleja en muchos. Porque en cada hermano,

especialmente en el más pequeño, frágil, indefenso y

necesitado, está presente la imagen misma de Dios. En

efecto, el Señor, al final de los tiempos, plasmará su obra

de arte con el desecho de esta humanidad vulnerable.

Pues, «¿qué es lo que queda? ¿qué es lo que tiene valor en

la vida?, ¿qué riquezas son las que no desaparecen? Sin

duda, dos: El Señor y el prójimo. Estas dos riquezas no

desaparecen»[65].

FAMILY IDEAS

The celebrant of the Mass asks God to bless us as we

are sent forth to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

With God’s help we go forth to live what we believe.

We can then bless the lives of others by our words

and actions.

God is with us always, and we can ask God

to bless us and our lives during the week. We

can also pray for God’s blessing on other

people too, especially as they face challenges

in their lives. In this way we remember that

all our blessings come from our God.

Bless your child before he or she goes to

sleep at night. Make the sign of the cross on

their forehead with your thumb. Say: May

God bless you, Father, Son and Holy spirit.

This helps children remember that God cares

about us.

FAMILY PRAYER

God of blessings, we thank you for all the blessings

that you have given our family. Thank you especially

for the gift of one another and the gift of love we

share as a family. Open our hearts to your blessings

in our world and in our lives. Amen.

NOTE TO FIRST COMMUNION FAMILIES

Blessings are important. Families can ask God’s

blessing on the child who is preparing for first

Communion. This can be done after saying grace

before meals or any time your family gathers for

prayer together. Continue to pray for your child after

First Communion, too.

mantenernos presentes ante nuestro Dios...que

The Priests of the Sacred Heart, the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas (Srs. Emily and Carolyn) and the

School Sisters of St. Francis (Srs. Margaret Sue, Rose, Ramona Ann and Julene) are giving substantial

financial assistance to the migrants at the border in TX. Sisters of Mercy and Sisters of St. Francis have

community members working full time in McAllen, Laredo and Sr. Emily’s sister, Sr. Emile, DC

(Daughter of Charity) is working in El Paso. All are serving the asylum seekers. Our information from

them is first hand reality news. Because detention centers are full, people are being arrested and given a

letter which says: You have been arrested, you have permission to travel to where sponsors are, usually

family members and you must appear at court on such and such a date.

“What can we do?”

1. PRAY Great idea but prayer usually demands ACTION.

2. Make a donation from a small sacrifice……Sr. Emily can see that it gets to the right people.

3. GO TO THE BORDER TO HELP- You would need to take your car and stay in a hotel. Sr.

Emily has the info if you would like to go to McAllen, TX.

4. Help out at home—Sacred Heart Southern Missions. More information in the gathering space.

5. Go to the MEMPHIS BUS STATION AND HELP OUT.

MARIPOSA (meaning butterfly) is the name of a group of VOLUNTEERS giving help to

asylum seekers who are mainly from Honduras or Guatemala and who have sponsors (family

members) here in the U.S. They have been dropped at bus stations in Texas and are making

their way to sponsor families. 5 or more busloads arrive daily at the Greyhound bus station.

There are 2 ways to volunteer:

A. Assist in helping the asylum seekers get onto the connecting buses in Memphis (major schedule

delays are common with the bus line) heading toward their final destination. There is no one

employed by Greyhound that speaks the language, so Mariposa is there to help and distributing

sandwiches and snacks, water, distribute clothing, diapers, toiletries etc. as needed at the Greyhound

Bus Station on Airways near the airport. There are at least 5 buses that come into the Memphis

Terminal every day including weekends. With at least 35 buses coming in the need is great for

volunteers.

B. Prepare the sack lunches given out at the bus terminal. Prepare toiletry bags, sort clothes, etc.

This is done at the First Congregational Church located at 1000 South Cooper Ave. Memphis, TN.

38104. Preparation is done in 2 shifts @ 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM every day.

Information and training is held every Tuesday night at 6.00 pm at First Congregational Church.

This session is about 90 minutes long.

Los Sacerdotes del Sagrado Corazón, las Hermanas de la Misericordia de las Américas (Hermanas Emily y

Carolyn) y las Hermanas de la Escuela de San Francisco (Hermanas Margaret Sue, Rose, Ramona Ann y

Julene) brindan asistencia financiera sustancial a los migrantes en la frontera en Texas. Las Hermanas de la

Misericordia y las Hermanas de San Francisco tienen miembros de la comunidad que trabajan a tiempo

5. Vaya a la ESTACIÓN DE AUTOBUSES GREYHOUND DE MEMPHIS Y AYUDE.

MARIPOSA es el nombre de un grupo de VOLUNTARIOS que brindan ayuda a los solicitantes de asilo

que son principalmente de Honduras o Guatemala y que tienen patrocinadores (miembros de la familia)

aquí en los Estados Unidos. Estas personas abordan autobuses en Texas y viajan hacia las ciudades en

donde viven sus patrocinadores. Diariamente 5 o más autobuses llegan a la estación de autobuses de
