Enabling people to achieve their dreams of homeownership has

been the role of MGIC for 42 years. Its role in America’s

housing industry is critical. The company makes it possible for

lenders to provide loans to borrowers who make down payments

of less than 20 percent. The essence of the nation’s leading

private mortgage insurer is captured in its tagline, ‘We don't

make home loans. We make home loans possible.”

First and foremost, MGIC Investment, through Mortgage

Guaranty Insurance Corp. (MGIC), is a private mortgage

insurer. Secondarily, MGIC Investment, through MGIC and

other subsidiaries and investments, provides numerous products

and services that enhance mortgage lenders’ ability to meet the

home loan needs of American families.

Documents in Motion

The documents printed at MGIC are a full spectrum of

statement, transactional, marketing and everyday needs of the

company. The mix includes billings, two- and three-part

carbonless forms, MI Certificates and Applications, highlight

color letters to customers and prospects, labels, and general "sys-

out" printing. Monthly volume fluctuates greatly, all printed in

three shifts, seven days a week.

“The variety of documents makes the print runs unique,”

explains Katy Hess, forms designer. “The applications are

broad-based and require highlight color, unique paper types

and a robust printer that’s flexible enough to accommodate

the work.”

“We use a wide variety of types and weights of paper,” explains

Hess. “Our requirement to print on paper from 20 to 65 lb

(bond), letter and legal sizes, and a on variety of label form

types including 16-up labels and die-cut papers–all with one

machine–can be a big challenge for printing equipment

providers.”

“We were committed to cut-sheet printing and also wanted to

duplicate our extensive highlight color print capabilities,” relates

Kathy Agg, computer operations manager. After evaluating

several options, MGIC selected the Océ Printing Systems’

PageStream 155, a 155-page-per-minute cut-sheet printer with

highlight color capability. “Our primary customer here is our

own marketing department. We felt we could expand our

capabilities with Océ technology.”

Flexible Functionality Empowers Printing at MGIC

Flexible functionality was the goal, service was the icing on the cake.

“The results began with flexibility in paper handling. The

PageStream 155 has been able to accommodate many different

types and sizes of paper stocks without jamming,” says Agg.

“It has been a key contributor to our success.”

The PageStream’s highlight color ability has been an equally

powerful addition. MGIC currently uses black, blue, red,

green, magenta and is adding more colors through Océ’s

CustomTone program which supports development of colors

based on customer requirements. For example, toner can be

created to match logos and other corporate colors, helping

ensure visual consistency across printed materials–an important

element of branding.

“We are waiting for two more colors,” says Agg. “By using the

CustomTone Program and the PageStream 155’s Quick Change

Developer Station we’re able to print on a variety of paper

stocks and produce a variety of color types very easily.”

Océ’s unique Quick Change Developer Stations (QCDS)

enables users to change the color of toner in use in as little as

four minutes. This allows MGIC easy color changes between

print jobs with minimal downtime, bring the advantages of

highlight color to bear without a time penalty. All colors of

toner can be printed in various shades to add emphasis, display

information more effectively or aid branding.

“Because we get data from the mainframe and the corporate

network we need the ability to produce PCL jobs from the

network at high-speeds and in highlight color. The

multifunctional ability of the PageStream is a real benefit,” says

Dennis Westfahl senior computer operations analyst.

Westfahl also appreciates the broad functionality of Océ’s

PRISMA architecture and the specific capabilities of the NT

spooler known as PRISMAoffice. “The ability to preview the

jobs for accuracy and the reprint capabilities that enable jobs to

be reprinted without the need for re-RIPing are particularly

helpful,” he says. “The GUI interface is easy to use and allows

us to prioritize jobs as needed.”

Such capabilities should resonate with many data centers and

in-plant printing operations. Océ’s network-ready PageStream

family of printers can accept and print jobs in a full range of

standard data streams, including PCL, Postscript, TIFF, PDF,

LCDS, IPDS, and Xerox metacode. This enables Océ printers

to operate seamlessly in mixed environments, delivering the

flexibility and control needed in demanding printing operations.

Developing a Solution

MGIC worked with several vendors while searching for the best

solution for its printing needs. According to Westfahl, “Océ

was the one that best listened to MGIC’s needs and provided

an effective solution based on what we said.”

Agg agrees. “We were able to meet our business needs from a

functionality standpoint and were able to meet our budget by

selecting the Océ solution.”

“Océ has not only listened to us, but has gone back and

provided changes we needed. What’s more, our experience

wasn’t limited to the trial and testing phase. It continues

today,” says Westfahl.Kurt Osterkorn, senior computer operations analyst, shows the Océ Quick Change Developer Station forcolor printing applications.

“Océ is there every step of the way and is always available.

As for the service–specifically on the software side–they

continue to follow-up and provide enhancements. They

managed to provide a solution that operates seamlessly in

our unique environment.”

Agg echoes this experience. “I've never had to ask service or

sales for anything twice. When we call they are right here.

That shows a real dedication by Océ to work with us. They are

interested in who we are as a company. Océ has lived up to our

ideal of "partner" in this process.”
