This supplement describes the new and enhanced features in the following NVM-2000 software versions:

The supplement also contains integration notes that provide instructions for integrating the Sam-sung DCS phone system with the NVM-2000. These notes also provide instructions for using an integration window, when you use a generic phone system with the Voice Mail.

The last section in this supplement provides instructions for using the Command Line version of the Call/Tone Adaptation Program.

Release Notes for Version 8.00

Version 8.00 Feature AvailabilityThis section of the supplement describes the new and enhanced NVM-2000 features available with Software Version 8.00.

Increased Port CapacityThe NVM-2000 now supports up to 24 voice ports.

IMPORTANTWhen you increase the capacity of the unit beyond 20 voice ports, you must remove the modem card (internal modem) from the unit, if one is already installed. A port card (providing ports 21–24) takes the place of this modem card.

However, you can still use a modem card when 20 or fewer ports are supported by the unit, and you can use an external modem along with the 24-port configuration.

Increased Client Capacity for NVM-Desktop MessagingAs an add-on option for the Voice Mail, NVM-Desktop Messaging provides on-screen Voice Mail, FAX Mail, and E-Mail capability. NVM-Desktop Messaging can now support up to 128 client workstations. Previously, the maximum supported was 64.

You must install the NVM-Desktop Messaging software on each client workstation. The number of client workstations supported by NVM-Desktop Messaging will determine the minimum amount of RAM required, as shown in the table below.

For more information about this option, see the NVM-2000 Setup Guide for NVM-Desktop Mes-saging (P/N 1752DTMINS02 or higher).

Entering LAN Parameters for NVM-Desktop MessagingAs part of the installation procedure for NVM-Desktop Messaging, you must enter the following LAN Parameters into NVM-2000:

• Server Service Number• Server IP Address• Subnet Mask (if any)

Entering LAN Parameters for NVM-Desktop Messaging (cont’d)

The procedure for entering the Server Service Number is the same as that explained in Entering LAN Parameters into NVM-2000 in the Setup Guide for NVM-Desktop Messaging (P/N 17526DTMINS02 or higher). For instructions, see this setup guide.

The procedure for entering the IP Address and Subnet Mask has changed. Beginning with software version 8.00, the Voice Mail now has a TCPIP Mod Utility for modifying these parameters. Follow the steps below to enter these parameters into NVM-2000. If the IP Address is 200.0.0.2 and the Submask is 255.255.255.0, you do not have to perform this procedure.

IMPORTANTThis procedure should be performed by your LAN manager or by someone else who is knowledge-able about configuring LANs.

1. Shut down the NVM-2000:Press SD from the Line Editor’s Main Menu, or select Shutdown Voice Mail System from the Exit menu of the Full Screen Editor.

2. After the system shuts down:Press Reset or turn the system off and on to reboot.

3. At the prompt, Starting MS-DOS…, immediately press F5 to go to the C:\> prompt.OR Select Exit Voice Mail System from the Exit menu, if you know the correct password.

4. At the C:\ prompt: Type TCPIPMOD, and press Enter.The system will display a prompt that shows you the syntax for the command and the default values:

Syntax: TCPIPMOD ip_address subnet mask [802]where: ip_address (the IP Address) would be of the form 200.0.0.2submask (the Sub-address mask) would be of the form 255.255.255.0802 optionally specifies that data xmit protocol IEEE 802.3 is being used.

The default IP Address is: 200.0.0.2

The default Subnet Mask is: 255.255.255.0

These values yield the default system configuration, but you may use the values appropriate for your own LAN.

Local Calls Handled by the Voice Mail The Voice Mail now handles message notification callouts to the following toll-free phone numbers as though they were local calls:

Callout OptionsC.I.D. Make Call Suffix DigitsYou can use the C.I.D. Make Call Suffix Digits field to enter the digits, if any, that the NVM should dial after dialing a Caller ID number. If you have Automatic Route Selection (ARS) installed, you need to place pauses in this field. The pauses will give the phone system time to dial out the digits that the Voice Mail has dialed.In this software version, you can program an “H” for hang up in this string. The “H” forces a “Blind Transfer” when a user presses MC [Make Call] while listening to a message from an outside number. Without the “H,” MC calls are made as supervised transfers. Therefore, an “H” should be used in this field for cases, such as the 384i, where the phone system cannot retrieve an MC call if the far end does not answer or is busy.DEFAULT: None

Set Up COM Port Fields on NVM-PMSi and NVM-H/M

Pms protocol mode (Set Up Serial Communication Ports on the Maintenance Menu)When you are using the Line Editor in an NVM-2000 installed with NVM-PMSi or NVM-H/M, you can select the COM Port Integration mode by entering the number or the name of the mode. For example, you would enter either 2 or PMS to select the PMS Integration mode.

Pre-Installed Voice Prompts in Four LanguagesSoftware Version 8.00 contains four languages that can be used in voice prompts and greetings: Two types of English, one Spanish, and one French.

Types of English Voice PromptsEnglish voice prompts consist of the following:

■ English Mnemonic prompts that use letters, such as To listen to a message, press L.■ English Numeric prompts that use numerals, such as To listen to a message, press 5.

ACTIVE and STORED Language SettingsACTIVE and STORED are the language settings. You may set each voice prompt language to either setting. You set a language to ACTIVE to enable the Voice Mail to use that language, or you set a language to STORED to keep it in reserve for future Voice Mail use.

The table below shows the name displayed on your screen for each type of English voice prompt, when you are selecting ACTIVE and STORED language settings.

The NVM allows you to set more than two of the four languages to ACTIVE, but the Voice Mail can use only two of them at any given time. The two languages used by the NVM are called Lan-guage 1 and Language 2. These terms apply to languages only in the ACTIVE category but not to those in the STORED category. (For instructions on switching between categories, see To select which languages are ACTIVE and STORED on page 20.)

Note: The number appearing on the screen below ACTIVE LANGUAGES or STORED LANGUAGES is used just to help you switch your voice prompt language from ACTIVE to STORED or from STORED to ACTIVE, not as an indication of Language 1 and Language 2.

Default Language SettingsBefore your software was delivered to you, certain values — called default settings — were installed by the factory in the Voice Mail. The default languages settings are ACTIVE and STORED. The table below lists the default ACTIVE settings.

The default STORED settings are Spanish and French.

If you wish, you can change these default settings, but you must be careful when you switch any language from the STORED category to the ACTIVE category. For example: If you switched the setting of Spanish from STORED to ACTIVE, you would have three “active” languages: English Mnemonic, Spanish and English Numeric. Since the NVM can support only two of these languages at a time, English Mnemonic would be Language 1, and Spanish would be Language 2.

However, if you wish the NVM to use English Numeric and Spanish instead as your active lan-guages, you must first set English Mnemonic to STORED. Then Spanish will become Language 1, and English Numeric will become Language 2.

To have the NVM mailboxes use Language 2 (English Numeric), change Default Bilingual mode in System Options and Mailbox Options in Customize Menu for each mailbox.

Using the Language Order ListThe order in which a language appears in the ACTIVE category does not determine whether it is Language 1 or Language 2 in your NVM. To find out which active language your NVM will use as Language 1 and as Language 2, see the Language Order List shown below. The names of the lan-guages are shown as they appear in the Voice Mail. The language that appears first on the list is Language 1. The language that appears second is Language 2.

Note: The information placed in parentheses next to an entry on the Language Order List shown below —such as (English Mnemonic) — is intended to clarify the entry where it appears. However, this information is not shown on your screen.

New CabinetFigures 1, 2, and 3 show the front and back of the new cabinet (P/N 17510M). Your NVM-2000 system may be encased in this cabinet rather than in the cabinet shown in the previous release notes or manual for this Voice Mail. Although the power supply in this new cabinet is functionally the same as the one used in previous cabinets, this power supply is somewhat different in appearance.

Despite these differences, you will still require a dedicated and grounded three-prong outlet (100 — 125 VAC, 60 Hz), located no more than 5 feet from the NVM system.

4-Port FAX CardWhen your NVM-2000 is using Software Version 8.00, you can install the 4-Port FAX Card (P/N 17587) shown in Figure 4. This card provides the Voice Mail with four FAX ports, which will be available for use when the FAX Card is installed and connected, and the FAX Mail/FAX-On-Demand software is installed in the NVM-2000.

Note: You cannot install both a 2-Port FAX Card (P/N 17585) and a 4-Port FAX (P/N 17587) in the same Voice Mail system.

Equipment RequirementsBefore you install and/or connect this card in your Voice Mail system, you will need to have the fol-lowing equipment:

■ One or two 4-Port FAX Cards (P/N 17587) ■ Cable supplied with FAX Card (P/N 340-036-02 REV A)■ RJ14-to-RJ11 adapter (splitter), parallel circuit adapters, and three 4-wire modular line cords

for each pair of FAX ports■ FAX Mail/FAX-On-Demand software ■ FAX Mail/FAX-On-Demand Setup Guide (P/N 17500 FXM01 or higher)

Installing the 4-Port FAX CardWith this equipment on hand, you can now use the information on the following pages to help you install and/or connect the FAX Card in your system. If your FAX Card was already installed by the manufacturer, proceed directly to Connecting the FAX Card to Your Phone System near the bottom of this page without following the install instructions.

To install the 4-Port FAX Card:1. Shut down the NVM:

Press SD from the Line Editor’s Main Menu, or select Shut Down Voice Mail System from the Exit menu of the Full Screen Editor.

2. After shutdown, turn off the power.

3. Remove and retain the screws securing the NVM cabinet cover.

4. Locate an empty card slot in which to insert the FAX Card.

5. Remove and retain the screw securing the slot cover.

6. Verify that SW501 and IRQ 10 on your FAX Card are set and strapped as shown in Figure 4 on the previous page.

7. Insert the 4-Port FAX Card into the empty slot.

8. Secure in place with the screw retained in step 5.

9. Replace the cabinet cover and the cover screws.Do not turn on system power.

10. Install the FAX-On-Demand/FAX Mail software according to the instructions in the FAX Mail Setup Guide and FAX-On-Demand Setup Guide (P/N 17500FXM01 or higher).

Connecting the FAX Card to Your Phone SystemTo connect the 4-Port FAX Card:1. Shut down the NVM, if you have not already done so:

In the Full Screen Editor, select Exit from the Main Menu, and select Shutdown Voice Mail Sys-tem, orIn the Line Editor, select SD from the Main Menu.

2. When the system is shut down, turn off the power.

3. Refer to the drawings in Figures 5 — 8 on the next four pages to help you connect the 4-Port FAX Card to your phone system.

Figure 5 shows how to parallel the circuit adapters to connect the FAX Card and Modem Card to the phone system when you are connecting four FAX ports.

However, if you are connecting only two FAX ports, you do not need to use the connections for Voice Mail Ports 3 and 4 or Channels 2 and 3 on the FAX Card.

Editing the NVM btfax.bat file for the 4-Port FAX CardIf you used the procedure on page 24 to install the 4-Port FAX Card, you must now edit a FAX file in the Voice Mail, so that the FAX Card works properly.

Note: If your FAX option was installed by the manufacturer, you do not have to perform this procedure. However, you should see the FAX Mail/FAX-On-Demand Setup Guide for programming your NVM for FAX.

To edit the NVM btfax.bat file for the 4-Port Card:1. Turn on the system power.2. Press F5 at the Starting MS-DOS prompt.

You will see the DOS prompt, such as C:\.3. Type:

cd <space> C:\FAX4. Enter btfax.bat at the C:\FAX-> prompt.

You will see the following line at the bottom of the screen:

4-Port FAX CardThe 4-Port FAX Card (P/N 17587) provides your NVM-2000 with four FAX ports. These ports are available for use in the Voice Mail when the:■ FAX Card has been installed and connected■ NVM-2000 contains the FAX Mail or FAX-On-Demand software

If two slots are available, you can install up to two 4-Port FAX Cards in this software version. The number of FAX ports that are available to your Voice Mail system depends on the number of FAX cards you installed, as shown in the table below.

Note: You cannot install both a 4-Port FAX Card (P/N 17587) and a 2-Port FAX Card (P/N 17585) in the same system.

Connecting the FAX Card to Your Phone SystemTo connect the 4-Port FAX Card:1. Shut down the NVM-2000:

Press SD from the Line Editor’s Main Menu, or select Shutdown Voice Mail System from the Exit menu of the Full Screen Editor.

2. When the system is shut down, turn off the power.

3. Use the drawings in Figures 5–8 on pages 11–14 to help you connect the 4-Port FAX Card to your phone system.

Once you have finished installing and/or connecting your 4-Port FAX Card, you can use the FAX Mail and/or the FAX-On-Demand Setup Guide to program the FAX feature.

Name Changes for Phone Systems ATT Phone Systems

The “ATT” before the names of certain phone systems has either been changed to “Lucent” or deleted from the Voice Mail Install Menu. The table below lists each of these systems by both the old name and the new name.

ProStar 56/120Availability: NVM-2004

The name for the PROSTAR 56/120 phone system has been changed on the Voice Mail INSTALL Menu to the SAMSUNG DCS/PROSTAR 56/120. Selecting this menu item will provide Voice Mail integration with either the Samsung DCS or the PROSTAR 56/120 phone system.

ROM-DOS Operating System ROM-DOS is the operating system shipped with the NVM-2000 (Software Version 8.02) and used by the unit. MS-DOS is the operating system used in previous software versions of the Voice Mail. In general, any differences between ROM-DOS and MS-DOS will not affect how you program or use the Voice Mail.

However, when you are restoring a database from a floppy disk onto the new ROM-DOS unit, you must perform this Local Restore procedure from the Full Screen Editor as follows:

1. Select Maintenance, and select Local Restore.

2. At the Select the type of data files to be processed prompt:Type D for database.You will see a message explaining what happens during a local restore and asking if you want to continue.

3. Press Y for yes.

4. At the System Restore prompt Insert the first disk of the backup set into drive A:

5. Strike a key when ready, and follow instructions on the screen.

6. If prompted to overwrite files, press A to select all files.

Rhet (Rhetorex) Parameters in Call Tone Adaptation Program

Lamp Refresh Interval (Availability: NVM-2004 only)

You can now enter a 0 (zero) for this parameter. Setting the value of the parameter to zero will disable the automatic refresh of Message Waiting Indications. You can access this timer from the Call Parameters section of Rhet Parameters in the Call Tone Adaptation Program.

Mailbox Defaults for the Portrait 824 Phone SystemWhen a Portrait 824 phone system is integrated with the NVM-2000, 65 Subscriber Mailboxes are installed. The default numbering for these mailboxes is 10 through 74.

New CabinetFigures 11, 12, and 13 show the front and back of the new cabinet (P/N 17510M). Your NVM-2000 system may be encased in this cabinet rather than in the cabinet shown in the previous release notes or in the manual for this Voice Mail. The new cabinet is functionally the same as previous cabinets, but it is slightly different in appearance.

You still require a dedicated and grounded three-prong outlet (100 –125 VAC, 60 Hz), located no more than 5 feet from the NVM system.

Editing Integration Strings for Generic Phone SystemsThis software version allows you to edit various data strings when you select Generic on the Voice Mail’s Install menu. Editing the data strings will help to ensure a smooth and successful integration of any phone system with the Voice Mail.

Using an integration window provides access to these strings. To access this window, you must shut down the Voice Mail and take the system to the DOS prompt.

For instructions on accessing and using the integration window, see Overview on page 41 in the Using the Integration Window to Integrate with a Generic Phone System section.

Selecting a Phone System for Integration with the Voice Mail

To integrate a particular phone system with the Voice Mail, you select it from an Install Menu in Voice Mail programming. The Voice Mail is then set up automatically for the integration. How-ever, you must also modify the programming in the phone system for integration with a Voice Mail system.

The System Guide may instruct you to switch between several Install menus in one model to access a particular phone system. In Software Version 9.08 of the Voice Mail, you no longer need to per-form this switching of Install Menus, because all compatible phone systems are listed on one Install menu.

To view the list of compatible phone systems from the Full Screen Editor (if available):1. From the MAIN Menu, use the arrow keys to highlight Install.

2. Press Enter.

3. Enter the password, if the system requests it.

4. Press Enter.

5. Select Install Voice Mail. You will see a list of phone systems.

6. Use the arrow key to select the phone system you want.

7. Press Enter.

8. Follow the instructions on the screen and in the System Guide to continue.

Phone Systems for IntegrationIn previous software versions, you select a phone system for integration either from Install the Voice Mail on the Install Menu or from Other Phone Systems and Language Selection.

New Phone Systems for IntegrationThe DS2000 phone system can be integrated with the NVM-2000.

Hardware ModificationsThis shuts down the Voice Mail to permit modifications to the hardware configuration of the sys-tem. If the system power is not shut off within 30 seconds after selecting this option, the system will automatically restart.

Run Support Program(accessed from the Line Editor)

This item is reserved for future use. It is item number 94 on the Install Menu.

Command Line Version of Call/Tone Adaptation ProgramCCAP is the Command Line version of the Call/Tone Adaptation Program (CAP) — a program you can use when a Rhetorex Card is installed in your Voice Mail system. Using CAP helps you mod-ify the parameters for the call tones generated by your phone system, so that you can successfully integrate the phone system with the Voice Mail.

More specifically, you can use CAP to do the following:

■ test and learn call tones■ edit the attributes of these tones

As a result, your Voice Mail will correctly identify all tones used by your phone system and rec-ognize each tone.

■ adjust the parameters used by the Rhetorex Card.

In previous software versions, you could access CAP only through the Full Screen Editor.

To use the CCAP (Command Line version of CAP), you need a laptop computer that contains standard communications software (such as ProComm Plus).

Integrating with Microsoft Exchange/OutlookBeginning with Software Version 9.08, a Voice Mail equipped with the NVM-Desktop Messaging option can integrate with Microsoft Exchange/Outlook. This integration enables you to use your Microsoft Exchange/Outlook inbox to receive and send voice messages and to receive fax mes-sages.

In order for this integration to work properly, your Voice Mail must have the NVM-Desktop Mes-saging option installed with Software Version 3.03.

Note: To view fax messages, your Voice Mail system requires the installation of the Fax Mail option.

FAX Mail and FAX2 as a Key ActionIn Software Version 9.08 when callers press a key assigned with FAX2, they will hear FAX carrier tone. Callers do not hear any FAX Mail prompts.

In previous software versions, if all FAX ports were busy when a caller pressed a key assigned with FAX2, the system would hang up. Beginning with Software Version 9.08, if all FAX ports are busy when a caller presses a key assigned with FAX2, the prompt, All FAX ports are busy, please try again later is played before the system will hang up the call.

Number of Messages with FAX MailboxesYou can now program the Number of msg field in Mailbox options for FAX Mailboxes (FAX Mail). In previous software versions, that number was fixed at 32.

Routing FAX MessagesIn previous software versions, if FAX calling tone was detected while the recipient’s personal mail-box greeting was playing, the Voice Mail would route the call to the recipient’s mailbox (FAX Mail) or to a FAX machine. Unless the FAX calling tone had been detected before the caller started to record a voice message, the FAX would not be routed.

In this software version, even if FAX calling tone is not detected until the caller starts to record a message, the Voice Mail will still route the call.

Caller IDIn previous software versions, the ability to access the Caller ID Tables depended upon what phone system is installed. (For example, Caller ID Tables are accessible when an ONYX phone system is installed.)

In this software version, if Caller ID is enabled, the tables can be programmed.

Note: The Voice Mail may not correctly interpret the phone system’s Caller ID integration strings. If not, use Generic on the Install Menu to define the phone system’s integration strings.

Dongle InstallationThis version of software requires the installation of a dongle. The dongle serves as a security mea-sure to protect the system’s software. It must be attached to the parallel port of the Voice Mail at all times for the system to function.

To install the dongle:1. If system power is on, turn it off before installing the dongle.

2. Plug the dongle into port labeled LPT1 on back of machine. Adapter is keyed to ensure proper installation. Secure Adapter in place with attached screws.

3. Turn on system power. If you properly attached the dongle to LPT1, the Voice Mail will run and display the Main Menu.

Version 9.08A Feature AvailabilityThis section of the supplement describes the new and enhanced NVM-2000 feature available with Software Version 9.08A.

Smooth Database Conversion to Version 9.08A or HigherWhen shipped, the new production units of the NVM-2000 already have Software Version 9.08A installed. With Software Version 9.08A installed, the Voice Mail database from the lower software version now translates properly and smoothly to Version 9.08A or higher. This also applies to restores from an NVM-2002 (any software level), an NVM-2003 (any software level), or an NVM-2004 (with software version 8.0x or higher).

Use of Database Conversion PatchIf you have any software version below 9.08A installed on your Voice Mail System, you need a Database Conversion Patch in order to restore a Voice Mail database from software versions below 9.08 onto a Voice Mail with Software Version 9.08 or higher. For installation instructions, see Installing the Database Conversion Patch (P/N 17510DCONPTCH01).

However, if you have a backup from an NVM-2004 with a software version lower than 8.0x but not lower than 6.10, you need to perform the following procedure from the Voice Mail with Software Version 9.08A installed:

To perform this procedure:

1. From the Main Menu, select Exit ➱ Shut down the Voice Mail System.

2. Type the system password, if requested, and press <Enter>.

3. Enter Y when you see:

Are you sure you want to SHUT DOWN the Voice Mail System (Y/N)?

4. The Voice Mail shuts down. When you are prompted to do so, turn off system power.

5. While starting DOS, press F5.

6. Type cd\VM and press Enter.

7. At C:\VM->:Type copy<space>dbx_31X.m5<space>*.xit and press Enter.

8. Enter Y for Yes when you are asked if you wish to overwrite the existing file.

9. When the copy process is finished, turn the system power off and on.

Note: At a later time, if you wish to restore a backup from an NVM-2002 (any software version), 2003 (any software version), or 2004 with software version 8.0x onto this same Voice Mail, you must perform another DOS file copy. You must shutdown the Voice Mail, and exit to DOS. At C:\VM>, type copy<space>dbx_31x.std<space>*.xlt. You must also enter Y when you are asked if you wish to overwrite the existing file.

10. When the system is finished rebooting, you may restore the backup onto your NVM-2000 with software version 9.08 or higher. For information, see the NVM-2000 System Guide (17500INS05).

WARNING

Do not turn off the Voice Mail without first shutting it down. If you do not shut down first, you may corrupt the Voice Mail database when you turn it off.

Version 10.00 Feature AvailabilityThis section of the supplement describes the new and enhanced Voice Mail features available with Software Version 10.00.

Fax Server(Availability: New feature in software version 10.00)

The Fax Server allows users to fax a document directly from an application they are using at their computer’s desktop. They can send the FAX either to a FAX machine or internally to another Sub-scriber Mailbox (through FAX Mail).

To use the Fax Server, a client workstation must have the Fax Server Printer Driver and Fax Server Client software installed. To fax a document, you then select the application’s print menu and choose Voice Mail Fax Server as the printer. From the Fax Server Setup window, you then select the recipients of your FAX.

System requirements for using the Fax Server option include:■ Voice Mail Software Version 10.00 or higher with the Fax Server option enabled.■ The Fax Mail Option installed and programmed (including a Brooktrout Fax Card).■ a LAN Card must be installed in the Voice Mail and connected.

Each Client Workstation that will have access to the Fax Server must have:■ Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0■ Fax Server Printer Driver software installed (1 disk)■ Fax Server Client Software (4 disks)■ Microsoft Outlook/Exchange installed (if the user wants access to Address Books for selecting

fax recipients).

Note: The Fax Server software is on two sets of installation disks: one for workstations with Windows 95/98 and one for workstations NT 4.0.

User FeaturesMessage Forwarding

In Software Version 10.00, Message Forwarding operates differently than it did in previous soft-ware versions. When a message is forwarded without a comment, the message sender becomes the forwarding mailbox. Beginning in Software Version 10.00, Message Notification has an additional option. You can now set up a mailbox so that when the Voice Mail notifies a user of messages, the following occurs:

After a user answers the notification call (by answering the telephone and saying “hello”), the Voice Mail automatically plays the message. The user does not have to dial any digits or codes. If the user has another message, the Voice Mail automatically plays it once the first one finishes. After all messages are played, the Voice Mail hangs up.

You can now set up an Announcement Mailbox so that it plays a recorded announcement over a paging circuit. You can program the mailbox to repeat the announcement and/or play within a specified time period. This feature is useful in retail stores, airports, etc.

Your Phone System’s Integration StringsContact the manufacturer of your phone system for a list of integration strings that the phone sys-tem sends to a Voice Mail.

If you are unable to obtain documented integration strings from the phone system manufacturer, you will have to identify these strings yourself.

To identify the integration strings that your phone system sends to the Voice Mail:1. Access the Port Activity (PA) option from the Voice Mail’s Main Menu.

2. Place a call into the Voice Mail by dialing the master number of the Voice Mail.

3. As you place the call, watch the Port Activity screen, and record the integration strings.

Note: Valid codes that can be in an integration string are: *, #, digits 0-9 and letters A through Z.

4. Place other types of calls into the Voice Mail, and repeat step 3 for each call. For example, in step 2 you called the Voice Mail by dialing the master number. Try to call the Voice Mail this time by dialing a Voice Mail port. In addition, call a busy or ring-no-answer extension that is forwarded to Voice Mail.

5. Set up various calls, so that the Voice Mail will not receive some digits in the integration strings. For example, place an outside call into the Voice Mail, allow the Voice Mail to answer, and then hang up. Watch the Port Activity screen, and record the digits that the Voice Mail received. See Error Correction on page 48.

The examples on the following pages will show you different types of calls and features to use.

Reducing the Integration Strings When possible, you need to reduce the number of digits in the integration strings that your phone system sends to the Voice Mail. Reducing the length of the strings helps to eliminate the possibility of an error.

You also need to assign Voice Mail operation codes to the strings. These codes enable the Voice Mail to interpret the digit strings sent from the phone system.

To reduce the number of digits in your integration strings and assign Voice Mail operation codes: 1. Use the following special reducing codes to simplify each of your Integration Strings.

Optional/repeated digits are enclosed in brackets. Each code can have up to 20 digits. Available codes and their definitions are:

Test the Voice Mail After you integrate with a generic phone system, you should perform the following test to check the operation of the Voice Mail.

Test failures may indicate that the Voice Mail is unable to recognize your phone system’s tones.

Note: The Voice Mail uses standard local Bell tones.

To test Voice Mail operation:1. Access the Port Activity (PA) option from the Main Menu.

As you perform the following steps, watch the Port Activity screen.

2. Call into the system on a trunk you have assigned to the Voice Mail.

3. Listen for the Main Greeting (Thank you for calling. If you are calling from a Touch Tone phone, please dial the number you wish to reach or dial 0 for assistance.)

4. Dial an extension number. If your call is not transferred to the correct extension or if you are disconnected, then the Voice Mail may not recognize your phone system’s tones.

Using the Call/Tone Adaptation Program

What Does CCAP Do?CCAP is the Command Line version of the Call/Tone Adaptation Program (CAP). In this document, any reference to CAP also applies to CCAP.

Using the CAP software program helps you to modify the parameters for the call tones generated by your phone system, so that you can successfully integrate the phone system with the Voice Mail. More specifically: You can use CAP to do all of the following, after you have connected the laptop to COM1 of the Voice Mail:■ test and learn call tones■ edit the attributes of these tones■ adjust the parameters used by the Rhetorex Card.

COMMAND-LINE CAP V2.01 refers to the Line Editor — the type of editing mode that you use to program and run this version of CAP. When using the Line Editor, you enter the command for the menu option you are selecting at the prompt sign (->) right below the menu. Often, you also need to press Enter after your command entry. (In this case, it will be so noted in these instruc-tions.)

When CAP is running in your Voice Mail system, you can first use this program to test the call tones in your phone system to see whether or not the Voice Mail will recognize them. If testing determines that the Voice Mail does not recognize any tone, you then use CAP to “learn” it.

During the Learn Program, CAP scans the attributes of a tone and stores them in the Filter Table. Storing tone attributes in the Filter Table ensures that the Voice Mail will be able to recognize any tone that CAP has previously learned and distinguish between any two tone types, such as busy tone and ring tone. Your Voice Mail will also be able to identify correctly all tones used by your phone system and recognize each tone during a call. (See Chapter 2 for instructions about testing and learning tones.)

When to Use CAP or CCAPYou must use CAP if you have installed the Voice Mail for a Generic phone system and the Auto-mated Attendant will be set up for screened or monitored transfers — called TRFs or MTRFs in the Dial Action Table.

You will probably want to use CAP to learn any tones that are not recognized by the Voice Mail, because the manufacturer’s tone attributes may differ from those in the Filter Table. (For instruc-tions about editing tones, see Chapter 3.)

If you wish, you can also use CAP to adjust the filters for other phone systems that may be inte-grated on your Voice Mail and modify the Global, Channel, and Call Parameters for the Rhetorex Card. (For instructions about adjusting filters, see Chapter 3. For instructions about editing Rhetorex Parameters, see Chapter 4.)

Required Setup for CCAPBefore starting CCAP, you will need to install a Rhetorex Card in your Voice Mail system. You will also need to connect the Voice Mail to both of the following:

Connecting a Laptop Computer

To connect the Voice Mail to a laptop computer, using a null modem RS-232 cable:1. Connect the laptop computer to COM 1 on the Voice Mail.

Figure 1 shows an example of how the laptop is connected to the Voice Mail. The default baud rate for COM 1 on the Voice Mail is 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.

Redisplaying a CCAP MenuEach CCAP prompt usually appears right below its menu, like CCAP MAIN MENU-> and the CCAP MAIN MENU shown on the previous page. But sometimes you will see only the prompt but not its menu. If you want to see the command for the menu option to enter at the prompt, redis-play the menu as explained below:

To redisplay the menu:1. Press H (Display Help Menu) and Enter.

2. Select an item on the HELP MENU, which is related to the menu you want to display.

3. At the prompt displayed below the HELP MENU:Enter the command code for the menu selection, and press Enter.

Testing TonesYou use the CCAP Test Procedure to test the tones generated by your phone system, in order to see whether the Voice Mail will recognize them. The procedure tests busy tone, ring tone, reorder tone, transfer tone, and dial tone (see the descriptions of these tones starting on page 76). Other types of tones that can be tested will depend on which phone system is installed in your Voice Mail system. (To find a complete list of the tone types in your phone system, refer to your phone system manual.)

During testing, CCAP compares the tones in your phone system with those stored in a library of CO (Central Office) tones and internal tones. If the attributes of the tone being tested match those of a stored tone, the Voice Mail will recognize the tone in your phone system. But if the attributes of the tone being tested don’t match, you will have to use CCAP to learn the tone. (For instructions on using the CCAP Learn Procedure, see Learning Tones on page 79.

Learning TonesFirst, you use the CCAP Test Procedure to test all the tones in your phone system. (For instructions about using the CCAP Test Procedure, see Testing Tones on page 72.) Then you use the CCAP Learn Procedure to learn only the tones that failed their tests.

During the Learn Procedure, CCAP performs the following actions in the order specified below:

1. Scan a tone’s frequencies, cadence, and other attributes.

2. Save them in a tone record, which is stored in the CCAP tone database.

3. Insert the tone's frequencies in the Filter Table (if they are not already there by default).Voice Mail will recognize only those tones whose frequencies are stored in the Filter Table.

Once the CCAP Learn Procedure is performed on these “failed tones”, the Voice Mail will then recognize them during a call.

To learn tones:1. Start up CCAP (see Starting Up CCAP on page 66).

2. Set up an extension to produce each tone you want CCAP to learn.

3. At CCAP TONE MENU->:Press H (Display Help Menu) and Enter to display a HELP SCREEN.

On the message, OK means that CAP learned the tone and placed it in the Filter Table. Next to OK, you will see the one or two frequencies associated with the tone, such as Freq 1/2 above. You may also see a cadence, if any, expressed in milliseconds.

But NG (No Good) — instead of OK — means that CAP could not learn the tone. On a NG message, CAP displays an error message explaining why it could not learn the tone. Responding to Error MessagesCCAP error messages are listed below in alphabetical order. Each message includes a brief expla-nation of the error condition that caused CCAP to give you the message. Most messages also rec-ommend the actions you should take to correct the error condition. Several error messages involve incorrect or missing entries in the Filter Table. (For more information about the Filter Table and instructions about how to use it, see Using the Filter Table on page 100.)

If you receive a message that is not listed below, note the message and call CTL.

Could not Add Frequency 1/2There was no room in the Filter Table for the learned frequency, so that CCAP could not insert it. Make sure that Freq. Alignment is enabled and then run the CCAP Learn Procedure again. (For CCAP Learn instructions, see Learning Tones earlier in this chapter.)

If you still get the message, do this:

1. Access the Filter Table. (See Using the Filter Table on page 100 for instructions.)

2. Make a note of the filters for the type of tone you tried to learn. For Terminating Tones, write down Filters 1–4. If you tried to learn a Terminating Tone, you are going to have to remove a frequency from the Terminating Tones in the Filter Table list.

3. Access a tone record for a dual-frequency tone. Use Edit on the Tones menu.

4. Find a tone that has a frequency that matches one of the frequencies in your Filter Table list.

5. Set that frequency to zero for each tone that has this frequency as part of the tone. It is a good idea to have the zero listed in a Frequency 2 field, if any.

6. Delete from the Filter Table the frequency that you set to zero in Step 5.

7. Have CCAP relearn the tone that gave you the Could not Add message. (For CCAP Learn instructions, see Learning Tones earlier in this chapter.) After learning the tone, CCAP will add it to the Filter Table. If not, call CTL.

8. Retest all of the tones. (For instructions, see Testing Tones on page 72.) If any fail the test, call CTL.

Error cannot save data, no tones definedThere are no tone records in the database. To create a tone database, you must use the CCAP Learn Procedure. (For instructions, see Learning Tones on page 79.)

Filter adjustment recommendedCCAP determined that the filter parameters need to be modified for better tone detection. Enable Filter Adjust on the TEST TONES screen (shown on page 74), and run the test again. (For a description of Filter Adjust, see page 77.)

For example, if you get this message after testing a busy tone, it means that the tested busy tone does not match any of the busy tones in the Filter Table. For the Voice Mail to recognize the "Failed" tone, you will have to use CCAP to learn that tone. (For instructions, see Learning Tones in this chapter.)

Failed - Detected XXXXIf the tone being tested is a non-cadence tone, such as dial tone, adjust Quick Count for the dial tone in the database before doing the CCAP Learn Procedure. To adjust Quick Count for a stored tone, select Edit on the Tones menu. (For a definition of Quick Count, see page 97.)

Freq X and Freq Y are within 40 HzFrequency X and Frequency Y are so close in value that you may not need to store both of them in the tone database. Enable Freq. Alignment, and run the CCAP Learn Procedure again. (For a description of Freq. Alignment, see page 84.)

Freq 1/2 is not an active Frequency. Frequency 1 or Frequency 2 is not in the Filter Table. To have CCAP save any changes to the tone record, a frequency must appear in both the tone record and the Filter Table. Before inserting a tone frequency in the Filter Table, CCAP must learn the tone with the CCAP Learn Procedure. (For instructions, see Learning Tones earlier in this chapter.)

Freq 1/2 is not a termination frequencyFrequency 1 or Frequency 2 is listed as a Termination Tone in the tone record, but this frequency is not associated in the Filter Table with Filters 1–4. Any changes made to the tone record cannot be saved, unless the tone's frequencies also appear in the Filter Table under Filters 1–4. (For instructions about adding the missing frequency to the Filter Table, see To add a tone frequency in Chapter 3.)

Frequency scan did not completeFrequency scan did not complete, because the user aborted the CCAP Learn Procedure.

Off (or Off2) min is greater than Off (or Off2) maxThe value for minimum Off time for the learned tone is greater than the value for the maximum Off time. Select Edit on the Tones menu, and adjust these values, so that the minimum Off time is less than the maximum Off time.

On (or On2) min and/or On (on On2) max is equal to zeroThe value for the minimum and/or maximum On time for the learned tone is zero. This value must be greater than zero, so that the Voice Mail will consider that the tone exists. Select Edit on the Tones menu, and change the On time value to a positive value.

On (or On2) min is greater than On (or On2) maxThe minimum On time value for the learned tone is greater than the maximum On time value. Select Edit on the Tones menu and adjust these values, so that the minimum On time value is less than the maximum On time value.

Tone table fullThe Filter Table already contains 63 tones — the maximum number of tones that it can hold. Therefore, there is no room for the new tone that CCAP tried to learn and insert. Use CCAP to delete a tone from the Filter Table, so that there is enough space for CCAP to add the new tone. Viewing, Editing or Deleting Tone RecordsA tone record is a list of a tone’s frequencies, cadences, and other attributes. After using the Learn Procedure to learn a tone, CCAP adds the record for that tone to the database. CCAP always places the records for learned tones in the database right after the records for default tones. The CCAP database can store up to 63 tone records.

For a GENERIC phone system:Since the tones in a GENERIC phone system often match the CO tones of the same name, CCAP provides a tone record for the CO busy tone, ring tone, reorder tone, dial tone, and transfer tone. CO tone matching reduces the number of tones that CCAP has to learn, before the Voice Mail will correctly recognize every tone in your phone system. (CCAP also provides a tone record for the FAX tone and transfer tone.)

For non-GENERIC phone systems:CCAP provides a tone record for any tones that are specific to that phone system.

For any phone system integrated with the Voice Mail:You can use CCAP to view, edit, or delete any tone record stored in your Voice Mail system. If CCAP has difficulty learning a tone, you may need to edit the record for the tone. If CCAP has learned the same tone more than once, you may need to delete extra tone records. Before editing or deleting a tone record, you will probably want to view its attributes.

Using the Filter TableThe Filter Table is a database that contains the frequencies for internal tones and CO tones, along with other attributes of these tones. The table also contains up to 12 filters — one for each tone fre-quency. The term Filter Table refers to the place where these filters and their tone frequencies are stored.

To help it recognize tones during call processing, the Voice Mail refers to this database of tones as follows:

1. CAP scans any tone that failed the CAP Test (described on page 72) and stores the tone attributes in the Filter Table.

2. Later when the Voice Mail interprets the tone during call processing, the system will compare the attributes of the tone with those stored in the table by CAP and then recognize any tone where the two sets of attributes match.

Termination Tones vs. Non-termination TonesA Filter Table tone may be either a Termination Tone or a Non-termination Tone:■ A Termination Tone is comprised of one or two terminating frequencies, which are assigned to

Filters 1–4 (shown below in the left column of the Filter Table). ■ A Non-termination Tone is comprised of any combination of terminating and non-terminating

tone frequencies; it may be stored in any of the filters in the table.

Role of Termination Tones in Call ProcessingBusy Tone, Reorder Tone, Dial Tone, and Transfer Tone are the standard Termination Tones in your phone system. In addition, some phone systems have a Fax Tone.

During call processing, any Termination Tone plays an important role in your Voice Mail communi-cations. After detecting one of the standard Termination Tones, the Voice Mail will terminate the call. After detecting a Fax Tone, the Voice Mail will either transfer the call to a fax-detect dial string (if any) or hang up.

To add a tone frequency:You may want to add a tone frequency to one of the filters in the Terminating Frequencies section of the Filter Table. This section contains slots for only four filters. So if all of the slots are already filled, you must first remove a frequency in order to make room for the new one. To do this, it is recommended that you find and then “factor out” an uncommon frequency for the tone as follows:

To find an uncommon frequency:1. Examine each tone in your phone system

(see To edit a tone record on page 36 for instructions).

2. Write down the values of Frequency #1 and Frequency #2 for each of the Termination Tones.

3. Select a frequency that appears only once on your list—preferably one for Frequency #2.

To factor out the uncommon frequency:■ Replace the value of that frequency with a 0.

Editing Global ParametersGlobal Parameter values control Voice Mail operations across all ports in your system. The default value for any Global Parameter depends on which phone system is installed. If necessary, you can edit the value for each of these Global Parameters — Pause Duration, Duration of Outdialing Dtmf, Interdigit DTMF Interval, and Min Duration of Loop Current — according to the values recommended in the description for the parameter. But do not change any other Global Parameter value unless advised to do so by the Voice Mail manufacturer.

Minimum Silence DurationThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of silence, before the Voice Mail will detect and report the sound-to-silence transition. This value is expressed in millisec-onds.

Duration of Outdialing DtmfThe value for this parameter determines the duration of DTMF tones, while the Voice Mail is dialing out. In most phone systems, the default value is 10 (100 ms). Values are entered in increments of 10 ms. However, if receiving DTMF tones requires a longer duration than the default, you can reset this parameter to a value between 11 and 20.

Interdigit Dtmf IntervalThe value for this parameter determines the interdigit interval for the DTMF dial out. In most phone systems, the default is 10 (100 ms). Values are entered in increments of 10 ms, and the recommended value range is 5 through 20.

Minimum Duration Of Loop CurrentThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of loop current off, before the Voice Mail will detect the pulse drop. In most phone systems, the default value is 40 (400 ms). But if the connected phone system is sending a loop disconnect shorter than the default, you may change this value. Values are entered in increments of 10 ms, and the recommended value range is 5 through 50.

Editing Channel Parameters (cont’d)The following describes each parameter displayed on the CHANNEL PARAMETERS menu (see sample on page 110).

DTMF Detect while Msg PlayingThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of a DTMF tone, before the Voice Mail will detect DTMF during the message playback. Standard DTMF tones are sup-posed to last for at least 50 milliseconds. If the DTMF source is producing tones of a shorter duration than this value, the Voice Mail may not recognize them during call processing when some cell phones, cordless phones, or other manufacturers’ phones are used.

Values represent increments of 16 ms, and the recommended value range is 2 to 4. Any value below this range may result in talkoff experienced by the system. Any value above this range may not be recognized as DTMF tone by the Voice Mail.

DTMF Detect Non-Playing of MsgThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration in milliseconds of a DTMF tone, before the Voice Mail will detect DTMF when a message is not playing.

Values represent increments of 16 ms, and the recommended value range is 2 to 4. Any value below this range may result in talkoff experienced by the Voice Mail. Any value above this range may not be recognized as DTMF tone by the Voice Mail.

Note: DTMF Detect while Msg Playing and DTMF Detect Non-Playing of Msg detect DTMF tone under the reverse conditions of message playing. Since they are closely related, however, changing the value for one parameter may affect the other parameter. So if you plan to change the values for both parameters, it is recommended that you first change the value for DTMF Detect while Msg Playing and then listen to see if this change has produced the desired result. If not, change the value for DTMF Detect Non-Playing of Msg.

Call Progress DelayThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of the delay between the dial-ing of a digit string by the user and the beginning of PCPM analysis by the Voice Mail. This value is entered in multiples of 10 milliseconds.

PCPM Analysis Complete IntervalThe value for this parameter determines the duration of the minimum interval without signal, before the Voice Mail will post a PCPM Analysis Complete event to the Event Queue. This value represents increments of 10 milliseconds.

Loop Current ValidThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of the delay after the dialing of a digit string, before the Voice Mail will consider the loop current drop as an answer. This value represents increments of 10 milliseconds.

Loop Current DelayThe value for this parameter determines the minimum delay after a loop current drop, before the Voice Mail will post a PCPM Analysis Complete event to the Event Queue. This value is entered in multiples of 10 milliseconds.

VoxThe value for this parameter determines whether the Voice Mail will optimize for detecting signal or voice. The setting for signal optimization is 1. The setting for voice optimization is 2. In most phone systems, the default is 2.

Continuous Signal DurationThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of continuous signal (sound), before the Voice Mail will post a PCPM Analysis Complete event to the Event Queue. This value is entered in multiples of 10 milliseconds.

Number of NON-ringback cyclesThe value for this parameter determines the minimum number of NON-ringback cycles that must occur, before the Voice Mail will post a PCPM Analysis Complete event to the System Event Queue.

Glitch DurationThe value for this parameter determines the maximum duration for a loss of sound energy, which the Voice Mail will consider to be a glitch. When determining a glitch, the Voice Mail ignores any fluctuation for a duration below this value, because it considers the signal variation to be a trivial error. This value represents increments of 10 milliseconds.

During the Learn Procedure, you may see an error message stating that the on-time or off-time is less than the value of Glitch Duration. If you see this message, reduce the Glitch Duration value to at least 20 less than the value for the on-time or off-time that is creating this conflict.

Spike DurationThe value for this parameter determines the maximum duration for a pulse of sound energy, which the Voice Mail will consider to be a spike. When determining a spike, the Voice Mail ignores any fluctuation for a length of time below this value, because it considers the signal variation to be a trivial error. This value represents increments of 10 milliseconds.

During the Learn Procedure, you may see an error message stating that the on-time or off-time is more than Spike Duration. If you see this message, increase the Spike Duration value to at least 20 greater than the value for the on-time or off-time that is creating this conflict.

Percent Off Cycle Variance (Above)The value for this parameter determines the percent variance allowed during an OFF period above the previous OFF period, when you are comparing the current cycle to the previous one.

Percent On Cycle Variance (Above)The value for this parameter determines the percent variance allowed during an ON period above the previous ON period, when you are comparing the current cycle to the previous one.

Percent On Cycle Variance (Below)The value for this parameter determines the percent variance allowed during an ON period below the previous ON period, when you are comparing the current cycle to the previous one.

Voice Analysis Detection The value for this parameter determines whether voice analysis detection will be set for enabled or disabled. The setting for enabled is 4. The setting for disabled is 2.

Maximum Answer AnalysisThe value for this parameter determines the maximum allowable duration of answer analysis, after the Voice Mail has detected an answer. This value represents increments of 10 millisec-onds.

Answer Silence DurationThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of the silence, before the Voice Mail will detect an answer. This value is usually entered in multiples of 10 milliseconds. An entry of “-1” will disable this parameter.

Maximum Voice DurationThe value for this parameter determines the maximum duration of silence, before the Voice Mail will detect an answer. This value represents increments of 10 milliseconds.

Voice GlitchThe value for this parameter determines the maximum duration for a loss of sound energy, which the Voice Mail will consider to be a glitch while performing PVC analysis. The Voice Mail ignores any fluctuation for a length of time below this value, because it considers the sig-nal variation to be a trivial error. This value is entered in multiples of 10 milliseconds.

Voice SpikeThe value for this parameter determines the maximum duration for a pulse of sound energy, which the Voice Mail will consider to be a spike before performing PVC analysis. This value represents increments of 10 milliseconds, so that a value of 8 would be 80 milliseconds.

A legitimate change in voice level is one that lasts longer than the Voice Spike duration. After recognizing a legitimate change in voice level, the Voice Mail will begin PVC analysis.

Suppose that the screened transfer calls (TRFs) in your Voice Mail are being released, before they can be answered at the called extension. This phenomenon may indicate that the phone system connected to the Voice Mail is producing an erratic ring cadence and that the Voice Mail is misinterpreting the spike as the call being answered.

If you are experiencing this problem, raise the value of Voice Spike to 8. Our experience has shown that raising the value of Voice Spike as suggested has cleared up most occurrences of this problem.

Editing Call ParametersCall Parameters values control how the Voice Mail will process a call. Unless otherwise noted, the default value for each Call Parameter depends on which phone system is installed.

You will see some of these parameters, when you select Customize and System Options. If a parameter has one value in System Options and a different value as a Call Parameter, the System Options value will override the Call Parameter value.

Although you can edit a Call Parameter value, you really shouldn’t change any of these values unless advised to do so by the Voice Mail manufacturer or by the text on the following pages, which describes the Call Parameter whose value you may want to change.

Dtmf TimeoutThe value for this parameter determines the time interval in seconds, allowed between the DTMF digits dialed by a caller and the Voice Mail timing out. This value represents incre-ments of 10 seconds.

Terminate on Loop Drop The value for this parameter determines whether or not the Voice Mail will terminate the call, as soon as it detects a loop current drop.

A setting of “1” will cause the Voice Mail to terminate the call. A setting of “2” will cause the Voice Mail not to terminate the call.

Incoming Rings Port 1 - 64 The value for each of the parameters in this group determines the minimum number of com-plete ring cycles, before the Voice Mail will answer an incoming call on any port from 1 up to the maximum number of Voice Mail ports in your system.

Incoming rings are the rings that present an incoming call to the Voice Mail. Incoming calls include calls made by internal callers to check on their messages as well as external calls into the Voice Mail system.

PCPM Terminate CallThe value for this parameter determines whether or not the Voice Mail will release the port, whenever it detects call progress tones. By releasing the port, the Voice Mail terminates the call that entered on that port. A “1” setting tells the Voice Mail to release the port. A “0” set-ting tells the Voice Mail not to release the port.

Auto Gain ControlThe value for this parameter determines whether Automatic Gain Control will be enabled or disabled. A “0” setting will enable Auto Gain Control. A “1” setting will disable it.

Make Pause SilentThe value for this parameter determines whether a pause will be expanded with silence or with white noise. A “1” setting will expand the pause with silence. A “0” setting will expand it with white noise.

Minimum Message LengthThe value for this parameter determines the minimum length of time in seconds for any mes-sage that the Voice Mail will keep. The Voice Mail will discard any message shorter than this length.

Call Progress DelayThe value for this parameter determines the minimum time interval that the Voice Mail will wait before beginning the PCPM analysis for making calls into the integrated PBX. This value represents increments of 55 milliseconds, so that a “1” setting would cause the Voice Mail to wait 55 milliseconds.

No Answer RingsThe value for this parameter determines the minimum number of ringback cycles that must occur, before the Voice Mail will regard the call as not answered and then report the no-answer condition to the Voice Mail application.

Conversation LengthThe value for this parameter determines the maximum amount of time allowed for the Voice Mail to record a conversation. This value represents increments of 10 seconds, so that a “1” setting would cause the Voice Mail to record a 10-second conversation. The default setting is usually 3600.

Lamp Refresh IntervalThe value for this parameter determines the time interval between one message waiting lamp update and the next update. In most phone systems, this value defaults to 900 seconds, entered in multiples of 10. To enable Lamp Refresh Interval, the recommended value range is from 1 through 7200. Setting this parameter to 0 will disable lamp updates.

Prompts ADPCM Digitization RateThe value for this parameter determines the ADPCM digitization rate for prompts. The default value in most phone systems is “1”, which equals 32kb/sec. Instead of this default value, you can use one of the following:

2 = 24kb/sec

3 = 64kb/sec

4 = 128kb/sec

5 = Oki 24kb/sec

6 = Oki 32kb/sec

Welcome Prompt DelayThe value for this parameter determines the length of the delay between the caller dialing in and the Voice Mail answering the call by playing a welcome message. This value represents increments of 55 milliseconds, so that a “1” setting would cause the Voice Mail to delay for 55 msec. The default setting is 36. Enabling Welcome Prompt Delay is useful for any system that does not have an integration protocol, such as EK2260.

Use Sound As Dial ToneThe value for this parameter determines how the Voice Mail will identify dial tone. When this parameter is set to “1”, the Voice Mail will treat any sound as dial tone. When this parameter is set to “2”, the Voice Mail will use the tone table to detect dial tone. The default is 2 on most phone systems.

But suppose that the Voice Mail cannot detect the phone system’s dial tone when Use Sound As Dial Tone is set to “2” and that you have already attempted unsuccessfully to use the CCAP Learn Program to recognize dial tone. Then change this value to 1.

Note: If you change this value to “1”, you must next change the Dial Tone String Call Parameter to “S” for sound. Then in all Voice Mail programming options where a “W” was programmed, change every “W” to an “S” systemwide. (For more information about Dial Tone String, see page 122.)

Compression Rate For PromptsThe value for this parameter determines the number of kilobits in the prompt file per second of speech. Valid settings are 3000 (representing 24 kbits/sec) or 4000 (representing 32 kbits/sec). The default is 4000 in most phone systems.

Prompt Delay After DialingThe value for this parameter determines the minimum time interval that the Voice Mail will wait before prompting the caller who dialed in. This value represents increments of 55 milli-seconds, so that a “1” setting would cause the Voice Mail to wait 55 msec. The default setting is usually 9.

Dial Tone DurationThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of the dial tone sound, before the Voice Mail will recognize the sound as dial tone. This value represents increments of 55 milliseconds, so that a “1” setting would cause the Voice Mail to wait 55 msec. The default set-ting is usually 9.

Duration Of On HookThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of onhook time, before the Voice Mail will recognize the onhook condition. This value represents increments of 55 milli-seconds, so that a “1” setting would cause the Voice Mail to wait 55 milliseconds before recog-nizing the onhook condition. The recommended value range is 1 through 73. The default setting is usually 36. You can change this value, if your phone system requires a Voice Mail port to be onhook for a specified duration before processing the next incoming call.

Default Gain SettingThe value for this parameter determines the setting for Default Gain. In most phone systems, the default is 0. But you can raise this value, if the level for system prompts, system greetings, mailbox greetings or recordings is considered to be too low. The recommended range is from 1 through 7.

Monitored Pause DurationThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of the monitored pause (M) in the dial string, before the Voice Mail will recognize the pause as a monitored pause. The rec-ommended value range is 50 through 400, entered in multiples of 10 milliseconds, so that a set-ting of “1” would cause the Voice Mail to wait 10 msec before recognizing the monitored pause. The default setting is 200.

PCPM Pause DurationThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration of the PCPM pause in the dial string, before the Voice Mail will recognize the pause as a PCPM pause. This value represents increments of 55 msec, so that a “1” setting would cause the Voice Mail to wait 10 msec before recognizing the PCPM pause. The default setting is 400.

Unscreen Transfer DelayThe value for this parameter determines the minimum duration that the Voice Mail will wait for an unscreened transfer before going onhook. The recommended value range is 1 through 73, where 1 = 55 ms. The default setting is usually 4.

If the Voice Mail is programmed for unscreened transfers and the phone system requires a brief pause before going onhook to complete this transfer, then you can raise this value to equal the time needed. In some phone systems, this delay is required so that the proper integration will be sent when the call returns to the Voice Mail.

Use Accucall Tone TableThe value for this parameter determines whether or not the Voice Mail will use a tone table cre-ated by Accucall. If the setting is “1”, the Voice Mail will use the tone table. If the setting is “2”, the Voice Mail will not use it. The default setting is usually “2.”

SMDI Aging TimeThe value for this parameter determines the maximum length of time in seconds that SMDI (Simplified Message Desk Interface) will hold a received packet, before the Voice Mail will consider the packet to be outdated. SMDI is the serial interface between the Voice Mail system and the phone system, which provides information about each call that enters the Voice Mail.

In most phone systems, the default is 12, but you can change this value if your Voice Mail is experiencing either of the following:

1. The Voice Mail port receives ringing, but the serial port does not receive an SMDI packet to match the ringing within this time frame.

2. The serial port receives an SMDI packet that it delivers to the Voice Mail, but there is no call on the Voice Mail port for which the packet was intended within this time frame.

Note: Excessive delay in receiving packets or ringing to the directed Voice Mail port within the 12-sec default time frame shows that you need to increase this value. However, a need to increase this value may also indicate problems with the serial interface or with the connected phone sys-tem. It is recommended that you investigate these problems first before changing this value. The recommended value range for the changed setting is 13–30.

SMDI Message Desk NumberThe value for this parameter determines the message desk number of valid SMDI packets, which will be presented to the Voice Mail.

If you are using a Fujitsu 9600 phone system, set this value to 0. But if you are using SMDI through Centrex, set this parameter to a value from 0 through 63, after first consulting with your local Centrex carrier to obtain the proper message desk number for your Voice Mail.

SMDI LTN Port 1 - 64The values for each of the parameters in this group determine the logical terminal number (LTN) of any Voice Mail port from 1 to the maximum number of ports used for SMDI calls in your system.

In most cases, this value does not need to be changed,. However, if you are using Centrex, you may want to ask your Centrex carrier which are your logical terminal numbers.

To change an SMDI port value:1. At Enter choice:

Flash StringThe value for this parameter determines which string must be dialed in order to perform a hookflash (F).

Dial Tone StringThe value for this parameter determines what character should be inserted in the string, so that the Voice Mail will detect a dial tone.

The default is a “W” (Wait) in most phone systems. But if you have already changed the Use Sound As Dial Tone Call Parameter to use sound (S) as dial tone, you must now change this value to an “S” (Sound). Then change every instance of a “W” to an “S”, when you program System Parameters in the Voice Mail. (For more information about Use Sound As Dial Tone, see page 118.)

SMDI Ext. Digit SizeThe value for this parameter determines the maximum quantity of significant digits that the Voice Mail will consider as a valid length for an SMDI extension number. You must use this field, when a PBX or a Centrex is connected to the Voice Mail.

The recommended value range is 1 through 7. The default is 4 in most phone systems.
