NEWS

Following announcements from the Secretary of State for Transport Phillip Hammond that he is seriously considering changing the frequency of MOTs from 3.1.1. to 4.2.2. the NTDA has stepped up its campaign to lobby Parliament of the folly of such a move.

A meeting with Mike Penning, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, last month, was attended by NTDA and other Trade Associations, where the case for maintaining the current 3.1.1. regime was put to the Minister.

The NTDA believes that a change to the frequency is a dangerous and retrograde step, which would lead to job losses in the tyre and garage trade, more pollution and an increase in accidents, injuries and deaths on our roads.

In a letter to members, companies are being encouraged to make their local MP aware of the potential dangers and pitfalls of 4.2.2. and urging him or her not to back it. Members were advised that this can be done via the website www.writetothem.com which, when you type in your postcode, gives you details of your District Councillor, County Councillor, MP and MEP.

A click on your MP’s name opens a window where you can write your message. The site says that it is a waste of time writing to anyone other than your own MP, as this will be ignored. It also urges you to write your own message, rather than cut and paste from an e-mail or article, as copied and pasted messages are blocked by the website.

Members were reminded of the main criticisms of 4.2.2. namely...

• Tyres need replacing at intervals and the MOT test is one of the few times that many are examined.

• They are a safety-critical component, which are, sadly, all too often neglected.

• There are already 2.3 million tyre-related MOT failures a year and extending the testing period would increase this figure as well as making our roads more dangerous.

• A report for the DfT in 2008 looked at MOT frequency and concluded that 4.2.2. would result in 400 additional deaths and 2,500 serious injuries a year. This report was more comprehensive than the recent TRL report, which said that “only” 30 additional deaths would result. Many industry experts reject the TRL report as flawed and simplistic.

• Loss of business would see redundancies and closures in the garage trade.

• A survey of 4,200 motorists by the MOT Forum showed that 92% were in favour of maintaining annual MOT tests.

• Among those organisations that have also come out against 4.2.2. are: The AA, the RAC and Which?

MOT Frequency Campaign Hots Up...

September date confirmed for NTDA Golf DayThursday 15th September 2011 is now the confirmed date for the NTDA Golf Day at the prestigious Oxfordshire Golf and Country Club near Thame. Actual costs of the event have yet to be agreed as we are currently negotiating a sponsorship arrangement which would keep player and non-player costs to an absolute minimum. Any golfers interested in attending should contact [email protected] to reserve a place. This year we are encouraging member companies to book teams of four. The day’s golf will be followed by a presentation dinner in the evening and the event is open to members and non-members alike.

Licence to Fit to become Mandatory for Members… A plan to encourage tyre technicians to carry a licence to fit card moved a step nearer last month following a decision by the NTDA Executive Council to make it mandatory for members carrying out roadside repairs to licence fitters. The Licence to Fit programme is currently being developed by a group of members and the NTDA Directorate and will include a requirement that fitters attending truck tyre breakdowns on the roadside will be suitably trained, through a variety of qualifications, to work safely in the dangerous environment of a roadside breakdown.. The scheme is still under development and should be ready to roll out to the membership in the coming months. Council decided at their meeting last month that the scheme will become a membership requirement following a run in period, the details of which will be agreed at their next meeting in October.

Unprecedented Interest in NTDA Dinner.. Following unprecedented interest in the discounted rooms at the Birmingham Metrople for the night of the Association’s Annual Dinner and TAFF Awards, a further supply have been secured but anyone interested should contact Aylesbury as soon as possible. The Dinner, which was a sell-out in Manchester last year with over 400 attendees, looks like repeating its success in Birmingham.
