N E W S NTDA Annual Report 2015 Developing an Apprenticeship Cooperative which will see us working to develop a network of FE colleges and training providers that can offer apprenticeships to members signed up to the cooperative; Producing career guidance materials for schools and colleges and service leavers to be designed to attract both young and experienced people with transferable skills into our industry; Developing a Gold/Silver/Bronze membership standards assessment scheme for NTDA membership. Membership Growth Membership enquiries from across the UK remained extremely brisk in 2015, which was another phenomenal year of growth. Attercliffe Tyres Ltd, Autoparts UK, Barry Tyre Centre Ltd, Blackheath Tyres Ltd, DSW Motor Factors, GB Tyres Ltd, GT Tyres (Ceredigion) Ltd, Littlehampton Tyre & Exhaust Ltd, Hometyre Group Ltd, M60 Tyres Ltd, Mid Beds Tyres Ltd, North Lincs. Tyres Ltd, Rapid Rubber Yorkshire Ltd, Robbs Tyre Services Ltd, Sandbach Tyre Service Ltd and The Tyre Brigade (GB) Ltd all became full members and CLAMPCO UK Ltd, EPYX Ltd and Smithers Rapra became supplier members. Communication The Executive Officers identified that only by being innovative and exciting can the NTDA maintain its position at the cutting edge of the future and maintain the strength of our industry. That is why the Association became so active on all social media platforms and again that paid dividends in raising awareness of not only the Association, but the importance of the tyre industry as a whole. The recently launched NTDA Facebook page brought together the history of the Association, by showing, for example, images of all Past Presidents and National Chairman, but also promoted and gave coverage to major NTDA events and campaigns. Membership Activity 2015 saw great progress in the regions. The North West/ North Wales Region and Northern Ireland Region continued to organise meetings on a regular basis to which they also invited interesting guest speakers. Over the last year, in addition to the obvious benefits of networking, the members of these two regions enjoyed presentations and demonstrations across a range of topics including training, waste management, wheel alignment, TPMS, engine lubrication management, new pension regulations, part worn tyres, start/stop technologies and EU Tyre Labelling, to name but a few. There were also factory visits and lively discussions about market conditions. Both regions hosted major social events in November, which attracted more than 80 guests. In July, the new South East region hosted a very successful meeting under the Chairmanship of Prashant Chopra of Autogem Invicta Ltd. This was a great opportunity for suppliers to meet with retailers and discuss what they can do to enhance the industry. In August the Association welcomed 23 of the great and good from the truck tyre supplier sector to its new Truck Tyre Supplier Forum, which gave the NTDA a positive steer on what this group of its membership wanted the Association to deliver. It was clear that companies remained concerned about the lack of ability in the industry to attract, train and retain good people now and even more so in the future. The quality of some companies, and their employees, operating in our industry was also a major topic of concern. As a direct result of these discussions with members, the NTDA committed to: Positioning the REACT Working Safely at the Roadside licence as the de facto standard for roadside tyre technicians;

The recently launched NTDA Facebook page brought together the history of the Association, by showing, for example, images of all Past Presidents and National Chairman, but also promoted and gave coverage to major NTDA events and campaigns.

As a direct result of these discussions with members, the NTDA committed to:

Tyre safety campaigner Frances Molloy and representatives from PSV operators were also present and themeetingwas chairedby LabourMPSteve

Rotheram. The meetingwas covered in a BBC2 documentary Inside the Commons. The NTDA and TIF representativesmanaged to demonstrate during the meeting

that the issue was not just about tyre age, but tyre ageing, maintenance and origin. Post-election, this issue went very quiet in2015,mainlybecause theLabourparty,whichwascommitted to changing the legislation as recommended in theBill, did not get in to power.However, TIF has beenworking proactively on the Guide to tyre management on commercial vehicles. The guide has received support from the FTA, IRTE, RHA and the Senior Traffic Commissioner,BeverleyBell.TheNTDA,TIFandtheothersupportingtradeassociations are committed to ensuring the widespread dissemination of the guide, which was launched at the Tyre IndustryConference,onanunrestrictedbasis. It is intendedthat this industry led best practice approach will negate the need for more, probably unenforceable, legislation.

NTDA SchemesFollowing extensive discussions with the RoadsideEmergencyActionConcerningTechnicians(REACT)steeringgroup, the Licence to Fit was renamed as the Licence to Work Safely at the Roadside. At the time of writing this report,

2810 licences had been issued to technicians across the UK and it is anticipated that the3000markwill be reachedbyyear end. 202 companies participated in the scheme via 27 training providers.

Another major success for the Association was its campaign to combat illegal, unsafe and dangerous part-worn tyres. The investigations carried out in partnership with Trading Standards Officers led to multiple high-profile prosecutions acrossthe UK, suspended prison sentences and accumulated fines in excessof £50,000. Thanks to an excellentworkingrelationship with TyreSafe, news of the prosecutions had been reported extensively. As a direct result, the NTDA Executive Council elected, unanimously at its November 2015 meeting, to reintroduce the member levy as a mandatory commitment in 2016, which will assist the Association in its continuedeffortstoeradicatedangerouspart-worntyres.
