there are actually more people living here than in the neighboring Netherlands. At around 692 billion euros, they generate more than one-fifth of the total German gross domestic product. If NRW were a country in its own right, it would rank 19th inter-nationally ahead of Switzerland, Sweden, Poland and Belgium. Some 160 million people live within a radius of 500 kilometers (311 miles) around the state capital Düsseldorf. No other European metro-politan region possesses such purchasing power.

Industrial heartland of Germany
In 2017, the industrial enterprises based in NRW generated sales of around 350 billion euros – which is 18.5
percent of industrial sales in Germany. 19.7 percent of the employed population of NRW work in the industrial sector. With the Ruhr Metropolis as its core, NRW is the strongest industrial region in Europe. NRW is home to large industrial corpora-tions of world standing as well as dozens of smaller companies which are leaders in their respective business fields.
Home of the world market leaders One out of four German world market leaders comes from NRW. These champions and “hidden champions”
come from all economic sectors. And that is not surprising if you look at the corporate landscape in NRW: 19 of the 50 highest-grossing German companies are based in NRW. These include such renowned global players as Bayer, Bertelsmann, Deutsche Post, Deutsche Telekom, E.ON, Henkel and thyssenkrupp. In addition, 12 of the 40 largest retail companies are based in NRW, such as Aldi, Metro and Rewe. But above all, around 751,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) form the economic backbone of the state. This broad economic base produces top achievements. Many of the companies are world market leaders and innovators in their segments. They are magnets for international firms. Germany’s No. 1 investment locationMore than 19,000 foreign companies have already invested in NRW and con-trol their German or European activities
from here. These include global concerns such as 3M, BP, Ericsson, Ford, Huawei, QVC, UPS, Toyota and Vodafone. They make NRW the No. 1 invest-ment location in Germany, since more investment flows to NRW from abroad than to any other German federal state: NRW accounts for 27 percent of all foreign direct investments (FDI) in Germany. For-eign companies have thus become an important employer in the state, providing jobs for about one million people.
5Europe’s gateway with an excellent transport infrastructure NRW stands for mobility in all dimen-sions. This is ensured by two interna-
tional airports and four more airports with European connections with a total of more than 400 direct international flights to the cities of the world. NRW has the densest rail network in Germany with some 6,000 kilometers of tracks. More than 2,200 kilo-meters of freeways and 17,600 kilometers of federal and provincial roads ensure that almost all of the state’s locations are optimally connected to the European interstate road network. The state also has a lot to offer on the water: Around 720 kilome-ters of waterways with 120 ports, including the world’s largest inland port in Duisburg with some 133 million tonnes of freight handled annually. In almost no other region of Europe will companies find better conditions for transport and logistics.

One of Europe’s best breeding grounds for talent NRW is a state of highly qualified workers and academics. This is ensured by the 70 universities and universities of applied
sciences where some 768,000 students are learning for a successful future career. More than one in four academics in Germany are trained in NRW. This makes NRW Germany’s No. 1 breeding ground for talent. In 2016 alone, more than 107,000 students completed their education at North Rhine- Westphalian uni versities. World class in research and development Whether at the elite universities RWTH Aachen and Cologne, Forschungs-zentrum Jülich, the German Aerospace
Center, nine institutes of the Leibniz Association, 14 Fraunhofer and Max Planck Institutes as well as 56 collaborative research centers at universities – every day, many thousands of scientists and devel-opers advance the know-how in their fields a little more. This creates ideal conditions for innovation and technology transfer in the densest research network in Europe.

8 9Logistics competence of world renown In 2016, Germany was named the logistics world champion by the World Bank. In addition to transport routes
and international connections, logistics competen-cies such as tracking and tracing, timelines or cus-tomer satisfaction played a key role. NRW in par-ticular contributed to the fact that Germany won this title once again. Of the top 25 largest logistics companies in Germany, nine have their headquar-ters in NRW, including Deutsche Post DHL, Rhenus and UPS Germany. About a quarter of all logistics centers in Germany are located in NRW. And the logistics research conducted with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics in Dort-mund is also world class. The largest European logistics research cluster, which develops the logistics of tomorrow, is run from here.
NRW: Poised to become Germany’s leading digital location Every fi fth German startup now comes from NRW. This is not surprising as the
state offers an exciting market. In the economically largest federal state, the global players from trade and industry as well as the medium-sized businesses are working intensively on digital transformation. At the universities in the state there are around 80,000 students studying in the fi elds electrical engineering / information technology and com-puter science – an excellent talent pool. And top researchers in the state conduct research on all major areas of digital change: NRW offers compa-nies in the digital economy an excellent environ-ment in which to develop.
NRW: Surprisingly diverse
NRW also offers plenty of room for variety and excite-ment outside of the state’s
vibrant economic life. This is why NRW is one of the most popular travel destinations in Germany with more than 22 million guests per year. Attractions for visitors from all over the world include the event and shopping facilities in Düsseldorf, Cologne and the Ruhr Metropolis. The cultural offerings are also fi rst-rate: More than 900 museums and 130 the-aters make the state one of the most diverse cul-tural regions in Europe, on a par with Paris and London. Five buildings in NRW alone have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: Aachen Cathedral, Cologne Cathedral, Augustusburg Cas-tle in Brühl, the Corvey monastery in Ostwestfalen-Lippe and the former colliery Zeche Zollverein in Essen. It is precisely the industrial culture of the state that is unique in Europe. For activities in the outdoors, there are 14,000 kilometers of cycle paths and over 50,000 kilometers of hiking trails. And in winter, the largest ski area north of the Alps attracts hundreds of thousands of winter sports enthusiasts to the Sauerland region. The varied and diverse range of cultural and leisure activities allows visitors to discover something surprising and stimulating every day.
