WHERE YOUR HEART IS … MATTERS!
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
- Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
Last month, we talked about the first of eight systems of a healthy church. The first system was called “The Assimilation System” (‘Connections System’ here at DUMC). That system is about biblical hospitality—how to treat people who come to our church in such a way as to ‘close the back door,’ helping to grow a desire within them to return and become a regular part of the Body of Christ. True hospitality will do that!
This past month, I began to study system #2 in my coaching network—“The Stewardship System.” The reason it’s so important for us to learn this system is this: It’s impossible to become a fully-developing FOLLOWER of Jesus without becoming a fully-developing steward of our resources. So often the Church breezes over the whole topic of stewardship, but what I’ve learned so far is that if we do, we’ve missed it! We’ve missed out on a huge part of the treasure we find in being a true FOLLOWER of Jesus! Other than John 3:16, the above scripture is also worth committing to memory. Read this scripture again and think about it for a moment (Matt. 6:21, NIV): “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” As FOLLOWERS of Jesus, he is supposed to be #1 in our

lives—nothing ever competing for 1st place! But, is that always the case? I think there’re reasons Jesus said what he did. And the first among many is simply that we’re human beings who … want what we want … when we want it … and, often, what we want first is not him! Some time ago an elderly man living in New Jersey made an unusual discovery as he leafed through an old family Bible. Many years earlier, his aunt had died and left it to him. Part of her will read: "To my beloved Steven Marsh I bequeath my family Bible and all it contains, along with the residue of my estate after my funeral expenses and just and lawful debts are paid." When everything had been settled the nephew got a few hundred dollars plus the old volume mentioned in the will. … After the money was used up, his only support was a small pension, and for more than 30 years he lived in poverty. Then one day he cleaned out his attic in preparation for a move to his son's home where he hoped to spend his old age. There in a trunk was the family Bible he had inherited. Opening it, he was amazed to find bank notes scattered throughout its pages. He counted over $5000 in cash. Within his reach were riches he could have been enjoying all along…
Sometimes, it’s the same with us. We think we know what true treasures in this life are all about, only to find out just how temporal they really are. (What do they say? You’ll never see a hearse pulling a U-Haul?) It’s only in Jesus that true treasure lies, for in that relationship we find the only thing that will last forever! Again, it’s impossible to become a fully-developing FOLLOWER of Jesus without becoming a fully-developing steward of our resources… We cannot separate stewardship from discipleship. It’s a vital component of our walk with Christ—our life with God. How we handle the resources God has entrusted to us says everything about what/who is #1 in our lives! We have to make sure we know where our heart is … at all times. Is Jesus the one we’re being faithful to? See you in the House of Stewards,
Pastor Rom

"Pull Yourself Together!"
You've heard it a million times. Others may have said it to you or you may have said it to yourself. But things just aren't coming together. You're still hurting. You still feel like things are falling apart. Our Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers who will walk with you, listen to you, and provide confidential one-to-one care, as you search through the pieces and find what is truly in your heart. To learn more about Stephen Ministry for yourself or someone you know, talk to one of our Stephen Leaders: Pastor Rom, Gail Ray, or Beth Schlueter. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!
THANKS FROM ROM, JANE & FAMILY!
A very special thank-you to all who have supported us through the recent loss of Rev. R.A. Pegram. Thank you for all of the
cards, memorial gifts, and various ways that you have supported us. All memorial gifts were donated to the "R.A.
Pegram Fund for Leadership Development and Church Revitalization" through Faith United Methodist Church, Neenah,
WI. (where R.A. served the last 19 years of his full-time ministry). Again, thanks for all that you've done to be supportive
during this time. You have been a blessing, indeed! Rom & Jane

November 2012 A STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE FOR YOUR CHURCH
#283 Giving breaks the temptation of greed. “The one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind.” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7a) Roy and Mirabel Deming lived a life marked by gratitude and thanksgiving for their family and their church family. In addition to establishing two different Charitable Gift Annuities, they expressed their thanks for the opportunity to serve Christ through the Church by naming the Minister’s Pension Memorial Fund here at the Foundation as the recipient of 5% of their residual estate at the time of their death. Their children agreed to add a more to that amount and sent a donation to deposit into this special fund established to supplement the pension for Wisconsin United Methodist pastors. Their daughter, Joan Deming wrote, “My parents were always grateful for the many ways the church supported them, especially in their retirement. As a family we are very pleased to send this final gift in honor of them to further benefit all pastors.” What are you thankful for in the life and ministry of the church? What might you consider as a gift in your will to further the love of Christ through the ministry of your local church or another ministry? The Wisconsin United Methodist Foundation is ready to help everyone meet their charitable giving goals, both clergy and laity. At this time of thanksgiving, we invite you to make sure the Church is included in your will. For more information on how you might do that, please contact us at:

This is My Church
author unknown
This is my church.
It is composed of people like me.
We make it what it is.
It will be friendly if I am.
Its pews will be filled if I help fill them.
It will do great works if I work.
It will make generous gifts to many causes
if I’m a generous giver.
It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship if I bring
them.
It will be a church of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith
and a church of noble spirit …
if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these.
Therefore, with the help of God
I shall dedicate myself to the task of being
all the things I want my church to be.

A woman was asked by a co-worker,
"What is it like to be a Christian?"
She replied, "It is like being a pumpkin. God
picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then God cuts off
the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.
God removes the seeds of doubt, hate, greed,
etc., and then carves you a new smiling face and
puts the light of Christ inside of you to shine
for the entire world to see."

NOTICE TO ALL INTERESTED IN "ESSENTIAL TRANSFORMATION" NEXT FALL (2013)!
This is a note to anyone who will be a sophomore in high school and up by next fall who wish to take the Essential Transformation (E.T.) Class--especially as a prerequisite to either Confirmation or Membership at DUMC (though all, including members, are welcome to study the Christian faith with us). If interested, you need to be active in one of our weekly worship celebrations starting right now ... and throughout the year--regularly. In other words, if you are seriously interested in taking a step into Confirmation or Membership, this needs to be seen in your desire to be active in this Body of Christ and supportive of our ongoing ministries before taking the class! This will be a major consideration for anyone considering taking E.T. next fall for the above reasons. This is both an issue of care & integrity when it comes to membership at DUMC. Thank you for your understanding! Pastor Rom
