So, what is this Lent thing all about anyway? Lent is the time in
the Christian year when we remember Jesus suffering and sacrifice.
It is a difficult season. We were joyous in Christmas when we celebrat-
ed Jesus birth. We were filled with wonder in Epiphany when we
heard the magnificent stories of Jesus’ baptism, His miracles, and His
transfiguration. But now the road gets tough. The lessons are challeng-
ing.
As we recognize that Christ gave up His life for us as an atonement
for our sins, it has been a common practice during Lent to give up
something in our own lives that might keep us from Christ. The cliché
is to give up chocolate over the 40 days of Lent. (By the way, the
movie Chocolat, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, does an
entertaining job of explaining why Christians could make a more lasting
impact by giving up something more significant than chocolate during
the 40 days.) What should Christians give up during Lent? Are there
habits that keep you from drawing closer to God? Are there things
you do to excess that ought to be done in more moderation? Would a
reduction in TV or computer time, for instance, give you more time
for prayer? Or, would you be willing to turn the tables? Is there some
spiritual practice that you could take on for this short season in the
Christian year?
I’ve asked the pastoral staff, as well as Rev. Lisa Brown Cole and
Rev. Jack Snyder, to tell us what they believe Christians should give
up. Each Wednesday in Lent, beginning with Ash Wednesday on
Feb. 13th, we will hear a different speaker talk to us about things that
could make a lasting impact in our lives if we could only give up certain
traits. Some of the topics these speakers will be addressing include
giving up worry, control, hatred, blinders, and discouragement, among
others. I hope you will join us each Wednesday at 6:30 pm in the
sanctuary as we learn some new ways to have a holy Lent.
And may the Peace of Christ be with you,
Pastor Doug

THE POWER OF A FOCUSED
HEART - by Mary Lou Redding -
"Looking to simplify your life? quiet
your mind? find your unique spiritual
gift(s) and make a difference? Turn to
the Beatitudes!
Sometimes teachings from well-
known biblical passages are so
obvious and preached so often that
we overlook other helpful, not-so-
obvious lessons. The Beatitudes are
celebrated as being the template for
humble Christian living. Dig deeper
and you'll also find practical applica-
tions for living a simpler yet more
spiritually engaged life, especially in
this distraction-heavy and frenzied
world. " ......the Beatitudes are not easy
sayings we can glibly incorporate in our
way of life," writes Redding. "Like so
much of what Jesus said, they invite us
to move beyond first impressions and
surface meanings. They challenge us to
explore."
Using Jesus' teachings about the
kingdom of heaven and how that
message spurs us to critically evaluate
our priorities, Redding says we must
learn to say no to some things to say
yes to God.

MUSIC MINISTRY
Soli Deo Gloria - J.S Bach used to write at the bottom
of his many beautiful sacred works, “Soli Deo Gloria.”
That translates, “To God Alone Be the Glory.” Those of
us serving in music ministry totally agree with Bach’s
dedication. When we perform, through God’s grace,
we have a way to speak to God, or for God, through
music!! What a fantastic gift and pleasure! And if it
somehow blesses you, all the better! Sometimes, a
musical offering is followed by applause from the congregation. We receive
this as a worshipful response (“Clap your hands, all you peoples!”). When it
happens, you may see Nan and others point upward, as an affirmation to all, that
all of the glory goes to God alone! We understand your response as an “Amen!”
or “Glory!”
You are invited and welcome to join in our music ministry – no experience is
necessary; the only requirement is a heart that wants to give God all the glory!
Please contact Nan de Andrade, Music Minister, to learn more.

SUNDAY MORNING WORSHIP
SAINTS AMONG US AWARD
RECOGNIZING OUR LAITY
We have a tradition at Aldersgate of recognizing members of our laity whose
faith is demonstrated in simple ways. The guidelines used in making these
selections are : Good Samaritan – someone who helps others, who goes out
of their way, or even against the grain, to provide assistance to those in need.
Second Mile – who consistently goes ‘above and beyond’ what’s expected.
despite having such a
glowing resume in the
life of the church, the first
thing you will notice
about this woman is her
humility and gentle spirit.
In fact, she will be embar-
rassed to death to even
be recognized for this
award. Nevertheless, it
is an honor to be able to
recognize my friend and
neighbor Carol Brese as
our Good Samaritan
award winner for 2012.
By Doug Lain
Good Samaritan is given
out annually to someone
who helps others, who
often goes out of their
way or even against the
grain, to provide assis-
tance to those who need
our help.
In a world where we so
highly value leadership,
we are reminded that
Jesus calls us all not to
lead, but to follow Him.
This year’s winner of
the Good Samaritan
Award is a determined
follower of Jesus. She is
a Greeter filled with the
gift of hospitality, she is
a Stephen Minister who
shows compassion and
caring. Along with her
husband Dave, she leads
a small group called Life
Care that helps disciples
to grown in faith. She is
a prayer warrior, who
visits with the sick regu-
larly every week. In fact,
she may have won this
award simply for her con-
tribution as someone who
visits those in the church
who have a need. But she
also prays with strangers,
as evidenced by her being
out front every single
month at our Drive
Through Prayer. And

also needed if you don’t want to walk or
run, but want to be involved.
Our team was formed three years ago in
memory of Lynn Anderson. In 2011

CONDUIT
I am sure many of you know, one of our sister churches in CONDUIT, Mt.
Level Missionary Baptist, sponsors an excellent youth mentoring program, the
"Mt. Level Angels Life Skills and Basketball Program." Mr. Bryan Umstead
coordinates this program, which teaches the children life skills, Biblical principles,
manners, teamwork, etc. It is a joy to watch him and the "coaching staff" work
with these youngsters.
Aldersgate participates in this ministry by opening the Family Life Center to them
for practice and by helping provide meals. In the past, Sunday School classes,
UMM and individuals have graciously provided meals.
Would your group please consider providing a meal this year?
There are 48 children and 6 coaches for a total of 54. The 6 - 9 year olds finish
practice at 7:15 p.m. The 10 - 12 year age group finishes at 8:30 p.m. (approx.
24 in each group) A bagged meal with sandwiches, chips, cookies and a drink,
would be great ! Also, hot dogs, pizza, etc. served in the Family Life Center.
Coach Bryan prefers that they drink a boxed juice, or water.
We would sincerely appreciate any help you can offer this year to feed these
deserving "angels." The dates are provided below. Please pass this information
along to any groups you believe would be interested in helping with this ministry.
Monday – 1/28/13, Friday – 2/1/13, Monday – 2/4/13, Friday – 2/8/13, Monday –
2/15/13, Friday – 2/22/13, Monday – 3/1/13, Friday – 3/8/13, Friday – 3/15/13,
Monday – 3/18/13, Friday – 3/22/13, Monday – 4/1/13.
This mission is serving 100 kids, the majority from Oxford Manor. More coaches
are needed, as well as drivers to take the 6 teams to their Saturday games. The
drivers need to have a passenger endorsement license. If you can help in these
ways, call Coach Bryan Umstead at 919-389-2887.
Please contact Peggy S. Allen [email protected] 919-906-0566, if
you can help.
Mt. Level also asked for help with the Wednesday night Bible Study they have at
their church, again serving many children from Oxford Manor. If you feel led to
help with this ministry, call Barbara Cameron at 919-681-4188.
