1 Aldersgate has been a church that gives for a long time. It is in our DNA. We give our time, our talents, and our tithes. This is an active church, a doing church. And we ask you to support its min- istries every single week. Every week there is a request for something, even beyond the offering plate. It might be food for Urban Ministries, DVD’s for the Interfaith Hospitality Network, or money for a mission trip fund-raiser. We collect and distribute. This is who we are. Sometimes we give to the collective good, as we do with our tithes and offerings. And sometimes we give as we choose to direct the gift. For instance, each individual will decide whether or not to support a particular fund-raiser that the church is sponsoring. I don’t know why you give. And I don’t know what you give. That’s all between you and God. But I’m glad you give because I believe in the work of the church and the causes we support. I also recognize the fruit of our labor. But, here’s the thing. If I saw less fruit (and who am I to judge, anyway?) or if I had a quarrel over the church budget (and sometimes I do) I would still give the same. KNOWING (Know more about God, each other, and the needs of our world.)

A big thank-you goes to Julie and Carli Reo for redesigning the Kids Own Worship banner (with a little help from the kids this summer) ! It looks beautiful and the children can see where they are going as they lead the line out of the sanctuary! Our third graders will receive their Bibles during the 11:00am service on October 21st. It is a tradition in most United Methodist Churches that children get their own Bible with their name engraved on the front so that they may really begin to study God's Word themselves. They will spend time in their Sunday school class learning to use the study helps that are in the edition they are receiving. Come help us celebrate this important day in their journey of faith. - Jane

The Interfaith Hospitality Network - October 7-14th at Aldersgate The Interfaith Hospitality Network gives shelter and support to homeless families. As a host church, Aldersgate provides warm meals, safe sleeping quarters and a welcoming heart to IHN families once every three months. The week of October 7-14th is our next week to host. If you would like to help in some way: provide transportation between the Day House and the church, help with an evening meal, or stay overnight as a host, please contact Susan or Curtis Gay at 919-471-2352.

Angels Basketball Needs a Coach Coach Bryan Umstead, head coach of the Angels Basket-ball Teams from Mt. Level Baptist Church, is moving to Charlotte with his company. It is hoped that the out-standing basketball program that he has started will continue with the assistant coaches leading. All of the CONDUIT churches are asked to help out in any way we can. We can certainly continue our effort to provide suppers occasionally for the teams that practice at the Aldersgate FLC on Mondays and Fridays. If any of you could help with the coaching, Mt. Level would be grateful. All of the kids who participated last year want to continue this year. As you can imagine, there are more on the waiting list. As a church, there is no ministry that would be more meaningful to the kids involved and to our community. This contributes to their mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Get out your candy and your coins!! Our annual fall mission project kicks off October 7.

The Aldersgate children will be raising money for Trick or Treat for UNICEF throughout the month of October. Please support the children by bringing your extra coins and cash to drop into their UNICEF boxes and cans. Donations bring clean water, medicine, and school supplies to needy children worldwide.

Durham IHN Annual Gala: Saturday, November 3rd at the Millennium Hotel starting at 6:00 PM Save the date! Enjoy a night out on the town, includ-ing dinner, dancing and both silent and live auctions to support Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network (Durham IHN). Durham IHN is one of our city's emergency homeless shelters serving families in cri-sis. Get your gala tickets by visiting www.dihn.org or by emailing [email protected]. NEED A PRAY-ER SHAWL? The Prayer Shawl Min-istry would like to make prayer shawls more readily available to everyone. Beginning Sunday, October 7th there will be a box of prayer shawls available for any-one who would like or needs one. It could be for your-self or someone else. Simply fill out the book that will be inside the box and include the name of the person you are giving the shawl to and the date. The giving and receiving of a prayer shawl is one of those sacred and holy moments between two people and should be treated as such. If you are bringing a prayer shawl to someone, please take the time to wrap it gently around their shoulders and pray with them. You are essentially wrapping them in the prayers that have been knitted or crocheted into the shawl for them. They will always remember your act of kindness and the time you took with them longer than your actual words. Inside each prayer shawl bag you will find a card with several prayer suggestions, if needed. You don’t have to knit or crochet to be part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry because EVERYONE is part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry. For more information you may contact Barbara Atkinson at 919 765-9784 or [email protected]

FAMILY FALL FESTIVAL ! FAMILY FALL FESTIVAL ! FAMILY FALL FESTIVAL ! FAMILY FALL FESTIVAL !

It’s time for our Fall Festival! Family Ministries is planning a BIG event this year for everyone—all ages ! On Wednesday, October 31, 5:00pm to 8:00pm, Family Life Center and the new parking lot (our regular Wednesday Night Live activities will be suspended) our gym will be transformed into a wonderful family Fall Festival house. A yummy chili and hot dog dinner, games, a bounce house, a cupcake walk, and of course Trunk ‘r Treat will all be here for you and your children to enjoy! We invite each family to take part in the festival by jazzing up your car trunk/ /truck bed! Use your imagination, maybe some help from Pinterest, and make a beautiful/scary/harvest-y trunk and share treats there. If trunk decorating is not your thing, we also need cupcake donations for the Cupcake Walk, prizes for the games, and extra candy to help out those who are at their Trunks! You can sign up to bring cupcakes by emailing Associate Pastor Tara ([email protected]) or sign the list on her office door across from the Wesley Room. A candy collection bin will be located across from the main office door or you can drop it off in Tara’s office any time before Oct. 31st ! If you’d like to make this night part of your service com-mitment to the church, please contact Tara or Sheilah Lowans ([email protected]). This drop-in event is for your family and the entire community! Please bring a family and friends before or after traditional trick–or-treating. We will have signs out to invite the community, but the BEST invitation comes from you!! Tell your neighbors it’s gonna be a great night and you want to share it with them!

Cars That Change Lives Hundreds of families in our community are facing hard times. Some are getting support from great ministries like Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network, Urban Ministries, Genesis Home, Housing for New Hope, the Red Cross and others. But without reliable transportation, they will struggle to find work, stay employed, go to school and care for their children. That’s where Wheels4Hope steps in. By referral through our partner agencies in Durham,

Wheels4Hope provides affordable, reliable transportation to these families. Wheels4Hope takes donated cars, repairs them using volunteers and places them back into our community to change lives. Your used car (in any condition) will help change lives. And, using your car in this way creates the best tax advantage for the donor – far greater than programs that simply auction cars for cash. Donate your car or volunteer by calling 919-832-1941 or go to www.wheels4hope.org

2nd Annual Bull City Stand Down Friday, September 14th was the 2nd Annual Bull City Stand Down event for veterans. All the local services available to veterans were in one place for one day. The official numbers aren’t in yet, but the estimate is that around 5,000 people attended this event. Flu shots, haircuts, showers, housing, employment, legal aid, benefit specialists, clean underwear-more services than can be listed here - were offered and received. Aldersgate UMC proved to be a valuable part of all this.

I had the honor of delivering the invocation. The Aldersgate prayer station stayed busy all day long. Other members volunteered to man the showers. The Methodist men donated generously. But what proved to be our greatest service was our bus! All these services covered a very large area. The event occupied the Durham County Memorial Stadium, the National Guard Armory, and everything in between. Stadium Drive was closed off for the day and a stage for entertainment was set up in the middle of the street. How did people get from one end to the other? Courtesy of David Anderson and the Aldersgate UMC bus. I am proud to tell people that I am a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church! - Curtis Gay

Light The Night I invite you to join the Aldersgate Journey Group, “Way Seekers’ as they participate in the “Light the Night Walk.” This is a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and is similar to the Crop Walk in that you ask people to sponsor you in the walk. The walk is only two miles long and if you are unable to walk 2 miles, you can do a

“virtual” walk. Those who raise $250.00 will receive a $25.00 Lands End e-store card. The more money you raise, the higher the gift card value. The walk is Saturday, November 3rd with festivities starting at 4:30pm at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham. LLS deals with all blood cancers. Three people affiliated with Aldersgate have died from blood cancers, Melodye Aiken, Camille Yorkey and Jordan Walker. A gold balloon may be carried in memory of one of these persons. Three others with connections to Aldersgate that are on this journey are; Dale Reynolds, brother of Glenn Reynolds, Jay, nephew of Regina

Whitaker and Judy Schlegel. Survivors carry a white balloon in the walk. I have personally benefitted from LLS in four ways. I have received financial assistance, life-saving drugs which were developed with grants from LLS, and education and support groups. If you wish to walk or if you will sponsor a walker, contact: Judy Schlegel at (919) 383-4896 or [email protected]

SERVICE … WITH A SMILE There’s not a better way to “serve the Lord with gladness,” than through music ministry! There are opportunities for all ages to serve and get stronger (in the joy of the Lord)! If you want to talk or explore further about any of our music ministry groups, please contact Nan at [email protected] . Here’s some details: SINGERS CHANCEL CHOIR REHEARSALS - 7:30pm -9:00pm (Sanctuary); child care is available (please let Nan know if you

need it). This group sings weekly at the 8:15am and 11:00am services, and is beginning to work on their special Christ-mas music! Though the choir rehearses together, most weeks folk choose to sing at one or the other of our traditional ser-vice times. Join us, even just for the ho-ho-holidays! PRAISE BAND – rehearsals are Tuesdays from 6:15pm-7:30pm (sanctuary). We would love to add more talent to our team! Regular team members, or substitutes (esp. drums/bass) are welcome to join us. CHILDREN’S CHOIRS – Wednesdays from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. What other non-school weekly enrichment do you do for your children that is absolutely FREE? Add to that, mom/dad get to engage in their own learning and fellowship opportunities at the same time! Here’s the deal: WNL for Kids! Graded groups for Preschool, K-2nd and 3rd-5th graders are enjoying music and learning activities around the fruit of the Spirit. We hope ALL children will come to our WNL for Kids – it’s a great way to nurture and reinforce the learning and spiritual growth, and it’s a joyful midweek blessing. YOUTH – Sundays at UTH. Our youth know that music is a great way to connect with and love God, and they sing a almost every week at UTH worship time. So, they’ve decided to let their singing be contagious, and will be bringing their favorite praise and worship songs into our morning worship every month or so. Look forward to hearing our UTH Praise Team and Singers in worship soon! See Rob Tucker ([email protected]) if you want to get more involved in this ministry. Youth are also encouraged and welcome to be a part of Chancel Choir, Praise Team, or Handbell groups. HANDBELLS JOYFUL NOISE RINGERS Tuesdays, 7:30-9:00 pm NEW! PRAISE RINGERS – NEW/ BEGINNING Handbells group for youth and adults. Please think about this opportunity – our church needs this group to stay strong in our handbell ministry!! We can begin as soon as there are seven of us interested in ringing! Basic music reading skills are needed, but can be taught in a couple of sessions with Nan. Rehearsal will be on Mondays 6:00pm - 6:50 pm (over in time for meetings). CHILDREN’S HANDBELLS Jingle Bells (for beginners) class has begun, Sundays from 6:10pm – 6:45pm. It’s a small group, new members will still be welcome to join. YOUNG RINGERS (intermediates) is rehearsing Sept. 9th - Nov. 4 from 5:15pm-6:00pm. Currently there is an opening for one ringer. Also… DULCIMER Sweet Sounds – a small group is learning to play the hammered dulcimer, and if you’re interested, we’d love to have you join us. To find out more, call Nan or you’re welcome to drop in on one of our sessions – we practice together on 1st and 3rd Thursdays at 11:00am in Nan’s office.

SACRED DANCE MINISTRY We all owe a great, big thanks to Ms. Kathy Reeves for lovingly leading and inspiring our Sacred

Dance program for the past years. Her leadership has helped all of us to worship God through the beautiful medium of dance for many years. Even more precious, her love and care of “her girls” has been a great Christian influence. A busy Eno Valley Elementary teacher and mom, who still teaches dance as well, we can only bless her, as we accept that she feels the need to “take a bow” (gracefully, of course) and a break from this great commitment of her time. Love you more, Ms. Kathy! As we continue to build on this wonderful ministry, we are in need of some support. Miss Anna Van Deventer has taken leadership of our Young Dancers. She needs adults willing to assist her as she leads rehearsals on Sundays at 4:00pm. The youth Sacred Dancers group, full of talent for dance and leadership, are still seeking adult(s) who can mentor and help with their ministry. If you have dance experience and love to “dance before the Lord,” God may be calling you to step forward and offer your experience to help in one or both of these precious groups. Please see Tara Lain, Nan de Andrade, or Anna Van Deventer for more infor-mation. Coming November 18th - Ted Yoder - Be sure to save the date!

A National Hammered Dulcimer Champion is coming to Aldersgate! Ted Yoder plays the hammered dulcimer like he has at least 3 sets of hands, and sings too! In addition to many performance venues including the Gaither Fall Festival, the Indiana State Fair, and church-es, he has recorded four CD projects, including his recent “Chocolate Skies.” Since he is coming to the de Andrade home to present a House Concert* on Sunday evening, Nov. 18th, Ted has been invited to share his music with Aldersgate at morning worship. You can read more about him and listen to some samples of his music at www.tedyoder.com. PS *If you’re wondering, “What’s a house concert?” it’s an informal concert event, hosted in a private home for a small group (around 15-30) for a small admission price (this time, $5 per person). The artist is “up close” and shares his music and stories for a wonderful, intimate concert. See Nan now to get on the invite list!

GROWING (Grow as disciples of Jesus Christ, and as a faithf ul community called the church.)

Is your meeting or event scheduled on the Church Calendar ?

Did you know that the facilities (rooms) within the Aldersgate campus have been occupied 6,000 times from January 1, 2012 to July 31, 2012! Yes, 6,000 times folks have been in and out of these two building in the past 7 months. This includes meet-ings, Sunday worship, Scouts, ALL calendar activities. Wow! To help us keep an accurate count so we can properly accommodate everyone, please make sure your activity or meeting is listed on the church calendar. To do so, call the church office (919) 477-0509 or email [email protected].

If your group is the last one to leave one of the buildings (not during regular office hours), please make sure all doors are locked and (at night) the lights are turned off. Aldersgate is busy and growing. We need to ensure a safe and secure environment for all of our members, visitors and community.
