Happy Fall! Happy Thanksgiving! Happy Halloween!

Wow! It is hard to believe that we are already a month into the school year. We have had a great start to our school year. The time has definitely flown by.

We would like to thank everyone who came out to our “Meet the Staff” event. It was truly an amazing turn out! We absolutely appreciated seeing all the family members and students enjoying themselves. There were a lot of conversations and mingling that occurred. A huge thank you goes out to our staff who worked so hard in the planning, coordination and preparation of this event.

September 25th we celebrated National Tree Day and received 31 trees

to put up in the community! Each classroom received a tree to take care of and help protect. All students committed to being responsible “tree protectors” and to take care of the community. A huge thank you goes out to Alexa Rosentreter and the ESD school committee for making this event such a success!

Another piece of exciting news was that we received 140 backpacks filled

with goodies donated from the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering. We are honoured to have been chosen to receive this donation and would like to say thank you for their generosity!

Teachers have worked hard through September to set up Classroom

Treaties in each classroom and throughout the school. Respect for everyone’s rights and responsibility to be safe and to learn, is our main focus in this area.

With school well under way, students and teachers are working on the

learning goals identified by the E.A.P. (Elementary Assessment Program formally CAP), the Learning Pathways in math and other tools to determine each child’s strengths and areas of growth. Great student attendance remains an important goal at our school. We require students to be at school every day to benefit from a rich learning environment and Optimal Learning.

A reminder to parents, Picture Day will be on Wednesday, October 23th.

More information will be sent out as the date draws near.

The system allows parents/caregivers to input student absences without calling the school.

However, to do so, the school must have a valid email address for the primary student contact (and the consent to email).

It’s this email address that allows parents/caregivers to log into the system and report student absences. Without a working email, absences cannot be reported and attendance calls will be

made.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thank-you for coming to our Meet the Staff night. It was wonderful getting to know all of you. We are learning all about spiders in room 22! The children are having fun using the Chromebooks to answer their research questions. We are sure your child enjoyed going on our first community outing to Dollarama

where we purchased spider items and other classroom supplies! Now that our beginning of the year assessment has concluded, we will be focusing on our reading, writing and math programs. We have an exciting month coming up.

Important Dates:

October 25 – No School (Staff professional development day)

The students of Room 1 have been settling into our Grade 2/3 classroom. The students helped to create our classroom treaty, "We RESPECT ourselves. We RESPECT our teachers. We RESPECT our classmates. Room 2 is having so much fun learning in Grade 1. Our class will be starting home reading this month. Every night your child will bring home a book to read and return it the next day with their log book.

Welcome new and returning families to Nursery/Kindergarten, We value and understand the importance of you as your child’s first teacher and are looking forward to sharing this role with you as your child begins school for the first time. Several times throughout the school year, you and your child will be invited to an event held in our Family Room called Stay and Play. This is an opportunity to spend time with your child for a session of fun and engaging activities including theme relat-ed crafts, literacy/numeracy games, songs and stories, and hear guest speakers share important infor-mation about your child’s growth and development during this very special time. Our first Stay and Play event is October 11, 2019. Save the date and watch for invitations to be sent home. Hope to see you there! *Reminders* Thank you to those families who have paid their

child’s $20 school supply fee. If you have not paid yet, please do so as soon as possible.

Please check your child’s backpacks and lockers daily for important notes being sent home.

For the month of October, students in Grades 1-3 will begin work on transport skills. Transport skills are those skills that move the body from one place to another or project the body upward. Transport skills involve large muscle movements. We will begin this month with running, jumping and hopping. Students in Grades 4-8 will work on orienteering. Orienteering is a fun way to exercise while learning new skills. We will use maps to locate different landmarks and stations, while being active in the outdoors. Orienteering was developed in Sweden as an offshoot of track and field. when Major Ernst Killander decided to use the natural environment to encourage active participation in running. His map and compass races were so successful that he was encouraged to extend the ideas further and develop a sport.

Congratulations! On Friday, September 27th, our students, staff and parents took to the field for our annual Terry Fox Run. A donation from our

school will be given to the Terry Fox Foundation to support cancer research. Thank you to

Brenda Krueger. Brenda is a retired teacher and a Terry’s Team Member (Cancer Survivor). She presented our school with a Terry Fox 20 Year Banner at an assembly held on September 30th.

Congratulations to the David Livingstone students!

They raised $45.75 for the Terry Fox Foundation of Manitoba!

Should They Be At School? If you are aware of children in your community who are not attending, please let us know. Contact us if: You have seen a child in the community during school hours, without his/her parents, on more than one occasion. (A

student may be away from school due to an inservice day). You may submit this fillable form or phone: (204) 789-0400 or e-mail: [email protected] Information we’ll need from you: The child’s name and address (if known). _______________________________________________________________________________ (Does the child live within the Winnipeg School Division Boundaries?) Dates, times and location where you have seen the child. _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________ What we’ll do after you call: If the child lives within the Winnipeg School Division boundaries, we’ll check to see if he or she is registered, or should be regis-tered at one of our Schools. If registered, we’ll follow up with the local school and we may ask attendance officers to help as needed. If not registered, we’ll try to find out why.

Your call or e-mail is confidential. Thank you for helping us to ensure all kids are in school.

Did You Know? Missing 10 percent of the school year (or just 2-3 days every month) can mean that by grade three, a student has failed

to mater basic reading skills, and by grade nine, he/she is at risk for dropping out of school. Everyday, starting in Nurse-ry and Kindergarten, students are learning and practicing basic literacy skills in order to be competent readers, spellers, and writers as adults.

Attending school regularly helps a child feel connected to classmates and staff. Regular school attendance every year, starting in Nursery and Kindergarten, will help your child to do well later in high

school, university or community college, and at work. How You Can Help No matter their age, set a regular bedtime and morning routine for your child. Lay out clothes and backpacks the night before. If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to their teacher about this concern. Together,

you both can make a plan to help your child When possible, avoid medical appointments or trips with your child when school is in session. Take advantage of non-

instructional days, or days during the winter break or sprint break to schedule appointments or trips.

School success goes hand in hand with good attendance!

Good Night… Good Learning!

Why is Sleep Important for Learners? Most children 5 to 12 years of age need ten to twelve hours of sleep each

night.

Learning that happens during the day is sorted and stored in your child’s memory while they get a good night’s sleep.

A well rested and alert brain is a brain that is ready to think, do and remem-ber!

The Canadian Pediatric Society Offers These Suggestions… Have a relaxing bedtime routine.

Always fall asleep in bed, not in front of the TV.

At bedtime, a room should be cool, dark & quiet.

Try to go to bed at the same time every night.

Avoid stimulants in the evening, such as drinks with caffeine (pop, energy drinks, etc.).

Avoid TV before bedtime

Don’t allow your child to have a TV, computer, video games or a cell phones in their bedroom.

School vandalism often involves graffiti, broken windows, damage to roofs and playground equipment.

To report suspicious activity on school grounds between 10:00PM and 7:00AM or to report an act of school vandal-ism in Winnipeg, call:

204-231-4556 Our security firm will attend after receiving your call.
