January Acts of Recognition

Acts of Recognition (AoRs) Acts of Recognition are given to students for achieving personal, academic, or social goals. We use the Seven Teachings to help students name their goals. This may be when a student goes beyond regular expectations or continually demonstrates skills and/or behaviours that contribute to making Mulvey School S.A.F.E.

The following 192 students received Acts of Recognition stickers in the month of January. We would like to celebrate this record number of Acts of Recognition for Mulvey School! Thank you to all who submitted; staff, students and families. We are happy to accept Acts of Recognition for students who are on remote learning. If you would like to nominate your child, or any student parent, community member, please email Mr. Correia ([email protected]) or Ms. Clements ([email protected]).

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Kindergarten - Ms. N. Schneider

The students will also be learning about the Sacred Teaching of Love. We will integrate visual arts to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

The students have been just introduced to the new theme “Community Helpers” in Room 1 this term. As the students “travel” through the community, they will take part in a variety of exciting hands-on activities including the following: sorting tools used by community helpers, putting letters for postal delivery in numerical order, ordering shoe size at the shoe store, discussing the mass and capacity of various items at the bulk food store, designing patterned jewellery shop, creating different pizza combinations at the Mulvey Pizza Parlour, creating different sundae combinations at the ice cream shop, using weekly poems to identify community helpers, to read basic sight words, to identify rhyming words, to recognize and discuss the function of question marks and exclamation marks, and to identify descriptive words. Our centres continue to be filled with hands-on, active learning opportunities. At the writing centre, students will write about what they want to be when they grow up. They will create restaurant menus at the arts and crafts centre, which they can use at the dramatic centre restaurant the students have voted and carefully named as Mulvey Pizza Parlour.

I wish to thank all of my students and the parents and guardians for your continued support throughout our Kindergarten journey.

Nursery - Mrs. S. Gomes

The children have adjusted quickly to being back in the classroom after the break. They are right back into their routines and activities. I am so proud of the children in Room 2 when it comes to mask wearing and respecting our social distancing rules and remaining 6’ apart in the classroom. They are doing so well and have a wonderful understanding and respect for one another when it comes to these restrictions in the classroom. We continue to learn a new letter each week. The children are learning how to identify each letter, print each letter and what sound each letter makes. We are using a variety of ways to learn our

letters, some of these include videos, paper and pencil activities, chalk boards, white boards, magnetic letters, playdoh and sand trays. We also continue to work on printing our names and strengthening our fine motor skills by participating in a variety of hands on activities as well as by using pencils and scissors on a regular basis in the classroom. This month we have been spending some time talking about patterns and working with some hands on materials, as well as paper practice to create patterns. As Valentine’s Day approaches we have began talking about love for our families, the world around us and our friends. We are also practicing our heart drawing skills. We will be working on creating some beautiful Heart Art to put up in our hallway. I will make sure to send out some photos of their art on Seesaw once we have that put up on our bulletin board.

Kindergarten - Mrs. H. Dumond

In January we picked up our learning right where we left off before the break. We continued to review our letters, as well as learn some new ones too – Pp, Cc, Nn, and Gg. In math we have been learning new counting strategies, representing numbers on ten frames, and matching sets of numbers to their numeral. We have been busy preparing for our assembly presentation coming up on Diversity. You will see some of our self portraits and artwork featured in our presentation that will highlight the similarities and differences among us.

In January we also did some learning about volcanos – a topic of Interest that arose during play time. Students were very curious with lots of great questions that we did some investigating about. A highlight was experimenting with baking soda and vinegar to replicate an erupting volcano! I would like to thank all of my wonderful students and families for a fantastic school year so far! It is a pleasure being a part of your learning journey. I will be away on maternity leave for the remainder of the school year, and I wish you all the best!

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Grades 1 & 2 - Mrs. L. Klassen

In January we made mini balance scales and saw how when there is the same weight on each side the scale balances. We talked about this being equal. Both sides are equal! If one side of the scale goes down then they are not equal. We transferred this knowledge to numbers on either side of the = sign.

Students have been writing about animals and making their own books about some of them.

In February we will all about the hearts and the love! We will look at the heart as part of our body and also how we think of it poetically as a place where we have feelings.

Grades 2 & 3 - Mr. J. Truss

In Language Arts we will be continuing with our “Read to Me” lessons. We are focussing on writing through a variety of activities that will develop more confident writers. Our levelled reading groups still focus on strengthening reading comprehension. In Math we are finishing off learning about telling time on digital and analog clocks. Science will have us completing a unit looking at states of matter prior to begin a unit that focusses on position and motion. In Social Studies we are working on our study of Canada by focussing on the provinces and territories. We will also incorporate mapping activities that will further contribute

to the understanding of our country.

February is “I Love to Read “month. We look forward to a number of fun activities that celebrate the importance of reading. Stay safe, and

please contact me if you have any questions.

Grades 1 & 2 - Ms. E. Paragas

For Language Arts, we will continue to work on small group instructions using the Read to Me Framework. Students will also continue to wek in recognizing blends and digraphs, sorting word families using decoding skills, reading power words/poems, and leveled books. We will continue to spell and write 7-9 letter words using Rime Magic strategies. We will also practice reading comprehension strategies like summarizing - to retell important information in their own words; visualizing - pictures created or imagined from the reading; and identifying the main idea of the story - it tells the reader what the text or paragraph is about.

Students will continue to improve their writing skills by writing: Small Moment Stories, PAX Tootle Notes, Journals on Random Act of Kindness, You Be The Author, and Descriptive Writing.

In Math, we learned about the commutative property of addition, zero property of addition, recording equalities using = symbol. We will continue to learn about pictograph, telling by hour, and comparing and sequencing numbers.

Students showed confidence in recognizing the place value of a number and able to add 3 digit numbers (without regrouping) using our math calculation template.

For Social Studies, we will discuss about our community helpers and identify their duties and responsibilities played in the community. We will integrate visual arts to build a craft to show or illustrate a wonderful community. For Science, we will continue to learn about Winter Animals and we will focus on Bears. Bear represents the teachings of Courage. We will read more books and watch some documentary videos about bears in order for us to get many facts and information about bears. We will also talk about the Sacred Teaching of Love, as part of our Valentine’s Day Theme.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

Grades 3 & 4 - Mrs. A. Luka

January was a great start to 2021! The students were hard at work, continuing to create wonderful writing and beginning to learn about habitats and communities. In math, we are beginning to study multiplication and continuing to practice our mental math strategies. We are expanding our geography knowledge to not just include Canada but now the world! Throughout this unit, we will look at the compass rose, cardinal and ordinal directions as well as legends and keys to help us interpret different types of maps and the globe!

We would like to remind you that this month is I Love to Read month and we will be participating in many fun and exciting reading activities! Remember to try and read 20 minutes each evening as it is great practice.

Grades 3 & 4 - Ms. W. MacKenzie

I hope you are all getting out to enjoy the beautiful winter weather we have been having!

In social studies, we have been learning about mapping. Students have also been exploring the features of a habitat in science. We are working toward researching an animal of their choice.

In math, the students are learning about time as well as continuing to fill their toolbox with more math strategies. Please continue to support your child in their learning at home by encouraging them to read each evening. Have them read aloud to you to develop the skill of fluency.

Also, practicing math facts is a great way to increase their ability to solve math facts quickly and accurately.

Here are a few sites that are good options: https://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_Ducky_Race_Subtraction.html http://www.hoodamath.com/games/duckyracesubtraction.html https://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards

Grades 2 & 3 Ms. K. Rosenberg

I hope everyone has been able to enjoy the wonderful Winnipeg winter weather that January brought us! Last month was a busy learning month, setting goals and learning two new types of poetry; we sure had fun writing our Haiku and Cinquain poems!

Throughout the month of February, students will be participating in a variety of reading and writing activities, as it is I Love to Read Month! A big focus for this month will be to express voice within our writing through an informational style of writing, and we will also be continuing with our reader’s theatre. Within Math, we are learning how to tell time and will continue to learn addition and subtraction strategies through problem solving and having math conversations. Later in the month, we will begin to look at a variety of graphs. In Science, we recently started to explore position and motion, and will be continuing to learn mapping skills and about Canada in Social Studies. Please continue to read every night for 15-20 minutes. We are excited and looking forward to sharing our love for literacy throughout the month of February!

Grades 4 & 5 Mr. B. Papineau

Hi everybody, so that was January, wow! Busy month: we piled on the math learning, filmed and presented our problem-solving assembly presentation, began research

projects on our Wild Canadian Animals, and continued literacy learning in many forms. Our attendance in Room 19 was spectacular with many students returning to school, you’d almost think things were back to normal!

In February we will start learning about Family Life. This mandatory curriculum subject will help kids learn about family structures and changes, puberty, and human reproduction. It can be an uncomfortable topic at first but in the past the students of Room 19 have taken this challenge seriously. If parents have any questions or concerns, they can contact Mr Papineau at the school.

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM Grades 5 & 6 - Ms. C. Fraser

Happy February to all Mulvey Family and Friends. This is normally the time of year that we are approaching our very exciting Winter Camp excursion. Sadly, this year we will not be attending Camp Cedarwood due to COVID 19. I know that we (teachers) are just as

disappointed as our students. This is often a highlight of the school year for our staff and students. We will keep a positive attitude and look forward to warmer weather for this school year and hopefully nothing will disrupt our camping trip next school

year. The outdoor activities that we normally participate in at camp, help us solidify our learning about the human body in science. Due to us not going to camp, I recommend all Room 16 families to go outside and do some winter activities. Afterwards, you can discuss what areas of the body you think that particular activity may have used (muscles, heart, lungs, nervous system, etc). It can directly tie our learning about the muscular, skeletal, and cardiovascular

system with practical application and have some outdoor fun with your family at the same time. We will also be journeying through time on our history project. We will be research-ing various diseases throughout history, from the black plague to

Covid 19, and how these particular diseases impacted the times they were prevalent in, as well as how they have shaped what we know our world to be today. Wishing Everyone a Happy and Healthy February and stay warm out there!!

Grade 1, 2, & 3 ASD - Ms. L. Costello

Room 6 students have come back from break rested and ready to learn!! It is so great to have everyone back now that busses are up and fully running. The students are continuing to learn at their individual level. Everyone has been working hard making special Valentine’s Day cards for the Seniors in our Community Seniors homes. They have also been working toward being a good friend, sharing, and including others in their playtime.

Grades 4 & 5 - Ms. C. Vande Graaf

We are off to a great start in 2021! We began the New Year talking about our goals and what we want to accomplish this year. We talked about a goal we had at school, at home and in our friend relationships. In English we are working on our writing. We are practicing using

voice when writing so that our work becomes really interesting for the reader. In math we are multiplying!! We are learning to use arrays to show our thinking and practicing our multiplication facts. Playing dice games at home where you roll two dice and have to multiply the numbers together is a great way to practice our facts. In Science we are going to begin learning about the Human body and all the body systems. We have tons of questions about how our bodies work and are excited to begin this inquiry. We had a fantastic virtual experience with the zoo last month and since then we have been talking about the Arctic. We have been learning about the animals that live in the north and are especially fascinated with polar bears. Ask your child to tell you the story about Storm the bear and how he ended up in our zoo!

Grades 5 & 6 - Mr. B. Kussin

This month we will continue our look into the solar system which will conclude with posters highlighting what each group has learned . Canadian history will continue to be our focus in social studies leading as we continue to learn about cultures in early Canada which will eventually lead us onto the topics of understanding stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination through our study of confederation and work our way toward World War II. In Math, we are continuing to build on understanding of area and perimeter using our understanding of multiplication and arrays to problem solve and in Language Arts, we will continue to improve our expository writing skills by writing on topics in our other subject areas.

Also, don’t forget that this month is I Love to Read Month even during this unusual time in our lives. Children become better writers and more literate the more they read so please impress upon your child that reading is one of the key indicators of success! Continue to be well and keep safe!

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM LAC - Mr. D. Vicente

In February we like to celebrate reading and literacy and have some fun while we are at it. We have invited a few special guest readers to read to our class virtually this year and we hope to incorporate a variety of activities to our daily class reading time. We will also use all the reading and literacy activities this month to collect more evidence of our classroom learning. The weather lately has been a bit cold but we have enjoyed a fairly warm winter so far. Groundhogs Day is February 2nd and we hope that Manitoba Merv doesn’t see his shadow, so we can continue to enjoy above normal temperatures.

Coach Program - Ms. P . Solmundson

In January we enjoyed lots of beautiful weather and did some outside learning. We did a walk along the Spirit Trail to see the woodcarvings and some students tried out cross country skiing at Bird’s Hill Park. The highlight of skiing was getting to feed the chickadees from our hands! We learned about the northern lights and completed some beautiful art work using chalk pastels.

In February we’re working on a paper folding project in art with Miss Brenna. Some students are attending See Spot Read at the Humane Society where they get to practice their reading to a dog. We’ll be learning more about our feelings and ways to handle different emotions. We hope we get some more beautiful weather to try some more

winter activities.

Coach Program - Mr. M. Jefkins

Well February is here and we are looking forward to working our way through “I Love to Read” month. We have recently enjoyed completing some interesting science studies on snowflakes, northern lights, and our senses, The students look forward to their weekly visits to “See Spot Read”, at the Winnipeg Humane Society, where they get the chance to read to dogs. What could be more fun!

We have had to be creative to find some activities. We had a nice outing to walk some trails and see some tree carvings. Sometimes we might just randomly build our own fort out of school materials. Getting outdoors daily has really helped to keep us feeling healthy and energized.

Ms. Brenna introduced some of our students to the pottery wheel. It can be challenging to make a bowl on the wheel but is very satisfying. The students did a great job. Another art project that was a real hit was Mrs. S’s Northern Lights Landscapes. These pieces look great on our display wall. We finished reading Holes and watched the movie. Both the book and the movie are well done and are fairly accurate to each other.

Take care till next month.

Happy New Year and welcome back to Ms. Brenna’s Artists Alley! It feels like we are already back into the

full swing of things here in the art room! The grades 1& 2 classes are showcased this month in the Artists Alley. They are joining the grades 2&3 classes in starting an origami unit that ties into their hopes for 2021! I’m so

proud of their patience and care as they learn to master this difficult and beautiful cultural art form. Hopefully their gorgeous origami art pieces will be on display soon! Meanwhile the grades 3&4 students and the

grades 4&5 students are finishing up their music unit! They are practicing the beautiful instrument of hand

chimes which takes both focus and cooperation. Their delightful

musical performances should be presented to you on Seesaw shortly! Last but not least the grades 5&6’s are

finishing their gorgeous contour line art. I know they were a long time coming but the results are well worth all the time and effort they put into them. They look

absolutely stunning! Congratulations!

It has been a full and exciting first month back and I am so happy to see everyone jumping in with such

enthusiasm as we move into exploring new art forms in a new year! Keep up the good work everyone!

I’m so proud of you all!

MULVEY SPORTS

In January, students mainly have been working on striking skills as applied to racket sports, hockey and baseball (T-Ball). Students have also been participating in various fun physical activities for

fitness that contribute to skill/fitness development. In the month of February, the emphasis is on exploring and

skill acquisition of the basic manipulation skills (i.e., catching, underhand/overhand throwing, and rolling)

with application of simple activities that are easy for children to understand. In addition to our regular Phys-Ed classes, students will be given opportunities to develop

movement skills and fitness in our Before School Cohort Sports Program.

Before School Cohort Sports Schedule for February (8:30-8:55 am)

- Mondays (February 1, 22: Rm’s 5 & 7) - Wednesdays (February 3, 10, 17, 24: Rm’s 21 & 23)

- Fridays (February 5, 12, 19, 26: Rm’s 17 & 20) Mr. A. Physical Education Teacher (Mornings)

In physical education class the students have recently completed the badminton unit. The next unit we are starting

in February is floor hockey. The students will be learning how to stick handle, pass, shoot and will learn the basic rules

involved in a hockey game. During our floor hockey unit safety is the student’s number one concern. Students are taught how

to safely handle the hockey stick and instructed to keep the hockey stick below their waste at all times. Keeping the stick

low reduces chance of injury while playing in a game. Students also wear protective eye wear during any

and all hockey skill or game activities. On Wednesdays the students have been enjoying the lunch hour Cohort Sports.

The Cohort Sport lunch hour activity, is an optional and additional physical activity time that all students are welcome to

attend. During Cohort Sport, the student’s play a variety of games. Four square, badminton and floor hockey have been

the focus as of late. This Cohort Sport is an excellent source of fun and excitement for the students. I encourage all the students to try this great lunch hour activity as physical activity has been proven to increase concertation and

focus during academic studies.

Community Support Worker Corner

Hello Parents/Guardians, Caregivers and Families.

It is my hope and wish that you are well and keeping safe. At Mulvey school we would like work together with you and the kids on various activities and programs to maintain the wellness and be in control of balancing a positive attitude while waiting for new normal to way out. As your Community Support Worker, I would like us to continue working together virtually while maintaining the safety of each other and having fun at the same time. Please look at the following proposed programs and activities and let me know which one you would like to be involved in.

Book Club - I Love to read activity for the parents As many of the parents are at home, we could change the pace from watching TV to reading a book. I would like to start a Book club group for parents whom I will be reading with and sharing books with. You will read at your own pace and in the comfort of your own home and at your time. From the school, we will purchase the book, so you my have your own copy. You could read the book alone or with your family. Then we meet virtually and talk about that book together as a group. February is I love to read month, so it will be good to start our club at this time. If you have a suggestion for a book you recommend, please send me an email and we can consider the title. I do have great books picked out, but always looking for suggestions for potential future books we can read together. I am also interested to know who is interested and keen to be part of the book club. February is also Black History Month and an opportunity to further look at significant contributions made and honour the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present.

PAINTING: We are looking to have a painting class, be wonderful to try this once a month. Are you interested, call me at the school 204-786-3469 or send me an email, [email protected]

COOKING: Since we are not sure when we will getting together in person, I feel it is important to make ourselves busy while having fun, so let us meet each other virtually. Therefore, I am also planning cooking classes. Cooking classes will begin in February 2021.

SEWING: Let us also do some sewing. In sewing we will start slowly, for example we be making Rug blankets, make kitchen hand towels and may be learn to sew buttons and hems. If you are interested in sewing – all levels of sewers are invited, please call the school at 204-786-3469 or send me an email, [email protected] I will send more information once I hear from you. I need to know whether there is interest in these programs and activities I am proposing. Let us use these times to be creative and to be positive about what we can do in the absence of in person meeting.

Koats for kids Information

The weather is getting colder. If your child needs a warmer coat and all the warm accessories, please let us know and as usual, we can assist. Please be advised that Koats for kids was closed on January 27th, but required the school can still be of assistance, please let me know.

I would want you know that if you have some issues that I can help with, don’t feel alone, I could be of help, talk to me. Please contact me at my email: [email protected]. or call me at the school number.

STAY SAFE AND STAY WARM.

The Winnipeg School Division - Transportation and Busses

Bus and school cancellation information

Bus cancellation During the school year there may be times when school bus transportation is cancelled due to inclement weather or poor driving conditions, but schools will remain open.

School bus transportation for all school divisions in the City of Winnipeg is cancelled when the temperature reaches –35° C or with windchill reaches -45° C by 6:15 a.m. based on the Environment Canada readings at The Forks, Winnipeg (click here for latest readings at The Forks). When bus transportation is cancelled in the morning, it will not resume later in the day even if weather conditions improve.

All major Winnipeg media outlets are contacted in the early morning and are asked that they broadcast and/or post bus cancellation information.

Severe Weather Conditions

Contact information A) All Regular / Special Education Programs Requests for transportation service, reporting changes of address or anticipated long term absences (over three days) - please telephone student’s school. B) Transportation Information Scheduling, operations and enquiries – refer to the Winnipeg School Division Transportation Department at 204-789-0452 (8:00 a.m.– 4:30 p.m.). Transportation Supervisor - Curtis Basso @ 204-789-0452

Please visit the Winnipeg School Division Website at the following link https://www.winnipegsd.ca/About%20WSD/deptservices/buses-and-transportation/Pages/Default.aspx or come to the school’s office and request that we print out a printed hard copy for you.

Severe weather conditions and poor roads may extend the running time of some buses, resulting in late arrival and departure. Parents/guardians should make sure that children are suitably clothed until picked up and that they have a place to go in the event the bus does not arrive. Parents/guardians must also ensure that children have a place to go after the return trip.

the school, the devices will be stored in the school’s office in a locked area for the school day and can be picked up upon 3:30 PM dismissal.

We at Habitat for Humanity invite students in Grade 4-6 to participate in the Meaning of Home Writing Contest

(MOH) . The contest runs from January 4 to February 19, 2021. We hope you will be able to support Habitat

for Humanity Manitoba through your participation (our generous sponsors donate $10 to the local Habitat for

Humanity for each student entry into MOH). COVID-19 has restricted much of our fundraising and thanks to

our generous sponsor, the MOH contest really helps bring in much needed funds every year to support families in need of safe, decent housing.

Please go to the MOH website https://meaningofhome.ca or https://meaningofhome.ca/fr (French) for details on how to submit your students’ stories or poems. There are some great prizes to be won by the students. Please call me at (204) 799-6883 if you have any questions or email me. Thank you so much for your partnership.

All the best to you during this challenging time. Vernelle Mirosh Habitat for Humanity Manitoba Director, Fund Development 60 Archibald Street, Winnipeg, MB (204) 235-2407 (office)

Make plans to celebrate Manitoba’s Louis Riel Day, Family Day February 15th, with your family and friends.

Louis Riel was a passionnante Métis leader. He was a catalyst in the events that occurred making Manitoba become Canada’s fifth province and joining confederation in 1870. Louis Riel had a dream of a civilized world that embraces all cultures. This dream is celebrated by all Manitobans on Louis Riel Day,

Why Remember Louis Riel?

Louis Riel is recognized as an advocate of justice for the Métis people, but he represents much more. He helped lay the framework for minority rights and cultural co-operation, and is regarded as one of the founders of Manitoba. It is very important to remember Louis Riel’s contribution to Canada.

Commemorating Louis Riel

A resolution was passed by parliament citing that Louis Riel was one of the Founders of Manitoba on 10 March 1992.

In numerous communities in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario, Riel is commemorated in the names of streets, schools, and other buildings (such as the Louis Riel School Division in Winnipeg). The student centre and student area at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon are named after Riel. Highway 11, stretching from Regina to just south of Prince Albert, has been named Louis Riel Trail by the province; the roadway passes near Batoche. One of the student resi-dences at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia is named Louis Riel House. Riel House National Historic Site in Winnipeg explores the life of Louis Riel and his significant contribution to protect social, cultural and political rights. On September 26, 2007, the Manitoba legislature passed a bill establishing a statutory holiday on the third Monday in February as Louis Riel Day, the same day some other provinces celebrate Family Day, beginning in 2008. The first Louis Riel Day was celebrated on February 18, 2008. This new statutory holiday coincides with the annual celebration of the Festival Du Voyageur in Winnipeg.

Black History Month

February (Black History Month) is the month in which we take the opportunity celebrate the progress, richness and diversity of the achievements and contributions of Blacks in Canada and around the world. It provides a focal point for the celebration of Black experiences, perspectives and history throughout the curriculum. It was initiated in Canada by the Ontario Black History Society and introduced to Parliament in December 1995 by Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected as a member of Parliament. Black History Month was officially observed across Canada for the first time in February 1996.

I Love to Read Month Once again it is time

to celebrate reading.

Every February all

across Canada, students celebrate

the art of reading. We can read anything, anywhere, with anyone! We are so lucky! Here at Mulvey, we will celebrate reading

by:

• playing word board games,

• making a list of everywhere we read

and everything we read in one day

• inviting other teachers to read to us

• welcoming community members to read

to us

• stopping whatever we are doing and reading…even if we’re eating lunch or running in the gym

• wearing a t-shirt or badge with words

on it

• designing a poster with 10 interesting

facts about our class

• reading books about diversity
