Dear Parents, Carers,

As you know, we are to become an academy on 1st September 2013. We are working very hard with Hamp-shire County Council and our solicitors to ensure that the transfer is running smoothly. We have been told that we are on target to achieve the starting date so far.

When was the academy order received?

The Academy order received on 22nd May 2013 and was signed by Michael Gove.

Why was the name ‘Fareham Academy’ chosen?

The governors and staff were very keen for the Academy to be at the heart of the community.

Does the school receive any support to convert to an Academy?

Yes the school receives a support grant worth 25K and serves the following purposes:

Obtaining legal advice in respect of the conversion process

The costs of software license transfers

HR/TUPE advice

Re-branding costs

Expenses incurred in setting up the Academy Trust

How will you use your autonomy?

Academies benefit from greater freedoms to innovate and raise standards. We are particularly interested in the free-doms around the delivery of the curriculum and in our autonomy from the local authority control to set up our 6th form in September 2014.

What relationship will you keep with Hampshire County Council?

We have always had a very strong working relationship with HCC and will continue to do so. In the first year, we are in-tending to keep our service level agreements with HCC.

How will it affect the work that you do with the junior schools?

We have an opportunity to review how we work with our feeder schools and to improve on what we do with them. With that in mind, we will:

Have a cluster meeting each half term between Headteachers and staff. The first meeting is to take place on 19th Sept 2013 then there will be 2 in spring and 2 in the summer.

The focus of the first meeting will be about transition and planning collaboratively for ICT and innovation. We are very keen to co-plan what is being delivered to Years 4, 5, 6 when pupils come and spend time at the Academy. Equally we will encourage staff from the feeder schools to come and observe lessons at the Academy. We will ob-serve lessons in our feeder schools too.

Following pupils’ visits from our feeder schools to the Academy, we will publish a cluster newsletter and set up a blog linked to the feeder schools’ website. This will enable all parents to see what their child has done.

We are very keen for our student leadership team to be involved in the planning of future events and in representing the schools during our Transition week and days.

We will continue to offer outstanding G&T events for years 4 and 5. They have been well attended and a huge suc-cess.

We will be working closely with Wallisdean Infant School. Years 1 and 2 pupils will be coming to Fareham Academy to use our ICT facilities as from September 2013.

Are you intending to build new buildings?

For the moment, the school is not at full capacity. However we may be looking at adding a brand new building in the future for the 6th form. We are keen to continue to look after our buildings. We will have brand new Design Technology rooms in September 2013. Over 300K has been spent on refurbishing them. We have also decided to resurface and improve the quality of our 6 tennis courts during the autumn term.

What will the new branding look like?

We have consulted the staff and students on the new logo. Signs around the school will be changed. Students will be wearing a blazer.

Will you have a new website?

Yes. The new website will be launched on 1st September 2013. We have received a lot of feedback regarding our current website and will incorporate the changes in the new one.

Governor News

This week our Governing Body hosted a visit from the Chairman of Cams Hill school. After a tour of the school he attended our Community and Environment committee meeting. This was a reciprocal visit as one of our governors attended one of their meetings recently, it was very interesting to compare our different practices and methods.

Year 7 Athletics

Robbie Symes and Spencer Watt have both qualified to represent Fareham and Gosport at the County

Athletics meeting on Tuesday 9th July at Southampton Sports Centre. Robbie qualified for the high jump and

Spencer for the shot put. A fantastic achievement, well done boys.

Chandler Harris competed in the Southern Area championships at Basingstoke on Saturday after his recent

victory at the County meeting last week. Chandler finished 4th with a best throw of 36.70. Again this is a

fantastic achievement, well done Chandler.

Year 7 Leadership Academy News

Chris Collins, Head of P.E. took 13 Leadership Academy students over to Wallisdean Infant school on Friday

14th June so they could help run their sports day. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to

demonstrate their leadership skills and they did not disappoint. The events were very well organised with

over 100 pupils and parents from the infant school taking part. Well done to everyone who took part.

The next Leadership Academy event is on Wednesday 26th June at Neville Lovett School where we will be

hosting the Year 1 and 2 infant agility. All Leadership Academy students will be involved in this. Letters will

need to be returned to Mr Collins by Monday 24th June.

Year 9 Parents Evening

A huge thank you to both Year 9 girls Katie Hardy and Sophie Stewart for their hard work at the Year 9

parents evening on Wednesday 19th June 2013. Both girls worked very professionally and were a massive

credit to the school. The event was very successful with a turnout of 75%.

Year 9 Science

On Tuesday 18th June, ten Year 9 students went to TeenTech in Basingstoke which is an event focussing on

the applications of science and technology in various exciting workplaces. For example, Sony, JVC, De La Rue

(who make and design bank notes worldwide).

There were over 30 international and award winning companies there for students to complete activities with

and find out more about. One of the events during the day involved students (and staff) competing to design a

mobile phone app, and another was to come up with new inventions for the year 2050. In the second

competition, Megan Wolfe came 5th place out of approximately 300 students for her idea involving a

wardrobe which would select outfits for you based on mood and events. The students were a credit to Neville

Lovett and we all thoroughly enjoyed the day!

Carl Buckley Award- Outstanding Contribution to School Sport

Connor Beech and Evie Wrixon were joint winners of the Carl Buckley award this year for their outstanding contribution to school sport whilst at Neville Lovett School. Both students have represented the school in many activities but have also shown exceptional leadership qualities during their time at the school. We wish them every success for the future.
