Many of our students are set to begin playing netball, rugby, or soccer this weekend. Play hard everyone, but play fair. Remember even if you are in a mixed team with other schools you are still representing Omakere School – do so with pride! To our parents, you should have received your child’s sports draws for the term, or know where you can access them. Please let us know if you are unsure about anything tomorrow because most children begin playing sport this Saturday. I do know that CHB soccer games do not start until Saturday 18 th May so most of the soccer players have a ‘rest day’ this Saturday. However there is a soccer training session on this weekend (Saturday 11 th ) before the Lew Isaacs tournament kicks off for the 5/6 year old players only. CHB soccer have requested that as many families as possible attend this training session which will be held at the SCOUT HALL starting at 8.45am. This training is only for the 5/6 year old players where they will be taught the WOF (Whole of Football Programme). By attending it will make the following Saturday, 18th May run more smoothly. If you require further information you can go into the following website which also has the soccer draws (should you lose the one we have sent home with your child!) www.sportsground/chbjuniorfootball This term we have a new staff member to introduce you all to - Amber Daley. Amber will be co-teaching with me for the remainder of the year in the senior room. Amber is married to Andrew Daley who is a secondary school teacher at CHB College who specialises in maths. Amber and Andrew have two children, Olivia 4yrs and Liam 18 months. Amber and her family live in Waipawa. Amber will teach on Monday and Tuesday in the senior room and I will teach Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Amber has many talents with strengths in literacy, numeracy and the arts. She has taught in NZ and in America where she did her teacher training. Amber can speak Japanese and hopes to teach some Japanese to our senior room students throughout the year. We are thrilled to have you with us Amber and we really hope you enjoy the remainder of this year with us. Now that it is starting to get colder we would love to have some ‘big sales’ of pinecones. We have already sold all of our $8 bags of cones (over $500 worth so far towards Senior Room camp) but have at least 250-300 sacks of the $5 ones to sell. Please let us know if you have any friends or family that would like to buy some off us. This term our students will be learning about “The Living World” as part of the inquiry process. Inquiry means we allow the students to ‘lead their learning’. We give them an overall topic such as learning about endangered species in NZ and they decide exactly what they would like to discover by asking questions and then searching for the answers. Students learn important skills in the inquiry process such as learning how to research for the required information, reading and comprehending the topic, summarising the facts, compiling the information into interesting and educational formats, and then publishing and presenting their findings in a layout or style

Dear School Families and Community Members Welcome back to school for Term Two which is always a busy term where parents ‘give up’ their Saturdays to watch their children play Winter Sport. Many of our students are set to begin playing netball, rugby, or soccer this weekend. Play hard everyone, but play fair. This term we have a new staff member to introduce you all to - Amber Daley. Amber will be co-teaching with me for the remainder of the year in the senior room. Amber is married to Andrew Daley who is a secondary school teacher at CHB College who specialises in maths. Amber and Andrew have two children, Olivia 4yrs and Liam 18 months. Amber and

her family live in Waipawa.

We give them an overall topic such as learning about endangered species in NZ and they decide exactly what they would like to discover by asking questions and then searching for the answers. that will inform and interest others about what they have learnt. The key aspects we may cover as part of the ‘living world studies’ include extinct and endangered animals with an emphasis on NZ animals, mammals and other categories of animals, (Eg reptiles, amphibians, birds etc) fossils, trees, plants and forestry and hopefully we will be able to fit in some experimental science for our seniors. We look forward to learning a lot about these topics as well as advancing the children’s writing, reading and maths as is always our key focus.

A major occurrence for this term is our annual ‘big event fundraiser’. We will continue to work hard towards making this event a huge success….the children and I have completed the ‘introductory movie’ for this event, so we will spend some of this term working on the ‘pre-auction video’. The event takes place on Thursday 13th June at the Waipawa Rugby Clubrooms starting at 6.00pm. Sir Colin Meads and Mr Ian Kirkpatrick are the speakers this year. Annabel Tapley Smith and the Event Organising Committee have been working hard with preparation leading up to this event already; now begins preparation work with an increasing momentum. Thank you to those parents that ensured their children completed the ‘goodie bag messages’ over the holidays and have returned them to school. Please can we have the rest of these back at school as soon as possible.

On the last day of term one Ella Kittow, Jack Smith, James Pick and William Musson all went to Peka Peka Wetlands Reserve with Carol Burkin to collect seedlings. They had a great morning checking out the reserve and helping to keep the reserve looking great. All four of our students worked hard with Carol and Megan McBain and had an eventful morning learning about environmental protection methodology. The students all returned with some native seedlings which they were allowed to keep and plant at home. Great stuff!

On Anzac day a number of our staff and their families, and some school parents with their children attended the Omakere Community Service. Blair and William Musson, Erika, Dylan and Bryce Wind represented Omakere School with pride on the day by taking part in the service. These five students participated in various roles during the service including doing bible readings, raising and lowering the flag, lighting candles and laying wreaths. (Thank you to Ann Johnson for creating our wreath – it looked wonderful!) All of these five students performed their parts respectfully. Well done to all of you and thank you for making yourselves available for this important community remembrance service.

Now that the Winter term is upon us our children are no longer required to wear sunhats in the playground. Gayle has taken all of the hats home to be washed and stored away until term 4. Thanks Gayle! Marie Wind has also started up “hot lunch days’ again which this year will be on a Thursday. Children can order pies, sausage rolls OR lasagne squares. There will be more information to follow regarding school lunches in next week’s newsletter. A big thanks to Marie Wind for organising school hot lunches again to provide children and parents with an alternative to sandwiches. This Sunday is Mother’s Day but it is also Dylan Wind’s birthday….Happy birthday Dylan! Dylan will turn 9yrs old. Have a great day and enjoy your time with friends and family. We wish all our mothers and Grandmothers a happy mother’s day also and hope you enjoy a little pampering from the men and kids in your lives.

This term our senior room are selling chocolates as our final camp fundraiser. All proceeds go to school camp. Each senior room child is expected to sell three boxes of chocolates (72 bars @$2.50 a bar) We have ordered 42 boxes of chocolates to be sold so children have the opportunity to sell more than 3 boxes if they desire. Please support our senior room children with this final fundraiser and buy lots of chocolate. Dads – the perfect opportunity to buy some chocolate for Mum for Mother’s day which we all know you will gift her with and then eat anyway! Buy up! There are lots of flavours to choose from – caramello, dairy milk, crunchy, and top deck. YUM!!!
