Meeting 24th August

Our speaker last We

dnesday was Prof. Ray

Wills, CEO of Susta

inable Energy

Association of

Australia. Ray

provided a huge

amount of information

on Stainable Energy

along with a vast

Renewable energy

suitable to Australia is

Solar, Geothermal,

Wind, Wav e, Tidal and

Ocean Current.

Facts on Global

billion pa on energy

projects of any type –

conventional and

renewable.

2008 – world

invested more in total

on renewable energy

($155 billion) than on

traditional energy

($140 billion).

Almost 50% of

new generation built

around the globe in

2009 was renewable

energy – 80 GW of

renewable power

capacity built

compared to 83GW of

fossil fuel plants

2010 up 32%

the largest investor in

renewable spending

$48.9 billion

In Australia

Meeting 31st August

Our speaker next week

will be our own

member Town Planner

Max Hipkins who will

inform us on the Perth

Waterfront

Development

Proposals.

GSE between Fiji &

Wiluna

After months of

requesting hosts and

drivers for the Group

Study Exchange Team

from Fiji, travelling to

Wiluna, it has now

been decided that this

Exchange will be

postponed until April

2012 so that the Team

can attend the District

Conference in

Geraldton.

Suggested Project for

Community Service

Meryl Gould, who

scans regional

Newspapers in her

position working in

MP Norman Moore’s

office, kindly drew our

attention to an article in

the Pilbara News. It is

a project being carried

out by the RC of

Karratha who are

supporting a re-entry

project for people

leaving Roebourne

Prison. It is a small but

important project

assisting women re-join

the community by

providing them with

Exit Packs. These

packs include a

backpack and a

number of female

hygiene products such

as a toothbrush,

shampoo and hand

sanitiser.

Meryl suggested it

might be a project that

the RCFB is interested

in emulating, Many

thanks Meryl, perhaps

Dir. Wilma McBain

could consider

including it on her

Agenda for her

Community /

Vocational Committee

meeting.

Maiti Nepal

Recently a Mrs. India

Australia dinner was

held in Sydney and the

Maiti Nepal

Foundation has

benefited by in excess

of $3,000 which will be

channelled through

RAWCS (Rotary Aust.

World Community

Service) before being

forwarded to the

Foundation in Nepal.

4 Way Test Speaking

Competition

MLC have informed

the Club that they have

three students who

would like to enter the

4 Way Test Speaking

Competition. Heats are

to be held by Clubs in

the week 19-23rd

September. Wednesda

y, 21st has been set

aside by the RCFB for

this heat to be

held. Two members of

the Club experienced in

Public Speaking plus

someone registered

with Rostrum are to

adjudicate and a $50.00

book voucher is to be

presented to the

winner on the night.

The competition is for

students to speak for

six minutes on any

topic but must weave

in Rotary’s Four Way

Test of the things

Rotarians think, say or

do which is:

1. Is it the

TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to

all concerned?

3. Will it build

GOODWILL and

better FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Is it

BENEFICIAL to all

concerned?

All information has

gone to over 320

Schools, however, in an

effort to ensure that the

information is passed

onto students,

members are being

sought to volunteer to

phone a list of

schools. Sec Di has the

list of schools from Dir.

Jenny and she is happy

to provide a list to

members who are able

to assist. After all the

work put into this

fundraiser by Jenny

and her family, it

would be a pity to have

it not succeed due to

the schools not passing

on the information.

With the Microscopes

in Schools Project

getting Rotary’s name

into Primary Schools,

perhaps when

contacting the schools

this project could be

mentioned and it used

to encourage

participation in the

Young Cook

Competition.

Jenny has a press

release ready to send to

the Post for publication

on the project so that it

is promoted locally.

The way the program

works is that a team of

about four couples

travel to another

Rotary District for

about two weeks

staying with

Rotarians. The teams

usually have 4 different

hosts. They are hosted

by the local club, attend

meetings and visit the

tourist sights in the

area.

Microscopes in

Schools Project

The microscopes are

now in Peth and

should be available for

collection and

distribution early in the

week.

There are orders for

1,400 which will be

despatched as urgently

as possible as many

schools have been

patiently waiting for

up to five months.

Sponsors for a further

300 plus units (14

schools) are being

sought. Some clubs

respond rapidly to

requests for

sponsorship and others

take months of

negotiation and a never

ending stream of

communication.

Chief Scientist Lyn

Beazley has been

talking with and is

arranging a meeting to

blend an initiative of

Prof. Jo Ward, Dean of

Science at Curtin Uni of

Telescope Kits with our

Microscope project. A

meeting is being set up

with Lyn, Jo, John

Clarke (STAWA), Di

and Carina Marshall to

talk about how best to

work the two together.

Lyn Beazley is also

communicating with

David Venning who

has kindly offered to

prepare packs of native

seeds as teaching aids

for the students to

study using their

Microscopes in Schools

program.

Slides of ‘skin’

organised by Rob

Pearce were presented

to North Cottesloe

Primary School on

Friday, 26th at their

School Assembly and

they were eagerly

accepted. A show of

hands by students of

who had used the

microscopes was

almost the entire

Assembly.
