Meeting 28th

September

At our meeting on 28th

September Garry

Baverstock AM, an Eco

Architect, spoke on

‘Climatic, Economic

and Sustainability

Challenges for this

Century’ and the

importance of the built

environment. In an

illustrated talk, Garry

clearly demonstrating

that climate change

was real and that we

are facing severe

resource constraints in

the future. He showed

how significant

advantages could be

gained in heating and

cooling of buildings

with sensitive

orientation and

selection of appropriate

materials, at the same

time conserving

energy. He

emphasised providing

inducements to

encourage adaptive

behaviour and achieve

desired improvements.

Due to extremely poor

attendance with many

members away plus a

change in location in

the Hospital for the

meeting, Garry has

offered to come back at

a later date to present

the address again.

Meeting 5th October

The Club’s regular

President Shiva

Senathirajah and

Rotaract Club of

Subiaco are to be

congratulated on the

way they filled the

venue, gathering

together Rotarians,

Rotaractors, Politicians

and people from the

Corporate sector to

hear about Rotary’s

major global project,

commencing back in

1979 and on the brink

of being brought to a

successful conclusion.

Videos were shown

from RI President

Kalyan Banerjee and

Assistant Director

General of WHO Bruce

Aylward, a brief

overview was

presented by PolioPlus

Zone Coordinator

PRID Ken Collins and a

personal story was

presented by PP David

Goldstone on his life as

a Polio victim.

The morning was a

resounding success as a

PR exercise on Rotary’s

role in the eradication

of Polio and hopefully,

some of the much

needed funds to

complete the job will be

Microscopes for

Subiaco Primary

School

Back in June, Carolyn

Press Principal of

Subiaco PS and wife of

Wayne Press, Principal

of North Cottesloe PS

wrote to the RCFB re a

set of microscopes for

her school.

This request was

passed on to the RC

Subiaco, who

eventually passed it on

to the RC Matilda Bay,

who in turn passed it

on to the Rotaract Club

of Subiaco. Bottom line

is that the RCFB will

provide these units to

the Subiaco Primary

School at a School

Assembly on

Thursday, 27th October,

at the Church of Christ

on Bagot Road at

9.00am

8th Asia Pacific

Regional Rotaract

Conference

PRID Ken Collins was

asked by Rotary

International to

represent the Rotary

Foundation at this

Conference and to

present on PolioPlus.

It was attended by over

450 young Rotaractors

(aged 18-30) from

many countries in the

Asia Pacific region

including China,

Taiwan, Korea, Japan,

Macau, Hong Kong,

Thailand, Malaysia,

India, Indonesia,

Bangladesh, Mongolia,

Philippines, Australia

and New Zealand.

Having to contend

with two typhoons in

three days, the

organisers did an

outstanding job of

setting up venues

despite the limitations

of no power,

reorganising the

program to

accommodate these

challenges etc.

The ability, youth and

enthusiasm of these

young folk is infectious

and all Rotarians gain

significantly from

participating in

Rotaract and Interact

events.
