A message fromTHE study abroad team Aberdeen Business School

Why study abroad? A venture overseas is a great way to set off on your future career path. For several years now employers have emphasised the value they place on graduates who have direct experience of living or working abroad. As the business world shrinks, global communication and collaboration grows – being competent in a multicultural environment is imperative for graduates today.

Aberdeen Business School is extremely proud of the international education we off er our students on campus in Aberdeen but we encourage all undergraduate students to consider the additional benefi ts brought by a period of study overseas. With a growing portfolio of new partners across Europe, North America and beyond, you will benefi t from the opportunity to take part in well-established and quality controlled international exchanges. In many locations, you will have the chance to study another language – however this is not a requirement for Study Abroad as most partners teach in English.

Studying with a European partner institution or undertaking a European work placement may attract an E.U. Erasmus grant to help off set any additional costs.

In addition to the academic and vocational benefi ts, previous outgoing students have often spoken of the increased level of confi dence they have gained – to say nothing of the friends they have met from around the world and the adventures they have had exploring their new environment!

We truly believe taking part in an international exchange is a decision you will never regret. We are always happy to discuss your options and give practical support. We hope that this brochure will encourage you to enhance your future employability and CV whilst having the time of your life!

Bon voyage!

Page 4: New Horizons 2012

What is Study Abroad All undergraduate programmes at Aberdeen Business School include the opportunity for a period of study abroad with one of our carefully chosen international partners.

The study abroad period is an integrated part of your course – so all of the credits you achieve at our partner institutions count towards your RGU degree – and without any loss of time. Most students are eligible and entry into the programme depends on your academic record so far, as well as your motivation to make the most of your time abroad. There are two major types of programme – Erasmus and Non-Erasmus.

Erasmus is the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, and is part of the Life Long Learning Programme. With Erasmus you can receive an EU-funded grant to help you with the costs of living and studying abroad. You may be able to apply to go abroad for a minimum of 1 semester and a maximum of 2 semesters (depending on the course you are taking), and you can take part even if you don’t speak a foreign language! Regardless of whether you are an EU citizen, you can take part in Erasmus.

Non-Erasmus exchange takes place at our partner institutions outside of Europe. For this type of exchange there is no grant to support the costs, but many of our partners operate a fee-waiver scheme which means that you continue to pay your fees to RGU as usual (e.g. by SAAS or LEA funding or international fees), and you will just pay the costs of travel, accommodation and subsistence in the host country. A small number of our partners do charge fees, and this is noted in the brochure. All of the partners in the non-Erasmus programme teach in English.

These Study Abroad programmes off er you an additional educational and cultural experience which is part of your accredited qualifi cation with RGU. Study Abroad enhances your CV as many employers like to have graduates with some international experience, so students who undertake such programmes will widen the employment opportunities available to them after their course. There are also opportunities to undertake your work placement in Europe, supported by an Erasmus grant.

Why should I go abroad?Going abroad to study or work could be one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of your course. The experience, new friends, a diff erent country, climate, culture and language can make it an unforgettable experience!

Where can I go?Where you go depends on the course you are studying. Each participating course has its own partner institutions in diff erent countries. Most of the courses have more than one partner institution, so you can choose which institution or country is most suitable for you.*

This brochure illustrates our numerous partner institutions. Each one has its own section to give you a clear overview of the partner and each destination has an introduction to the place where the institution is based to help you make your decision.

*Please note – student places can be limited at some of the more popular destinations.

Currently the courses which include the opportunity for Study Abroad are:

BA (Hons) Management

BA (Hons) Management with Marketing

BA (Hons) Management with Human Resources

BA (Hons) International Business Management

BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management

BA (Hons) International Tourism Management

BA (Hons) Law and Management

LLB Law

BA (Hons) Media

BA (Hons) Journalism

BA (Hons) Public Relations

BA (Hons) Events Management

All English-taught courses are held in Enschede and Deventer, whose campuses are fully equipped with computer rooms, an extensive library, restaurants and wireless internet, making it possible to work and study on your own laptop, wherever you want.

The Deventer campus is situated within walking distance from the railway station and a few minutes from the old town, the town centre and the arts centre.

WHAT ABOUT A WORK PLACEMENT abroad?Going abroad for your placement is not the easiest decision to make: there are some expenses up front (visa fees, fl ights, insurance, academic costs etc.), it might seem daunting to leave home, family and friends, to go through the hurdles of fi nding your way around in a foreign country, arranging accommodation, getting used to a diff erent way of thinking, etc. However 91% of managers interviewed in the research conducted by a German psychologist reported that their international experience had signifi cant positive eff ects on their personality and 82% said it improved their professional development. So working abroad can be an extremely rewarding experience on both a personal and professional level. The business world is shrinking, and managers who are able to think globally are in high demand. That’s why an international experience is very likely to boost your graduate career prospects and even change the way you see the world and yourself.

Year long placements are paid – the majority of European placements are supported by Erasmus funding. Contact the Placement offi ce for more details.
