A great start with our first meeting for 2010, welcoming back our speaker, Clive Boddy who spent most of last year in Adelaide. We’ve all been keen to hear Clive talk on the subject in which he is doing his doctorate ‘Psychopaths in the workplace’ and we were not disappointed. The information and statistics given by Clive were frightening and as he told us of the traits of psychopaths, I have a feeling we were all able to identify more in this category than we’d anticipated. Extremely interesting Clive, thank you so much for a very enlightening address. Thank you too to members who brought along guests to hear Clive. It was great to have such a healthy number present to kick of the new year. It was also a wonderful start to 2010 to induct three outstanding new members in Jen Martins, Hamish Mackie and Bronwen Tyson. Welcome to Rotary Jen, Hamish and Bronwen! May your lives be enriched by many years of Service to the local and wider world community and may you also enjoy the fellowship Rotary membership brings. On her return from the Eastern States in two weeks, it will be our pleasure to induct Wilma McBain. Wilma comes from a long line of women in her family dedicated to service. We had two visiting Rotarians, Ralph Martins (West Perth) and Donna Bicknell (Kalamunda). Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

Ken joins me in wishing you and yours a wonderful 2010 and we look forward to a productive and fulfilling

second half of our Rotary year.

A great start with our first meeting for 2010, welcoming back our speaker, Clive Boddy who spent most of last year in Adelaide. We’ve all been keen to hear Clive talk on the subject in which he is doing his doctorate

‘Psychopaths in the workplace’ and we were not disappointed.

It was also a wonderful start to 2010 to induct three

outstanding new members in Jen Martins, Hamish Mackie and Bronwen Tyson.

I’m sure it was a very proud

moment for Ralph to be able to pin both his daughter Jen and her husband Hamish with their Rotary pins. Ralph, the Australian of the Year for 2010 for WA will be travelling to Canberra with his whole family for the announcement of the Australian of the Year on 25th January and we wish you every success and congratulate you once again on the outstanding contribution you are making to the world through your research into Alzheimer’s Disease.

Along with Ken and Marcos, I attended the National Youth Science Forum Dinner at Currie Hall on Friday

night, where 144 outstanding young people from all around Australia are spending two weeks exposed to all kinds of scientific areas. They have had excursions, lab exposure and many inspirational addresses from top scientists such as WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley. At the dinner we heard about the work being done by Prof. Tony Friend who has brought back from the brink of extinction the numbat and Gilbert’s Potoroos. On Sunday 17th local Rotarians have been

asked to host students to allow them to catch up on their laundry and sleep. Ken and I have Rachael and Zofia while Simone and Marcos are hosting Patrick and Ricky. The members of the RC of Heirisson have done a great job in bringing the NYSF to Perth this year as it has allowed more students to

participate. At the same time as the NYSF here, there is also one taking place in Canberra.

With this year’s RI President John Kenney’s theme ‘The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands’ uppermost in our minds, I encourage as many members as possible to attend our Committee meetings next Thursday and to make suggestions for

Australia/ Japan Youth Cultural Exchange! ! ! !Rotary International Districts 9450 &2570

Dear D9450 Rotary Club Presidents, Secretaries, and International Service Directors,

Each year, we hold a welcome party for the incoming (AJYCE) (Australia Japan Youth Cultural Exchange) Japanese team from District 2570 Saitama Japan. This year we wish to make this an even more special event to include the visiting Rotary Friendship Exchange members from the UK. (Rotary Club of Scarborough Cavaliers)

We would also like to include the D9450 Rotary Exchange Students, and have them perhaps sing a song. Our exchange student Charlotte tells me that they can all sing a particular song together in their own language and it harmonises very well.

The evening has a busy schedule with the prime focus on the visiting Japanese team; they do a PowerPoint presentation and personal introductions.

Special guest: The Consulate general for Japan Tarao Sato and his wife Keiko, who also presents a welcome speech to the visitors.

The visiting team from the UK will also have the opportunity to give a brief introduction.

I will discuss this with our DG, who may also wish to give a brief welcome to both teams.

In the not too distant future I will be preparing the format agenda for the evening and forwarding it to all clubs.

It is imperative that we have an early indication of support, preferably tentative or confirmed numbers from the Rotary Clubs in our District.

As you can appreciate the booking of a large venue can be costly if we do not have the numbers. The newly finished upstairs section of the Hillarys Yacht Club can facilitate over 150 people and is superb.

Yours in Rotary

January is Rotary Awareness Month Rotary International News 11 January 2010

Celebrate Rotary Awareness Month by training members on Rotary history, programs, or how to raise awareness of your club’s projects among your community.

Or, ask members to share a personal story or experience that they have had because of Rotary. Every Rotarian has a Rotary story that can be educational and inspiring.

The new year is a good opportunity to renew inspiration for the rest of the Rotary year.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 29: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about a matching grant that has helped turn waste into profit for Philippine coconut farmers.

With the aid of a Foundation matching grant, the

Livelihood Project gives local farmers the supplies and labor to turn wasted coconut husks into “coconets”, which have environmental and economic benefits for the community.

The project increased employment levels for women and out of school youth while reviving the local coconut industry. Coconut husks, which are a

huge source of agricultural waste, are now used to make coconets which help provide an environmentally friendly solution to land erosion and degradation.

Another husk byproduct, coconut dust is used as a soil enhancer and organic fertilizer. This is an example of how The Rotary Foundation is helping smal ler communit ies

throughout the world and is ensuring that economic growth reaches the poorer communities.

ShelterBox responds to Haiti immediately

14 January, 2010 A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) is currently being mobilised with two SRT members from the USA and one from the UK leading the response. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean island of Haiti at close to 2200 GMT on Tuesday, January 12. Initial reports state that hundreds of people are feared dead while thousands of people have been left homeless. ShelterBox UK General Manager Lasse Petersen said: ‘We’re doing everything we can to ensure immediate aid reaches the people of Haiti. The process of getting our team on the ground is well under way. ‘We were in Haiti eighteen months ago, delivering aid after a series of hurricanes left thousands homeless. We’ll now be working closely with our contacts on the ground in the country to make sure we get aid to the people who need it most during the current crisis. Our thoughts go out to the people who have been affected by this disaster.’ The earthquake, described as the worst to hit Haiti in centuries, was centered 10 miles to the south west of the islands capital, Port-au-Prince. The initial earthquake was followed by two aftershocks measuring 5.9 and 5.5 in magnitude. Many buildings have been devastated including the HQ of the UN mission and the Presidential Palace.

ShelterBox SRTs and Boxes in the air

15 January, 2010 Tens of thousands dead, even more left homeless and scenes of chaos; this is the picture coming out of the Caribbean island of Haiti. The catastrophe continues to unfold and international disaster relief charity ShelterBox are working round the clock to ensure emergency shelter reaches the island as quickly as possible. Reports from Haiti say thousands of people have been sleeping in the open air for the second night running, with some people even being forced to sleep among dead bodies. With such a pressing need for emergency shelter provision, ShelterBox is dispatching 700 ShelterBoxes with even more to be packed before the end of the week. ShelterBox is using all of the resources available to make sure immediate aid reaches Haiti. Boxes are being shipped direct from ShelterBox HQ, from prepositioned stock in Curacao and from El Salvador. A three-person ShelterBox Response Team comprised of highly-experienced members David Eby (US), Wayne Robinson (US) and Mark Pearson (UK) are doing all they can to make it to Haiti as quickly as possible. Alongside this, the dedicated team of volunteers at ShelterBox HQ in the UK are giving up their time to help pack the ShelterBoxes ready for transportation. ShelterBox Founder Tom Henderson said: ‘Our team around the world are doing all they can to ensure aid reaches the people of Haiti as soon as possible. With each day the need grows and we’re doing all we can to get help to the thousands of families affected by this tragedy. ‘The response from our volunteers and supporters has once again been sensational. We can’t do this without the public’s compassion and generosity.’
